Abstract:Introduction: Biometric authentication played an important role in security access system based on physiological or behavioral characteristics of an individual. Ballistocardiogram (BCG), which was used to evaluate the cardiac function, exhibited significant inter-individual variability resulted by multiple physical factors. In this paper, we investigated the feasibility of BCG for person identification by analyzing the intraindividual and inter-individual correlations of BCG segments. Methods: We collected BCG signal from 25 subjects with our lab-developed BCG chair. For each subjects, we calculated averaged BCGs from two 10-s segments for enrollment (aBCGe ) and for testing (aBCG t ), respectively. Correlation between the input signal and enrollment templates was used to determine the identity. Furthermore, we discussed the significance of different BCG wave components in identification and deduced the minimum wave combinations required for high-performance biometric authentication using time-dependent correlation (TDC). Results: The BCG-based identification system could successfully identify 24 out of 25 subjects. Investigation on TDC results showed that (1) the H-I-J-K-L components of BCG carried more identity information than M-N-O-P BCG components; (2) it was difficult to determine the identity based on a single wave component and (3) the minimum requirement of time sequence for identification based on correlation analysis was in the time interval [0 300] out of 500-point segment. Discussion: The results proved that BCG carried identity information and could be used as a promising technique for biometric authentication. Compared to current techniques, BCG was competitive because of its significant inter-individual variability, unconstrained measurement and non-forgeability. The performance of the system will be further validated using large-scale samples and systematic methodologies. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
