Abstract:This paper investigates the spectrum fragmentation issue, which undermines the bandwidth efficiency in elastic optical networks. After categorizing the two-dimensional fragmentation problem as the fragmentation and misalignment subproblems, this paper proposes joint routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) algorithms to alleviate the spectral fragmentation in the lightpath provisioning process. The time complexity of the two proposed algorithms are analyzed in detail, and both algorithms can run in O(kdnC log C) time, where k is the number of the shortest path in the routing algorithm, d is the maximum node degree in the network, n is the number of nodes in the network, and C is the link capacity expressed as the number of spectral slots. Simulation results indicate that the proposed fragmentation-aware (FA) RSA algorithm and the FA algorithm with congestion avoidance (CA) outperform the existing schemes in terms of blocking probability (BP) reduction. Compared with the benchmark K-shortest-path routing and first-fit assignment (KSP-FF) algorithm, the proposed FA and FA-CA algorithms can achieve a BP reduction of [100%, 4.43%] and [100%, 6.45%], respectively, according to the traffic load in a sample NSFNET topology.

Abstract:Considering the constantly changing network resources and randomly generated spectrum fragmentation problem, a dynamic routing, modulation, and spectrum assignment based on the fuzzy logic control (RMSA-FLC) algorithm is proposed in this paper. A fuzzy logic control (FLC) system based on the degree of fragmentation optimization and the degree of link selection is constructed. The path-control weight (PW) is achieved as the output of the FLC system, and the path and spectrum allocation scheme with the maximum PW is selected for the immediate reservation requests. The simulation results show that the proposed RMSA-FLC algorithm can effectively reduce the blocking probability and improve the spectrum resource utilization in a dynamic elastic optical network.

Abstract:Elastic optical networks (EONs) provide fine bandwidth allocation granularity and enable scalable network management. In this paper, we review the strategies to alleviat e spectrum fragmentation from both the preemptive and proactive perspectives. As for preemptive defragmentation, we inves tigate the characteristics of bandwidth fragmentation in EONs, and then discuss a fragmentation-aware routing and spectrum as signment (RSA) algorithm to relieve spectrum fragmentation when setting up connections. As for proactive defragmentation,we decompose the problem into three subproblem: 1)Connection Selection; 2) RSA Re-optimization; and 3) Traffic Migration . We also discuss the problem of timing selection for defragment ation in dynamic network environments, and investigate how to improve network performance with the minimum operation cost by using intelligent and adaptive timing selection.

Abstract:Empowered by multirate transmission and bandwidth-variable switching technology, elastic optical networks (EONs) enhance spectrum utilization efficiency and increase network capacity to satisfy the rapid growth of Internet traffic. Routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) is one of the key elements in realizing EONs. However, previous RSA schemes with superior performance have had the drawback of high computational complexity. In this work, we focus on achieving superior RSA performance with reduced computational complexity. We first propose a dynamic network resource evaluation method that takes into account both the distribution of traffic bandwidth and the spectrum blocks' carrying capability. Based on this, we introduce traffic-based fragmentation-aware concepts into the RSA steps. In the routing step, we propose a low-complexity fragmentation-aware load-balanced shortest path routing scheme and a modified fragmentation-aware load-balanced k-shortest-path routing scheme. In the spectrum allocation step, we propose an efficient traffic-based fragmentation-aware spectrum allocation scheme. Simulation results prove that the proposed RSA schemes can reduce the computational complexity significantly and provide network accommodation that is comparable to and traffic blocking probability that is similar to existing dynamic RSA schemes.

Abstract:We propose several novel dynamic routing, modulation and spectrum assignment (RMSA) algorithms for high-throughput service provisioning in spectrum-sliced elastic optical networks. The proposed algorithms can be applied to network provisioning, where a network operator needs to figure out an efficient way to serve each dynamic connection request based on current network status. The proposed algorithms can be categorized into two categories, dynamic RMSA using online path computation and dynamic RMSA using path-set updates. The former one updates link metrics based on their spectrum utilization status dynamically, and performs RMSA with online routing path computation for each request. The latter one pre-computes K shortest routing paths as the path-set for each source-destination pair in the network topology, performs RMSA based on different path-selection policies during dynamic provisioning, and updates a path-set by adding a new path in when a path in the set is not available for a request. We evaluate the proposed algorithms with simulations using the Poisson traffic model in a 14-node NSFNET topology. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithms outperform existing dynamic RMSA algorithm by providing lower bandwidth blocking probability, and reduce the blocking probability by one magnitude or more when the traffic load is light (≤ 700 Erlangs). The comparisons on network resource utilization also indicate that the proposed algorithms achieve larger resource utilization and hence provide higher throughput for network operations.

Abstract:In order to address the spectrum fragmentation problem in flexible grid optical networks,the spectrum fusion oriented routing and spectrum allocation algorithm and spectrum defragmentation algorithm are proposed.The notions of spectrum allocation window,spectrum allocation point and spectrum fusion window are introduced to optimize the network resource utilization.To retain the spectrum consecutiveness as much as possible when establishing a lightpath and reduce the spectrum fragments,the proposed RSA algorithm considers the spectrum utilization in candidate links and their adjacent links.The spectrum defragmentation algorithm is used to make enough room for the blocked request by rerouting already established lightpaths.Simulation results reveal that the algorithms significantly improve the blocking probability performance and resource utilization under dynamic traffic in flexible grid optical networks.

Abstract:Flexible bandwidth optical networking (FBON) based on optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (O-OFDM) technology has been proposed to accommodate traffic over 100Gb/s in the future due to its flexibility in spectrum allocation. In FBON, due to the limit of spectrum continuity constraints (SCC), routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) suffers a lot from spectrum fragments. Therefore, a lot of schemes have been proposed to deal with spectrum fragmentation, including spectrum conversion, spectrum sweeping retuning, multi-path routing, and fragmentation-aware RSA algorithm. These schemes are carefully designed to lower blocking probability. However, they usually need extra/high-quality infrastructures, require complex processing, or cause traffic interruption. To reduce spectrum fragmentation, we investigate spectrum allocation approach through utilizing the relationship between spectrum blocks' accommodation capability and traffic bandwidth distribution. Based on this, a fragmentation-aware spectrum allocation (FSA) algorithm is presented. Generally, this algorithm probabilistically optimizes the spectrum resource allocation process. The simulation results show that it is able to achieve a lower bandwidth blocking probability.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the problem of routing, modulation and spectrum assignment (RMSA) for advance reservation (AR) requests in elastic optical networks (EONs), with the objective to further reduce the blocking probability and improve the spectrum utilization. On the one hand, we propose a minimum resource consumption routing policy (MRC) for leaving more free resources for future requests. On the other hand, we introduce a two-dimensional (2D) path resource model, in which each AR request can be transformed into a rectangle block whose length and width are related to request bandwidth and request duration respectively. Therefore, the spectrum assignment problem of AR requests is simplified to the two-dimensional rectangle packing problem. Furthermore, we design several factors to evaluate the two-dimensional fragmentation caused by a rectangle packing operation, where we consider the fragmentation situation in the rectangle block neighborhood for the first time. Based on these factors, we propose a two-dimensional fragmentation-aware spectrum assignment strategy (2D-FA). Through the combination of MRC and 2D-FA, we propose a novel RMSA algorithm named MRC-2D-FA for dynamically provisioning AR requests in EONs. Simulation results show that MRC-2D-FA can achieve lower bandwidth blocking probability and higher spectrum utilization compared with several well-performed benchmark algorithms.

Abstract:The space division multiplexing elastic optical network (SDM-EONs) can effectively supply the large-capacity for the current optical network. If a link failure occurs, it will bring huge data losses or disruptions for the operator. We propose a survivable multipath fragmentation-sensitive fragmentation-aware routing, core and spectrum assignment (SM-FSFA-RSCA) scheme to solving the problem of survivability of the request in SDM-EONs and spectrum fragmentation that caused by the dynamic allocation and release of spectrum resources. We design a fragmentation-sensitive fragmentation metric (FSFM) to estimate the spectrum fragmentation in the established lightpaths, and design a dynamic routing and core selection strategy for the request to control spectrum fragmentation in the core according to FSFM. We consider survivable multipath routing strategy for saving spectrum resources, each path of the multipath can be used as a working path or a protection path. In addition, for spectrum allocation, a survivable multipath with shared spectrum allocation strategy is adopted to maximize the utilization of frequency resources. The simulation results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper significantly reduces the bandwidth blocking probability,fragmentation ratio and also improves the spectrum utilization.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the service provisioning schemes for dynamic advance reservation (AR) multicast requests in elastic optical networks (EONs). We first propose several algorithms that can handle the service scheduling and routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) of AR multicast requests jointly, including an integrated two-dimensional fragmentation-aware RSA (2D-FMA) that can alleviate the 2D fragmentation caused by light-tree provisioning. Then, we leverage the idea of software-defined EONs (SD-EONs) that utilizes OpenFlow (OF) in the control plane to demonstrate and evaluate the proposed algorithms. Specifically, we build an SD-EON control plane testbed, implement the algorithms in it, and perform control plane experiments on dynamic AR multicast provisioning. The results indicate that 2D-FMA achieves the best blocking performance and provides the shortest average setup delay.

Abstract:High spectrum efficiency and flexibility are the advantages of elastic optical network, which is the future direction of optical network development. Routing and resource allocation is one of the core technologies of flexible optical networks. This paper propose an improved RSA algorithm in the elastic optical network which based on OSNR impairment model. It considers both QoT (quality of transmission) and available spectrum resources of the network in routing selection and spectrum allocation. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that compared with the traditional RSA algorithm, the proposed algorithm can improve the transmission efficiency and quality, and reduce the traffic blocking rate.

Abstract:This paper proposes a dynamic routing, modulation level and spectrum allocation (RMLSA) scheme in the flexible optical wavelength-division multiplexing (FWDM) networks with modulation format conversion ability. The scheme considers the modulation format conversion at the intermediate nodes and addresses the fragmentation problem by avoiding appearance of them. The influence of routing to the emergence of the fragmentation is quantified, which is referenced to decide which one route of k-paths to use. Simulation results demonstrate efficient reductions in blocking rates and improvements in failure recovery rates for the scheme in the network.

Abstract:Elastic optical networks (EONs) enable network operators to have agile bandwidth management in the optical layer. In this paper, we investigate dynamic and adaptive bandwidth defragmentation (DF) in EONs with time-varying traffic using connection reconfigurations. We consider how to design DF procedure in a systematic way, and study the problems that have not been fully explored so far. Basically, we divide the procedure design into four subproblems: "How to reconfigure?," "How to migrate traffic?," "When to reconfigure?," and "What to reconfigure?," and solve them sequentially. For "How to reconfigure?," we investigate the combination of routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) algorithms for DF, i.e., the RSA algorithm that the connections are originally served with and the algorithm that they are re-optimized with. For "How to migrate traffic?," we propose to construct a dependency graph to represent the relations among the selected connections and to use it to assist the best-effort traffic migration. A move-to-vacancy method is also proposed to further reduce the traffic disruptions. For "When to reconfigure?" and "What to reconfigure?," we propose intelligent timing selection and adaptive DF ratio selection methods to tackle the tradeoff between the bandwidth blocking probability (BBP) performance and operational complexity. Simulation results show that the algorithm with both methods implemented (DF-AT-AR) achieves better tradeoff between BBP performance and operational complexity, when compared with existing algorithms.

Abstract:The elastic optical network (EON) is a promising new optical technology that uses spectrum resources much more efficiently than does traditional wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). This paper focuses on the routing, modulation level, spectrum and transceiver allocation (RMSTA) problems of the EON. In contrast to previous works that consider only the routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) or routing, modulation level and spectrum allocation (RMSA) problems, we additionally consider the transceiver allocation problem. Because transceivers can be used to regenerate signals (by connecting two transceivers back-to-back) along a transmission path, different regeneration sites on a transmission path result in different spectrum and transceiver usage. Thus, the RMSTA problem is both more complex and more challenging than are the RSA and RMSA problems. To address this problem, we first propose an integer linear programming (ILP) model whose objective is to optimize the balance between spectrum usage and transceiver usage by tuning a weighting coefficient to minimize the cost of network operations. Then, we propose a novel virtual network-based heuristic algorithm to solve the problem and present the results of experiments on representative network topologies. The results verify that, compared to previous works, the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce both resource consumption and time complexity.

Abstract:Traditional standard single-mode fibers (SSMF) are unable to satisfy the future long-distance and high-speed optical channel transmission requirement due to their relatively large signal losses. To address this issue, the ultra-low loss and large effective area (ULL) fibers are successfully manufactured and expected to deployed in the existing optical networks. For such ULL fiber deployment, network operators prefer adding ULL fibers to each link rather than replace existing SSMFs, resulting in a scenario where both of SSMF and ULL fiber coexist on the same link. In this paper, we investigated the routing, fiber, modulation format, and spectrum allocation (RFMSA) problem in the context of an elastic optical network (EON) where ULL fiber and SSMF coexisting on each link under both the static and dynamic traffic demands. We formulated this RFMSA problem as a node-arc based Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model and developed Spectrum Window Plane (SWP)-based heuristic algorithms based on different fiber selection strategies, including spectrum usage based (SU), optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) aware, ULL fiber first (UFF), and random strategies. Simulation results show that in the static traffic demand situation, the RFMSA algorithm based on the OSNR-aware (OA) strategy exhibits optimal performance, attaining a performance similar to that of the MILP model regarding the maximum number of frequency slots (FSs) used in the entire network. Moreover, in the dynamic traffic demand scenario, the SU strategy remarkably surpasses the other strategies in terms of the lightpath blocking probability.

Abstract:In elastic optical networks, the lightpaths setup and tear down processes may cause the so-called spectrum fragmentation issue, degrading spectrum utilization, increasing lightpath rejection ratio, and this is especially critical under dynamic traffic scenarios. In this letter, we first theoretically analyze the lightpath rejection ratio in elastic optical networks and reveal the relationship between link utilization and the rejection ratio. Then a novel link-based partial defragmentation method which could effectively reduce lightpath rejection ratio and reduce reconfiguration is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme may reduce up to 40% lightpath reconfigurations comparing to traditional defragmentation schemes.
