Abstract:In recent years, mobile data gathering in wireless sensor networks has attracted much interests in the research community. However, despite extensive efforts, many of previous work in this area lies only in theory and evaluates network performance with computer simulations, which leaves a large gap from reality. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a general purpose, flexible platform for mobile data gathering in wireless sensor networks to evaluate network performance and algorithms in a practical setting. Instead of relying on hand-crafted theoretical models, our platform integrates both mobile data collector and sensor nodes to provide realistic performance evaluations. In addition, the platform adopts a modular design in mobile data collector and sensor nodes, and equips the mobile data collector with advanced computing capability, which makes it versatile for evaluating the performance of a wide-range of applications. Finally, as a case study, weimplement a wildlife monitoring system on our platform. Our experimental results demonstrate that real implementations can evaluate many practical performance factors which would have a great impact on the sensing results and are very difficult to fully capture by theoretical models and simulations. We expect that this platform can become a very powerful general tool for more accurate network simulations and facilitate performance optimization in wireless sensor networks.

Abstract:Middleware for wireless sensor networks(WSNs) is system software between WSNs and applications,which shielding the underlying network hardware differences and the complexity of a distributed environment,providing a stable environment for application development.With the development of sensor network and its application,the overall complexity of such systems is continuously increasing.These will require high performance and high-quality middleware for sensor networks,which directly affecting the research and the development of sensor networks.Considering the ISO/IEC 9126standards and the characteristics of sensor networks,test standards and content of middleware for WSNs are proposed in this paper.In addition,we introduce the design and implementation a platform,which test and verify the quality and performance of middleware for WSNs.The overall architecture of this platform and the details of each module in the platform are described in this paper.According to different types of middleware for WSNs,users can design tests programs by the platform.

Abstract:A typical wireless sensor network (WSN) consists of a large number of sensor nodes, and is envisioned to support a wide range of applications. As most sensor nodes are operating unattended for a long lifetime, the need for robust software is very important for networked sensor systems. Simulation of networked sensor systems should be an important phase in application development. In this paper, we provide a detailed technical review of sensor network simulators. We not only list existing sensor simulators in the literature, but also summarize each simulator's advantages and disadvantages. Hence, simulator users can benefit from this summarization. We provide a taxonomy of various simulators based on the simulator architecture, the simulated CPU model, radio model, and sensor model. We point out some challenges of sensor network simulation, and summarize some recent techniques to address these challenges. Simulator developers can benefit from these descriptions. Finally, we further highlight some guidelines from both simulator users' perspective and simulator developers' perspective, and give case studies on how to select a simulator.

Abstract:An AMR(Automatic Meter Reading) system is used to automatically collect data from meters. In this paper we design and implement a Wireless Automatic Meter Reading System to solve the problem in existing AMR system. The system consists of wireless modules, measure meters and management center. A general wireless module, is developed to transfer the data gotten from traditional analogue meters or digital meters by using ZigBee communication network. We describe a system framework including the hardware of wireless module and software design of data acquisition. We also develop the operator interface on management center. Finally, we build up a Wireless Automatic voltage Meter Reading System as a case study. The proposed system has board application foreground in industry.

The challenges regarding programming, monitoring, managing WSNs are increasing dramatically, and challenges for the corresponding tools as well. This paper covers the whole scope of the WSN development life cycle and describes the major components for developing WSNs, then provides a survey of some of the software tools currently available to assist in the development of WSNs, and finally presents challenges for developing WSNs. These challenges for future development tools of WSNs provide some motivations and objectives.

Abstract:This paper presents the design and implementation of network controller which based on the Data Link Layer's specification of a lightweight sensor-oriented fieldbus protocol, that is sensor network protocol. The controller is packed with AVALON standard peripheral interface. It can be treated as a normal intellectual property core in project design, so that the operation on it is simplified as reading or writing on register. The test results show that the controller meets the requirements of the specification in the frame identification, arbitration, checking and so on. A follow-up application developing basement can be found easily on this controller.

Abstract:Deploying real WSN testbed provides a realistic testing environment, and allows users to get more accurate test results. However, deploying real testbed is highly constrained by the available budget when the test needs a large scale WSN environment. By leveraging the advantages of both simulators and real testbed, an approach that integrates simulation environment and testbed can effectively solve both scalability and accuracy issues. In this paper, we present NetTopo for providing both simulation and visualization functions to assist the investigation of algorithms in WSNs. One case study is described to prove the effectiveness of NetTopo.

Abstract:With the increasing of mobile users and traffic, user awareness oriented wireless network optimization has become one of the main tasks of mobile operators. The traditional testing methods, such as MOS test, DT (Driver Test) and CQT (Call Quality Test), all need a lot of manpower and material resource, and there was time delay between users' complains and test. In this paper, a mobile service automatic testing system based on wireless sensor network was proposed, which can carry out repeating tests, such as MOS test and CQT, with mature wireless sensor network. Field experiments showed that the solution met the original requirements.

Abstract:Wireless sensor network (WSN) is a new subject in network simulation field.After analyzing the advantages and shortcomings of current simulation tools for WSN,it is pointed out that they are not suitable for WSN simulation and raises the point that simulation platform should be designed according to the applications' requirement and designs a simplified simulation platform for WSN.Based on this platform,an experiment is designed to test reliable transport protocol.The experiment result indicates that the platform works well on new algorithm realization and evaluation.The conclusion is drawn at last that simulation platform developed for special application can meet needs of WSN simulation very well.

Abstract:Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is increasingly popular in the field of micro-environmental monitoring due to its promising capability. However, most systems using WSN for environmental monitoring reported in the literature are developed for specific applications without functions for exploiting user’s data processing methods. In this paper, a new system is designed in detail to perform micro-environmental monitoring taking the advantages of the WSN. The application-oriented hardware working style is designed, and the system platform for data acquisition, validation, processing and visualization is systematically presented. Several strategies are proposed to guarantee the system capability in terms of extracting useful information, visualizing events to their authentic time are also described. Moreover, a web-based surveillance subsystem is presented for remote control and monitoring. In addition, the system is extensible for engineers to carry their own data analysis algorithms. Experimental results are to show the path reliability and real-time characteristics, and to display the feasibility and applicability of the developed system into practical deployment.

Abstract:Protocol testing has been one of the most active fields in computer networks. In Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), before directly employing protocols on hardware testbed, we expect an effective test framework to verify the logical correctness of protocols on computers, which could facilitate the whole test process. Towards this goal, this paper introduces an upper test framework in WSNs, namely Protocol Testing Framework for WSNs (PTFW). PTFW is a visual client-server test framework which is built upon the unique features of WSNs. It is based on the layered architecture of WSNs and uses Finite State Machine (FSM) theory as the kernel. The proposed test framework is developed on Linux Operating System (OS) and coded in standard C language for the consideration of compatibility for real-world implementation. PTFW provides the standards/specifications of conformance testing for test on hardware testbed. To validate the performance and effectiveness of PTFW, we apply it to a real-world WSNs protocol. The results show that PTFW exhibits excellent visual and real-time features, which bring considerable convenience to the later employments on testbed.

Abstract:Through in-depth analysis of the typical international wireless sensor network experimental system, the current design generally lacks the real-time diagnosis of the health state of the fault node and the experimental platform, the management and control mechanism to minimize the interference of the experimental task, and the highly integrated and friendly experimental entrance, which will have an obvious distortion impact on the experimental results. In view of the above shortcomings, on the basis of fully absorbing the design advantages in this research field, this paper studies and designs a high fidelity WSN experimental system, which covers the elements of open source, heterogeneity, analysis visualization, and experimental repeatability and innovates the mechanisms of real-time diagnosis, hierarchical parallel control, and TDMA to collect a large amount of experimental data. In order to support a variety of applications based on IEEE802.15.4 band, a high-fidelity and user-friendly experimental platform software and hardware system with 15 clusters and 130 heterogeneous nodes is studied and designed, which can simulate outdoor mesh networks with more than 6 hops. This paper is designed and implemented on Linux open-source platform. The whole system has low cost and can be replicated. The design results have good reference and application value for the research and design of wireless sensor network experimental system.

Abstract:Wireless Sensor networks are gaining a role of importance in the research community. In this paper, we choose Imote2 to establish our testbed according to the analysis and the comparison of the hardware capabilities and software characteristics of the current WSNs products. Moreover, we present our hardware, software platforms and "30 motes" testbed to validate and evaluate our Fully Integrated Scheme of self-Configuration and self-Organization (FISCO) while further propose the rudiment of our general routing and data dissemination testbed. In the test stage, experimental results show that each mote in the network obtains the corresponding role and takes correct actions to handle every receiving message.

Abstract:WSNs are typically resource limited and hardware and applications diversely involved ,which makes it very difficult to develop and deploy WSN applications .This requires development of a middleware framework as an abstract layer in order to simplify application development and support fast deployment of application soft-ware to WSN nodes .This paper designed and realized a new middleware framework for WSN ,which adopted the executable linkable format (i .e .,ELF file format) based dynamic linking and loading technology and sup-ported dynamic loading and linking ,deployment ,activation ,suspension ,uninstallation and inter-invoking . Experiment results show that compared with other operations ,the desingned framework has smaller code sizes , enables deployment to WSN nodes with limited resources ,significantly reduces the amount of codes to be upda-ted and supports flexible applications and middleware services .

Abstract:In this paper, a new interface is developed in detail that provides terminal users with ways for direct and convenient interactions with the wireless sensor networks (WSNs). It also embraces an Internet based subsystem for remote monitoring and controlling of the WSNs. Different from existing platforms and interfaces, our design is general, extensible and not constrained for specific applications. More importantly, it paves the way for improving the data processing efficiency and avoiding data execution congestion. It proposes the idea utilizing the advantages of existing professional mathematical software tools, such as Matlab, Mathematica and Maple, to process the WSN data.

Abstract:It is necessary to develop simulation environment to evaluate the performance of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), especially for the large scale WSNs. Drawbacks of current simulators are pointed out, and a new simulation environment WSNSim is designed and developed based on. Net framework from aspects of architecture, application scenes, simulation flow. WSNSim adopts experimented energy model and component based approach, which can detect condition of environment, process sporadic event and track mobile target. The effectiveness of improved protocol SEMAC is validated under the WSNSim environment.

Abstract:In this paper,we introduce the design and implementation of SNAP(sensor network assistant platform)which is an integrated assistant platform for wireless sensor network(WSN) researchers.SNAP allows users to get the detailed internal information and communication messages from individual sensor nodes in a transparent manner.With SNAP,researchers are enabled to observe the very detailed network and system states such as the network topology,the communication messages,and the sensor states when new algorithms are applied.It supports both online monitoring and history record playback.It also supports customized data analysis for data classifications,remote reprogramming in an individual or batch mode,etc.SNAP uses a dedicated network to transmit control and monitoring information,and therefore introduces no interference to the working network.This feature allows it to work in a completely transparent manner.SNAP is a cost-effective solution specially designed for large-scale WSNs and can be universally applied to various WSN sensor generations.
