Abstract:This study employed 1-Hexyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide to mitigate the corrosion of Q235 steel in a hydrochloric acid environment. The evaluation of corrosion inhibition effectiveness was comprehensively characterized by combining electrochemical experiments with surface morphology observation. The experimental results demonstrated the capability of the ionic liquid in establishing a film layer on the surface of Q235 steel, which effectively hindered the charge transfer process. Notably, the corrosion inhibition efficiency attained a value of 92.3% at a concentration of 1mM corrosion inhibitor. Moreover, the process of the corrosion inhibitor adhering to the steel surface aligns with the Langmuir isotherm, demonstrating physicochemical adsorption behavior. The density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation were utilized for further exploration of the corrosion inhibition mechanism, and the results indicate the ionic liquid can be adsorbed onto the (110) surface of Fe in parallel through N atoms on the imidazole ring.

Abstract:The corrosion inhibition of A3 steel by an imidazoline derivative in 2%NaCl solution (pH 4.0-6.9) was investigated using weight loss method, potentiodynamic polarisation, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations. It is suggested that the imidazoline derivative acts as an anodic type inhibitor, suppressing the charge transfer process by adsorption on the steel surface. The inhibition efficiency (IE) at pH 4.9 increases with the imidazoline derivative concentration in the range of 50-250 mg L-1. Meanwhile, the IE for A3 steel in neutral solution is better than that in acidic solution. During a long time immersion, the IE increases first with the increasing immersion time. Although it decreases a little with further time extension, good inhibition performances are observed.

Abstract:Weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization spectroscopy (Tafel), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to examine the effects of two α-aminophosphonic acids, namely (phenyl-phosphonomethyl-amino)-methyl) phosphonic acid (PHAP) and (propyl-phosphonomethyl-amino)-methyl) phosphonic acid (PRAP), on the surface of carbon steel. At 10 −3 M, PHAP and PRAP had maximum efficiencies of 81.58 and 70.21%, respectively. The topographies of the uninhibited and inhibited surfaces were measured using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Langmuir adsorption isotherm was followed by the inhibitors' adsorption on the carbon steel surface, and the kinetic parameters (K ads , ΔG° ads , ΔH° ads , and ΔS° ads ) were determined for temperatures between 25 and 55°C. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to compute the quantum chemical parameters using the (B3LYP) method and the 6-31G (p, d) basis set. Utilizing molecular dynamics simulations (MDS), the interfacial arrangement of the produced chemicals and Fe(110)/H 2 O was identified. These theoretical discoveries strongly support the results of experiments.

Abstract:α-aminophosphonate (α-AP) is used as a novel corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel. The aggressive media applied in this study are HCl and H2SO4 acid solutions. The findings indicate that the morphology of the α-AP compound is cubic, with particles ranging in size from 17 to 23 μm. FT-IR, 1HNMR, 31PNMR, and 13CNMR analysis confirmed the synthesis of the α-AP molecule. It has been discovered that the compound α-AP plays an important role in inhibiting the corrosion of carbon steel in both HCl and H2SO4 acids. This was identifiably inferred from the fact that the addition of α-AP compound decreased the corrosion rate. It is important to report that the maximum inhibition efficiency (92.4% for HCl and 95.7% for H2SO4) was obtained at 180 ppm. The primary factor affecting the rate at which steel specimens corrode in acidic electrolytes is the tendency of α-AP compounds to adsorb on the surface of steel through their heteroatoms (O, N, and P). This was verified by SEM/EDX results. The adsorption actually occurs through physical and chemical mechanisms via different active centers which are matched with the calculated quantum parameters. In addition, the adsorption of α-AP follows the Langmuir isotherm.

Abstract:An examination was conducted on a newly developed compound named N1-(coumarin-7-yl) amidrazone (Azo-Cum) to assess its impact on the corrosion of mild steel (MS) in a 1 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution. Various analytical techniques, including weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), UV–visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and AFM, were employed to evaluate the inhibitory efficiency of the compound. The findings indicated that inhibition efficiency rose with higher concentrations but decreased with elevated temperatures. According to weight loss analysis, the optimal concentration of the new eco-friendly inhibitor (5 ×10 −4 M) exhibited a maximum efficiency of 89.26%. Polarization studies disclosed that Azo-Cum acted as a mixed-type inhibitor with a cathodic predominance. The adsorption of the inhibitor on the MS surface followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Additionally, the study explored the synergistic effect of Azo-Cum in combination with KI on MS corrosion in a 1 M HCl (Blank) solution using potentiodynamic polarization measurements. The results identified concentration ranges that demonstrated antagonistic inhibition. Density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamic simulation (MD) calculations were performed to investigate the correlation between molecular and chemical reactivity.

Abstract:Q235 carbon steel is a commonly used engineering material, but its application in marine environments is limited by its susceptibility to corrosion, especially localized corrosion that can lead to material perforation. Effective inhibitors are crucial to addressing this issue, particularly in acidic environments where localized areas become increasingly acidic. This study reports the synthesis of a new imidazole derivative corrosion inhibitor and evaluates its effectiveness in corrosion inhibition performance using potentiodynamic polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. High-resolution optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were employed for surface morphology analysis. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to explore the protection mechanisms. The results demonstrate that the self-synthesized imidazole derivative corrosion inhibitor offers an excellent corrosion protection performance for Q235 carbon steel in a 3.5 wt. % NaCl acidic solution. This inhibitor can provide a new strategy for carbon steel corrosion protection.

Abstract:The suitability of the two synthesized hydrazones namely N''-[(4-aminocoumarin-3-yl)methylidene]thiocarbonohydrazide ( AMT ), and 2-[(4-Aminocoumarin-3-yl)methylidene]hydrazinecarbodithioic acid ( AMH ) as corrosion inhibitors for N80 carbon steel (N80 CS) metal in acidic hydrochloric solution has been investigated at different concentrations of inhibitors (10 –7 to 10 –3 M) and different temperatures (298–328 K). The Inhibition efficiency was examined by gravimetric measurements, electrochemical methods supplemented with AFM, SEM-EDX, contact angle measurement, and XRD. The compounds have been characterized using IR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and mass spectra. It was found that AMT and AMH exhibit maximum inhibition efficiency of 90.52 and 93.28%, respectively, at 10 −3 M against N80 CS corrosion in 1.0 M HCl solutions. The adsorption of inhibitors on the N80 CS surface tends to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Potentiodynamic polarization results revealed that AMT and AMH functioned as mixed-type inhibitors. All thermodynamic parameters were estimated and discussed. The combination of density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamic simulations was used to understand the sites in the AMT and AMH molecules where interaction with the N80 CS surface can occur. Results of the biological test revealed the excellent bioactivity of the AMT and AMH compounds, suggesting AMT and AMH are environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors.

Abstract:Dibenzo [1,4,8,11] tetraaza [14] annulene nickel (TAA-Ni) has been synthesized and its inhibitive behavior on mild steel in 1M HCl was firstly investigated by gravimetric, potentiodynamic and impedance method. The potentiodynamic curves indicate the TAA-Ni mainly acted as mixed type inhibitor on electrochemistry in acid media. The weight loss result indicates TAA-Ni is good inhibitor in acid solution with the temperature changing from 303K to 333K. The XPS experiment indicates the protonation of TAA-Ni and its chemical adsorption on steel surface.

Abstract:The corrosion phenomenon and its economic impacts can hardly be ignored in any application. This study synthesized a quaternary ammonium salt (3) containing hydrophobic dodecyl and electron-rich diallylbenzyl amine moieties to be used in 15 % HCl as a corrosion inhibitor of mild steel. Several techniques, such as 1H and 13C NMR, IR, TGA, and elemental analysis, have been used to characterize inhibitor 3. Popular corrosion measurement techniques, namely weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization techniques, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, have been used to determine the efficiency of inhibitor 3. At 303 K and a moderately low concentration of 50 ppm, the quaternary ammonium salt-based inhibitor demonstrated a maximum efficiency of ≈95.0 %. At elevated temperatures of 313, 323, and 333 K, the inhibition efficacy values were recorded as 91.3, 82.8, and 75.0 %, respectively. Adsorption isotherm study revealed that the adsorption of inhibitor 3 followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The value of Δ G a d s ° was found to be - 40.19 kJ mol-1, indicating that inhibitor 3 became adsorbed via a mixed physi-chemisorption mechanism. A very high adsorption constant ( K a d s ) of 1.53 × 105 L mol-1 suggested strong adsorption of inhibitor 3. The difference in activation energy ( E a ) value of 42.4 kJ mol-1 between the control and the inhibited solution indicated an efficient adsorption of inhibitor 3. The ability of inhibitor 3 to retard both anodic and cathodic half-cell reactions was proved via open circuit potential and Tafel curves studies. Detailed discussions on the change in corrosion current densities ( i c o r r ), polarization ( R p ) and charge transfer ( R c t ) resistances have been offered to discuss the inhibition efficiency. Water contact angle measurement showed a drastic increase in mild steel surface hydrophobicity following inhibitor 3 adsorption. SEM-EDX and XPS studies confirmed the definitive presence of inhibitor 3 on the mild steel surface. Density functional theory (DFT) studies revealed the frontier molecular orbitals with which the metal surface interacts. A detailed corrosion inhibition mechanism has been offered in the context of adsorption isotherm and DFT studies.

Abstract:The inhibition performance and mechanism of nicotinic acid (NA), nicotinic acid amide (NAA) and 4-methoxypyridine (MP) for the corrosion of mild steel in 0.5 M HCl solution were investigated and compared by means of experimental tests, including potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, surface analyses and quantum chemistry calculation. The electrochemical results show that the inhibition efficiencies of the three inhibitors increase with the concentration and decrease with the temperature. The NAA and MP inhibitors exhibit the highest and lowest efficiency and activation energy for the corrosion process, respectively, which is confirmed by the corrosion morphology observation. Fourier transform infrared analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirm the spontaneous adsorption of all three inhibitors on the surface. The adsorption analysis demonstrates that the adsorption process follows Langmuir model and consists of both physisorption and chemisorption. The quantum chemistry calculation correlates the molecular structures and charge density distributions with the corrosion inhibition efficiencies of NAA, NA and MP inhibitors, and further proves that the good inhibition performance of NAA inhibitor originates its high adsorption ability.

Abstract:Herein, we reported to use a hydroxyl-terminated poly(amine-ester) hyperbranched polymer (HPAE-OHs) as a green, effective and economic corrosion inhibitor for mild steel (Q235) in 1 M HCl solution. HPAE-OHs is a third generation hyperbranched polymer which can be synthesized through a simple “one-pot” solvent-free esterification. Weight-loss tests show that the presence of HPAE-OHs can inhibit the corrosion of Q235 and the corrosion inhibition efficiency (η (%)) can reach 94.9% at the dosage of 100 mg L−1 for 24 h. The study of the adsorption thermodynamic indicates that the adsorption of HPAE-OHs on the surface of Q235 steel follows Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Polarization measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) suggest that HPAE-OHs works as a mixed-type inhibitor, which forms a layer of protective film on the metal surface to prevent metal corrosion. Moreover, theoretic studies further indicate that the corrosion inhibition is the result of the strong adsorption of HPAE-OHs inhibitor on Q235 steel surface. All these results clearly show that the synthesized hyperbranched polymer HPAE-OHs is an efficient corrosion inhibitor for steel and has a great application potential in industrial metal anticorrosion.

Abstract:The inhibition of mild steel corrosion in 0.5 M H2SO4 by simple amines (cyclohexylamine, pyridine, triethylamine) was investigated by dc polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results indicate a strong dependence of the inhibition performance on the nature of the metal surface, in addition to the structural effects of amines. Inhibition is accomplished by amine adsorption on the metal surface without detectable changes in the chemistry of corrosion. Adsorption is predominantly chemisorptive in the active region and by hydrogen bond formation in the passive region. Amine molecules with delocalized π electrons or high electron densities at their nitrogen atoms are effective inhibitors in the active region. The effectiveness for corrosion control in the passive region, however, is proportional to the number of NH linkages in the amine molecules.

Abstract:In this study, we present the performance as an inhibitor of plant extract of Aerva lanata flowers (ALF) used as an environmentally benign compound for protection of corrosion of low-carbon steel in 1.0 mol L−1 HCl solution. The investigation was accomplished using conventional mass loss, electrochemical measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The investigation of weight loss demonstrated that the inhibition performance had been improved via raising the concentration of the inhibitor. The efficiency of inhibition has been found to exceed 88% at 600 ppm of the ALF formulation. Using anodic polarization curves, it was demonstrated that flower extract of Aerva lanata acted as a mixed-type inhibitor. The green inhibitor compounds covered the steel surface following Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The surface morphology analysis was conducted to validate the results.

Abstract:In this work, N-[2-(3-indolyl)ethyl]-cinnamamide (IA) synthesized from tryptamine (TA) and cinnamic acid was evaluated as green corrosion inhibitor for Q235 steel in 0.5 M HCl solution by weight loss tests, potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Gravimetric measurements displayed the maximum inhibition efficiencies of TA and IA at 1.0 mM were up to 92.8% and 97.6%, respectively. PDP and EIS studies revealed they could hinder both hydrogen evolution and metal dissolution reactions and that the inhibiting effect was temperature and concentration dependent. The surface analysis of sample was presented through scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) and atomic force microscope (AFM), which indicated the anti-corrosion ability of Q235 steel in hydrochloric acid was enhanced by the inhibitor. The adsorptive behavior of inhibitors including physisorption and chemisorption obeyed Langmuir isotherm. The inhibition mechanism was elucidated by determining the potential of zero charge (Epzc) at solid/liquid interface. Quantum chemistry calculation provided a theoretical estimate of the reactivities of TA and IA as corrosion inhibitors to ascertain the correlation between the inhibition efficiency and molecular structures. Results of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations confirm that IA shows better inhibitive performance due to higher interaction energy (– 79.1 kJ mol−1 for TA and – 144.16 kJ mol−1 for IA).

Abstract:Purpose - The paper reports an investigation into the use of aqueous extracts of rice bran as a green inhibitor for corrosion of carbon steel in hydrochloric acid (HCI) solution. Design/methodology/approach - Extracts from the rice bran were used as the main component of an environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor for use in HCI pickling processes. Inhibition behavior on carbon steel in HCI was investigated by means of mass-loss tests, polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. Findings - The results show that the extract exhibited good inhibition performance in 1 M HCI. The inhibition efficiency increased with increase in the concentration of the inhibitor and was only moderately affected by temperature variations in the range 303-363 K. The inhibitive action was due to adsorption on the A3 steel and the adsorption process was consistent with the Langmuir isotherm. The free energy of adsorption (Delta G(ads.)) was -4.192 kJ/mol. The negative value of Delta G(ads). indicated spontaneous adsorption of the inhibitor occurred on the surface of A3 steel. Practical implications - Rice bran extract is an effective inhibitor and can be used to protect carbon steel from corrosion in HCI solution. Originality/value - The rice bran extracts are an effective green inhibitor and can be widely used in the pickling of metals.
Concise Cu I -Catalyzed Azide–Alkyne 1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition Reaction Ligation Remarkably Enhances the Corrosion Inhibitive Potency of Natural Amino Acids for Mild Steel in HCl

Abstract:Despite natural amino acids having been proposed as the green surrogate of currently used corrosion inhibitors that are generally toxic to both nature and human body during the everyday industrial processing of metallic equipments, their structural simplicity yet lowers the inhibitive potency, thereby hampering their further industrialization. We disclose here that a concise chemical ligation (Cu-I-catalyzed azide-alkyne 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction [Cue-AAC]) between two L-amino acids that are weak or noncorrosion inhibitors may result in their largely improved protective effect for mild steel in HCl. A series of 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazolyl bis-amino acid derivatives constituted by L-serine, L-threonine, L-phenylalanine, and L-tyrosine were efficiently synthesized via Cue-AAC and deprotection reactions in high yields. Subsequently performed electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) evidenced that the inhibitive effect of these compounds for mild steel in 1 M HCl is markedly better than that of their natural amino acid counterparts. The inhibitive modality of the most potent inhibitor was interpreted in detail by potentiodynamic polarization and thermodynamic calculations. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations suggest that the triazole ring formed by the Cue-AAC has contribution to their metal surface adsorption. This study would offer unique insights into the facile development of potency-enhanced green corrosion inhibitors based on the concise Cue-AAC ligation of natural amino acids.
Anticorrosion Effect of Ethoxylate Sulfanilamide Compounds on Carbon Steel in 1 M Hydrochloric Acid: Electrochemical and Theoretical Studies

Abstract:Metal corrosion is an important economic problem globally. One of the best ways to protect metal surfaces from corrosion is by the use of corrosion inhibitors, especially surfactants. This study assesses anticorrosion properties of three inhibitor compounds (S1, S2, and S3) of ethoxylate sulfanilamide containing 2, 10, and 20 units of ethylene oxide on carbon steel in 1 M HCl solution. The anticorrosive performance of S1, S2, and S3 was studied using potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), adsorption isotherm, surface tests (scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis), and computational studies (density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations) within the concentration range of 10–6 to 10–2 M at 30 ± 2 °C. The results of the methods used indicate that increasing the concentration of the inhibitor compounds improves the effectiveness of inhibition (from 50.9 to 98%), whereas the inhibition efficiency order for ethoxylated sulfanilamide compounds is S2 > S3 > S1 with the highest inhibiting efficiency, respectively, of 98.0, 95.0, and 90.0% for 10–2 M. Also, PDP indicated that S1, S2, and S3 inhibitors act as mixed-type inhibitors and their adsorption obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Surface tests show that the studied compounds can significantly inhibit acid attack via chemical adsorption on the metal. Furthermore, all of the chemical descriptors derived from DFT indicate that the three inhibitors are quite well adsorbed by the adhesion centers on the CS surface. The three compounds' molecular geometries and electronic structures were calculated using quantum chemical calculations. Using theoretical computations, the energy difference between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest occupied molecular orbital has been determined to represent chemical reactivity and kinetic stability of a composition.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Fatty acid molecules 9,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid (C18:3), 9,12-octadecadienoic acid (C18:2), and hexadecanoic acid (C16:0) possessing active functional groups with the capability of fast electron transfer have been established for effective corrosion inhibition of mild steel. In this regard, a microalga Scenedesmus sp. is isolated and its fatty acids have been studied to corroborate the adsorption behavior, attributing the anticorrosion efficacy on mild steel in 1 M HCl solution by forming metal-inhibitor framework. Electrochemical analysis has been used to ascertain the surpassing corrosion inhibition efficiency at an optimal concentration of 36 ppm with maximum 95.1% inhibitive performance. The results of metallography with or without the inhibitor molecules have indicated significant changes in surface morphology of mild steel specimen for gradual enhancement in immersion time (72 h). Hydrogen evolution reaction has been emphasized to observe the tendency of significant decrease in the bubble formation in the presence of inhibitor compared to 1 M HCl solution only. Surface morphometric studies (scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy) have also revealed the excellent adsorption capacity of Scenedesmus fatty acids on metal surface. Quantum chemical calculations, performed by density functional theory, determined significant adsorption effectiveness, based on the donor-acceptor capability between metallic surface and inhibitor molecules.

Abstract:Corrosion inhibition using bolaamphiphile surfactants is related to the ability of these compounds to adsorb on liquid–solid interface. In this work, we have synthesized the 1,10-bis(4-amino-3-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-5-thioyl)decane (DTC10) using a new method developed in our laboratory. The synthesized compounds have been purified and characterized by NMR1H and NMR13C spectroscopy. The inhibiting action of DTC10 toward the corrosion of carbon steel in HCl1M solution was investigated using potentiodynamic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. We have shown that this compound acts as very good inhibitor for carbon steel in 1M HCl. The values of the transfer resistance, obtained from impedance plots of carbon steel, increase by increasing inhibitor concentration and reach 92% for 10−3M of DTC10. The effects of temperature and immersion time on the inhibition efficiency have also been studied. The effect of temperature was studied between 298 and 328 K; the activation energy Ea and other thermodynamic parameters were calculated. Donating and anti-donating properties of the studied inhibitor 1,10-bis(4-amino-3-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-5-thioyl)decane (DTC10) were illustrated using nucleophilic P− and electrophilic P+ Parr functions based on the density functional theory (DFT). The computational Monte Carlo (MC) method was performed to study the adsorption behavior of DTC10 onto Fe(111) surface in the solution (presence of H3O+, Cl− and H2O particles) and in the vacuum (absence of H3O+, Cl− and H2O particles). Accordingly, the adsorption of DTC10 on the iron surface (111) is more preferred in the solution than in the vacuum.
