Abstract:Stable aqueous dispersions of silver nanoparticles have been synthesized from an organometallic precursor dissolved in an organic phase. Hydrogen gas is used to reduce the precursor to form silver nanoparticles which spontaneously transfer into an immiscible aqueous phase where they are stabilized. This route provides a simple pathway for the preparation of aqueous nanoparticle solutions and avoids production of the inorganic ions that are usually associated with aqueous methods. The effectiveness of a variety of aqueous stabilizing agents is evaluated. All products show plasmon absorption bands characteristic of silver nanoparticles and transmission electron microscopy reveals most particles to be below 40 nm in diameter. Abstract:A method for the direct one-pot synthesis of amine-stabilized gold nanoparticles using 3-(trimethoxysilylpropyl)diethylenetriamine (TMSP dien) is described. The amine groups of this bifunctional molecule act as a stabilizer for gold nanoparticles as they form by reduction of HAuCl4. Highly stable gold nanoparticles with sizes tunable between 8 and 20 nm can be readily obtained. This method is quite simple to implement and environmentally benign as there is no need to add an external reducing reagent. The incorporated siloxy functionality was subsequently used to form a silica shell around the gold particle.

Abstract:Nanoparticles that self-assemble on a liquid-liquid interface serve as the building block for making heterodimeric nanostructures. Specifically, hollow iron oxide nanoparticles within hexane form colloidosomes in the aqueous solution of silver nitrate, and iron oxide exposed to the aqueous phase catalyzes the reduction of silver ions to afford a heterodimer of silver and hollow iron oxide nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, and SQUID were used to characterize the heterodimers. Interestingly, the formation of silver nanoparticles helps the removal of spinglass layer on the hollow iron oxide nanoparticles. This work demonstrates a powerful yet convenient strategy for producing sophisticated, multifunctional nanostructures.

Light-mediated biosynthesis of size-tuned silver nanoparticles using Saccharomyces cerevisiae extract

Abstract:Bio-based production of silver nanoparticles represents a sustainable alternative to commercially applied physicochemical manufacturing approaches and provides qualitatively highly valuable nanomaterials due to their narrow size dispersity, high stability and biocompatibility with broad application potentials. The intrinsic features of nanoparticles depend on size and shape, whereby the controlled synthesis is a challenging necessity. In the present study, the biosynthesis of size-tuned silver nanoparticles based on cell-free extracts of Saccharomyces cerevisiae DSM 1333 was investigated. Single parameter optimization strategies in phases of cultivation, extraction, and synthesis were performed to modify the nanoparticle scale and yield. Visible light was exploited as a tool in nanoparticle production. The influence of white light on the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles was determined by using novel LED systems with the exposition of varying irradiation intensities and simultaneous performance of control experiments in the dark. Characterization of the resulting nanomaterials by spectrophotometric analysis, dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, revealed spherical silver nanoparticles with controlled, light-mediated size shifts in markedly increased quantities. Matching of irradiated and non-irradiated reaction mixtures mirrored the enormous functionality of photon input and the high sensitivity of the biosynthesis process. The silver nanoparticle yields increased by more than 90% with irradiation at 1.0 ± 0.2 mW cm - 2 and the reduction of particle dimensions was achieved with significant shifts of size-specific absorption maxima from 440 to 410 nm, corresponding to particle sizes of 130 nm and 100 nm, respectively. White light emerged as an excellent tool for nano-manufacturing with advantageous effects for modulating unique particle properties.

Abstract:This study presents an innovative light-triggered synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) utilizing UV radiation (λ = 254 nm), thiols (non-toxic mercaptosuccinic acid, MSA), and metal ions (Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ , Se 4+ ). Efficient formation of various nanoparticles is achieved by exposing a precursor blend of metal ions and thiols (MSA) to ultraviolet light in compact volumes, like UV-transparent 96-well plates (50 – 300 μL per well) or plastic tubes (1.5 – 50 mL). This process effectively produces different types of nanoparticles, including fluorescent zinc-cadmium quantum dots (ZnCd QDs), non-fluorescent copper nanoparticles (CuNPs), and selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs). The scalability of the method allows for easy upscaling using larger test tubes or downsizing by depositing precursors (10 – 100 μL) on a paper matrix, where UV treatment not only induces NP formation in solution but also facilitates their anchoring to the paper surface. The developed one-pot in situ approach offers a cost-effective, user-friendly, and energy-efficient method for NP production and chemical engineering on paper surfaces. The technique is promising for a wide range of applications, such as interferometric measurement using ZnCd QDs, bactericidal effects of CuNPs against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 100 = 0.14 mg/mL), and visible light switchable (ON/OFF) nanozymatic reactors employing SeNPs. We suggest light-triggered chemistry based on thiols and metal ions for effective "soft" synthesis of various nanoparticles and NPs-based devices.

Abstract:Synthesis of monodisperse small Au nanoparticles in a controllable manner is of great importance for fundamental science and technical applications. Here, we report a "precursor continuous-supply" strategy for controllable synthesis of 0.9-3.3 nm Au nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution of 0.1-0.2 nm, using a weak reductant to slow-down the reducing rate of AuClPPh(3) precursor in ethanol. Time-dependent X-ray absorption and UV-Vis absorption measurements revealed that owing to the joint use of AuClPPh(3) and ethanol, the remnant AuClPPh(3) was self-supplied and the precursor concentration was maintained at a level near to its equilibrium solubility (ca. 1.65 mmol L(-1)) in ethanol. Hence the nucleation duration was extended that focused the initial size distribution of the Au clusters. With reaction going on for 58 min, most of AuClPPh(3) with a nominal Au concentration of 17.86 mmol L(-1) was converted to ethanol-soluble Au clusters with a size of about 1.0 nm, resulting in a high-yield synthesis.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles were synthesized in a one-step process at the air-AgNO(3) aqueous solution interface under Langmuir monolayers of 5,10,15,20-tetra-4-oxy(2-stearic acid) phenyl porphyrin (TSPP) at room temperature by using different methods including UV-light irradiation, ambient light irradiation, and formaldehyde gas reduction. It was found that parallel aligned one-dimensional (1D) chains composed of discrete silver nanoparticles with the size of 3-5 nm were formed under UV-light irradiation for a short time, while large areas of uniform silver spherical nanoparticles were formed under natural daylight illumination for several days or by formaldehyde gas treatment for several hours. The average size of the spherical nanoparticles ranges from 6.88 ± 0.46 to 11.10 ± 1.47 nm, depending on the experimental conditions. The 1D chains formed under UV-light irradiation result from the templating effect of parallel aligned linear supramolecular arrays formed by TSPP at the air-water interface, and rapid nucleation and growth of the nanoparticles. The formation of the uniform silver nanoparticles under daylight illumination or by formaldehyde gas treatment, however, should be ascribed to a kinetically controlled growth process of the nanoparticles.

Abstract:A facile and novel way was reported for the preparation of nearly monodisperse silver nanoparticles with controlled hydrophilic or hydrophobic surface, using trioctylphosphine as the surfactant and stabilizer. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and UV–vis spectroscopy. The monodisperse silver nanoparticles showed a strong surface plasmon resonance band at 402nm from the UV–vis spectrum.

Abstract:Photoinduced shape conversion of silver nanoparticles was realized using sunlight. The silver seeds were transformed to silver nanoprisms under sunlight when the concentration of citrate was low (⩽5.0×10−4M). Nevertheless, sunlight converted the obtained silver nanoprisms to silver nanodecahedrons when the concentration of citrate in reaction system was increased. It was found that the ultraviolet light from sunlight played a vital role in the shape conversion from nanoprism to nanodecahedron. Lighting power density did not influence the shape conversion except for reaction rate. Besides, the silver nanodecahedrons were synthesized in the mixed solution of AgNO3 and citrate in absence of silver seeds through irradiation by simulated sunlight. The mechanism on the sunlight induced synthesis of silver nanoparticles was discussed. Anisotropic silver nanoparticles including nanoprisms and nanodecahedrons were obtained through controlling the citrate concentration and irradiation time by sunlight from green light source.

Abstract:The development of energy efficient, reproducible, and high throughput approaches to gold nanoparticle (Au-NP) synthesis has gained increasing attention over the past decades due to applications in biomedicine, sensors, and catalysis. In this work, single mode microwave irradiation is for the first time combined with microflow chemistry to fabricate Au-NPs continuously and reproducibly with controllable size in an aqueous solution. The major experimental parameters including microwave power, citrate-to-gold molar ratio ([Cit]/[Au]), and reaction residence time have been investigated systematically. As indicated by TEM, the mean particle width of the synthesized Au-NPs is between 4 and 15 nm with mean aspect ratio between similar to 1.4 and 2.2 after only 90 s of microwave irradiation. Furthermore, the Au particle morphology can be manipulated from nanowires to nanoparticles by adjusting the [Cit]/[Au] ratio. HRTEM analysis of the produced Au-NPs and UV-vis spectroscopy suggests a correlation between the red-shifted surface plasmon resonance peak and the particle aspect ratio that is probably dependent on the creation of particle-particle junctions, which alter both the size and the aspect ratio of the Au-NPs. The synthesis further demonstrated high reproducibility.

Abstract:Metallic alloy nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit interesting optical, electrical and catalytic properties, dependent on their size, shape and composition. In particular, silver–gold alloy NPs are widely applied as model systems to better understand the syntheses and formation (kinetics) of alloy NPs, as the two elements are fully miscible. Our study targets product design via environmentally friendly synthesis conditions. We use dextran as the reducing and stabilizing agent for the synthesis of homogeneous silver–gold alloy NPs at room temperature. Our approach is a one-pot, low temperature, reaction-controlled, green and scalable synthesis route of well-controlled composition and narrow particle size distribution. The composition over a broad range of molar gold contents is confirmed by scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDX) measurements and auxiliary inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy measurements (ICP-OES). The distributions of the resulting particles in size and composition are obtained from multi-wavelength analytical ultracentrifugation using the optical back coupling method and further confirmed by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Finally, we provide insight into the reaction kinetics during the synthesis, discuss the reaction mechanism and demonstrate possibilities for scale-up by a factor of more than 250 by increasing the reactor volume and NP concentration.

Abstract:Photoreduction of metallic nanoparticles can been used for localized and deterministic synthesis of nanostructures required for various applications. Specifically, in-situ photoreduction of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is a facile fabrication route that enables the fabrication of nanoplasmonic substrates. In the current work, we demonstrate an approach to fabricate hybrid plasmonic substrates using in-situ photoreduction of AgNPs within gold nanoapertures. The approach involves the top-down approach to fabricate NAs followed by a site specific synthesis of AgNPs within the NAs. Furthermore, we use dark-field imaging to monitor and understand the photoreduction within the gold NAs in real time. We demonstrate that a careful selection of experiment parameters aid to synthesize the AgNPs within NAs and the scattered light intensity can be used to map the charactereistics of the formed AgNPs. The illumination time, laser power and AgNO3 concentration can be used to tune the AgNPs characteristics. The demonstrated strategy for realizing hybrid plasmonic substrates can be used for the fabrication of substrates for SERS based sensors, enhancing of fluoroscence of molecules, and photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Spherical silver and gold nanoparticles with narrow size distributions were conveniently synthesized in aqueous solution by a novel electrochemical method. The technological keys to the electrochemical synthesis of monodispersed metallic nanoparticles lie in the choice of an ideal stabilizer for the metallic nanoclusters and the use of a rotating platinum cathode. Poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was chosen as the stabilizer for the silver and gold clusters. PVP not only protects metallic particles from agglomeration, but also promotes metal nucleation, which tends to produce small metal particles. Using a rotating platinum cathode effectively solves the technological difficulty of rapidly transferring the (electrochemically synthesized) metallic nanoparticles from the cathode vicinity to the bulk solution, avoiding the occurrence of flocculates in the vicinity of the cathode, and ensuring the monodispersity of the particles. The particle size and particle size distribution of the silver and gold nanoparticles were improved by adding sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) to the electrolyte. The electrochemically synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by TEM and UV/Vis spectroscopy.

Abstract:A green and simple approach has been developed to synthesize un-coated Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) in situ on the surface of thiol-group-functionalized silica dioxide microspheres (TSMs) in the aqueous solution. As soon as the Ag+ ions attach onto the surface of TSMs, nucleation and growth of AgNPs can spontaneously complete within one minute without other reducing agents or capping agents. The main reason is that the self-assembled silane-layer formed by mercaptosilane molecules could reduce the Ag0 formation energy, transport electrons efficiently, improve the nucleation density, and protect AgNPs against oxidation. Thus, the supported AgNPs show excellent chemical/photochemical stability in air and solution. Meanwhile, the size of as-prepared AgNPs could be controlled by tuning the concentration of Ag+ ions. This process provides a general route to generate bare AgNPs on the surface of silica dioxide in situ, which might be extended to other materials and is promising in developing novel methodologies for making supported noble metal NPs with desired structure and properties.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a method for synthesizing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) utilizing a sonication-assisted electrochemical approach with a common ultrasonic cleaner. Silver nitrate is employed as the precursor and polyvinylpyrrolidone functions as the ligand. The incorporation of sonication is identified as crucial for achieving several benefits such as enhanced mass transfer, improved dispersion of reactants, and the prevention of electrode fouling. Optimized sonication and electrochemical conditions synergistically contribute to a higher yield of well-dispersed Ag NPs, which are characterized by an average size of 10 nm. Furthermore, the electrode's suitability for the continuous synthesis of Ag NPs over an extended period is highlighted owing to effective electrode surface cleaning facilitated by sonication. This cleaning process proves to be essential in maintaining the electrochemical activity of the electrode, ensuring consistency in the synthesis process. The proposed sonication-assisted electrochemical synthesis method not only addresses challenges associated with electrode fouling but also significantly enhances the dispersity and yield of the resulting particles, making it valuable for scalability and practical applications in various fields, including sensors, catalysis, and nanotechnology.

Abstract:The plasmon-mediated synthesis of anisotropic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has only recently been investigated and achieved. This process typically utilizes the surface plasmon resonances (SPRs) of the nanoparticles themselves to drive metal deposition and growth. Many of the traditional methods for shape control, including use of functional surfactants and etchants, have yet to be utilized within the context of light-driven synthesis. Here, the underpotential deposition of Ag(I) is utilized as a shape-controlling strategy in a hot electron-driven photochemical synthesis to grow anisotropic gold nanoparticles. The strategy also relies on L-pyroglutamic acid, a natural amino acid metabolite, as a photochemical relay aiding in the transport and localization of plasmon-generated hot electrons. By carefully adjusting reagent concentrations, the morphologies of the resulting nanoparticles can be facilely tuned from spheres to nanostars and nanoflowers. The high extinction in the NIR region of the 'ideal' gold nanostars synthesized advocates their use as photothermal therapy agents, supported by a sufficient photothermal conversion efficiency ( η = 30.8%) under 808 nm CW laser irradiation. This contribution expands the repertoire of gold nanostructures accessible to visible-light-driven plasmonic photochemistry. Different gold nanoparticle shapes have been accessed using a plasmon-mediated growth technique. Ag(I) ions induce symmetry breaking, yielding nano-sized gold spheres, stars, and flowers. A specialized photoreactor, equipped with 505 nm LED illumination, facilitates the transfer of hot electrons from a pre-made gold nanocube seed surface. Gold reduction and deposition occur, and anisotropic structures grow with the aid of L-pyroglutamic acid and Triton X-100 as coordinating and shape-directing agents.

Abstract:Localized surface plasmon resonances in plasmonic nanoparticles enable effective photon harvesting and generate energetic electrons and holes. However, fast charge recombination and surface contamination due to reactant-involved synthesis can significantly hinder its reaction activity. Herein, we report a facile, solution-processed synthesis of hybrid uncoated silver nanoparticles combined with silicon nanocrystals to address these issues. The resulting hybrid nanocolloid exhibits enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction, achieving 1552 μmol/g and 100% selectivity for CO production.
