Abstract:A silicon-on-insulator (SOI) narrow-passband filter based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) is theoretically simulated and experimentally demonstrated, indicating that the free spectral range (FSR) of the proposed filter can be significantly enlarged by increasing the number of the MZI stages. A filter using three-stage cascaded MZIs structure is successfully realized in the experiment and a 3-dB bandwidth of about 1.536 GHz and FSR about 13.5 GHz have been achieved. The performance of a downconverting analog photonic link (APL) employing the designed filter for microwave signal processing is also measured and a spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) as high as 104.1dB-Hz(2/3) is observed.

Abstract:A tunable four stage active RF band-pass filter (BPF) adopting Q-enhanced technique is presented in this paper. The center frequency can be programmed from 1.3 to 1.7 GHz with 50 MHz resolution. The proposed BPF can also support a tunable signal passband from 25 to 1000 MHz with 25 MHz tuning step, equivalent to a 1.5-67% tunable fractional bandwidth when centering at 1.5 GHz. The RF BPF achieves 148.4 dB normalized dynamic range (DR). The chip is fabricated in a standard 65 nm CMOS process with 80 mA current consumption. To the authors' best knowledge, this RF BPF has demonstrated the widest fractional bandwidth programmability.

Abstract:In this paper, multilayer stepped impedance resonators (SIR) are proposed to design a dual frequency band filter. The center frequency of the proposed filter is 76 GHz and 94 GHz respectively. The design methodology has been investigated, demonstrated and verified. The filter has its compact size and fabricated by using our in-house multilayer BCB based MEMs fabrication technology with the minimum insertion loss 1.98 dB and 1.87 dB, respectively. The fractional bandwidth of 3 dB is 8.5 %and 6.7%, and the return loss of the two passbands is below 15dB. Simulated and measured results show close agreements. This filter offers advantages of easy integration with other active devices. It is suitable for three-dimensional integration of millimeter-wave and sub-Terahertz transceiver systems.

Abstract:A picometer-level narrowband optical bandpass filter with adjustable bandwidths and high extinction ratios (ERs) is proposed and demonstrated based on silicon high quality (Q) rings in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure. For each high-Q ring, the resonance bandwidth could be effectively tuned owing to the add-drop bending coupled structure. The drop transmissions of the two rings are combined in the MZI structure to construct bandpass optical filter responses. By manipulating the phase difference between the two arms of the MZI, the ER and the shape factor of the filter could be significantly improved. More importantly, due to the simultaneously adjustable ring bandwidths and resonance offsets, the bandwidth tuning ranges of the narrowband optical filter would be dramatically increased. The experimental results show that the 3 dB-bandwidth of the optical filter could be tuned from 1.2 pm to 41.5 pm (150 MHz∼5.1875 GHz) with maintaining the ERs beyond 30 dB and the in-band ripples below 1 dB. Furthermore, owing to the advantage of the MZI structure, the optical filter could obtain high shape factors (SFs). To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to realize a silicon-based picometer-bandwidth bandpass optical filter with a bandwidth tuning range beyond 40 pm, ERs beyond 30 dB and high SFs. The proposed narrow passband optical filters with tunable bandwidths, high ERs, good SFs and low ripples have various important applications in on-chip high-precision optical signal processing.

Abstract:An ultra-compact silicon bandpass filter with wide bandwidth tunability is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The filter architecture is based on a multiple micro-ring resonator-cascaded structure. A wide bandwidth tunability (from 75 to 300 GHz) can be achieved by controlling the resonant frequency of the microring resonators when a good shape factor (0.24-0.44) is held. The filter has a wide free spectral range (about 1.2 THz). The center wavelength can be tuned over several nanometers linearly. The footprint is only 0.053 mm(2). (C) 2016 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:This article proposes a three-dimensional heterogenous-integrated (3DHI) switchable bandpass filter bank with two independent wideband filter channels that cover 26-40 GHz and 32.5-40 GHz, respectively. An accurate wafer-level process with a high hollowed ratio of the applied 8-inch high-resistivity-silicon (HR-Si) interposer wafers is presented to form both compact filter channels. Above the interdigital filter patterns fabricated on the bottom interposer wafer, deep cavities are etched in the cap interposer wafer to improve the quality factor of the filter bank. Besides the cavities, the cap interposer wafer is 35% hollow inside, which two bare dies of GaAs single-pole double-throw (SPDT) switches and two thin film resistors are attached to the bottom interposer after the wafer-to-wafer (W2W) bonding. To ensure good out-of-band performance, a 3D EM co-simulation of the switch layout at the chip level and filter patterns at the package level is applied. Measurement results show that the switchable filter bank achieves a high isolation of 50 dB and a competitive shape factor (BW30dB/BW3dB) of about 1.3. In addition, the size of the switchable filter bank is only 7.0 mm x 3.5 mm x 0.6 mm, and the weight is only 0.1 g.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scalable bandwidth-tunable bandpass filter on silicon. Its spectrum is combined by that of four channels and each channel is formed by two cascaded micro-ring resonators (MRRs). By tuning the center wavelength spacing of the eight MRRs and the phase shifts of four channels, a wide bandwidth tuning range from 37.5 GHz to 227.5 GHz can be achieved with a shape factor between 0.2 and 0.73 and an in-band ripple less than 1 dB. By comparing with the performance of three-channel and two-channel structures, we can draw the conclusion that inducing more channels can effectively improve the bandwidth tunability. The filter also has a wide free spectral range (about 1.2 THz) and small footprint (0.12 mm(2)).

Abstract:In this article, a tunable four-stage high-intermediate-frequency (IF) bandpass filter (BPF) chip using inductors with a $Q$ compensation digital resistor array (QCDRA) is presented. The high-IF BPF intends to filter out-of-band spurs and distortions for radio frequency analog-to-digital converter (RF-ADC) or RF digital-to-analog converter (RF-DAC), which leverages programmable $Q$ -enhanced inductors to achieve ultrawide programmable bandwidth. The fabricated filter center frequency can be programed from 1.3 to 1.7 GHz with a 50-MHz resolution, which also supports a tunable signal passband from 25 to 1000 MHz with 25-MHz frequency step, equivalent to a 1.5%–67% tunable fractional bandwidth when centering at 1.5 GHz. The BPF exhibits $<$ 50-ns signal bandwidth program settling time, suitable for agile radio applications. To ensure an accurate filtering, a three-point calibration scheme is proposed to auto-calibrate filter response due to temperature variations. The high-IF BPF chip is fabricated in a 65-nm bulk CMOS process with 80-mA current consumption, which achieves a 150.94-dB normalized dynamic range (DR). To the authors’ best knowledge, this high-IF BPF has demonstrated the widest fractional bandwidth programmability.

Abstract:This paper presents an effective technique to obtain miniaturized and high-selectivity substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) bandpass filters by loading complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs) at the SIW cavities. The existence of the CSRR enables a considerable reduction of the resonance frequency of a conventional SIW cavity thanks to the coupling effect between CSRR and SIW cavity. Besides, a sharp roll-off is generated in a higher stopband due to the characteristics of CSRRs. To demonstrate the operation principal, the second- and third-order SIW bandpass filters are fabricated using standard printed circuit board technology, showing advantages of compact size, good selectivity, easy fabrication, and integration with other circuits. The measured -parameters agree well with the simulated ones.

Abstract:A design method for compact substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) bandpass filters (BPF) with controllable finite transmission zeros (FTZs) is proposed in this work, which is realised by a dual-layer SIW structure with two single-mode SIW cavities in the upper substrate and one dual-mode SIW cavity in the lower substrate. A basic dual-layer SIW BPF in box-section coupling scheme is proposed and analysed. Two FTZs can be produced for the bypass couplings between the diagonal cross-coupling paths. To enhance the cross-coupling strength, a magnetic coupling window between the two single-mode SIW cavities is designed. To further improve the selectivity of passband, a frequency-dependent coupling is designed between the two single-mode SIW cavities to produce an additional FTZ. Characteristics of the proposed dual-layer SIW filters with controllable FTZs are analysed. For the demonstration, some design examples with the centre frequency of 7.5 GHz and bandwidth of 240 MHz are presented, and two design examples are fabricated to verify the performance of the proposed design method for compact dual-layer SIW filters with controllable FTZs.

Abstract:A narrow-hand silicon photonic add-drop filter is demonstrated by using phase-modulated grating-assisted contra-directional couplers (contra-DCs) on the silicon-on-insulator platform. The apodization coupling is achieved by modulating the phase of one grating in a contra-DC, while keeping the other grating uniform. As the local effective index of the gratings remains almost unchanged, the designed apodized contra-DC has a large designing flexibility and a high sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR). To obtain a narrow bandwidth, weak coupling is designed. Single-stage and dual-stage filtering are both studied. The experimental results show that single-stage filtering device has a 3-dB bandwidth of 0.9 nm and an SLSR of 18 dB. Dual-stage filtering device has a 3-dB bandwidth of 0.5 nm and an SLSR of 23 dB. Our devices are promising for on-chip applications that require narrow bandwidths such as wavelength-division-multiplexed channel filters.

Abstract:Two ultra-compact silicon bandpass filters are proposed and partly experimentally presented. Both of them have wide bandwidth tunability. Based on the first filter (filter-I), the second filter (filter-II) was designed and has large Free Spectrum Range (FSR). Two filters share the same architecture (matrix architecture), consisting two groups of micro-ring resonator-cascade structures (simply called as micro-ring resonator in this letter). Using this matrix architecture, a wide bandwidth tunability from 75 to 300 GHz can be achieved in filter-I. Based on matrix architecture, double micro-ring resonator (MRR) were adopted and Vernier effect was used in design. It is showed both in simulation and experiment that the FSR of filter-II exceeded 35 nm (around 40 nm in simulation), which is much larger than the FSR of single MRR. Filter-II’s tunability of center wavelength in simulation covers most wavelength from 1530 to 1570 nm. The comparison of bandwidth tunability between filter-I and II reveals that adding paths in matrix architecture may be more effective than adopting high-order micro-ring resonators.
Comparison of Silicon Lattice-Filter-Based O-Band 1×8 (de)multiplexers with Flat and Gaussian-Like Passbands

Abstract:Based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) lattice filters, we demonstrate and compare silicon O-band 8-channel (de-)multiplexers with flat and Gaussian-like passbands for the 400 GBASE-LR8 norm. The 1×8 (de-)multiplexer with flat passbands exhibit insertion loss less than 2.5 dB, channel crosstalk lower than −11 dB, and 3 dB bandwidths of ∼3.9 nm. In contrast, the maximum insertion loss, the worst channel crosstalk, and 3 dB bandwidths of the 1×8 (de-)multiplexer with Gaussian-like passbands are 1.1 dB, −13 dB, and ∼2.9 nm, respectively. The comparison result indicates that the latter is more advisable choice. A theoretical calculation based on measured coupling ratios of stand-along directional couplers (DC) indicates that the performance deteriorations of practical filtering curves are mainly caused by dispersions and fabrication errors of the DCs.

Abstract:A bandwidth-tunable optical passband filter based on graphene–silicon waveguide is proposed. The device is designed by utilizing a structure with four triple series-coupled microring resonators. By changing the Fermi level of graphene to lead to the variation of the modal effective index, the transmission spectra of triple series-coupled microring resonators can be coherently combined to provide the adjustable bandwidth as desired. A detailed analysis of the designed device is presented. Numerical simulations show that the effective bandwidth tuning range from 2.70 to 6.30 nm can be obtained when each microring resonator is independently controlled. With the maximum bandwidth tunability, the designed tunable filter has a minimum extinction ratio larger than 92.35 dB.

Abstract:Based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder lattice filter, an eight-channel silicon photonic (de-)multiplexer with flat passband is demonstrated in the O-band. The insertion loss of the device is -0.55~-2.48dB and the channel crosstalk is below -7dB. The FSR and channel spacing are about 36nm and 4.4nm respectively.

Abstract:In this Letter, we demonstrate a highly linear silicon modulator based on the dual-series Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) architecture. The two sub-MZMs are biased at quadrature points of opposite polarities. A proper power-splitting ratio of the driving RF signal on the two sub-MZMs enables the suppression of the third order intermodulation distortion (IMD3). The spurious-free dynamic ranges (SFDRs) for IMD3 are 109.5/100.5 dB.Hz(2/3 )at 1/10 GHz. In contrast, the reference single MZM on the same chip exhibits SFDRs of 95.2/86.8 dB.Hz(2/3) at 1/10 GHz at its optimal reverse bias voltage. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Abstract:To meet the requirement of radio frequency signal processing tasks among various frequency bands, here we have demonstrated a reconfigurable microwave photonic bandpass filter by flipping the optical notch spectrum of a cascaded microring resonator (MRR) filter pool chip through phase modulation. We experimentally characterize the cascaded MRR filter pool chip on the Si3N4 platform and evaluate the system performance of the established microwave photonic filter (MPF). In the demonstrated microwave photonic filter system, the center frequency can be tuned within 5.8--18.2 GHz and the bandwidth can be tuned within 2.1--3.5 GHz. In particular, the MPF system features a response with a shape factor of ∼2.2. With the advantages of reconfigurability and good shape factor, the demonstrated reconfigurable RF bandpass filter shows a potential application in future software-defined RF frontends.

Abstract:We report on the design and the demonstration of silicon photonic ultraflat bandpass filters with low insertion loss and high out-of-band rejection for an operation near the 1550 nm wavelength band. These filters are based on cascading low (2nd) order Ring-Assisted Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (RAMZI) filter stages. The cascade design enables high out-of-band rejection while keeping the unit cells of each stage low order to be more tolerant to fabrication imperfections. The characterization of filters shows an insertion loss of ∼1 dB, an in-band ripple of <0.1 dB, an out-of-band rejection of >50 dB for a filter 3-dB bandwidth of ∼1.1 nm, and tunable up to ∼6 nm. We also investigate the filter's spur-free dynamic range at high input optical powers, which is important for RF photonics applications, and quantify a dynamic range of >60 dB for a laser power as high as ∼11.6 mW sent to the filter. Such integrated filters are promising for applications in pump wavelength rejection in four-wave mixing photon pair generation, and in RF antenna remoting where multiple RF signals are carried on different coarse wavelengths to be separated.
