Abstract:[Fe]-hydrogenase has a single iron-containing active site that features an acylmethylpyridinol ligand. This unique ligand environment had yet to be reproduced in synthetic models; however the synthesis and reactivity of a new class of small molecule mimics of [Fe]-hydrogenase in which a mono-iron center is ligated by an acylmethylpyridinol ligand has now been achieved. Key to the preparation of these model compounds is the successful C-O cleavage of an alkyl ether moiety to form the desired pyridinol ligand. Reaction of solvated complex [(2-CH2CO-6-HOC5H3N)Fe(CO)2(CH3CN)2](+)(BF4)(-) with thiols or thiophenols in the presence of NEt3 yielded 5-coordinate iron thiolate complexes. Further derivation produced complexes [(2-CH2CO-6-HOC5H3N)Fe(CO)2(SCH2CH2OH)] and [(2-CH2CO-6-HOC5H3N)Fe(CO)2(CH3COO)], which can be regarded as models of FeGP cofactors of [Fe]-hydrogenase extracted by 2-mercaptoethanol and acetic acid, respectively. When the derivative complexes were treated with HBF4 ⋅Et2O, the solvated complex was regenerated by protonation of the thiolate ligands. The reactivity of several models with CO, isocyanide, cyanide, and H2 was also investigated.

Abstract:[FeFe]-hydrogenases are enzymes in nature that catalyze the reduction of protons and the oxidation of H2 at neutral pH with remarkably high activities and incredibly low overpotential. Structural and functional biomimicking of the active site of [FeFe]-hydrogenases can provide helpful hints for elucidating the mechanism of H2 evolution and uptake at the [FeFe]-hydrogenase active site and for designing bioinspired catalysts to replace the expensive noble metal catalysts for H2 generation and uptake. This perspective focuses on the recent progress in the formation and reactivity of iron hydrides closely related to the processes of proton reduction and hydrogen oxidation mediated by diiron dithiolate complexes. The second section surveys the bridging and terminal hydride species formed from various diiron complexes as well as the intramolecular proton transfer. The very recent progress in H2 activation by diiron dithiolate models are reviewed in the third section. In the concluding remarks and outlook, the differences in structure and catalytic mechanism between the synthetic models and the native [FeFe]-H2ase active site are compared and analyzed, which may cause the need for a significantly larger driving force and may lead to lower activities of synthetic models than the [FeFe]-H2ases for H2 generation and uptake.

Abstract:To further develop the biomimetic chemistry of [FeFe]- and [NiFe]-hydrogenases for catalytic proton reduction to hydrogen (H2), two serials of dinuclear diiron and trinuclear NiFe2 dithiolate complexes with chelating PCNCP ligands, namely, Fe2(μ-edt)(CO)4{κ2-(Ph2PCH2)2NR} (1a–1c) and Fe2(CO)6(μ3-S)2Ni{(Ph2PCH2)2NR} (2a–2c) where edt = SCH2CH2S and PCNCP = (Ph2PCH2)2NR [R = Bui (CH2CHMe2), But (CMe3), and Bun (CH2CH2CH2Me)], have been synthesized in moderate yields. All the new complexes 1a–1c and 2a–2c have been fully characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, NMR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. More importantly, to explore the influence of transition metal cores (i.e., nickel and iron) on the electrochemical and electrocatalytic properties of hydrogenase-inspired molecular catalysts for H2 evolution, the cyclic voltammetries (CVs) of 1a–1c and 2a–2c are studied and compared in nBu4NPF6/DMF solution without and with acetic acid (HOAc) as a proton source. This finding suggests that (i) complexes 1a–1c and 2a–2c are all found to be active for electrocatalytic H2 evolution, but (ii) they display the distinct redox behaviors and electrocatalytic proton reduction abilities.

Abstract:The combined structural and functional modeling study of [Fe]-H2ase has remained a great challenge, to date. Now, we report a series of new structural and functional [Fe]-H2ase models (1-6) that contain a mono-, di- or tetrasubstituted pyridine ligand with a biomimetic fac-C, N, S ligation. While models 1-3, 5 and 6 are conveniently prepared by a novel flexible pyridine ligand (FPL)-based method, model 4 is prepared simply by intramolecular CO replacement reaction of model 3. More interestingly, the structural study by spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography proves that these new models include a biomimetic fac-acyl (or methylene) C, pyridyl N, thioether S ligation to an Fe(II) center and the C-Fe(II) σ bond is trans to an iodo ligand. In addition, the chemical reactivity study proves that they all have the enzyme-like H2 activation and hydride transfer function in the presence of imidazolium Im+, AgBF4 and Et3N. Particularly interesting is that a possible pathway for such H2 activation and hydride transfer reactions catalyzed by a representative model 4 is proposed and the existence of the highly unstable 5-coordinate intermediate M4 and Fe-H species M5 is supported by isolation and characterization of their MeCN-coordinated derivative 7 and chloro-substituted derivative 8, respectively.

Abstract:The catalytic cycles for H-2 oxidation in [NiFe] and [FeFe] hydrogenases have been investigated through density functional theory (DFT) for a wide variety of redox and protonated structures of the active site models, (CO)(CN)(2)Fe(mu-SMe)(2)Ni(SMC)(2) and L(CO)(CN)Fe((mu-SCH2)(2)X)(mu-CO)Fe(CO)(CN)(SMe), respectively. By combining a calibration curve for the calculated CO bond distances and frequencies and the measured IR stretching frequencies from related complexes with the DFT calculations on the [NiFe] model, the redox states and structures of the active site are predicted. Dihydrogen activation on the Fe(II)-Ni(III) species is more favorable than on the corresponding Ni(II) or Ni(I) species. Our final proposed structures are consistent with IR, EPR, and ENDOR measurements and the correlation coefficient between the measured CO frequency in the enzyme and the CO distance/frequency calculated for the model species is excellent. The unconstrained optimized geometries for high-spin Ni(II) species and for the Ni(III) species involved in the H-2-cleavage reaction, especially the transition state, show remarkable structural resemblance to the active site in the enzyme crystal structure. For the [FeFe] modeling, full frequency calculations on models for the active site and for well-characterized complexes show that observed and catalytically active redox species in the enzyme must correspond to Fe(II)-Fe(II), Fe(II)-Fe(I), and Fe(I)-Fe(I). Furthermore, when X is NH rather than CH2, a single Fe and this N create a very favorable thermodynamic path for the heterolytic cleavage of H-2. The H-2-cleaved species shows an unusually short "dihydrogen bond", Fe-H ---- H-N.

Abstract:As a further exploration of the desirable diiron subsite models of [FeFe]-hydrogenases for hydrogen (H2) evolution, the asymmetrically PNP-chelate diiron ethanedithiolate complexes Fe2(μ-edt)(CO)4{κ2-(Ph2P)2NR} (1–3) can be synthesized in good yields through the substitution reactions of diiron all-carbonyl complexes Fe2(μ-edt)(CO)6 (A, edt = SCH2CH2S) with different PNP ligands (PNP = (Ph2P)2NR, R = (CH2)2CHMe2, (CH2)3OMe, (CH2)3SMe) in the presence of Me3NO·2H2O as decarbonylating agent. These new complexes 1–3 have been fully characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, NMR spectroscopy, and particularly for 1 by X-ray crystallography. Further, the electrochemical and electrocatalytic properties of complexes 1–3 and their precursor A as a reference compound are studied and compared through cyclic voltammetry (CV) in the absence and presence of HOAc as a proton source, suggesting that they are all found to be electrochemically active but show the distinct electrocatalytic abilities for proton reduction to H2.

Abstract:Despite a variety of [Fe]-H 2 ase models prepared so far, the structural and functional modeling study of the enzyme has remained a great challenge. Now, we report a new type of flexible pyridine ligand (FPL)-based synthetic method by which two novel [Fe]-H 2 ase models have been prepared. Notably, the two models contain not only a biomimetic fac -acyl C, pyridyl N, thioether S coordination mode but also possess the enzyme-like H 2 /D 2 activation functions.

Abstract:Three diiron dithiolate complexes containing rigid and conjugated bridges, [μ-SC6H4-2-(CO)S-μ]Fe2(CO)6 (1), [2-μ-SC5H3N-3-(CO)S-μ]Fe2(CO)6 (2), and the PPh3-monosubstituted complex [μ-SC6H4-2-(CO)S-μ]Fe2(CO)5(PPh3) (1-P), were prepared as biomimetic models for the [FeFe]-hydrogenase active site. The structures of complexes 1 and 2 were determined by single crystal X-ray analysis, which shows that each complex features a rigid coplanar dithiolate bridge with a 2–3° deviation from the bisect plane of the molecule. The influence of the rigid bridge on the reduction potentials of complexes 1, 2 and 1-P was investigated by electrochemistry. The cyclic voltammograms of complexes 1 and 2 display large positive shifts for the primary reduction potentials, that is, 380–480mV in comparison to that of the pdt-bridged (pdt=propane-1,3-dithiolato) complex (μ-pdt)Fe2(CO)6 and 160–260mV to that of the bdt-bridged (bdt=benzene-1,2-dithiolato) analogue (μ-bdt)Fe2(CO)6.

Abstract:A combined experimental;and computational investigation of the CO dissociation properties of three [Fe]-hydrogenase models, [(2-CH2CO-6-HOC5H3N)Fe(CO)(3)I] (1), [(2-CH2CO-6-MeOC5H3N)Fe(CO)(3)I] (2), and [(2-CH2CO-6-tBuOC(5)H(3)N)Fe(CO)(3)I] (3), shows equilibria of tricarbonyl and dicarbonyl complexes in solution. In CH3CN, 1 transforms to the solvated product [(2;CH2CO-6-HOC5H3N)Fe-(CO)(2)(CH3CN)I] (7). The reactivity of 2 with PPh3 was also explored; giving [(2-CH2CO-6,MeOC5H3N)Fe(CO)(2)(PPh3)I] (8) via, one CO substitution by PPh3.
Nickel-ruthenium-based complexes as biomimetic models of [NiFe] and [NiFeSe] hydrogenases for dihydrogen evolution

Abstract:The two heterodinuclear nickel-ruthenium complexes [Ni(xbSmS)RuCp(PPh3)]PF6 and [Ni(xbSmSe)RuCp(PPh3)]PF6 (H2xbSmS = 1,2-bis(4-mercapto-3,3-dimethyl-2-thiabutyl)benzene, H2xbSmSe = 1,2,-bis(2-thiabutyl-3,3-dimethyl-4-selenol)benzene, Cp = cyclopentadienyl) were synthesized as biomimetic models of [NiFe] and [NiFeSe] hydrogenases. The X-ray structural analyses of the complexes show that the two NiRu complexes are isomorphous; in both NiRu complexes the nickel(ii) centers are coordinated in a square-planar environment with two thioether donor atoms and two thiolate or selenolate donors that are bridging to the ruthenium(ii) center. The Ru(ii) ion is further coordinated to a η5-cyclopentadienyl group and a triphenylphosphane ligand. These complexes catalyze hydrogen evolution in the presence of acetic acid in acetonitrile solution at around -2.20 V vs. Fc+/Fc with overpotentials of 810 and 830 mV, thus they can be regarded as functional models of the [NiFe] and [NiFeSe] hydrogenases.
Variable Mechanisms for Cobalt-Catalyzed Alkyne Dimerization Pinpointed by Quasi-Classical Trajectory Simulations

Abstract:Transition metal-catalyzed alkyne dimerization represents a powerful method for the construction of enynes. However, the ambiguous hydrogen transfer mechanism during the dimerization has resulted in controlling the regio-, stereo-, and, where applicable, chemoselectivity remaining a long-standing challenge. Herein, a combination of DFT calculations and quasi-classical MD simulations was used to interrogate the dynamic motion of hydrogen in cobalt-catalyzed alkyne dimerization. The collective results inspired us to propose, for the first time, a substrate-dependent differential hydride transfer model involving either concerted oxidative hydrogen transfer or stepwise oxidative addition, followed by alkyne insertion. The practicability and universality of this oxidative hydride transfer mechanism were further validated by the theoretical studies of experimentally observed selective cross- and homo-dimerization. Charge distribution analyses depicted that the differentiation between those two hydride transfer mechanisms originates from the alpha-silicon effect, which can stabilize the neighboring negative charge of the alkyne. Furthermore, a comprehensive DFT study of the substituent effects of alkynes reveals that the electron-withdrawing group will accelerate the oxidative hydride transfer process, which can open up avenues for mechanistic-oriented selective dimerization.
Models of the Ni-L and Ni-SIa States of the [Nife]-Hydrogenase Active Site

Abstract:A new class of synthetic models for the active site of [NiFe]-hydrogenases are described. The Ni(I/II)(SCys)2 and Fe(II)(CN)2CO sites are represented with (RC5H4)Ni(I/II) and Fe(II)(diphos)(CO) modules, where diphos = 1,2-C2H4(PPh2)2(dppe) or cis-1,2-C2H2(PPh2)2(dppv). The two bridging thiolate ligands are represented by CH2(CH2S)2(2-) (pdt(2-)), Me2C(CH2S)2(2-) (Me2pdt(2-)), and (C6H5S)2(2-). The reaction of Fe(pdt)(CO)2(dppe) and [(C5H5)3Ni2]BF4 affords [(C5H5)Ni(pdt)Fe(dppe)(CO)]BF4 ([1a]BF4). Monocarbonyl [1a]BF4 features an S = 0 Ni(II)Fe(II) center with five-coordinated iron, as proposed for the Ni-SIa state of the enzyme. One-electron reduction of [1a](+) affords the S = 1/2 derivative [1a](0), which, according to density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electron paramagnetic resonance and Mössbauer spectroscopies, is best described as a Ni(I)Fe(II) compound. The Ni(I)Fe(II) assignment matches that for the Ni-L state in [NiFe]-hydrogenase, unlike recently reported Ni(II)Fe(I)-based models. Compound [1a](0) reacts with strong acids to liberate 0.5 equiv of H2 and regenerate [1a](+), indicating that H2 evolution is catalyzed by [1a](0). DFT calculations were used to investigate the pathway for H2 evolution and revealed that the mechanism can proceed through two isomers of [1a](0) that differ in the stereochemistry of the Fe(dppe)CO center. Calculations suggest that protonation of [1a](0) (both isomers) affords Ni(III)-H-Fe(II) intermediates, which represent mimics of the Ni-C state of the enzyme.

Abstract:In order to develop an attractive generation of bulky oxadithiolate-bridged [FeFe]‐hydrogenase mimics with chelating diphosphines, two new series of asymmetrically diphosphine-substituted diiron model complexes [Fe2(μ-R2odt)(CO)4(κ2-diphosphine)] (3–5) with bulky Ph2odt bridge and their reference counterparts (6–8) with common odt bridge were obtained from the Me3NO-assisted substitutions of diiron hexacarbonyl precursors [Fe2(μ-R2odt)(CO)6] (R2odt = (SCHR)2O, R = Ph (1) and H (2)) with different diphosphines such as (Ph2P)2NBn (labelled PNBnP, Bn = benzyl), (Ph2PCH2)2NBn (PCNBnCP), and (Ph2PCH2)2CH2 (DPPP)), respectively. All the as-prepared complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR plus NMR spectroscopies, and particularly by X-ray crystallography for 3–8. It is interesting to note that complexes 3 and 6 chelating by small bite-angle PNBnP diphosphine have the favorable dibasal isomer whereas analogues 4, 5 and 7, 8 chelating by flexible backbone PCNBnCP or DPPP ligands possess the main apical-basal isomer in solution or in the solid state. Further, the electrochemical properties of two pairs of representative complexes 3, 6 and 5, 8 are explored and compared by cyclic voltammetry (CV) in the absence and presence of trifluoroacetic acid (CF3CO2H) as proton source, indicating that the complete protonations of 3, 6 and 5, 8 with higher concentration of CF3CO2H lead to two new catalytic waves for the electrocatalytic proton reduction to hydrogen (H2).

Abstract:Recently, substantial efforts had been made in the field of synthetic iron compounds as structural and functional models of the hydrogenase enzyme active site for the purpose of developing potential catalysts for effective and inexpensive hydrogen evolution. Amongst the bioinspired mimics, the iron carbonyl compounds bearing aromatic dithiolate bridged ligands featured the robust and tunable reductions at relatively positive potentials, and provided an appealing scaffold for easily molecular engineering, modular variation, functionalized incorporation/encapsulation of the mimetic compounds. This article surveyed and discussed a wide variety of mono-, di-, poly-nuclear iron carbonyl compounds with aromatic dithiolate bridges as synthetic "artificial" mimics of the catalytic site of [FeFe] hydrogenase in terms of structures, syntheses, redox properties, electrocatalytic characteristics in organic and aqueous solutions, and photocatalytic hydrogen evolutions. We hope that the descriptions and discussions in present review will shed light on some helpful aspects for further development of new generations of artificial catalysts for a future hydrogen economy.

Abstract:[FeFe] hydrogenase mimics: two polynuclear iron-sulfur complexes (1 and 2) were prepared and structurally characterized. They are potentially effective and stable multielectron-transfer relays for mediating four- and six-electron transformations via a cascade of reversible two-electron redox steps with relatively narrow potential spans.

Abstract:The preparation and characterization of two novel amino-incorporated sulfur-bridged dinuclear iron (I) complexes of the type [NR(μ-SCH2)2]Fe2(CO)6, one being amino protected [N(CH2CH2NHTs)(μ-SCH2)2]Fe2(CO)6 (8) and the other [(μ- SCH2)2Fe2(CO)6NCH2CH2N (μ-SCH2)2]Fe2(CO)6 (9) are described. These two complexes are readily prepared in a SN2 manner between double lithium anion and bis(chloromethyl) amine derivatives. The structures of 8 and 9 were characterized by IR, 1H, 13C NMR, MS and HRMS spectra and further determined by X-ray analyses. Protonation of complex 8 gave the mono N-protonated product, while for 9 the protonation occurred in both of the N atoms. The redox properties were evaluated by cyclic voltammograms. It was shown that these two complexes can catalyze electrochemical reduction of proton to molecular hydrogen.

Abstract:A diiron dithiolate complex with a pendant phosphine coordinated to one of the iron centers, [(μ-SCH2)2N(CH2C6H4-o-PPh2){Fe2(CO)5}] (1), was prepared and structurally characterized. The pendant phosphine is dissociated together with a CO ligand in the presence of excess PMe3, to afford [(μ-SCH2)2N(CH2C6H4-o-PPh2){Fe(CO)2(PMe3)}2] (2). Redox reactions of 2 and related complexes were studied in detail by in situ IR spectroscopy. A series of new Fe(II)Fe(I) ([3](+) and [6](+)), Fe(II)Fe(II) ([4](2+)), and Fe(I)Fe(I) (5) complexes relevant to Hox, Hox(CO), and Hred states of the [FeFe]-hydrogenase active site were detected. Among these complexes, the molecular structures of the diferrous complex [4](2+) with the internal amine and the pendant phosphine co-coordinated to the same iron center and the triphosphine diiron complex 5 were determined by X-ray crystallography. To make a comparison, the redox reactions of an analogous complex, [(μ-SCH2)2N(CH2C6H5){Fe(CO)2(PMe3)}2] (7), were also investigated by in situ IR spectroscopy in the absence or presence of extrinsic PPh3, which has no influence on the oxidation reaction of 7. The pendant phosphine in the second coordination sphere makes the redox reaction of 2 different from that of its analogue 7.
