Preparation of Magnetic Dummy Molecularly Imprinted Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles Using a Semi-Covalent Imprinting Approach for the Rapid and Selective Removal of Bisphenols from Environmental Water Samples

Abstract:The purification of water contaminated with organic pollutants has recently been gaining increasing attention. In this study, magnetic dummy molecularly imprinted mesoporous silica nanoparticles ( m-DMI-MSNPs ) based on the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @mSiO 2 structure were successfully synthesised for the rapid and selective removal of bisphenols (BPs) from tap water and sewage influents. The morphology and magnetic properties of the m-DMI-MSNPs were characterised using transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The resulting m-DMI-MSNPs presented a uniform mesoporous silicon-imprinted coating and excellent magnetic separation ability. The construction of the mesoporous silicon-imprinted shell combines a dummy template and semi-covalent imprinting strategy using phenolphthalein as a novel and non-toxic dummy template. More importantly, the m-DMI-MSNPs showed excellent recognition selectivity towards BPs with imprinting factors of 7.6, 8.2, and 7.5 for bisphenols F (BPF), bisphenols E (BPE), and Bisphenols A (BPA), respectively. Fast binding kinetics (equilibrium time, <1 min) and a high rebinding capacity (maximum adsorption capacity, 133.10 μmol g –1 ) were observed in the adsorption experiments. The m-DMI-MSNPs, which combine good water compatibility, class-selectivity, and magnetic separation performance, exhibited excellent performance for the removal of BPF, BPE, and BPA from pure water, tap water, and sewage influent samples, with removal efficiencies in the ranges of 96.6–97.8, 95.6–97.1, and 93.1–95.3%, respectively. Overall, the results of this study show that the newly synthesised m-DMI-MSNP sorbent possesses great potential for the rapid and highly effective removal of BPs from environmental water samples.
