Abstract:Two structurally similar trans-bis(pyridine) dichloropalladium(II)- and platinum(II)-type complexes were synthesized and characterized. They both self-assemble in n-hexane to form viscous fluids at lower concentrations, but form metallogels at sufficient concentrations. The viscous solutions were studied by capillary viscosity measurements and UV/Vis absorption spectra monitored during the disassembly process indicated that a metallophilic interaction was involved in the supramolecular polymerization process. For the two supramolecular assemblies, uncommon continuous porous networks were observed by using SEM and TEM revealed that they were built from nanofibers that fused and crosslinked with the increase of concentration. The xerogels of the palladium and platinum complexes were carefully studied by using synchrotron radiation WAXD and EXAFS. The WAXD data show close stacking distances driven by π-π and metal-metal interactions and an evident dimer structure for the platinum complex was found. The coordination bond lengths were extracted from fitting of the EXAFS data. Moreover, close Pt(II) -Pt(II) (Pd(II) -Pd(II) ) and PtCl (PdCl) interactions proposed from DFT calculations in the reported oligo(phenylene ethynylene) (OPE)-based palladium(II) pyridyl supramolecular polymers were also confirmed by using EXAFS. The Pt(II) -Pt(II) interaction is more feasible for supramolecular interaction than the Pd(II) -Pd(II) interaction in our simple case.

Abstract:A platinum(II) acetylide-based bolaamphiphile equipped with two peripheral B18C6 moieties has been successfully prepared, which demonstrates cooperative recognition behavior toward L-alanine ester salt in chloroform. In a polar methanol/chloroform (3/1, v/v) medium, the amino acid additives influence the aggregation of the bolaamphiphile significantly, leading to the morphological transition from nanospherical to disordered structures. The adaptive properties of the current host-guest binary system will benefit the development of stimuli-responsive supramolecular materials.

Abstract:AbstractWe demonstrated the morphology transformation of co‐assemblies based on terpyridine‐based ligands (1R and 1S) possessing R‐ or S‐alanine analogues and their platinum(II) complex (2R‐Pt and 2S‐Pt). The right‐handed helical ribbon of the co‐assembly formed with 0.5 equivalents of 2R‐Pt to 1R was converted into the left‐handed helical ribbon with 0.6 equivalents of 2R‐Pt. The left‐handed helical ribbon structure of the co‐assembly became a tubular structure in the presence of 0.8–1.0 equivalents of 2R‐Pt. The morphology transformation via helical inversion at the supramolecular level was due to an orientation change of the amide groups caused by non‐covalent Pt⋅⋅⋅Pt interactions between the terpyridine of 2R‐Pt and that of 2R‐Pt. This study provides insights into controlling the morphology of the transformation of helical ribbons into tubular structures through helicity inversion in co‐assembled supramolecular nanostructures based on platinum(II) complexes.

Abstract:The self-assembly of π-aromatic organic and organometallic molecules into long-range-ordered supramolecular polymers is dictated by a variety of molecular parameters and external conditions. In this work, structural isomerism, representing one of the potent molecular parameters, has been investigated to modulate the self-assembly behaviors. Two platinum(II) acetylide-based structural isomers, with different N-hexyl substitution positions on the inner benzotriazole core, have been designed. Thanks to the synergistic participation of hydrogen-bonding and π-π-stacking interactions, both platinum(II) acetylide-based compounds are prone to forming supramolecular polymers via a nucleation-elongation cooperative mechanism in apolar media. Thermal hysteresis phenomena are observed for both compounds, suggesting the different supramolecular polymerization pathways upon cooling and heating. Remarkably, in addition to the spectroscopic difference, these two supramolecular polymers display distinct thermostability and rheological moduli, ascribing to different binding enthalpies of the neighboring monomers. Overall, it is evident that a minor variation at the molecular level brings huge differences to the properties of long-range-ordered supramolecular polymers. The current study illustrates the importance of the structural isomerism effect for the rational design of π-functional supramolecular materials.

Abstract:We demonstrate the formation of highly symmetric crystalline hexagonal bipyramid-shaped superstructures in the self-assembly of dinuclear Pt(II) terpyridine complexes and show that it proceeds via a nonclassical crystallization (NCC) growth mechanism, which has not been reported in the supramolecular self-assembly of metal-organic complexes previously. Instead of identifying the classical hexagonal-shaped nuclei, we observed the intermediates of nanorods and pseudo-hexagonal shapes, establishing a previously unreported growth pattern of crystallization with direct experimental evidence for the NCC mechanism, which is the first of its kind in organic/organometallic supramolecular self-assembly. In addition, the crystal structures of the hexagonal bipyramids were found to be constructed from a weaving-like trimeric motif that elongates into a 2D hexagonal network by Pt···Pt, π-π, and hydrophobic interactions. It is envisaged that the current molecular packing strategy and the discovery of this NCC pathway will provide new insights into the rational design of geometric-shaped crystalline materials via supramolecular self-assembly.

Abstract:Herein, we report four pairs of enantiomeric platinum( II ) complexes D / L -Pt-1–Pt-4 with minor structural variations that have been found to lead to distinct self-assembly behaviors and form various well-defined nanostructures. Notably, Pt-1 exhibits polymorphic self-assembly with well-defined nanostructures, such as nanorings, nanotwists, dendritic twists, and microbelts, in various conditions through the interplay of different non-covalent interactions. Importantly, two pairs of enantiomers D / L -Pt-1–Pt-2 show significantly amplified effects for circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in their corresponding nanoassemblies. Moreover, the self-assembly process can be governed by the Pt···Pt/π–π stacking, the solvophobic interactions, and electrostatic repulsion provided by the positively charged tridentate cyclometalated platinum( II ) moieties. The detailed supramolecular polymerization pathway was systematically investigated by spectroscopy, X-ray single-crystal diffraction, and electron microscopy studies.

Abstract:Metallacyclic cores provide a scaffold upon which pendant functionalities can be organized to direct the formation of dimensionally controllable nanostructures. Because of the modularity of coordination-driven self-assembly, the properties of a given supramolecular core can be readily tuned, which has a significant effect on the resulting nanostructured material. Herein we report the efficient preparation of two amphiphilic rhomboids that can subsequently order into 0D micelles, ID nanofibers, or 2D nanoribbons. This structural diversity is enforced by three parameters: the nature of the hydrophilic moieties decorating the parent rhomboids, the concentration of precursors during self-assembly, and the reaction duration. These nanoscopic constructs further interact to generate metallohydrogels at high concentrations, driven by intermolecular hydrophobic and pi-pi interactions, demonstrating the utility of coordination-driven self-assembly as a first-order structural element for the hierarchical design of functional soft materials.

Abstract:Cooperative supramolecular polymerization of π-conjugated compounds into one-dimensional nanostructures has received tremendous attentions in recent years. It is commonly achieved by incorporating amide linkages into the monomeric structures, which provide hydrogen bonds for intermolecular non-covalent complexation. Herein, the effect of amide linkages is elaborately studied, by comparing supramolecular polymerization behaviors of two structurally similar monomers with the same platinum(II) acetylide cores. As compared to the N-phenyl benzamide linkages, N-[(1S)-1-phenylethyl] benzamide linkages give rise to effective chirality transfer behaviors due to the closer distances between the chiral units and the platinum(II) acetylide core. They also provide stronger intermolecular hydrogen bonding strength, which consequently brings higher thermo-stability and enhanced gelation capability for the resulting supramolecular polymers. Supramolecular polymerization is further strengthened by varying the monomers from monotopic to ditopic structures. Hence, with the judicious modulation of structural parameters, the current study opens up new avenues for the rational design of supramolecular polymeric systems.

Abstract:Amphiphilic coil-rod-coil molecules, incorporating flexible and rigid blocks, have a strong affinity to self-organize into various supramolecular aggregates in bulk and in aqueous solutions. In this paper, we report the self-assembling behavior of amphiphilic coil-rod-coil molecular isomers. These molecules consist of biphenyl and phenyl units connected by ether bonds as the rod segment, and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with a degree of polymerization of 7 and 12 as the flexible chains. Their aggregation behavior was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, thermal optical polarized microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The results imply that the molecular structure of the rod building block and the length of the PEO chains dramatically influence the creation of supramolecular aggregates in bulk and in aqueous solutions. In the bulk state, these molecules self-organize into a hexagonal perforated lamellar and an oblique columnar structure, respectively, depending on the sequence of the rod building block. In aqueous solution, the molecule with a linear rod segment self-assembles into sheet-like nanoribbons. In contrast, its isomer, with a rod building block substituted at the meta-position of the aryl group, self-organizes into nanofibers. This is achieved through the control of the non-covalent interactions of the rod building blocks.

Abstract:Dinuclear alkynylplatinum(II) metallofoldamers with an oligomeric m-phenyleneethynylene backbone have been designed with the incorporation of a sterically undemanding, π-conjugated, and hydrophobic 2,6-bis(N-dodecylbenzimidazol-2'-yl)pyridine pincer ligand. The complex with the optimal chain length has been found to exhibit gelation behavior via stabilization by noncovalent Pt···Pt and π-π stacking interactions in the hierarchical architecture constructed from the single-turn helix. The chain lengths of the complexes have been found to be a critical determinant for their gelation behavior, conformations, and morphologies. Such a gelation process has been found to undergo a cooperative assembly mechanism according to the nucleation-elongation model. Their self-assembly via the Pt···Pt and π-π stacking interactions has been studied by H NMR, 2D ROESY NMR (ROESY = rotating-frame Overhauser spectroscopy), electronic absorption, and emission spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations have provided further insights into the folded state geometry of this class of metallofoldamers.

Abstract:Significance Molecular self-assembly provides a bottom-up platform to design supramolecular functional materials, attracting numerous interests in material sciences. The utilization of platinum(II) complexes as building blocks of supramolecular assemblies opens up the unique noncovalent Pt···Pt interaction as one of the driving forces, imparting the supramolecular materials with rich spectroscopic features. However, the exact role of Pt···Pt interactions in molecular assembly remains elusive. The current study combines experimental and computational techniques to elucidate the role of Pt···Pt interactions in the self-assembly process of a representative amphiphilic platinum(II) complex. This work demonstrates the directional role of Pt···Pt interactions in assisting the molecular assembly in an anisotropic manner, achieving the formation of ordered self-assembled structures.

Abstract:One-dimensional organic structures with well-oriented -aggregation, strong emission, and ease of processability are desirable for optoelectronic waveguiding devices. Herein, a strategy is developed to attain this objective by self-assembling platinum(II) acetylides into fluorescent supramolecular polymers via cooperative mechanism. The resulting high-molecular-weight supramolecular polymers are capable of forming electrospun microfibers with uniform geometry and smooth surface, which enable light propagation with extremely low scattering loss (0.008dBm(-1)). With the elaborate combination of bottom-up supramolecular polymerization and top-down electrospinning techniques, this work offers a novel and versatile avenue toward high-performance optical waveguiding materials.

Abstract:Platinum(II) terpyridine complexes have received tremendous attention in recent years because of their square-planar geometry and fascinating photophysics. Bottom-up self-assembly represents an intriguing approach to construct well-ordered supramolecular architectures with tunable optical and electronic properties. Until now, much effort has been devoted to the fabrication of monocomponent platinum(II) terpyridine-based assemblies. The next step is to develop multicomponent coassembled systems via the combination of platinum(II) terpyridine complexes with other π-organic and -organometallic molecules. The implementation of electron/energy transfer processes renders advanced functionality to the resulting coassemblies. For the fabrication of discrete multicomponent architectures, a feasible protocol is to construct preorganized molecular tweezers and macrocycles with the involvement of platinum(II) terpyridine complexes as the panel units. In view of their planar surface and positively charged character, such supramolecular receptors are capable of encapsulating electron-rich polyaromatic hydrocarbons and organometallic guests via donor-acceptor charge-transfer and/or metal-metal interactions. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds can be further incorporated between the molecular tweezers receptor and the polyaromatic hydrocarbon guests, giving rise to the strengthened binding affinity and sensitive stimuli-responsiveness. On this basis, multilayer donor-acceptor stacks have been obtained via the precise control over the number of pincers, which feature enhanced complexation strength and superior functionality. Moreover, platinum(II) terpyridine-based macrocycles are more suitable for guest accommodation than the corresponding molecular tweezers receptors in light of their definite size and constrained environment. Stimuli-responsive elements can be conveniently implemented into the rigid spacers of the molecular tweezers and macrocyclic receptors, facilitating the capture and release of the sandwiched guests in a highly controlled manner. On the other hand, long-range-ordered supramolecular polymers have been successfully fabricated with linear, hyperbranched, and cross-linked topologies by employing platinum(II) terpyridine-based molecular tweezers/guest recognition motifs as the non-covalent connecting unit. The degree of polymerization of the resulting donor-acceptor-type supramolecular polymers can be efficiently modulated by incorporating intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the molecular tweezers receptor and the complementary guest unit. An alternative approach toward extended multicomponent donor-acceptor assemblies is to mimic the structure of Magnus' green salt. A delicate balance of non-covalent driving forces between homo- and heterocomplexation processes and a deeper understanding of thermodynamic and kinetic behaviors play the decisive roles in the final arrangement of the coassembled structures. Overall, multicomponent coassembly of platinum(II) terpyridine complexes into well-ordered nanostructures would open up a new avenue toward functional supramolecular materials that are especially promising for sensing, optoelectronics, and catalytic applications.
Supramolecular Polymers With Tunable Topologies Via Hierarchical Coordination-Driven Self-Assembly And Hydrogen Bonding Interfaces

Abstract:A powerful strategy to obtain complex supramolecular materials is the bottom-up construction of noncovalently bound materials by hierarchical self-assembly. This assembly process involves step-wise, uniform increases to the architectural complexity of a substrate, starting from discrete precursors and growing in dimensionality through controlled reactivity to a final product. Herein, two orthogonal processes are exploited: coordination-driven self-assembly and hydrogen bonding. The former relies on the predictable formation of metal-ligand bonds wherein the directionalities of the rigid precursors used determines the structural outcome. The latter uses 2-ureido-4-pyrimidinone interfaces that are structurally robust by virtue of the quadruple hydrogen bonding that can occur between subunits. By combining these two processes into a single system, it is possible to generate hierarchical materials that preserve the attractive tunability associated with discrete supramolecular coordination complexes. For instance, the synthesis of a one-dimensional chain comprising linked metalla-rhomboids is readily adapted to a 2D cross-linked hexagonal network by simply selecting a different metal acceptor precursor as an assembly component. The specific interactions between subunits, in this case platinum(II)-pyridyl bonds and the quadruple H-bonding of ureidopyrimidinone, are unchanged, establishing a unique strategy to obtain supramolecular polymers with marked topological differences with minimal synthetic redesign. In addition, the structural rigidity imposed by the inclusion of the platinum metallacycles serves to minimize the formation of cyclic oligomers, increasing the efficacy of formation and improving the properties of the resultant materials. Furthermore, this study taps the potential of organoplatinum(II) metallacycles in materials science.

Abstract:Coordination-driven self-assembly strategy has demonstrated the efficiency and versatility to construct well-ordered supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) such as discrete metallacycles and metallacages. In recent years, it has aroused tremendous interest to build more complexed self-assembled structures via the implementation of additional non-covalent recognition motifs on the SCCs platform. In this work, we have successfully attained this objective, with the elaborate manipulation of non-interfering pyridine-Pt2+ and molecular tweezer/guest complexation in a hierarchical self-assembly manner. The resulting SCCs-based linear supramolecular polymers exhibit intriguing NIR-emissive behaviors, primarily attributed to the presence of intermolecular Pt(II)-Pt(II) metal-metal interactions in the non-covalent tweezering structure. Hence, supramolecular engineering of multiple non-covalent interactions offers a feasible avenue toward functional materials with tailored properties.

Abstract:Supramolecular copolymers with complex architectures and emergent functions constitute a class of challenging but enticing synthetic targets in polymer science. Individual building blocks can be tailored to endow a resulting supramolecular copolymer with increased structural and functional complexity. Herein, we describe the construction of a linear supramolecular copolymer comprising mechanically interlocked segments with hydrogen-bonding metallorhomboidal units. Specifically, a hierarchical supramolecular polymerization of a crown ether-based [2]rotaxane and a discrete organoplatinum(II) metallacycle driven by 2-ureido-4-pyrimidinone (UPy) quadruple hydrogen bonding provides the impetus for its formation. This system demonstrates enhanced structural complexity accessed by the unification of orthogonal noncovalent interactions: metal coordination, host-guest chemistry, and multiple hydrogen bonding interfaces.
