Abstract:In this paper, by briefly reviewing the keynote speeches and pre-conference workshops of Evolang10, we revisited the flourishing development of evolutionary linguistics in the past two decades, and gave three comments on Evolang conference series, including: (a) reconsideration of the repulsive attitude toward historical linguistics research; (b) future directions of modeling and experimental studies; and (c) necessity of pragmatics and neuroscience explorations in evolutionary linguistics. In the end, we summarized the key contributions from Chinese scholars to evolutionary linguistics, rich linguistic resources in China, possible facets where Chinese scholars can make significant contributions, and current status of evolutionary linguistics research in China. We welcome and encourage more Chinese scholars to step into evolutionary linguistics and make our contributions to this booming field.

This four-day workshop covered eight important topics of language change, i.e. the emergence of syllabic languages, special changes in Tibeto-Burman languages, Literal/Colloquial competition, formation of the Huihui language, bilingual development, phonemic load, dynamic studies of Chinese, and the Sino-Tai hypothesis.

Abstract:The Queen Mary conference on “Integrating Genetic and Cultural Evolutionary Approaches to Language,” and the papers in this special issue, clearly illustrate the excitement and potential of trans-disciplinary approaches to language as an evolved biological capacity (phylogeny) and an evolving cultural entity (glossogeny). Excepting the present author, the presenters/authors are mostly young rising stars in their respective fields, and include scientists with backgrounds in linguistics, animal communication, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, anthropology, and computer science. On display was a clear willingness to engage with different approaches and terminology and a commitment to shared standards of scientific rigor, empirically driven theory, and logical argument. Because the papers assembled here, together with the introduction, speak for themselves, I will focus in this “extro-duction” on some of the terminological and conceptual difficulties which threaten to block this exciting wave of scientific progress in understanding language evolution, in both senses of that term. In particular I will first argue against the regrettably widespread practice of opposing cultural and genetic explanations of human cognition as if they were dichotomous. Second, I will unpack the debate concerning “general-purpose” and “domain-specific” mechanisms, which masquerades as a debate about nativism but is nothing of the sort. I believe that framing discussions of language in these terms has generated more heat than light, and that a modern molecular understanding of genes, development, behavior, and evolution renders many of the assumptions underlying this debate invalid.

Abstract:In July of 2021, the Santa Fe Institute hosted a workshop on evolutionary computation as part of its Foundations of Intelligence in Natural and Artificial Systems project. This project seeks to advance the field of artificial intelligence by promoting interdisciplinary research on the nature of intelligence. The workshop brought together computer scientists and biologists to share their insights about the nature of evolution and the future of evolutionary computation. In this report, we summarize each of the talks and the subsequent discussions. We also draw out a number of key themes and identify important frontiers for future research.

Abstract:ABSlRACT This paper discusses the role of linguistics in studying human evolution. In the preamble on major steps in the evolution of language, special attention is paid to the coevolution of brain and evolution, and to the two major steps in the ev()lution of language. In the second section, three senses of the word "reconciliation" are considered: [I] between the out-of-Mrica hypothesis and the multiregional continuity hypothesis, [2] among the various disciplines concerned with human evolution, and [3] between the effects of vertical transmission aIld those of horizontal transmission. In the third section, three specific uses for linguistics are discussed: [I] the grouping of languages as a way of grouping peoples, [2] the proto-lexicon as a source of prehistoric information, and [3] the dating of language splits as a resource for studying ancient migrations. In regard to the last topic, some possible uses of error matrices as a clue for horizontal transmission are discussed.

Abstract:Evolutionary computation is used to explore the emergence of language, focusing particularly on the intrinsic relationship between the lexicon and syntax, and the exogenous relationship between language use and cultural development. A multi-agent model traces a coevolution of the lexicon and syntax, and demonstrates that linguistic and some distance constraint on communications can trigger and maintain cultural heterogeneity. This model also traces an optimization process using evolutionary mechanisms based on local information. Certain mechanisms in this model, such as recurrent pattern extraction, strength-based competition and indirect feedback, can be generalized to study robot learning, optimization and other evolutionary phenomena.

Abstract:We survey recent computer modelling research of language evolution, focusing on a rule-based model simulating the lexicon–syntax coevolution and an equation-based model quantifying the language competition dynamics. We discuss four predictions of these models: (a) correlation between domain-general abilities (e.g. sequential learning) and language-specific mechanisms (e.g. word order processing); (b) coevolution of language and relevant competences (e.g. joint attention); (c) effects of cultural transmission and social structure on linguistic understandability; and (d) commonalities between linguistic, biological, and physical phenomena. All these contribute significantly to our understanding of the evolutions of language structures, individual learning mechanisms, and relevant biological and socio-cultural factors. We conclude the survey by highlighting three future directions of modelling studies of language evolution: (a) adopting experimental approaches for model evaluation; (b) consolidating empirical foundations of models; and (c) multi-disciplinary collaboration among modelling, linguistics, and other relevant disciplines.

But the amount of funds are not adequate as a whole. Current research reflects a variety of different scientific values and influences. The Keywords which appear over twenty times in linguistic papers reflect the characteristics and trends of linguistic research today. Western linguistic theories have a great influence on linguistic research in China. There are many special topics which are neglected by scholars.

Abstract:Research into the emergence and evolution of human language has received unprecedented attention during the past 15 years. Efforts to better understand the processes of language emergence and evolution have proceeded in two main directions: from the top-down (linguists) and from the bottom-up (cognitive scientists). Language can be viewed as an invading process that has had profound impact on the human phenotype at all levels, from the structure of the brain to modes of cultural interaction. In our view, the most effective way to form a connection between the two efforts (essential if theories for language evolution are to reflect the constraints imposed on language by the brain) lies in computational modelling, an approach that enables numerous hypotheses to be explored and tested against objective criteria and which suggest productive paths for empirical researchers to then follow. Here, with the aim of promoting the cross-fertilization of ideas across disciplines, we review some of the recent research that has made use of computational methods in three principal areas of research into language evolution: language emergence, language change, and language death.

Although interlinguistics properly includes the scientific study and systematic improvement of international linguistic communication in general, the creation and use of planned languages (international auxiliary languages) remains its chief object of research. Constructing a Consensus on Language Evolution? Convergences and Differences Between Biolinguistic and Usage-Based Approaches

Abstract:Two of the main theoretical approaches to the evolution of language are biolinguistics and usage-based approaches. Both are often conceptualized as belonging to seemingly irreconcilable "camps." Biolinguistic approaches assume that the ability to acquire language is based on a language-specific genetic foundation. Usage-based approaches, on the other hand, stress the importance of domain-general cognitive capacities, social cognition, and interaction. However, there have been a number of recent developments in both paradigms which suggest that biolinguistic and usage-based approaches are actually moving closer together. For example, theoretical advancements such as evo-devo and complex adaptive system theory have gained traction in the language sciences, leading to changed conceptions of issues like the relative influence of "nature" and "nurture." In this paper, we outline points of convergence between current minimalist biolinguistic and usage-based approaches regarding four contentious issues: (1) modularity and domain specificity; (2) innateness and development; (3) cultural and biological evolution; and (4) knowledge of language and its description. We show that across both paradigms, researchers have come to increasingly embrace more complex views of these issues. They also have come to appreciate the view that biological and cultural evolution are closely intertwined, which lead to an increased amount of common ground between minimalist biolinguistics and usage-based approaches.
Language evolution from a simulation perspective: on the coevolution of compositionality and regularity

Abstract:The thesis presents a multi-agent computational model to explore a key question in language emergence, i.e., whether syntactic abilities result from innate, species-specific competences, or they evolve from domain-general abilities through gradual adaptations. The model simulates a process of coevolutionary emergence of two linguistic universals (compositionality, in the form of lexical items; and regularity, in the form of constitute word orders) in human language, i.e., the acquisition and conventionalization of these features coevolve during the transition from a holistic signaling system to a compositional language. It also traces a "bottom-up" process of syntactic development, i.e., agents, by reiterating local orders between two lexical items, can gradually form global order(s) to regulate multiple lexical items in sentences. These results suggest that compositionality, regularity, and correlated linguistic abilities could have emerged as a result of some domain-general abilities, such as pattern extraction and sequential learning. In addition to individual learning mechanisms, the thesis further explores the effects of cultural transmission, social and semantic structures on language evolution. First, it simulates some major forms of cultural transmission, and discusses the role of conventionalization during horizontal transmission in language evolution. Second, it traces the emergence and maintenance of language in some stable social structures, and explores the role of popular agents in language evolution, the relationship between mutual understanding and social hierarchy, and the effect of exoteric communications on the convergence of communal languages. Finally, it studies language maintenance given different semantic spaces, and illustrates that the semantic structure may cause bias in the constituent word order, which can help to predict the word order bias in human languages. These explorations examine the role of self-organization in language evolution, provide some reconsideration on the bottleneck effect during cultural transmission, and shed light on the study of the social structure effects on language evolution.
A Computational Framework to Simulate the Co-evolution of Language and Social Structure

Abstract:In this paper, a multi-agent computational model is pro- posed to simulate the co-evolution of compositional proto-language and social structure from a holistic signal- ing system through iterative interactions within a hetero- geneous population. We implement an indirect meaning transference based on both linguistic and nonlinguistic in- formation in communications, together with a feedback without direct meaning transfer. The emergent social structure, triggered by two locally selective strategies, friendship and popularity, has small-world (Watts 1999) characteristics. The influence of these selective strategies on the emergent language and the emergent social struc- ture are discussed.
Effects of evolutionary linguistics in text classification

Abstract:We perform an empirical study to explore the role of evolutionary linguistics on the text classification problem. We conduct experiments on a real-world collection with more than 100.000 Dutch historical notary acts. The document collection spans over six centuries. During such a large time period some lexical terms modified significantly. Person names, professions and other information changed over time as well. Standard text classification techniques which ignore temporal information of the documents might not produce the most optimal results in our case. Therefore, we analyse the temporal aspects of the corpus. We explore the effect of training and testing the model on different time periods. We use time periods that correspond to the main historical events and also apply clustering techniques in order to create time periods in a data driven way. All experiments show a strong time-dependency of our corpus. Exploiting this dependence, we extend standard classification techniques by combining different models trained on particular time periods and achieve overall accuracy above $$90\\,\\%$$ and macro-average indicators aboveï¾ź63ï¾ź%.

Abstract:Significance Do different aspects of language evolve in different ways? Here, we infer the rates of change in lexical and grammatical data from 81 languages of the Pacific. We show that, in general, grammatical features tend to change faster and have higher amounts of conflicting signal than basic vocabulary. We suggest that subsystems of language show differing patterns of dynamics and propose that modeling this rate variation may allow us to extract more signal, and thus trace language history deeper than has been previously possible.

Abstract:Computational modelling with multi-agent systems is becoming an important technique of studying language evolution. We present a brief introduction into this rapidly developing field, as well as our own contributions that include an analysis of the evolutionary naming-game model. In this model communicating agents, that try to establish a common vocabulary, are equipped with an evolutionarily selected learning ability. Such a coupling of biological and linguistic ingredients results in an abrupt transition: upon a small change of the model control parameter a poorly communicating group of linguistically unskilled agents transforms into almost perfectly communicating group with large learning abilities. Genetic imprinting of the learning abilities proceeds via Baldwin effect: initially unskilled communicating agents learn a language and that creates a niche in which there is an evolutionary pressure for the increase of learning ability. Under the assumption that communication intensity increases continuously with finite speed, the transition is split into several transition-like changes. It shows that the speed of cultural changes, that sets an additional characteristic timescale, might be yet another factor affecting the evolution of language. In our opinion, this model shows that linguistic and biological processes have a strong influence on each other and this effect certainly has contributed to an explosive development of our species.
