Abstract:By slightly changing the synthetic conditions, we have prepared two closely related linear tetranuclear CuII complexes with the symmetrical ONNO donor tetradentate Schiff-base ligand [H2L=(OH)C6H4(CH3)CN(CH2)3NC(CH3)C6H4(OH)] and with azide ions. These two distinctly coloured crystalline products were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV–Vis spectroscopy, CV, EPR spectra and variable temperature magnetic measurements. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the green [Cu4(μ-L)2(μ1,1-N3)2(N3)2] (1) and the red [Cu4(μ-L)2(μ1,1-N3)2(N3)2(H2O)2] (2) crystals show that the coordination environment of the two μ-phenoxo and μ1,1-azido bridged isomorphous tetranuclear CuII complexes are slightly different. Thus, both complexes are formed by very similar building units, although with a significant variation in the bridging Cu–O(phenoxo)–Cu and Cu–N(azido)–Cu bond angles. The consequences of these structural variations on the magnetic properties have been investigated from both the experimental and theoretical points of view by variable temperature magnetic measurements and DFT calculations.

Abstract:A new azido-bridged copper(II) complex, [Cu(dmp)(mu(1,1)-N-3)(mu(1,3)-N-3)](n) (1) (dmp = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole), has been structurally and magnetically characterized. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the compound consists of double end-on (EO) azido-bridged Cu-2(II) dimers which are linked by single end-to-end (EE) azide bridges to form a 2-D layer-like structure. Magnetic investigation demonstrates an overall ferromagnetic interaction in 1 and both azide bridges (EE and EO) transmit ferromagnetic coupling. At low temperature (T < 2.5 K), the compound exhibits some metamagnetic behavior.

Abstract:Three dinuclear cobalt(II) and copper( II) complexes with double end-on ( EO) azido bridges, [Co-2(DMP)(2)(N-3)(4)] ( 1), [Cu-2(DMP)(2)(N-3)(4)] ( 2) and [Cu-2(PAP)(2)(N-3)(4)] ( 3) ( DMP = 2-( 3,5- dimethylpyrazol- 1-ylmethyl) pyridine; PAP = 1-phenyl-2-(2-pyridyl)-1-azapropylene) have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic analyses. The EPR spectra of powder samples for the two copper( II) complexes have also been examined at room temperature and 77 K, respectively. In the isomorphous complexes 1 and 2, the metal ions are penta-coordinated with distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometries, and the EO azido bridges assume an equatorial - axial disposition between metal ions. In contrast, the copper( II) ion in complex 3 adopts a distorted square pyramidal geometry, and the EO azido bridges assume a basal - apical disposition between metal ions. According to magnetic studies, the double end-on azido bridges mediate ferromagnetic coupling with J = 18.1 cm(-1) in 1, antiferromagnetic coupling with J = - 27.6 cm(-1) in 2, and ferromagnetic coupling with J = 35.0 cm(-1) in 3.

Abstract:Two one-dimensional (1D) azido-bridged coordination polymers of formula [Cu(L-1)(mu-1,1-N-3)(N-3)](n) (1) and [Cu(L-2)(mu-1,1-N-3)(N-3)](n) (2) have been synthesized and structurally characterized, and their magnetic properties have been studied, where L-1 and L2 are the bidentate Schiff bases obtained from the condensation of 2-pyridylaldehyde with aniline and p-chloroaniline, respectively. Both compounds consist of 1D uniform chains in which the Cu(II) ions with a distorted square pyramidal geometry are interlinked by single end-on azido bridges in the asymmetric basal-apical fashion, and the chains are interlinked by weak C-H---N hydrogen bonds into two-dimensional (2D) layers. They represent the first examples of metal azido complexes containing only single end-on azido bridges. Temperature- and field-dependent magnetic analyses reveal that weak antiferromagnetic interactions are mediated by the single asymmetric bridges, with the exchange parameters being -2.2 and -3.7 cm(-1) for 1 and 2, respectively.

Abstract:Three Cu(II) complexes of tetranuclear [Cu-4(cmpy)(4)(N-3)(5)Cl-3] (1), 1D chain [Cu-2(cea)(2)(N-3)(4)](n) (2), and two-dimensional layer [Cu-5(cmpy)(2)(N-3)(10)](n) (3) were synthesized by controlling the molar ratio of Cu(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O, pyCH(2)Cl center dot HCl (cmpy center dot HCl), or H2NCH2CH2Cl center dot HCl (cea center dot HCl) and sodium azide. For complexes 1-3, the atom Cl of the ligands (cmpy and cea) is located at the Jahn-Teller axis of Cu(II) with the weak Cu-Cl separations of 2.920(1) - 3.177(1) angstrom that are shorter than the sum of van der Waals radii of Cu and Cl atoms, 3.3 angstrom. The azide ligands coordinate to Cu(II) in the equatorial or basal plane of the coordination pyramid, favoring strong magnetic coupling. The bridging angles of Cu-N-azido-Cu in complexes 1-3 are nearly 101 degrees, corresponding to the presence of global ferromagnetic coupling. The end-to-end azide bridges appear exclusively in complex 3, linking the end-on azide-bridged ID chains into a 2D layer.
Heterometallic trinuclear CuIIMIII2 (M = Fe or Cr) complexes with novel bridges and unusual magnetic properties

Abstract:Three new trinuclear complexes based on [Cu(L-n)](2+) (L-1 = 1,5,8,12-tetramethyl-1,3,6,8,10,13-hexaazacyclotetradecane, L-2 = 1,3-propanediamine (tn)) and [M(bpb)(CN)(2)](-) (bpb(2-) = 1,2-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido)benzenate, M = Fe or Cr) have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The Cu(II) ions adopt an axially-elongated octahedron with four N atoms from the L-n ligands occupying the equatorial plane and another two atoms (cyano nitrogen atoms or amide oxygen atoms) from two [M(bpb)(CN)(2)](-) moieties at the axial positions, resulting in a neutral linear trinuclear complex. Magnetic studies show that the CuFe2 compound bridged by the amido group exhibits ferromagnetic behaviour. The two cyano-bridged CuFe2 or CuCr2 compounds show unusual magnetic properties: weak antiferromagnetic Cu(II)-Fe(III) coupling and negligible Cu(II)-Cr(III) magnetic exchange, proved by the results of the field dependence of magnetization.

Abstract:With the use of the tailored cyanometalate precursor, (Bu4N)[(Tp)Fe(CN)3] (Tp = Tris(pyrazolyl)hydroborate) as the building block to react with fully solvated Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) cations, four one-dimensional (1D) heterobimetallic cyano-bridged chain complexes of squares, [(Tp)2Fe(III)2(CN)6Cu(CH3OH).2CH3OH]n (1), [(Tp)2Fe(III)2(CN)6Cu(DMF).DMF]n (2), [(Tp)2Fe(III)2(CN)6M(CH3OH)2.2CH3OH]n (M = Co (3) and Ni (4)), have been prepared. In complexes 1 and 2, the Cu(II) ions are pentacoordinated in the form of a slightly distorted square-based pyramid, and they are linked by distorted octahedrons of [(Tp)Fe(CN)3]- to form 1D chains of squares. In complexes 3 and 4, both the central Co(II) and Ni(II) ions have a slightly distorted octahedral coordination geometry, and they are bridged by [(Tp)Fe(CN)3]- to form similar 1D chains of squares. There are weak interchain pi-pi stacking interactions through the pyrazolyl groups of the Tp ligands for complexes 3 and 4. The crystal structures and magnetic studies demonstrate that complexes 1 and 2 exhibit intrachain ferromagnetic coupling and single-chain magnets behavior, and the blocking temperature is ca. 6 K for complex 1 and ca. 3 K for complex 2. Complexes 3 and 4 show significant metamagnetic behavior, where the cyanides mediate the intrachain ferromagnetic coupling between Fe(III) and Co(II) or Ni(II) ions and the interchain pi-pi stacking interactions lead to antiferromagnetic couplings. The field dependence of the magnetization measurements shows that the critical field is around 1 kOe for complex 3 and 0.8 kOe for complex 4 at 1.8 K.

Abstract:The synthesis, and crystal structure at room temperature of the three-dimensional manganese(II) complex with bridging 4,4′-bipyridine [Mn(4,4′-bipy) (N3)2]n, in which the coordination mode of the azido ligand is end-to-end, are presented. The magnetic behavior for this compound is studied to show a weak antiferromagnetism to ferromagnetism transition at about 50 K, and is attributed to a canting phenomenon.

Abstract:Four azido-bridged dinuclear Mn(II) complexes, [Mn2(phen)4 μ-1,1-N3)2][FeIII(bpmb)(CN)2]2·H2O (1), [Mn2(phen)4(μ-1,1-N3)2][FeIII(bpClb)(CN)2]2·H2O (2), and [Mn2(phen)4(μ-1,1-N3)2][MIII(bpdmb)(CN)2]2·3H2O [M = Fe (3) or Cr (4); phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, bpmb2– = 1,2-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido)-4-methyl-benzenate, bpClb2– = 1,2-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido) 4-chloro-benzenate, bpdmb2– = 1,2-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido)-4,5-dimethyl-benzenate], have been synthesized using the synthetic strategy of large anion inducement. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that all four complexes are doubly end-on (EO) azido-bridged binuclear Mn(II) complexes with two large [M(L)(CN)2]– (L = bpmb2−, bpClb2−, or bpdmb2−) building blocks acting as charge-compensating anions. The magnetic properties of the complexes have been investigated, and the results indicate that the magnetic coupling between two Mn(II) centers through the EO azide bridges is ferromagnetic, with J = 0.64(1) cm−1 for 1, 0.43(1) cm−1 for 2, 0.50(1) cm−1 for 3, and 0.66(2) cm−1 for 4. The magneto-structural relationships of EO azido-bridged Mn(II) systems are discussed.

Abstract:Long-range interactions are found in a neutral sheetlike copper compound in which each CuII ion is bridged by alternating end-on and end-to-end azide groups (see picture). Magnetic studies show unusual ferromagnetic interactions between CuII ions through both kinds of azide bridges in this complex (order at Tc=7 K), which is the first two-dimensional metal-azide-bridged compound with long-range ferromagnetic ordering properties.
A Dicobalt(II) Single-Molecule Magnet via a Well-Designed Dual-Capping Tetrazine Radical Ligand

Abstract:The recent years have witnessed the glory development for the construction of high-performance mononuclear single molecule magnets (SMMs) within a specific coordination geometry, which, however, is not well applied in cluster-based SMMs due to the synthetic challenges. Given that the monocobalt(II) complexes within a trigonal-prismatic (TPR) coordination geometry have been classified as excellent SMMs with huge axial anisotropy (D ≈ -100 cm-1), here we designed and synthesized a new dual-capping tetrazine ligand, 3,6-bis(6-(di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (bpptz), and prepared a novel dicobalt(II) complex, [Cp2CoIII][{(hfac)CoII}2(bpptz•-)][hfac]2·2Et2O (1, hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate). In the structure of 1, the bpptz•- radical ligand enwraps two Co(II) centers within quasi-TPR geometries, which are further bridged by the tetrazine radical in the trans mode. The magnetic study revealed that the interaction between the Co centers and the tetrazine radical is strongly antiferromagnetic with a coupling constant (J) of -65.8 cm-1 (in the -2J formalism). Remarkably, 1 exhibited the typical SMM behavior with an effective energy barrier of 69 cm-1 under a 1.5 kOe dc field, among the largest for polynuclear transition metal SMMs. In addition, DFT and ab initio calculations suggested that the presence of a strong Co(II)-radical magnetic interaction effectively quenches the QTM effect and enhances the barrier height for the magnetization reversal.

Anionic Modification of the Cu-Tb Single-Molecule Magnets Based on the Compartmental Schiff-Base Ligand

Abstract:By using different anions, three Cu - Tb metal complexes, namely [Cu-2(vanophen)(2)TbCl2(MeOH)(2)]Cl center dot 3MeOH (1), [Cu-2(vanophen)(2)TbCl2(MeOH)(2)]( TCNQ)(1.5)center dot 2MeOH (2), and [Cu-2(vanophen)(2)Tb-2(N-3)(6)]center dot 2MeOH (3), based on the compartmental Schiff-base ligand H(2)vanophen (H(2)vanophen=N, N'-bis(2-oxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine, TCNQ=7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Except for the different charge-balancing anions, complexes 1 and 2 have a very similar trinuclear [CuTbCu] structure, where the Cu.. ions are in the [N2O4] coordination pockets of the ligands, while the Tb.. ion is coordinated by all or some of the oxygen atoms from the [O-4] pocket of the ligands. The charge-balancing anion is a Cl- ion in 1, while the positive charge is balanced by one TCNQ-0.5 radical and a half of the TCNQ- radical in 2. As for complex 3, it has a tetranuclear [CuTb](2) structure, where two [CuTb] units are bridged by end-end and end-on azides. Magnetic studies revealed that both 1 and 2 are field-induced SMMs while 3 is a zero-field SMM. The energy barriers of 1 and 3 were estimated to be (11.1 +/- 0.3) cm(-1) and (20.2 +/- 0.3) cm(-1), respectively. As for complex 2, its energy barrier was lower than that of 1, which might be due to the weak magnetic interaction between the [CuTbCu] unit and the paramagnetic radical anions. A Three-Dimensional Ferromagnet Based On Linked Copper-Azido Clusters

Abstract:Two novel three-dimensional coordination polymers [Cu-6(N-3)(12)(N-Eten)(2)]n (1) (N-Eten = N-ethylethylenediamine) and {[Cu-9(N-3)(18)(1,2-pn)(4)](H2O)-H-.}(n) (2) (1,2-pn = 1,2-diaminopropane) have been synthesized by the self-assembly reactions of Cu(NO3)(2)(.)3H(2)O, NaN3 and small diamine ligands. Their molecular structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 is composed of a neutral 3D coordination framework based on unprecedented hexanuclear copper(II) clusters which features three types of bridging modes for azide (mu-1,1, mu-1,3 and mu-1,1,3). Complex 2 is a novel 3D coordination polymer featuring octanuclear copper-azido clusters and [ Cu( diamine) 2] 2+ units which are linked by azido bridges. Magnetic studies for complex 1 show ferromagnetic ordering at 3.5 K, where the azido bridges mediate ferromagnetic coupling between adjacent Cu( II) ions. The magnetic data for 1 were fitted to a uniform hexanuclear copper model which yielded g = 2.21, J = 6.26 cm(-1), zJ ' = 0.39 cm(-1). Complex 2 shows ferromagnetic coupling in the octanuclear unit and antiferromagnetic interaction between neighboring units.

Abstract:A new double asymmetric μ1,1-azido bridged binuclear copper(II) complex, [Cu2(μ1,1-N3)2(Him2-py)2(N3)2] (Him2-py = 2-(2′-pyridyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-hydroxy), has been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The crystal structure shows this complex is binuclear with copper(II) in a distorted square-pyramidal geometry, bridged by double asymmetric end-on azide ligands. The variable temperature magnetic susceptibility analyses reveal weak antiferromagnetic interaction mediated by the bridge.
Tricomponent Azide, Tetrazolate, and Carboxylate Cobridging Magnetic Systems: Ferromagnetic Coupling, Metamagnetism, and Single-Chain Magnetism

Abstract:Three novel coordination polymers with azide and a bifunctional zwitterionic ligand bearing carboxylate and tetrazolate as bridging groups, [M(L)(N(3))]·xH(2)O [L=1-(carboxylatomethyl)-4-(5-tetrazolato)pyridinium, M=Cu (1, x=2), Ni (2, x=1), and Co (3, x=1)], have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography and magnetic measurements. The compounds consist of two-dimensional coordination layers in which uniform anionic chains with the unprecedented tricomponent (μ-azide)(μ-tetrazolate)(μ-carboxylate) bridges are cross-linked by cationic 1-methylenepyridinium spacers. The tricomponent bridges induce ferromagnetic interactions in all the compounds. Furthermore, this isostructural series of ferromagnetic-chain-based compounds has allowed us to observe distinct bulk properties that are dependent upon the natures of the different spin carriers: with the isotropic Cu(II) ion, 1 exhibits a paramagnetic phase of the ferromagnetic chains without long-range magnetic order above 2 K; with the weakly anisotropic Ni(II) ions, 2 displays antiferromagnetic ordering and field-induced metamagnetism without slow dynamic relaxation; and with Co(II), which has strong magnetic anisotropy due to first-order spin-orbital coupling, 3 exhibits magnetic hysteresis and slow magnetization dynamics typical of single-chain magnets.

Abstract:A novel heteronuclear complex, [Tb 2 Zn 2 L 10 (bipy)(H 2 O) 2 ] 2 (HL = α -methylacrylic acid, bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine), was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and i.r. absorption spectra. Its structure, determined by X-ray diffraction, is a discrete octanuclear molecule, in which two Zn II ions are linked by a bipy molecule and between Tb III ions, or Tb III and Zn II ions are bridged by bidentate α -methylacrylato groups. Cyanide-bridged Single Molecule Magnet Based on a Manganese(iii) Complex with TTF-fused Schiff Base Ligand

Abstract:Reaction of [Mn(TTF-salphen)][OAc] (TTF-salphen 2− =2,2′-((2-(4,5-bis(methylthio)-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-1,3-benzodithiole-5,6-diyl)bis(nitrilomethylidyne)bis(phenolate)dianion) and the cyanometalate building blocks [ n -Bu 4 N][(Tp)Fe(CN) 3 ] (Tp − =Tris(pyrazolyl)hydroborate) or [ n -Bu 4 N][Ru(salen)(CN) 2 ] (salen 2− = N , N ′-ethylenebis(salicylideneimine)dianion) resulted in the formation of two redox-active complexes, the dinuclear heterometallic complex [(Tp)Fe(CN) 3 Mn(TTF-salphen)·CH 3 OH] ( 1 ) and the one dimensional complex [Ru(salen)(CN) 2 Mn(TTF-salphen)] n ( 2 ). Both complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography and solid state electrochemistry, in addition to static and dynamic magnetic measurements. Antiferromagnetic couplings are found to be operative between metal ion centers bridged by cyanide in both complexes. Complex 1 exhibited field-induced SMM behavior with an energy barrier of 13.8 K. The introduction of the redox-active TTF unit into cyanide-bridged complexes with interesting magnetic properties renders them promising candidates for the construction of new hybrid inorganic-organic materials.

Abstract:A novel heteronuclear complex, [TbZnL(bipy)(HO)] (HL = -methylacrylic acid, bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine), was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and i.r. absorption spectra. Its structure, determined by X-ray diffraction, is a discrete octanuclear molecule, in which two Zn ions are linked by a bipy molecule and between Tb ions, or Tb and Zn ions are bridged by bidentate -methylacrylato groups. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of the complex shows strong ferromagnetic interaction between the terbium atoms.
