Abstract:We reports a mechanical interlocking donor‐acceptor [2]catenane, which is able to form varying degrees of self‐complexed or decomplexed compounds that alter the cavity size of the crown ether and affecting the circumrotation behavior of CBPQT ⋅ 4PF6 ring of the catenane. Dynamic control of the motion in a catenane remains a big challenge as it requires precise design and sophisticated well‐organized structures. This paper reports the design and synthesis of a donor‐acceptor [2]catenane through mechanical interlocking, employing a crown ether featuring two dibenzylammonium salts on its side arms as the host and a cyclobis(paraquat‐p‐phenylene) (CBPQT ⋅ 4PF6) ring as the guest molecule. By addition of external acid or base, the catenane can form self‐complexed or decomplexed compounds to alter the cavity size of the crown ether ring, consequently affecting circumrotation rate of CBPQT ⋅ 4PF6 ring of the catenane. This study offers insights for the design and exploration of artificial molecular machines with intricate cascading responsive mechanisms.

Abstract:Abstract Responsive synthetic receptors for adaptive recognition of different ionic guests in a competitive environment are valuable molecular tools for not only ion sensing and transport, but also the development of ion-responsive smart materials and related technologies. By virtue of the mechanical chelation and ability to undergo large-amplitude co-conformational changes, described herein is the discovery of a chameleon-like [2]catenane that selectively binds copper(I) or sulfate ions and its associated co-conformational mechanostereochemical switching. This work highlights not only the advantages and versatility of catenane as a molecular skeleton in receptor design, but also its potential in constructing complex responsive systems with multiple inputs and outputs.

Abstract:This paper describes the self-assembly of a new class of three-component dynamic [2]catenanes, which are driven or stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonding, coordination, and electrostatic interaction. One of the component molecules 2, consisting of an aromatic oligoamide spacer and two peripheral zinc porphyrin units, was designed to adopt a folded preorganized conformation, which is stabilized by consecutive intramolecular three-centered hydrogen bonds. Component molecule 3 is a linear secondary ammonium bearing two peripheral pyridine units, which was designed to form a 1:1 complex with 24-crown-8 (5). The 1H NMR and UV−vis experiments in CDCl3−CD3CN (4:1 v/v) revealed that, due to the preorganized U-shaped feature, 2 could efficiently bind 3 through the cooperative zinc−pyridine coordination to generate highly stable 1:1 complex 2·3. Adding 5 to the 1:1 solution of 2 and 3 led to the formation of dynamic three-component [2]catenane 2·3·5 as a result of the threading of 3 through 5. 1H NMR studies indicated that in the 1:1:1 solution (3 mM) [2]catenane 2·3·5 was generated in 55% yield at 25 °C. The yield was increased with the reduction of the temperature and [2]catenane could be produced quantitatively in a 1:1:2 solution ([2] = 3 mM) at −13 °C. Replacing 3 with 1,2-bis(4,4‘-bipyridinium)ethane (4) in the three-component solution could also give rise to similar dynamic [2]catenane 2·4·5 albeit in slightly lower yield.
A novel pH-responsive supramolecular polymer constructed by pillar[5]arene-based host-guest interactions

Abstract:A novel pH-responsive supramolecular polymer based on the pillar[5]arene/imidazolium cation recognition motif was successfully prepared. It was demonstrated that the binding strength between the monomer molecules in solution could be reduced by adding base, thereby leading to a decrease in the polymerization degree, while a reverse switch could be achieved by the addition of acid to change the monomer back to the cationic state. These processes were confirmed by H-1 NMR, DOSY experiments, viscosity measurements and theoretical calculations. Moreover, a rod-like fiber was drawn from a high concentration solution of the monomer and characterized by SEM, providing direct evidence of the formation of a supramolecular polymer with high molecular weight and high degree of the linear chain extension. In this study, a reversible transition between the high-molecular-weight supramolecular polymer and the relatively low-molecular-weight one, that is, a control of the polymerization degree, was realized by simply altering the solution pH. These results are helpful for the future fabrication of adaptive and smart supramolecular materials with stimuli-responsiveness and special functions.

Abstract:Oxime condensation as well as template-directed synthesis based on radical-pairing interactions were used in the synthesis of an octacationic [2]catenane in 20 % yield. The [2]catenane consists of two identical mechanically interlocked tetracationic macrocyclic components. Each of the ring components contains two dicationic bipyridinium (BIPY2+) functions. The structure of the [2]catenane was fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, as well as X-ray crystallography. In the oxidized state, the [2]catenane exists in a co-conformation where its four BIPY2+ units are located as far as possible from each other. Upon reduction of BIPY2+ into the radical state, namely BIPY+., we propose that the [2]catenane undergoes mechanical movement, driven by radical pairing interactions between these radical building blocks. The redox-stimulated switching behavior of this [2]catenane was confirmed by electrochemistry, UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, and H-1 NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract:A pair of comparable sized C‐shaped bis‐monodentate ligands (L1 and L22+) and a linear bis‐monodentate ligand (L3) complimenting to the terminal‐lengths of the C‐shaped ligands have been identified. One‐pot combination of cis‐Pd(tmeda)2+, L1 and L3 (2:1:1 ratio) in water resulted an octa‐cationic 2‐catenane, [Pd2(tmeda)2(L1)(L3)]28+ in which two identical tetra‐cationic macromonocyclic coordination rings are interlocked; however, a guest bound coordination ring was formed in presence of a selected di‐anionic guest. Complexation of cis‐Pd(tmeda)2+ with a mixture of L22+ and L3 (2:1:1 ratio) in water resulted the hexa‐cationic macromonocyclic coordination ring, [Pd2(tmeda)2(L2)(L3)]6+ whereas a guest bound coordination ring was formed in the presence of the di‐anionic guest. Addition of the guest to the preformed octa‐cationic catenane caused ring separation to favour the guest‐bound ring. This guest bound ring could be reverted to the 2‐catenane by sequestering the bound guest using the relatively electron deficient hexa‐cationic coordination ring. Thus, a design principle for reversible switching between a 2‐catenane and the constituent macromonocyclic‐rings using anion‐binding/‐sequestering as the core concept has been established.

Abstract:Novel dynamic [2]catenanes interlocked by the quadruple hydrogen bonding ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) motif have been developed. The dynamic catenation process was due to the selective cyclization of bifunctional UPy molecules over a wide concentration range with the assistance of the cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT(4+)) macrocycle. The self-assembled [2] catenanes were stabilized by a combination of different non-covalent interactions comprising quadruple hydrogen bonding and host-guest interactions. This type of non-covalent bonded catenane is the first one interlocked by multiple hydrogen bonding interactions instead of metal-ligand interactions.

Abstract:An octacationic diazaperopyrenium (DAPP2+)-based homo[2]catenane (DAPPHC8+), wherein no fewer than eight positive charges are associated within a mechanically interlocked molecule, has been produced in 30% yield under ambient conditions as a result of favorable homophilic interactions, reflecting a delicate balance between strong π-π interactions and the destabilizing penalty arising from Coulombic repulsions between DAPP2+ units. This DAPPHC8+ catenane is composed of two identical mechanically interlocked tetracationic cyclophanes, namely DAPPBox4+, each of which contains one DAPP2+ unit and one extended viologen (ExBIPY2+) unit, linked together by two p-xylylene bridges. The solid-state structure of the homo[2]catenane demonstrates how homophilic interactions play an important role in the formation of DAPPHC8+, in which the mean ring planes of the two DAPPBox4+ cyclophanes are oriented at about 60° with respect to each other, with a centroid-to-centroid separation of 3.7 Å between the mean planes of the outer ExBIPY2+ and inner DAPP2+ units, and 3.6 Å between the mean planes of the two inner DAPP2+ units. We show that irradiation of the DAPPHC8+ catenane at 330 nm in acetonitrile solution results in simultaneous energy and electron transfer. The latter occurs from the inner DAPP2+ dimer to the outer ExBIPY2+ unit, leading to the generation of a temporary charge-separated state within a rigid and robust homo[2]catenane. Compared to DAPPBox4+, both forward- and back-electron transfer in DAPPHC8+ occur with faster rates, owing to the closer proximity between the electron donor and acceptor in the homo[2]catenane than in the separated cyclophane.

Abstract:A bistable [2]catenane composed of a tetracationic cyclophane, namely cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT4+) that is mechanically interlocked by a neutral macrocylic component containing both a 1,5-dioxynaphthalene (DNP) and a naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide) (NDI) unit, was obtained by using template-directed synthesis via click chemistry. In the fully oxidized state, the CBPQT4+ component encircles the DNP unit, driven by donor-acceptor interactions. Upon reduction of both the CBPQT4+ ring and the NDI unit, the CBPQT2(˙+) ring undergoes shuttling and resides on the NDI˙- station, driven by coulombic-enhanced spin-pairing interactions between different aromatic radicals.

Abstract:The rapid preparation of a pyridine- N -oxide containing [2]catenane is described. The [2]catenane was characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and X-ray single crystal structure determination. 1 H NMR titration experiments reveal the [2]catenane may be reversibly protonated, as well as an ability to bind lithium cations more strongly than sodium cations.

Abstract:New stimulus responsive scaffolds are of interest as constituents of hierarchical supramolecular ensembles. 1,3,5-2,4,6-Functionalized, facially segregated benzene moieties have a time-honored role as building blocks for host molecules. However, their user as switchable motifs in the construction of multi-component supramolecular structures remains poorly explored. Here, we report a molecular cage 1, which consists of a bent anthracene dimer 3 paired with 1,3,5-tris(aminomethyl)-2,4,6-triethylbenzene 2. As the result of the pH-induced ababab ↔ bababa isomerization of the constituent functionalized benzene units derived from 2, this cage can reversibly convert between an open state and a closed form, both in solution and in the solid state. Cage 1 was used to create stimuli-responsive hierarchical superstructures, viz. Russian doll-like complexes with [K⊂18-crown-6⊂1]+ and [K⊂cryptand-222⊂1]+. The reversible assembly and disassembly of these superstructures could be induced by switching cage 1 from its open to closed form. The present study thus provides an unusual example where pH-triggered conformation motion within a cage-like scaffold is used to control the formation and disassociation of hierarchical ensembles.

Abstract:Cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) represent a significant challenge for the synthesis of mechanically interlocked architectures, because they lack heteroatoms, which precludes traditional active and passive template methods. To circumvent this problem and explore the fundamental and functional properties of CPP rotaxanes and catenanes, researches have resorted to unusual non-covalent and even to labor-intensive covalent template approaches. Herein, we report a ring-in-ring non-covalent template strategy that makes use of the surprisingly strong non-covalent inclusion of crown ethers into suitably sized CPPs. By threading a secondary ammonium salt through the crown ether and closing the third ring via Cu-AAC click reaction, we obtained a hetero-[3]catenane comprising [12]CPP, 24-crown-8 and a dibenzylammonium macrocycle. X-ray crystallography shed light on the ring-in-ring pre-organization and the [3]catenane topology was confirmed by NMR and MS-MS studies. Molecular simulations provided insights into the intriguing ring-vs.-ring-vs.-ring dynamics of the [3]catenane, which are highly dependent on the protonation state of the dibenzylammonium site. This ring-in-ring assembly strategy opens new avenues for the synthesis of complex CPP architectures and their use in functional supramolecular systems.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive unimolecular chirality switching is a highly intriguing topic because the molecular structure as well as its function can be adjusted simultaneously by a switching process. Herein, a novel acid/base-tunable unimolecular chirality switching system based on a pillar[5]azacrown pseudo[1]catenane is reported. The bicyclic pillar[5]azacrown pseudo[1]catenane PN4 is synthesized through fusing an azacrown ring onto one repeating unit of a pillar[5]arene. Protonation and deprotonation can reversibly regulate the conformational transformations of PN4 between self-inclusion and self-exclusion structures, which results in the chiroptical inversions of the pseudo[1]catenane. NMR spectra, circular dichroism spectra, and single-crystal structures demonstrate these processes. This pseudo[1]catenane is a novel pillararene-based unimolecular chirality switching system driven by acid/base responsiveness and reveals a new perspective on the supramolecular chirality chemistry of macrocycles.

Abstract:Supramolecular hyperbranched polymers not only possess the polymeric properties of hyperbranched polymers but also obtain additional stimuli-responsiveness due to the dynamic properties of non-covalent interactions. Herein, a novel supramolecular hyperbranched polymer constructed by an AB2 -type copillar[5]arene is reported. NMR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and viscosity experiments are utilized to characterize the self-aggregate process of the AB2 monomers. Interestingly, the supramolecular hyperbranched polymer exhibits pH-responsiveness. After protonation of the AB2 monomers by trifluoroacetic acid, the binding ability among the monomers becomes stronger, leading to the formation of supramolecular hyperbranched polymers with viscosity change. Additionally, although no conventional chromophores are doped, the supramolecular hyperbranched polymer shows a blue emission under irradiation. The fluorescence can be quenched upon addition of trifluoroacetic acid. This study enriches the field of supramolecular polymers with new building blocks and architectures and provided a new effective method for the fabrication of smart polymer materials with stimuli-responsiveness and special functions.

Abstract:A tristable [2]catenane, composed of a macrocyclic polyether incorporating 1,5-dioxynaphthalene (DNP) and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) units along with a 4,4'-bipyridinium (BIPY center dot+) radical cation as three very different potential recognition sites, interlocked mechanically with the tetracationic cyclophane, cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT(4+)), was synthesized by donor-acceptor templation, employing a "threading-followed-by-cyclization" approach. In this catenane, movement of the CEPQT(4+) ring in its different redox states among these three potential recognition sites, with corresponding color changes, is achieved by tuning external redox potentials. In the starting state, where no external potential is applied, the ring encircles the TTF unit and displays a green color. Upon oxidation of the TTF unit, the CBPQT(4+) ring moves to the DNP unit, producing a red color. Finally, if all the BIPY2+ units are reduced to BIPY center dot+ radical cations, the resulting CBPQT(2(center dot+)) diradical dication will migrate to the BIPY center dot+ unit, resulting in a purple color. These readily switchable electrochromic properties render the [2]-catenane attractive for use in electro-optical devices.

Abstract:A mono-biotin-functionalized pillar[5]arene P1 was synthesized by the click reaction, which could form a stable pseudo[1]rotaxane P1' in a non-polar or weak-polar solution. Interestingly, the obtained pseudo[1]rotaxane P1' exhibited a dynamic slow disassembly process within the NMR timescale upon adding a strong-polar solvent or competitive guest. Moreover, this dynamic behavior also had potential application in aqueous solution, which might be used as a switch to turn on or off the bioactivity of the biotin moiety.

Abstract:A novel cooperative pseudo[3]rotaxane system was successfully constructed by the inclusion complexation of two identical amine naphthotubes with a bis-pyridinium/isoquinolinium guest. Single crystal structure analysis revealed that weak Csp3-H···O hydrogen bonds between the two hosts are responsible for the positive cooperativity during the formation of pseudo[3]rotaxanes. Moreover, the intermolecular charge-transfer interactions between the electron-rich host and the electron-poor guests were observed. The pseudo[3]rotaxanes showed pH-controllable association/dissociation processes with naked-eye color changes in the solution.

Abstract:Although catenated cages have been widely constructed due to their unique and elegant topological structures, cyclic catenanes formed by the connection of multiple catenane units have been rarely reported. Herein, based on the orthogonal metal-coordination-driven self-assembly, we prepare a series of heterometallic [2]catenanes and cyclic bis[2]catenanes, whose structures are clearly evidenced by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Owing to the multiple positively charged nature, as well as the potential synergistic effect of the Cu(I) and Pt(II) metal ions, the cyclic bis[2]catenanes display broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. This work not only provides an efficient strategy for the construction of heterometallic [2]catenanes and cyclic bis[2]catenanes but also explores their applications as superior antibacterial agents, which will promote the construction of advanced supramolecular structures for biomedical applications.
