Abstract:Advances in sodium-ion batteries hugely rely on perfecting the performance of active electrode materials. In this paper, we offer a new NaVOPO4 polymorph adopting a KTiOPO4-type framework as a promising high-rate, low-strain and long-life positive electrode material for sodium-ion batteries. NaVOPO4 is prepared via a facile hydrothermally-assisted solid-state ion exchange. The crystal structure is refined based on synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and validated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), transmission electron microscopy analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The electrochemical performance of NaVOPO4 is evaluated through galvanostatic charge/discharge tests, cyclic voltammetry, potentiostatic intermittent titration and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A carbon-coated NaVOPO4 demonstrates a specific capacity of ∼110 mAh g–1 at a C/10 rate at an average potential of ∼3.93 V vs. Na+/Na. The material exhibits decent capacity retention and rate capability, maintaining over 74 % of the initial capacity after 1000 cycles at a C/2 rate and around 87% at a 2C charge/discharge rate. Diffusion coefficients of 10–11 cm2 s–1 and DFT-calculated energy barriers of ∼0.15–0.35 eV indicate fast Na+ ion diffusion within the NaVOPO4 framework. The vanadium oxidation state and charge compensation mechanism in NaVOPO4 are studied by XAS and DFT. Moreover, the operando XRD analysis coupled with DFT elucidates several phase transitions occurring in NaVOPO4 with an exceptionally low volume variation of 2.4% in total, highlighting the reversibility and structural stability during Na+ de/insertion. Overall, NaVOPO4 exhibits attractive electrochemical performance and stability, making it a potential candidate for sodium-ion battery cathode materials.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) are a potential lowcost alternative to lithium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage, but many high-capacity NIB cathode materials undergo irreversible structural changes during charge and discharge, leading to fast capacity fading. Herein, monoclinic NaVO3 exhibits good cycle performance with high capacity as a cathode material for NIBs. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies show that the material structure is virtually invariant during Na+ ( de)intercalation, with the a and b lattice parameters changing only by 0.13 and 0.19%, respectively. The material undergoes an oxygen redox reaction during initial charge while delivering a remarkable specific capacity of 245 mAh g-1 (1.2-4.7 V) with contributions from cationic (V4+/V5+) and anionic (O2-/O-) redox couples during discharge. The stable VO4 tetrahedral framework also enables the material to give superior rate and cycle capabilities, with a capacity of 164 mAh g(-1) (67% utilization) at a current of 1000 mA g(-1) (about 5C) and a capacity retention of 90% after 50 cycles. Density functional theory calculations further verify the stability of the material and the charge-discharge mechanism. This work can broaden the horizon for designing high-energy cathode materials with enhanced structural stability for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A novel alpha-CrPO4-type vanadium-based orthophosphate NaV3(PO4)(3) was synthesized as a promising anode material for Na-ion batteries, which exhibits a high reversible capacity of 140 mA h g(-1) with the capacity retention about 98% after 100 cycles. Furthermore, the electrochemical reaction mechanism, structure evolution and ionic diffusion of NaV3(PO4)(3) during the sodiation process were surveyed by the combination of experiments and first-principles calculations. Two different Wyckoff sites (4b, Na2 and 4c, Na3) which can accommodate more sodium ions, as well as the corresponding Na insertion process were reported to understand the sodium storage mechanism in NaV3(PO4)(3). The 3d-electron distribution near the Fermi level for vanadium in different valence states and sites (4a and 8g) in NaxV3(PO4)(3) (x = 1, 2, 3) and the local electron transfer during the sodiation process were described to predict the transition of the electrochemical properties. The cooperative-transport mechanism dominates the Na diffusion in NaxV3(PO4)(3) (1 <= x <= 3) and the activation barrier for Na+ transport in Na1.125V3(PO4)(3) (0.30 eV) is much lower than that in NaV3(PO4)(3) (1.28 eV), suggesting the fast-ion transport characteristics during the sodiation process and the strong stability of Na at the 4e site.

Abstract:Na-ion batteries (SIBs) are anticipated to capture a broad development space in the field of large-scale energy storage due to the abundant sodium resources. High-performance cathode materials are very critical. VOPO4 center dot 2H(2)O with a two-dimensional (2D) layered structure is a very promising candidate for SIBs because of its high working voltage and theoretical specific capacity. Herein, a simple one-step reflux method is designed to fabricate a cathode of VOPO4 center dot 2H(2)O nanosheets. It exhibits a high average operating potential of similar to 3.5 V, remarkable specific capacity (e.g., 135 mAh g(-1) at 0.05 C), favorable high current charge-discharge ability (e.g., 58 mAh g(-1) even at 20 C) as well as extralong cyclability (e.g., 0.026% capacity fading rate for per cycle at 20 C during 1000 cycles). The kinetic analysis implies that the superior sodium storage performance is mainly benefiting from the advantages of unique nanosheet structure, accelerating the rapid Na-ion diffusion.

Abstract:Sodium vanadium phosphate [Na3V2(PO4)3] with high voltage platform, low cost and environment friendliness has been considered as one of the most promising candidates as cathodes for high-performance sodium-ion batteries. However, the sodium storage property of Na3V2(PO4)3 is limited because of its low electronic conductivity and poor kinetic performance. Herein, MoO42--doped Na(3+2x)V2(PO4)(3-x)MoO4(x) [NVP-MoO4 (x), x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15] have been developed and prepared by a feasible solid-state reaction. The optimal NVP-MoO4 (0.10) delivers a high initial capacity of 108.9 mA h g-1 and presents an excellent capacity retention of 91.5% at 1 C after 150 cycles. In addition, the NVP-MoO4 (0.10) shows a good rate capability, delivering a relatively high capacity of 84.2 mA h g-1 at 50 C. The results of sodium storage measurement and density of states calculation indicate that MoO42- doping can significantly enhance the structural stability, promote the kinetics behavior and boost the electronic conductivity of the materials. In-situ XRD test reveals that the electrochemical reaction of the NVP-MoO4 (0.10) exhibits a highly reversible phase transition process. This work provides a new insight for the design of advanced cathodes for high-performance sodium-ion batteries by the strategy of unique anion doping.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries are the primary candidate for a low-cost and resource abundant alternative to lithium-ion batteries for large-scale electric storage applications. However, the development of sodium-ion batteries is hindered by the lack of suitable cathode materials that have sufficient specific energy density and cycle life. Here, we report layered NaVOPO4 as a cathode material that exhibits high voltage (similar to 3.5 V versus Na/Na+), high discharge capacity (144 mAh g(-1) at 0.05 C), and remarkable cyclability with 67% capacity retention over 1,000 cycles. The excellent performances result from the high Na+ ion diffusion rate in the two-dimensional path and the reversible transformation behavior of (de)sodiation. Particularly, this layered structure and its synthetic procedure can be extended to other alkali-metal intercalation materials, leading to other metal-ion battery systems, which opens a new avenue for large-scale energy storage systems with the development of high-energy density and long-life cathodes for electric storage applications.
Electronic structure, ion diffusion and cation doping in the Na4VO(PO4)2 compound as a cathode material for Na-ion batteries

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries are considered one of the most promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries owing to the low cost and wide abundance of sodium. Phosphate compounds are promising materials for sodium-ion batteries because of their high structural stability, energy densities and capacities. Vanadium phosphates have shown high energy densities, but their sodium-ion diffusion and cation doping properties are not fully rationalized. In this work, we combine density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations to study the electronic structure, ion diffusion and cation doping properties of the Na4VO(PO4)2 compound. The calculated Na-ion activation energy of this compound is 0.49 eV, which is typical for Na-based cathode materials, and the simulations predict a Na-ion diffusion coefficient of 5.1 × 10-11 cm2 s-1. The cell voltage trends show a voltage of 3.3 V vs. Na/Na+. Partial substitution of vanadium atoms by other metals (Al3+, Co2+, Fe3+, Mn4+, Ni2+ or Ti4+) increases the cell voltage up to 1.1 V vs. Na/Na+. These new insights will help us to understand the ion transport and electrochemical behaviour of potential phosphate cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Realizing multielectron redox reactions is a promising strategy to improve the specific capacity and energy density of rechargeable batteries. Although reversible two-electron redox has been demonstrated for a few cathode materials for Li-ion batteries, few examples are known for Na-ion batteries. Here, we have investigated the two-electron redox of β-VOPO4 for Na-ion intercalation via a combination of X-ray diffraction and absorption spectroscopic methods to elucidate the evolution of crystal and electronic structures. The insertion of two Na ions per formula unit of β-VOPO4 results in the irreversible structural phase transition to a new, expanded orthorhombic Na2VOPO4 phase, which can be reversibly cycled to an orthorhombic NaVOPO4. However, further extraction of Na ions from this new orthorhombic NaVOPO4 phase could not be realized even after charging to 4.3 V vs Na+/Na0.

Abstract:Polyanionic cathodes have attracted extensive research interest for Na-ion batteries (NIBs) due to their moderate energy density and desirable cycling stability. However, these compounds suffer from visible capacity fading and significant voltage decay upon the rapid sodium storage process, even if modified through nanoengineering or carbon-coating routes, leading to limited applications in NIBs. Herein, the Na3(VOPO4)2F cathode material with dominantly exposed {001} active facets is demonstrated by a topochemical synthesis route. Owing to the rational geometrical structure design and thereby directly shortening Na diffusion distance, the electrode delivers a reversible capacity of ∼129 mA h g-1 even at a high rate of 10 C, which is very close to the theoretical capacity of 132 mA h g-1, achieving a high energy density of ∼452 W h kg-1 coupled with a high-power density of 4660 W kg-1. When further served as a cathode for nonaqueous, aqueous-based, and solid-state full NIBs, respectively, our designed Na3(VOPO4)2F always enables superior electrochemical performance due to favorable kinetics.
Enhancing Reversible Na-ion Intercalation by Introducing K-ions into Layered Vanadyl Phosphate for Sodium-Ion Battery Cathodes

Abstract:Vanadium-based phosphates are being extensively studied as an important family of sodium-ion battery (SIB) cathodes. Among many compositions, NaVOPO4 is considered because of various polymorphs and the high redox potential of V4+/5+. However, due to relatively poor intrinsic kinetics and electronic conductivity, approaches such as nanostructuring and carbon composites are commonly used to avoid fast performance degradation. Being different from mainstream approaches, this work utilizes the knowledge gained from potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) and applies layered KVOPO4, a PIB cathode material, as a SIB cathode material. The results demonstrate that KVOPO4 experiences an electrochemical K+-Na+ exchange during the initial cycle and a Na-dominated (de)intercalation process in the following cycles. The initial exchange results in a small amount of K+ (similar to 0.1 K per formula) remaining in the interlayer space and owing to the larger size of K+ than Na+, the residual K+ effectively acts as 'pillars' to expand interlayer spacing and facilitates the Na (de)intercalation, leading to enhanced reversible Na storage and diffusion kinetics of KVOPO4 compared to its Na counterpart NaVOPO4. KVOPO4 delivers an initial discharge capacity of 120 mAh g-1 (90% of the theoretical capacity) at 10 mA g-1 and retains 88% capacity after 150 cycles. It also delivers 52 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 and 91% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 100 mA g-1, completely outperforming NaVOPO4.
Realizing high-performance Na3V2(PO4)2O2F cathode for sodium-ion batteries via Nb-doping

Abstract:Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 O 2 F (NVPOF) has received considerable interest as a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries because of its high working voltage and good structural/thermal stability. However, the sluggish electrode reaction resulting from its low intrinsic electronic conductivity significantly restricts its electrochemical performance and thus its practical application. Herein, Nb-doped Na 3 V 2− x Nb x (PO 4 ) 2 O 2 F/graphene (rGO) composites ( x = 0, 0.05, 0.1) were prepared using a solvothermal method followed by calcination. Compared to the un-doped NVPOF/rGO, doping V-site with high-valence Nb element (Nb 5+ ) (Na 3 V 1.95 Nb 0.05 (PO 4 ) 2 O 2 F/rGO (NVN05POF/rGO)) can result in the generated V 4+ /V 3+ mixed-valence, ensuring the lower bandgap and thus the increased intrinsic electronic conductivity. Besides, the expanded lattice space favors the Na + migration. With the structure feature where NVN05POF particles are attached to the rGO sheets, the electrode reaction kinetics is further accelerated owing to the well-constructed electron conductive network. As a consequence, the as-prepared NVN05POF/rGO sample exhibits a high specific capacity of ∼72 mAh·g −1 at 10C (capacity retention of 65.2% (vs. 0.5C)) and excellent long-term cycling stability with the capacity fading rate of ∼0.099% per cycle in 500 cycles at 5C.

Abstract:We study Na ion diffusion and electrochemical performance of NaVO$_3$ (NVO) as anode material in Li/Na--ion batteries with the specific capacity of $\approx$350 mAhg$^{-1}$ at the current density 11~mAg$^{-1}$ after 300 cycles. Remarkably, the capacity retains $\ge$200~mAhg$^{-1}$ even after 400~cycles at 44~mAg$^{-1}$ with Coulombic efficiency $>$99\%. The deduced diffusion coefficient from galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements for NVO as anode in Li--ion battery is in the range of 10$^{-10}$--10$^{-12}$~cm$^2$s$^{-1}$. In case of Na-ion batteries, the NVO electrode exhibits initial capacity of 385~mAhg$^{-1}$ at 7~mAg$^{-1}$ current rate, but the capacity degradation is relatively faster in subsequent cycles. We find the diffusion coefficient of NVO--Na cells similar to that of NVO--Li. On the other hand, our charge discharge measurements suggest that the overall performance of NVO anode is better in Li--ion battery than Na-ion. Moreover, we use the density functional theory to simulate the energetics of Na vacancy formation in the bulk of the NVO structure, which is found to be 0.88~eV higher than that of the most stable (100) surface. Thus, the Na ion incorporation at the surface of the electrode material is more facile compared to the bulk.

Abstract:First-principles calculations combined with density functional theory were performed to illuminate the electrochemical properties of NaVPO4F. During desodiation to VPO4F, a similar to 11% volume change was observed, which was similar to 2% greater than that from LiVPO4F to VPO4F. An intermediate phase was observed while examining the structural stability during Na+ extraction from NaVPO4F. The voltage profile showed a distinct charging plateau positioned at similar to 4.0 V. Bader charge analysis elucidated the reduction of charge-oriented V cations during Na+ extraction. The achieved electron density profiles were examined to analyze the influence of Na+ extraction on V-F and V-O bonds during the desodiation process. The most facile diffusion pathway for Na+ was discerned, with a minimum energy barrier of 0.85 eV. On the basis of these results, NaVPO4F was suggested as a promising cathode material for Na-ion batteries.

Abstract:The recent discovery of a fast-charging vanadium-based disordered rock-salt anode for lithium-ion batteries (Nature, 2020, 585, 63−67) has rekindled great interest to screen possible anode candidates from the existing cathodes by studying their underexplored low-voltage ion storage behavior, particularly for vanadium-based compounds. Among them, layered NH4V4O10 (NVO) material is typically known as an intercalation-type cathode material, with large interlayer spacing for facile ion intercalation; however, to date, there is no investigation of its utilization as a potential anode material. Here, the vanadium redox and structural evolution of NVO nanobelts (NBs) under an anode voltage window (0.01−3.0 V vs. Na+/Na) are carefully studied by in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical measurements. By in-situ TEM tracking the full sodiation process in real-time, a stepwise Na-storage reaction mechanism is revealed, initiating with the interlaminar intercalation of Na ions accompanied with the appearance of Na x NVO phase and ending with the conversion reaction with the final formation of V2O3 phase. While upon desodiation, the V2O3 phase can only be oxidized to VO2 phase, rather than the original NVO phase. Afterward, a reversible conversion reaction between VO2 and V2O3 phases is established upon the subsequent (de)sodiation cycles, which delivers a reversible cycling capacity of 148 mAh g–1 at 1 C, as verified by electrochemical measurements. The in-situ observation also witnesses the emergence of nanopores in NBs that may alleviate significant structural strain and contribute to the long-term cycling stability during the following (de)sodiation cycles. This work has validated for the first time the practicability of NVO as an anode material in sodium-ion batteries and afforded a paradigm of revisiting existing cathodes to explore their possible anode utilization.

Abstract:Na-ion batteries (SIBs) are anticipated to capture a broad development space in the field of large-scale energy storage due to the abundant sodium resources. High-performance cathode materials are very critical. VOPO4⋅2H2O with a two-dimensional (2D) layered structure is a very promising candidate for SIBs because of its high working voltage and theoretical specific capacity. Herein, a simple one-step reflux method is designed to fabricate a cathode of VOPO4⋅2H2O nanosheets. It exhibits a high average operating potential of ∼3.5 V, remarkable specific capacity (e.g., 135 mAh g–1 at 0.05 C), favorable high current charge-discharge ability (e.g., 58 mAh g–1 even at 20 C) as well as extralong cyclability (e.g., 0.026% capacity fading rate for per cycle at 20 C during 1000 cycles). The kinetic analysis implies that the superior sodium storage performance is mainly benefiting from the advantages of unique nanosheet structure, accelerating the rapid Na-ion diffusion.

Abstract:Na3V(PO4)2 was reported recently as a novel cathode material with high theoretical energy density for Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, whether V3+/V4+/V5+ multielectron reactions can be realized during the charging process is still an open question. In this work, Na3V(PO4)2 is synthesized by using a solid-state method. Its atomic composition and crystal structure are verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and neutron diffraction (ND) joint refinement. The electrochemical performance of Na3V(PO4)2 is evaluated in two different voltage windows, namely 2.5-3.8 and 2.5-4.3 V. 51V solid-state NMR (ssNMR) results disclose the presence of V5+ in Na2-xV(PO4)2 when charging Na3V(PO4)2 to 4.3 V, confirming Na3V(PO4)2 is a potential high energy density cathode through realization of V3+/V4+/V5+ multielectron reactions.

Abstract:Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) cathode material of the sodium ion battery (1 C=117 mAh g-1) has a NASICON-type structure, which not only facilitates the rapid migration of sodium ions, but also has a small volume deformation during sodium ion de-intercalation and the main frame mechanism remains unchanged, and thus is seen as an energy storage material for a wide range of applications, but has a limited electronic conductivity due to its structure. In this paper, NVP cathode materials with finer primary particles are successfully prepared using a simple hydrothermal treatment-assisted sol-gel method. The increased pore size of the NVP materials prepared under the hydrothermal process allows for more active sites and more effective resistance to the volume deformation of sodium ions during insertion/extraction processes, effectively facilitating the diffusion of ions and electrons. The Na3V2(PO4)3 material obtained by the optimized process exhibited good crystallinity in XRD characterization, as well as superior electrochemical properties in a series of electrochemical tests. A specific capacitance of 106.3 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C is demonstrated, compared to 96.5 mAh g-1 for Na3V2(PO4)3 without hydrothermal treatment, and cycling performance is also improved with 93% capacity retention. The calculated sodium ion diffusion coefficient (DNa = 5.68 × 10-14) obtained after EIS curve fitting of the improved sample illustrates that the pore structure is beneficial to the performance of the Na3V2(PO4)3 cathode material.

Abstract:A novel synthetic method has been investigated to fabricate a 1D nanostructure Na7V4(P2O7)4PO4. Mixed polyanion materials with a well-defined 3D framework channel can improve the electrochemical performance of sodium reversible insertion/extraction reactions, and can be especially beneficial for high rate performance and cycling capability. It approaches an initial reversible electrochemical capacity of 92.0 mA h g−1 with a high discharge potential over 3.85 V (vs. Na/Na+) and good cycling properties with a capacity retention of 81.4% after 300 cycles at a 0.5C rate in sodium systems. Taking into consideration the superior electrochemical characteristics, the phase-pure composite is considered to have a promising high rate capability as well as being a high capacity electrode material for advanced energy storage applications.
