Abstract:Lithium sulfur (Li-S) battery is one promising candidate for high energy density electrochemical energy storage system. Accelerating the sluggish reaction kinetics of sulfur cathode and suppressing the lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttle are crucial for the high-performance Li-S batteries. Herein, we prepared the catalytic palladium nano-particles (Pd NPs) imbedded in hollow carbon spheres (Pd@HCS) as sulfur host by a sacrificial template method. Benefitting from the hollow nanostructure and strong chemisorption ability of Pd NPs, Pd@HCS can effectively mitigate the LiPS shuttling via physical and chemical pathways. Furthermore, the Pd NPs as one electrocatalyst can accelerate the redox reaction kinetics of LiPS. The theoretical calculation and X-ray absorption spectroscopy elucidate that the moderate Pd-S bonding between Pd NPs and sulfur species are beneficial to LiPS conversion. The Pd@HCS/S electrode delivers a high initial capacity of 1306 mAh g−1 and 885 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 C, as well as the good cycling stability (a slight capacity decay of 0.068% per cycle over 400 cycles at 1 C). The Pd@HCS/S cathode with the high sulfur loading of 5.88 mg cm−2 delivers an initial capacity of 873 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C and good capacity retention of 85% after 100 cycles.

Abstract:The lithium-sulfur battery is an ideal energy storage system owing to its high energy density. However, the implementations are still thwarted by dramatic capacity decay caused by the dissolution of lithium polysulfides, the low conductivity and the structural instability of the sulfur cathode originated from the volumetric changes during the charging/discharging process. Here, we design and synthesize polypyrrole (PPy)@MnO2@S spheres with dual core-shell structure. The sulfur nanoparticles (similar to 80 nm) located into the inside of the composite spheres facilitate fast Lithorn storage. The polar MnO2 hollow spheres can not only provide enough inner space for alleviating the volume expansion for sulfur, but also effectively moderate the dissolution of polysulfides by synergistic effect of structural restriction and chemical adsorption. Additionally, the second shell consists of PPy nano-particles serve as conductive frameworks and generate sufficient electrical conduction paths. The initial capacities of PPy@MnO2@S composite are up to 1488.1, 1132.6, 925.7 and 736.7 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C, 0.2 C, 0.5 C and 1 C, respectively. And a small capacity decay rate of 0.048% per cycle is achieved at the rate of 0.5 C over 500 cycles with an areal density of 3.3 mg cm(-2). Abstract:Hollow carbonized polypyrrole (PPy) spheres are synthesized using poly(methyl methacrylate–ethyl acrylate–acrylic acid) latex spheres as sacrificial templates. The hollow spherical carbonized PPy/sulfur composite cathode materials are prepared by heating the mixture of hollow carbonized PPy spheres and element sulfur at 155 °C for 24 h. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations show the hollow structures of the carbonized PPy spheres and the homogeneous distribution of sulfur on the carbonized PPy shells. The hollow spherical carbonized PPy/sulfur composite with 60.9 wt.% S shows high specific capacity and excellent cycling stability when used as the cathode materials in lithium/sulfur cells, whose initial specific discharge capacity reaches as high as 1320 mA h g−1 and the reversible discharge capacity retains 758 mA h g−1 after 400 cycles at 0.2C. The excellent electrochemical properties benefit from the hollow structures and the flexible shells of the carbonized PPy spheres.

Abstract:Porous hollow cobalt acid zinc (ZnCo2O4) spheres with special surface morphology were synthesized by a simple template-free method. ZnCo2O4 has both impactful adsorption and catalytic ability to lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), in addition, its porous surface greatly increases the number of active. Moreover, the hollow structure enables the ZnCo2O4 spheres to effectively alleviate the expansion of electrode volume during the charging and discharging process applied in lithium-sulfur batteries. The cell with ZnCo2O4 spheres as the host shows a large reversible capacity of 600 mAh g−1 at a high rate of 10C, more importantly, the cycle stability of the lithium-sulfur battery has been greatly improved. At a high current density of 2C, the battery can still release a discharge capacity more than 700 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles with the capacity decay rate of only 0.015% per cycle.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are fascinating as next-generation high specific energy density storation devices. Herein, we report the fabrication of a three-dimensional porous hollow structure composed of a carbon aerogel assembled core etched via nano-CaCO3 and a polypyrrole nanoparticle shell as a sulfur scaffold for Li–S batteries. The as-prepared sulfur cathodes exhibit excellent reversible capacity (1031.9 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C), outstanding rate capability (566.5 and 477.2 mAh g–1 at 1 and 2 C, respectively), and superior cycling stability (74.2% capacity retention rate at 1 C). The improved electrochemical performance can be attributed to the extraordinary core–shell structure: the honeycomb-like carbon aerogel core provides fast transportation for the Li+/e–, and even sufficient free space for the volume expansion; the polypyrrole nanoparticle shell acts not only as a physical obstacle but also as a polar material to restrict the shuttling of polysulfides by chemical interaction. These inspiring results specify that such electrodes could empower high performance, fast charging, and flexible Li–S batteries through a tunable molecular self-assembly method to clad strong polar material on carbon materials.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The polysulfide shuttle phenomenon of lithium‑sulfur batteries restricts their practical applications. Herein, polypyrrole-coated hollow zeolite microcakes are first synthesized to reduce the polysulfide shuttle. The large surface area of hollow zeolite microcakes can increase the amount of sulfur storage. Moreover, the special hollow zeolite microcakes with polypyrrole coating enhance sulfur utilization. Consequently, the as-prepared composite electrode deliveres a capacity of 753 mAh g−1 after cycling 200 times at 0.1 A g−1, and a capacity of 460 mAh g−1 after cycling 500 times at 0.5 A g−1, which are much higher than those of the hollow zeolite microcakes without polypyrrole coating. These electrochemical characteristics make the composite a prospective sulfur host for lithium‑sulfur batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery attracts significant attention as the next-generation battery candidate due to its considerable theoretical energy density. However, the shuttle effect of polysulfides and relatively slow reaction kinetics of sulfur cathode severely hinder the commercial applications of the Li-S battery. Herein, we report NiCo2S4 yolk-shell hollow spheres used as an ideal sulfur host in Li-S battery for the first time. Benefiting from the unique yolk-shell hollow sphere structure and the bimetal sulfide component, the as-synthesized NiCo2S4 yolk-shell hollow spheres cannot only effectively physically absorb the polysulfides but also facilitate the polysulfides conversion. Accordingly, the cathode of S/NiCo2S4 composite with 70 wt% sulfur delivers notable cyclic stability up to 500 cycles at 0.5 C with a capacity decay rate of only 0.074% per cycle. Therefore, this unique NiCo2S4 yolk-shell hollow sphere could be considered an efficient sulfur host material candidate for high-energy density Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) and lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered as the most promising next-generation energy storage devices to displace the widely used lithium ion batteries due to their inherent advantages. Here, polypyrrole-encapsulated amorphous Bi2S3 hollow spheres are prepared by the sulfuration of Bi-glycol spheres with a polypyrrole (PPy) coating. Benefiting from the unique hollow structure (Kirkendall effect) and the excellent conductivity and flexibility of the PPy coating, this material can be applied in both SIBs and Li-S batteries. For SIBs, the unconductive amorphous Bi2S3 is electrochemically reduced to conductive metallic Bi, leading to a Bi-PPy core-shell structure. The resulting Bi acts as the main active material while the PPy coating accommodates the volume variation of Bi during sodiation/desodiation. For Li-S batteries, the outer double layer structure effectively prevents the dissolution and shuttle effect of polysulfides by physically containing and chemically adsorbing polysulfides, and tolerates the volume expansion of sulfur. Meanwhile, the residual polyvinyl pyrrolidone in the preparation process is chemically bonded with sulfur and exhibits the electrochemical properties, and results in additional discharging/charging capacity. Thus, this multifunctional electrode shows excellent rate capability and cycling life in SIBs and Li-S batteries. This work provides new insight into the design of multifunctional electrodes.

Abstract:We report engineered hollow core-shell interlinked carbon spheres that consist of a mesoporous shell, a hollow void, and an anchored carbon core and are expected to be ideal sulfur hosts for overcoming the shortage of Li-S batteries. The hollow core-shell interlinked carbon spheres were obtained through solution synthesis of polymer spheres followed by a pyrolysis process that occurred in the hermetical silica shell. During the pyrolysis, the polymer sphere was transformed into the carbon core and the carbonaceous volatiles were self-deposited on the silica shell due to the blocking effect of the hermetical silica shell. The gravitational force and the natural driving force of lowering the surface energy tend to interlink the carbon core and carbon/silica shell, resulting in a core-shell interlinked structure. After the SiO2 shell was etched, the mesoporous carbon shell was generated. When used as the sulfur host for Li-S batteries, such a hierarchical structure provides access to Li(+) ingress/egress for reactivity with the sulfur and, meanwhile, can overcome the limitations of low sulfur loading and a severe shuttle effect in solid carbon-supported sulfur cathodes. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy images provide visible evidence that sulfur is well-encapsulated in the hollow void. Importantly, such anchored-core carbon nanostructures can simultaneously serve as a physical buffer and an electronically connecting matrix, which helps to realize the full potential of the active materials. Based on the many merits, carbon-sulfur cathodes show a high utilization of sulfur with a sulfur loading of 70 wt % and exhibit excellent cycling stability (i.e., 960 mA h g(-1) after 200 cycles at a current density of 0.5 C).

Abstract:Inhibiting the polysulfide shuttle while maintaining high sulfur loading of sulfur cathode has been regarded as the major barriers to the practical applications of lithium-sulfur (LiS) batteries. To address these issues, a sandwich composite of hollow porous carbon spheres (HPCSs) and conductive delaminated-MXene nanosheets (d-Ti3C2) is designed by an electrostatic self-assembly approach as the sulfur hosts (denoted as HPCSs@d-Ti3C2). The hollow and porous merits of HPCSs can provide sufficient space for sulfur loading, while the conductive and polar MXene can chemisorb or bond polysulfides to inhibit the shuttle effect. Optimized packing of zero-dimensional (0D) HPCSs on 2D MXene nanosheets can not only accommodate volume expansion during polysulfide adsorption and conversion, but also prevent the aggregation of HPCSs to extend the lifetime of Li-S batteries. Consequently, the HPCSs@d-Ti3C2/S cathode with a high sulfur content of 76.5% has a strong physical and chemical co-adsorbing and/or chemical bonding with polysulfides to suppress the shuttle effect, and thus delivers satisfied sulfur utilization, rate capacities and cycling stability (only a capacity decay ratio of 0.069% per cycle on average). Such proposed design based on synergistic effects via nanoengineering is expected to be applicable to a large amount of MXene derived materials for various energy storage devices.

Abstract:A hollow and porous N‐doped carbon framework embedded with homogeneous Co nanoparticles is successfully prepared and employed as lithium‐sulfur battery interlayer. The N‐doping carbon frameworks with abundant pore structures greatly enhance chemisorption and confinement toward lithium polysulfides, thereby ensuring fast conversion of soluble LiPSs and solid Li2S and boosting the overall sulfur redox kinetics during discharge/charge. Lithium‐sulfur batteries (LSBs) have become one of the most powerful candidates for next‐generation battery technologies due to their high theoretical energy density and low cost. However, the notorious shuttle effect of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and sluggish conversion reaction kinetics cause low sulfur utilization and inferior cycle life. Rational catalyst design on hierarchical pore structures and composition optimization is highly desired to realize synergetic enrichment, accommodation, and catalytic redox capacity of sulfur species. In this consideration, the hollow and porous N‐doped carbon framework is prepared, in which Co nanoparticles (NPs) are evenly embedded (denoted as Co‐HMCF) to modulate electron cloud density of carbons. Electrochemical tests and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that Co‐HMCF could simultaneously deliver superior catalytic activity in accelerating LiPSs conversion as well as Li2S nucleation/decomposition to improve overall sulfur redox kinetics. Consequently, the Co‐HMCF interlayer significantly improves the battery performance, including high discharge capacity output (1538 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C), stable long‐term cycle (0.047% capacity decay per cycle for 800 cycles at 1.0 C), and exceptional rate capacity (582 mAh g−1 at 5.0 C).

Abstract:The shuttle effect of dissolved polysulfides migrating to and depositing on anodes often leads to low round-trip efficiency and short cycle life for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein, we report the rational design of cobalt-embedded nitrogen-doped hollow carbon microspheres () as a multifunctional sulfur host for Li-S batteries. The hollow carbon microspheres exhibit large central cavities wrapped by a hierarchically porous shell, showing a large surface area of 1954 m2 g-1. Furthermore, the carbon shells display a unique porous architecture, in which small pores are scattered on the outside and large pores are inside, thereby functioning as a selection barrier to confine polysulfides and diffuse Li+ simultaneously. Moreover, the highly dispersed cobalt nanoparticles in the porous shell activate the surrounding N-doped carbon layer, which not only promote chemical adsorption of polysulfides but also catalyze polysulfide conversion. This facilitation effect has been confirmed by Bader charge and density function theory (DFT) calculations. When applied in Li-S batteries, the sulfur-impregnated cathode material exhibits excellent electrochemical performances, especially with a high sulfur content of 90.5 wt% and a high areal sulfur loading of 5.1 mg cm-2.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries present the potential viable rechargeable batteries in the field of energy-storage devices. However, the migration of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and slow electrochemical reaction kinetics are still the intractable problems on the development of Li-S batteries. Herein, novel Ni/Ni2 hollow heterostructure microsphere, as the functional sulfur host material, is prepared by a facile approach. The study found that the novel hollow microsphere composed of porous carbon layer alleviates the volume expansion effect and effectively improves the electron transport during cycling process. In addition, the Ni/Ni2P heterostructure wrapped in carbon layer not only improves the adsorption of LiPSs, but also catalyzes their conversion reactions. Therefore, Li-S batteries with the S/Ni/Ni2 electrode exhibit high discharge capacity of 1187.3 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C in the first cycle, notable rate capability of 716.9 mAh g−1 at 3 C and outstanding reversible capacity of 636.6 mAh g−1 over the 500 cycles at 1 C. Abstract:A nitrogen-sulfur dual-doped porous carbon spheres/sulfur composite (PCS-NS/S) sample was prepared by a simple hydrothermal method with starch and L-methionine as carbon and nitrogen-sulfur resources, respectively. XRD, XPS, and N2 adsorption-desorption tests were used to characterize the crystal and pore structure of the PCS-NS/S sample. The morphology and weight ratio of sulfur were investigated by SEM, TEM, and TG analyses. The sample was used as the positive electrode for lithiumsulfur batteries and found to exhibit excellent electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Although lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are one of the most promising energy storage systems, the low electrical conductivity of sulfur, the serious shuttle of the dissolved lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and the large volume change during cycling greatly hinder the practical application of Li-S batteries. To overcome these issues, we report the in situ growing MnO2 nanosheets on the hollow nitrogen-doped micropore-rich carbon (NMRC) to form NMRC/2 nanocomposite with high sulfur content for advanced Li-S battery. The hollow nonpolar micropore-rich carbon nanospheres not only provide effectively structural confinement for active species but also accommodate the volume change during the charge–discharge process. The polar MnO2 nanosheets and doped nitrogen present strong chemisorption for LiPSs. Consequently, the synergistic dual-encapsulation from structural confinement and chemisorption makes the NMRC/2 nanocomposite has a theoretical sulfur loading of 72% and exhibit a high initial specific capacity of 1144 mAh·g−1 and a reversible capacity of 1023 mAh·g−1 after 200 cycles at 0.2 C. Even after 1000 cycles at 2.0 C, a capacity of 590 mAh·g−1 is maintained, among the best results for Li-S batteries. Our work reveals that the carefully design of sulfur-based composites with structural and chemical dual-encapsulation is promising to push forward the practical implementation of Li-S batteries.
