Abstract:The surge is a typical aerodynamic instability phenomenon in the compression system, which can lead to serious consequences such as engine performance degradation and structural damage. A deep understanding of the surge process can support the development of a compressor with a wider operating range. In this paper, an experimental study was carried out and high-responding pressure sensors were used to obtain the aerodynamic instability process and the post-surge characteristics of an axial–centrifugal compressor at design and off-design speeds. The evolution of the flow field and instability behavior before and after the surge were analyzed. The results showed that the inlet temperature change can reflect the aerodynamic instability to some extent, and as the operating condition moves from the choke to surge boundary, the inlet temperature undergoes a sudden increase at a certain condition and further increases with the decrease in mass flow rate. At the design speed, the instability of the combined compressor featured a deep surge with an obvious rotating stall behavior before its inception, and the amplitude of the stall cell was gradually enhanced, finally leading to the surge. At the off-design speed, affected by the stage mismatching, the axial stage mainly worked near the unstable operating condition. Therefore, the compressor successively experiences two modes of mild surge and deep surge, and the rotating stall can also be observed during the surge cycle.

Abstract:Surge is an unstable operating condition of the aero-engine that can move the engine into a destabilized state and cause devastating damage. One of the most popular topics in the academic and industrial communities is to figure out the mechanism of the surge and withdraw from the surge safely. Based on rig test results and practical data from engine operation, various theories of surge mechanisms have been proposed by researchers, and some classical analytical models have been developed for modelling and prediction. In recent years, with the rapid development of numerical simulation and the improvement of computational capability, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been widely applied to the investigation of axial compressor surge events. In this review, the principles and general characteristics of the surge phenomenon are first introduced. Subsequently, the main theoretical models and CFD simulations are presented, and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. In conclusion, we have proposed potential improvements and future technical routes for the surge phenomenon. The purpose of this paper is to provide a valuable reference for surge studies on axial compressors.

Abstract:Detecting compressor surge as soon as possible is essential to improve the performance of aero-engine and ensure flight safety.The pulsating strength of total pressure of the compressor outlet increases in the process of entering surge states,as well as the short-time energy.The short-time energy method is demonstrated feasible to detect surge with the testing data of a compressor throttling operation.This method can detect surge caused by either modal wave or spike precursor.The signal-to-noise ratio is improved by square processing.The algorithm is very simple and easy to realize.

Abstract:The centrifugal compressor is widely used for gas compression in various industrial fields such as aero-engine, gas turbine and turbocharger. However, the stable operating range is usually restricted by the occurrence of flow instability such as stall and surge. The paper experimentally examines the developing process of surge and stall occurring in a centrifugal compressor to advance the understanding on flow mechanism of flow instability. It is found that three types of pressure fluctuation can be observed at low flowrate region. At the critical point, the local stall firstly occurs in some specific diffuser passages and the enlarged local diffuser stall eventually induces the mild surge of compression system indicated by the sinusoidal pressure fluctuation. At lower mass flow rate, the diffuser stall cell begins to circumferentially propagate along the impeller rotating direction at 11% of rotor speed with the existence of mild surge. In comparative analysis of IGV pre-swirl angle on the occurrence of mild surge, the mild surge still occurs at the operating condition when the slope of the characteristic map of test stage is still obviously negative, in which the compression system is supposed to be stable in previous study. And a new suggested criterion for the prediction of mild surge is demonstrated that the occurrence of mild surge depends on the destabi-lization effect of downstream components about diffuser and volute. Combined with the experimental data, the streamwise distribution characteristic of diffuser stall can be used to develop the simplified model of lumped parameters for the analysis on the generation mechanism of the diffuser rotating stall. The quantitative investigation on the relation between the pressure-rise characteristic of subcomponents and the occurrence of mild surge and diffuser rotating stall not only advances the prediction of stability limit but also lays the theoretic foundation for controlling these unsteady behaviors to improve the operating range.

Compressor Surge Detection Based on Online Learning

Abstract:Compressor surges may destroy the structure in a very short time and cause serious disasters. An online detection system is necessary for ensuring safety of a compressor. In this paper, a collection of experimental data acquired in a multistage axial compressor while operated in surge is presented. The correlation integral algorithm is investigated. It is show that when the compressor operates in steady state, the correlation integral value keeps on a high level, while in surge, it drop down rapidly. The reference distance is analyzed, which can be chose with the statistical parameters of the reconstructed phase space. However, the reference distance can not be set as a constant. In this paper, we propose an online learning and detecting system. In this system, the reference distance is modified by learning the nearest data. Through comparing current value of correlation integral with the pre set threshold, the system determines output a surge warning signal or not. It is demonstrated that the system can detect the compressor surge very quickly and exactly.

Abstract:It is crucial to accurately identify where and when stall and surge occur in a centrifugal compressor. A centrifugal compressor with a vaned diffuser is chosen as an experimental object. Based on the multi-phase dynamic pressure measurement technology, the pressure signals at different radial locations, such as the impeller passage, the vaneless space and the diffuser throat, are acquired synchronously at different unstable operating conditions. By changing the angle of the diffuser vanes, the features of stall and surge phenomena at different conditions is obtained. It is analyzed and discussed about how to discern these two typical unsteady flow phenomena, and an index based on chaotic characteristics is proposed which can measure the proportion of deterministic components in the fluctuation of pressure fluctuation caused by stall and surge. It is found that the index can correspond to both the real-time signals and the results of standard deviation analysis. Thus, it can identify the moment and position about the original occurrence of stall and surge more accurately.

Abstract:Abstract The compressor is operated at unsteady exit conditions in many scenarios such as the instability of combustion in gas turbine and denotation engine. The aerodynamic stability of the compressor is inevitably influenced by the unsteady operating environment. In this paper, a one-dimensional (1D) model that combines pulsation and unsteady responses of the compressor is developed to investigate the stability of the compressor system. The results show that the onset of surge and the transient responses of the compressor during surge are well predicted by the method. The amplitude of the component at surge frequency obtained by fast Fourier transformation (FFT) method is applied as a criterion to quantitively evaluate the onset and the strength of the surge. Compressor stability is enhanced at pulsating conditions due to the interaction between forced oscillation of pulsation and self-sustained oscillation of surge. An analytical model is established to understand the mechanism of the enhancement of compressor stability under pulsation. The change of total energy of the compressing system is proposed to evaluate the influence of pulsating conditions. Specifically, the energy change is reduced for pulsation conditions due to two aspects: the lower slope of compressor characteristic curve due to the lag-effect of compressor responses and the higher energy dissipation due to the nonlinear throttling effect.

Abstract:Centrifugal compressors are widely used in many process industries. The stability is one of the most important characteristics of centrifugal compressor. When the compressor operates under the condition of small mass flow rate, the working conditions of rotating stall and surge will occur. The surge of the centrifugal compressor is researched by experiment. The signals are tested and analyzed when surge condition occurs in this paper. The suction and discharge pressures are tested under the surge working conditions. The pulsation frequency of the pressures is very small (6Hz), and it is about 0.03 of the rotating speed frequency. The vibration of the inlet pipes is researched as a parameter of the surge of compressor. The vibration test results show that it can be as an important signal to estimate the surge working condition. When the surge occurs, the pipe vibration amplitude at the low frequency is bigger, and it is about four times of that at the working frequency. However, the maximum amplitude of pipe vibration is not change with rotation speeds.

Abstract:Surge detecting is essential important to ensure compressors operation safety.The compressor exit total pressure is adopted as a characteristic signal to detect surges.An AR(autoregressive) model is constructed with the time series analysis method.It shows that an AR model is difficult to predict a sudden surge,because errors and delay are too large to be ignored in multi-step predication.The residual variance increases rapidly and model parameters are changed significantly while compressors surging.In this way,the surges can be detected reliably and timely with appropriate thresholds of the residual variance and model parameters.

Abstract:It is known that a compressor causes a flow instability phenomenon called surge when the flow rate becomes reduced. Previous studies performed a compressor performance test using an apparatus that simulated a turbocharger for cars. As a result, they have confirmed that surge frequencies differ depending on the capacity of the tank. In this study, performance tests of a compressor for a turbocharger were conducted to understand a mechanism of surge phenomena and to understand differences between them under the steady flow and the pulsating flow. The apparatus which was used at this time consists of a compressor, a pulsating flow generator, a tank, and a valve. Except for the compressor, they install on the downstream side of it in this apparatus. The pulsating flow generator and the tank are equivalent to an automobile engine. First, to understand the difference between the mild surge and the deep surge under steady flow, the flow rate and the pressure of the tank were measured by controlling the valve under five different rotational speeds. And the two types of surge phenomena (i.e. the mild surge and the deep surge) were determined. Compared to the mild surge and the deep surge, it was judged that the former has smaller fluctuations of the flow rate and weaker surge phenomena. And, Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis was performed on the measured pressure. It was found that the higher the rotation speed became, the lower the surge frequencies of the deep surge were, and the lower the rotation speed became, the weaker the strength of the surge phenomenon became. Next, it was investigated the difference in surge frequencies between the mild surge and the deep surge under pulsating flow with the rotation speed fixed. It was found that in the mild surge, the effect of pulsating flow on the surge phenomenon was significant, and it was confirmed that the surge frequencies were drawn into the pulsating frequencies. On the other hand, in the deep surge, the pressure fluctuation of the surge phenomenon became stronger than that of the mild surge, and a pattern of drawing was changed. In addition, unlike the mild surge, in the deep surge, the frequency range of draw in the same magnification between the given pulsating frequency and the obtained surge frequency narrowed. And, it was confirmed that the surge frequency was drawn into the pulsating frequency at half times rate and two times rate.

Abstract:Compressor surge is a typical unstable phenomenon generally resulting in violent aerodynamic oscillation in a compression system. Because of the hysteresis caused by the unsteady flow behaviors during the surge cycle in a compression system, some aerodynamic properties show clear distinctions with altered streamwise positions. In order to obtain the transient surge characteristics accurately in the experiment, the probes should be reasonably positioned along the streamwise positions. In this paper, a one-dimensional-three-dimensional (1D-3D) coupled method is used to study the streamwise variance of aerodynamic properties during the surge process in the compression system including a centrifugal compressor and downstream pipe system. The results show that for the mass flow rate, the surge amplitude decreases gradually along the downstream pipe. In contrast, the amplitude of the mid-frequency mass flow fluctuation caused by pressure wave propagation increases firstly and then decreases. For unsteady pressure characteristics, the amplitude of pressure oscillation during the surge cycle along the downstream pipe system is almost the same. For temperature characteristics, when the surge occurs, the strength of reverse flow increases dramatically, which makes the temperature increment near the casing wall at the compressor inlet come up to 60.6% of the temperature before surge inception, also the temperature increment is faster than the pressure response at compressor outlet. The variance analysis concerning aerodynamic properties along the streamwise direction of a compression system can provide the following guidance for engineering practice of surge test or monitoring: the transient mass flow probe should be placed close to the compressor outlet in order to obtain the dynamic mass flow characteristics more accurately, and the distance between pressure sensors and compressor outlet has little influence on the accuracy of dynamic pressure measurement in a surge cycle. Moreover, the surge inception can be judged accurately and quickly by placing high-frequency temperature sensors on the casing at the compressor inlet.

The one-dimensional-three-dimensional (1D-3D) coupled method, is established in Part 1, combines a 3D solver for compressor internal flows and a 1D solver for pipe, plenum, and throttle flows to simulate compressor surge in a compression system. In this paper, the capability of the method to reflect changes of compressor characteristics and system parameters will be demonstrated. Given a centrifugal compressor, variable inlet prewhirl and variable diffuser vanes are employed to adjust compressor characteristics; based on the setup of a datum test rig, the pipe length, plenum volume and throttle coefficient in the 1D solver are modified to get different system setups. Thus, the compressor system can be numerically configured with various compressor characteristics and system parameters, and the 1D-3D coupled method is applied to simulate compressor surge in various configurations. Simulation results show that compressor surge flow rates decrease, and surge periods prolong in the case of positive inlet prewhirl, which is consistent with known results concerning inlet prewhirl; if the diffuser vanes are closed by 5 degrees, the compressor would get out of surge and operate stably, which aligns with expectations. In terms of system parameters, simulation results indicate that the surge period is shortened and the trajectory of surge cycle on the performance map shrinks if the pipe length or plenum volume reduces. Mild surge, mixed surge, and deep surge are captured while the throttle is set with big, moderate and small openings, respectively. Thus, the 1D-3D coupled method is proved being sensitive to changes of compressor characteristics and system parameters, justifying using the 1D-3D coupled method to explore several research topics concerning compressor characteristics and system parameters in compressor surge. This paper lays a foundation of using the 1D-3D coupled method to investigate the relation between compressor surge and stall, compressor surge in a dynamic compression system, structures and dynamics during compressor surge, and the flow instability boundary.

Abstract:To seek the incipient symptom of surge in the centrifugal compressor,the frequency-domain characteristics of the pressure signal from the state far from surge to the state of full developed surge are analyzed by correlation integral method combining with zoom fast Fourier transform,and a new surge early warning method defining a parameter related with the frequency band energy as the measure is proposed according to the fact that the perturbed energy increases nonlinearly during the surge process.It is illustrated that the frequency band energy of surge is endowed with a visible increase process,and the time delay of 1 - 2 s between the initial rise and the full onset of surge is long enough to allow the effective response of the controller.The investigation offers a powerful support for the compressor to operate under safe and high-efficient condition.

Abstract:A calculational model for predicting the surge line of a turbocompressor system has been established which is composed of a centrifugal compressor, duct, coolers and condensers (gas-liquid separator). The influences of various parts of the system on the surge point have been studied in detail, and some discussion has been focused on the coolers and condensers. The influences of cooler, condenser and thermodynamic parameters of working medium on stability of the system is calculated and explained. This analysis is useful for predicting system character during the of design compressors and systems, as well as safety for operation of practical industry process.

Abstract:A numerical model of the whole compression system is established in this paper. The introduction of the Laval nozzle and opening boundary methods adaptively simulate the physical fluctuating boundary conditions during the surge without any artificial hypothesis. Based on the model, the steady simulation method has the capacity to well predict the low-order systematical oscillations during the surge by monitoring flow parameters on several representative surfaces. The surge boundaries of a high-speed centrifugal compressor, including the mild surge and the deep surge, are predicted based on the current numerical model in different flow regimes. The discrepancies of the mild surge boundary between experimental data and numerical predictions are within 5% in the transonic regime, but within 0.5% in the subsonic and supersonic regimes. The sensitivities of the mild surge to the throttle opening degree differ much in different flow regimes: the highest is in the transonic regime and the lowest is in the supersonic regime. In the supersonic regime, there exist various mild surges in a wide range of throttle opening degrees and an unstable equilibrium point (UEP) which is the most typical characteristic of the two-regime surge. To the best knowledge of the authors, it is the first time that all the oscillation characteristics of various mild surges and the existence of UEP in the supersonic regime are well predicted by one numerical method.

Abstract:This paper presents tests of an antisurge system based on pressure derivatives. The control algorithm was proven to work on different machines and with different unstable flow phenomena. Compressors are known to be affected by unstable flow conditions appearing at low mass flowrate conditions. The best known and most dangerous phenomenon is surge, which is a global instability affecting the entire impeller and regions upstream and downstream from it. A list of identified local phenomena includes among others: impeller rotating stall, diffuser rotating stall, and inlet recirculation. All have a specific pressure signature that is used for early identification. The method presented in this paper is based on a control parameter named the rate of derivative fluctuation (RDF). This approach involves a simple measure of flow instability that is universal and reacts to flow disturbances. RDF has been already confirmed to identify inlet recirculation and surge. The aim of this study is to conduct real-time tests of an antisurge system, implementing the RDF algorithm triggering the safety valve opening. The study confirmed the optimal position of the monitoring point. The results showed that the RDF is indeed sensitive to different types of flow instabilities appearing in different impellers, and that it provides efficient flow stability monitoring.
Fuzzy logic surge control in variable speed axial compressors

Abstract:This paper discusses active surge control in variable speed axial compressors. A compression system equipped with a variable area throttle is investigated. Based on a given compressor model, a fuzzy logic controller is designed for surge control and a proportional speed controller for speed control. The fuzzy controller uses measurements of the change of mass flow and the change of pressure rise to determine the control action. The presented approach does not require the knowledge of system equilibrium or the surge line. Simulation studies show promising results that the proposed fuzzy logic controller is capable to suppress surge at different operating points.

Abstract:Compression systems are widely employed in gas turbine engines, turbocharged engines, and industry compression plants. The stable work of compression systems is an essential precondition for engine performance and safety. A compression system in practice usually consists of upstream and downstream pipes, compressors, plenums and throttles. When a compression system encounters the surge, the flows in the compressor present complex three-dimensional patterns but the flows of other components might present relatively simple one-dimensional patterns. Based on these flow characteristics, this paper proposes a novel simulation method, where one-dimensional and three-dimensional (1D–3D) calculations are coupled, to predict the surge boundary of centrifugal compressors. To validate this method, a high-speed centrifugal compressor is studied both by the proposed 1D–3D coupled method and experimentally. The results show that the differences between the predicted and experimentally determined stable flow range are lower than 5% until the Mach number of blade outlet tip tangential velocity reaches around 1.3. Besides, this method can correctly predict the instantaneous compressor performance during the surge cycle, so it can also be used to explore the surge mechanism and evaluate the blade dynamic force response in the future.
