Abstract:Graphene is an atomically thin, two-dimensional allotrope of carbon with excellent chemical, mechanical, and electronic properties. Recent studies have revealed that using graphene or modified graphene as a catalyst support or metal-free catalyst can result in significant improvement in the catalytic activity, selectivity, reusability and tolerance due to the unique structure of graphene. This review summarized the recent progress on the pre-paration of the graphene-based catalysts and their application in traditional chemical reactions, electrochemical reactions and photochemical catalysis. The perspectives of achieving graphene-based catalysts with high catalytic performance have also been included.

Abstract:Solid acid catalysts of graphene oxide and sulfonated graphene oxide nanosheets have been prepared by using the modified Hummers and sulfonation methods. Physical characterization indicated that a number of functional groups such as -COOH, -OH, -O-, and -SO3H were introduced onto the surfaces of the as-synthesized nanosheets. The catalytic performance of the synthesized catalysts was evaluated in the hydrolysis of the glycosidic bond and Fischer esterification. The experimental results indicated that the catalytic activity of the sulfonated graphene oxide was superior to that of other solid acid catalysts with the same or higher acid strength and has also exceeded that of H2SO4 with 9.1 times of acid strength than that of the sulfonated graphene oxide. The high reactivity can be ascribed to the formation of hydrophobic cavities through the combination of graphene sheet and the oxygen-containing groups on its surface, which may facilitate the catalyst to anchor with reactants and promote the attack of protons.

Abstract:In this study, primary and tertiary amine bifunctional graphene oxide (GO-NH2-NEt2) was prepared by silylanization of graphene oxide (GO) with amine-terminal silanes. The obtained GO-NH2-NEt2 was characterized by infrared spectrum (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Systematic studies demonstrated the GO-NH2-NEt2 had excellent catalytic activities and 100% selectivity in the classic trans-beta-nitrostyrene forming reaction.

Abstract:Graphene with its two-dimensional sheet of sp(2)-hybridized carbon is a hot topic in the fields of materials and chemistry due to its unique features. Herein, we demonstrate that sulfated graphene is an efficient solid catalyst for acid-catalyzed liquid reactions. The sulfated graphene was synthesized from a facile hydrothermal sulfonation of reduced graphene oxide with fuming sulfuric acid at 180 degrees C. Combined characterizations of XRD, Raman, and AFM techniques show that G-SO3H has a sheet structure (1-4 layers). IR spectroscopy shows that G-SO3H has a S=O bond, and the XPS technique confirms the presence of an S element in G-SO3H. Acid-base titration indicates that the acidic concentration of sulfonic groups in the sulfated graphene is 1.2 mmol g(-1). TG curves shows that the decomposition temperature (268 degrees C) of the sulfonic groups on the sulfated graphene is much higher than that of conventional SO3H-functionalized ordered mesoporous carbon (237 degrees C). Catalytic tests of the esterification of acetic acid with cyclohexanol, the esterification of acetic acid with 1-butanol, the Peckmann reaction of resorcinol with ethyl acetoacetate, and the hydration of propylene oxide show that sulfated graphene is much more active than the conventional solid acid catalysts of Amberlyst 15, OMC-SO3H, SO3H-functionalized ordered mesoporous silica (SBA-15-SO3H), graphene oxide, and reduced graphene oxide, which is attributed to the fact that the sulfated graphene almost has no limitation of mass transfer due to its unique sheet structure. Very importantly, the sulfated graphene has extraordinary recyclability in these reactions, which is attributed to the stable sulfonic groups on the sulfated graphene. The advantages, including high activities and good recyclability as well as simple preparation, are potentially important for industrial applications of the sulfated graphene as an efficient heterogeneous solid acid catalyst in the future.

Abstract:A new synthesis methodology of sulfonated graphene was developed. In this process, the number of hydroxyl groups in graphene was initially increased with n-BuLi. Then, in the presence of chlorosulfonic acid, sulfonic acid groups could be covalently immobilized to hydroxyl groups under mild conditions. Sulfonated graphene as a solid catalyst was applied for the reactions between various alcohols and ethyl acetate. The experimental results indicate that sulfonated graphene can catalyze the ester-exchange reaction efficiently.

Abstract:In this study, phosphotungstic acid immobilized on amine-grafted graphene oxide (GOAP) was prepared successfully by silylanization and electrostatic interaction. The obtained GOAP was characterized by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), zeta potential measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Systematic studies demonstrated that GOAP had excellent catalytic activities and robustness in the one-pot tandem deacetalization-nitroaldol reaction. The key role of the acid/base ratio in the catalytic performance of this bifunctional catalyst was also revealed by preliminary kinetic studies. This bifunctional catalyst might find promising applications in green chemistry, as it can not only reduce costs and waste by saving separation/purification steps and solvents/reagents, but also increase the yield by avoiding the separation of intermediate products.

Abstract:Graphene oxide, a two-dimensional aromatic scaffold decorated by oxygen-containing functional groups, possesses rich chemical properties and may present a green alternative to precious metal catalysts. Graphene oxide-based carbocatalysis has recently been demonstrated for aerobic oxidative reactions. However, its widespread application is hindered by the need for high catalyst loadings. Here we report a simple chemical treatment that can create and enlarge the defects in graphene oxide and impart on it enhanced catalytic activities for the oxidative coupling of amines to imines (up to 98% yield at 5 wt% catalyst loading, under solvent-free, open-air conditions). This study examines the origin of the enhanced catalytic activity, which can be linked to the synergistic effect of carboxylic acid groups and unpaired electrons at the edge defects. The discovery of a simple chemical processing step to synthesize highly active graphene oxide allows the premise of industrial-scale carbocatalysis to be explored.

Abstract:Graphene oxide supported l-proline (GO–Proline) bifunctional catalyst was prepared by covalent bonds via a succinate spacer. Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to characterize the structure and morphology. The characterizations demonstrated l-proline molecules could be readily introduced to the graphene oxide sheets with homogeneous distributions. Systematic studies demonstrated that it was an efficient, recoverable, and recyclable catalyst in the solvent free ketene forming reaction. Effect of different solvents on its catalytic properties was also investigated.

Abstract:Strong acid ionic liquids and sulfonic group bifunctional graphene-like nanoporous carbons (GNC-SO3H-ILs) have been synthesized by treating nitrogen containing graphene-like nanoporous carbons (GNCs) with 1,3-propanesultone, ion exchanging with HSO3CF3 or H2SO4. Introducing nitrogen is important for grafting strong acid ionic liquids and sulfonic group in GNCs, which were synthesized from carbonization of a mixture of dicyandiamide or melamine and glucose. GNC-SO3H-ILs possess abundant nanopores, nanosheet structure, good dispersion and controlled acidity. By themselves, they are capable of enhancing the fast diffusion of reactants and products, while increasing the exposure degree of acidic sites in GNC-SO3H-ILs throughout various reactions. The above characteristics resulted in their much improved catalytic activity in biomass transformations such as the production of biodiesel and depolymerization of crystalline cellulose into sugars, which was even comparable to those of homogeneous ionic liquid and mineral acids.

Abstract:Metal-ligand cooperativity has emerged as an important strategy to tune the reactivity of transition-metal complexes for the catalysis and activation of small molecules. Studies of main-group compounds, however, are scarce. Here, we report the synthesis, structural characterization, and reactivity of a geometrically constrained bis(silylene)-stabilized borylene. The one-pot reaction of [(SiNSi)Li(OEt2)] (SiNSi = 4,5-bis(silylene)-2,7,9,9-tetramethyl-9H-acridin-10-ide) with 1 equiv of [BBr3(SMe2)] in toluene at room temperature followed by reduction with 2 equiv of potassium graphite (KC8) leads to borylene [(SiNSi)B] (1), isolated as blue crystals in 45% yield. X-ray crystallography shows that borylene (1) has a tricoordinate boron center with a distorted T-shaped geometry. Computational studies reveal that the HOMO of 1 represents the lone pair orbital on the boron center and is delocalized over the Si-B-Si unit, while the geometric perturbation significantly increases its energy. Borylene (1) shows single electron transfer reactivity toward tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (B(C6F5)3), forming a frustrated radical pair [(SiNSi)B]•+[B(C6F5)3]•-, which can be trapped by its reaction with PhSSPh, affording an ion pair [(SiNSi)BSPh][PhSB(C6F5)3] (3). Remarkably, the cooperation between borylene and silylene allows the facile cleavage of the N-H bond of aniline, the P-P bond in white phosphorus, and the C═O bond in ketones and carbon dioxide, thus representing a new type of main-group element-ligand cooperativity for the activation of small molecules. In addition, 1 is a strikingly effective catalyst for carbon dioxide reduction. Computational studies reveal that the cooperation between borylene and silylene plays a key role in the catalytic chemical bond activation process.

Abstract:An efficient and convenient method is applied to introduce varieties of simple functionalities onto the graphene surface for the bulk preparation, which begins with pristine graphite that does not require initial oxidative damage of the graphene basal planes. Diazonium compounds functionalized reaction is demonstrated and it successfully prevented the aggregation of graphene for which providing solubility in high polar organic media or even in volatile solvents such as ethanol and acetone. This approach is complemented by the phenyl carboxylic diazonium salt functionalized graphene (PCFG) attachment of a symmetrically substituted zinc phthalocyanine (PCFG-Pc) using the amide reaction, which is used for the covalent introduction of a complex phthalocyanine molecule. Abstract:Covalent hybrids of graphene and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) hold immense potential in various technologies, particularly catalysis and energy applications, due to the advantageous combination of conductivity and porosity. The formation of an amide bond between carboxylate-functionalized graphene acid (GA) and amine-functionalized UiO-66-NH2 MOF (Zr6O4(OH)4(NH2-bdc)6, with NH2-bdc2– = 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and UiO = Universitetet i Oslo) is a highly efficient strategy for creating such covalent hybrids. Previous experimental studies have demonstrated exceptional properties of these conductive networks, including significant surface area and functionalized hierarchical pores, showing promise as a chemiresistive CO2 sensor and electrode materials for asymmetric supercapacitors. However, the molecular-level origin of the covalent linkages between pristine MOF and GA layers remains unclear. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to elucidate the mechanism of amide bond formation between GA and UiO-66-NH2. The theoretical calculations emphasize the crucial role of zirconium within UiO-66, which acts as a catalyst in the reaction cycle. Both commonly observed hexa-coordinated and less common hepta-coordinated zirconium complexes are considered as intermediates. By gaining detailed insights into the binding interactions between graphene derivatives and MOFs, strategies for tailored syntheses of such nanocomposite materials can be developed.

Bifunctional Acid–Base Cooperativity in Heterogeneous Catalytic Reactions: Advances in Silica Supported Organic Functional Groups

Abstract:Emulating nature is a powerful way to realize selective catalytic reactions and to develop structurally complex organic molecules. A well understood fact in biochemistry is that enzymes are capable of accelerating reactions through cooperative interactions between accurately positioned functional groups present in their active sites. Substrate recognition and activation may proceed through electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, or covalent interactions. Following the concept of ‘site isolation’, significant progress has recently been achieved in the immobilization of mutually destructive catalysts for multistep cascade reactions. ‘Site isolation’ or ‘compartmentalization’ is thus considered as one of the paradigms in heterogeneous catalysis especially in the separation of mutually incompatible catalysts, such as acids and bases. This concept, adopted from nature and through which incompatible sites are spatially separated, aids in avoiding undesired interactions. Thereby tedious work up procedures and purification can be greatly minimized. Cascade reactions—defined as two or more reactions occurring in one reactor—are an emerging strategy in modern synthetic chemistry, as a) several bonds can be formed in a single reaction step in the same reaction vessel without isolation of intermediates, b) they allow a rapid and efficient synthesis of complex molecules from simple starting materials, and c) the overall process is ‘green’ in terms of waste and cost reduction. However, it is not trivial for material chemists to try to mimic biological catalysts by fixing antagonist groups in solid supports for various onestep cooperative catalytic reactions. In a classical concept, a support material serves to handle and recover the catalyst, whereas recent systematic investigations suggest that surfaces will often act cooperatively to stabilize specific catalyst structures. Thus during the last years researchers focused their efforts to precisely position bior multifunctional groups on solid supports for cooperative catalytic reactions. Beyond doubt, this concept of multifunctional heterogeneous or heterogenized catalysts is one way to economic and ecologically benign processes. In this context, organic–inorganic hybrid materials have shown their applicability in a broad variety of heterogeneous catalytic reactions. They show high mechanical, thermal, and chemical stability provided by the inorganic components, while the organic compartments can be independently selected and optimized for specific catalytic applications. Organic modifications of structured inorganic solids, for example mesoporous materials, can be performed by three different ways: by the grafting method, by the co-condensation method, and by the formation of an organosilica material (Scheme 1). By employing one of these methods a series of monoor bifunctional organic groups can be successfully fixed inside the channels of silica supports. Abstract:Catalytic cycloaddition of CO 2 is a practical strategy to synthesize cyclic carbonate and is also a sustainable route to utilize CO 2 . Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) is a typical solid base but showed limited activity in catalytic cycloaddition of CO 2 due to its lack of acidic sites. Herein, acid–base bifunctional g-C 3 N 4 materials were synthesized. The incorporation of Zr and Al cations into g-C 3 N 4 induced the formation of acidic sites and meanwhile enhanced the basic strength. The characterization results revealed that metal cations might coordinate with nitrogen atoms of g-C 3 N 4 . As heterogeneous catalysts, the synthesized Zr x Al y O/g-C 3 N 4 materials showed superior catalytic activity to ZrO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 in the cycloaddition of CO 2 with propylene oxide. Under optimal reaction conditions, the maximum yield of propylene carbonate reached 90%, and the catalysts were able to be recycled at least five times without any loss in catalytic activity.

Abstract:Rational design and tailoring of the structural features of Co—N—C catalysts are urgently required to construct highly efficient bifunctional non-noble metal electrocatalysts for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we report a series of carbon-based catalysts with varied structural features, specifically the graphitic degree of carbon, porosity, and the configuration of active sites, and their effects on bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic reactions. Through the synergistic tuning of these structural factors, the well-tailored Co—N—C catalyst exhibits a high bifunctional electrocatalytic activity, as revealed by a half-wave potential of 0.84 V for ORR and a low overpotential of 420 mV at 10 mA·cm−2 for OER. More impressively, the Zn-air battery using the optimum catalyst delivers excellent performance including a peak power density of 125.2 mW·cm−2 and a specific capacity of 790.8 mAh·gZn−1, as well as stable cycling durability, outperforming the noble metals-based catalysts. The first-principles calculations reveal that the interlayer interaction between the pyridinic N-doped graphene and the confined Co nanoparticles increases the electronic states of the active C atoms near the Fermi level, thus enhancing the adsorption of the HOO* intermediate and generating superior catalytic activity for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis. By comprehensively studying the structural factors of catalysts, the bifunctional catalytic behaviors, the use in a practical Zn-air device, and theoretical simulations, this work may also give inspirations to the design, use, and understanding of other kinds of catalysts.

Abstract:The commercial mass production of bifunctional oxygen catalysts with high activity and stability is critical for constructing high-performance lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries, but remains challenging. Herein, we describe a protocol for the scalable fabrication of a 2D bifunctional electrocatalyst of Pt/RuO2/graphene by spatial confinement strategy and elaborately evaluate its oxygen reduction/evolution reactions for advanced Li-O2 batteries. We then detail the synthesis steps for preparing materials followed by assembly and evaluation of the three-electrode systems and coin-type Li-O2 batteries.
