Abstract:We conducted a three-year field trial to investigate the efficiency of lime, Ca-Mg-phosphate, sepiolite, lignite, lime mixed with Ca-Mg-phosphate (lime+Ca-Mg-phosphate), sepiolite (lime+sepiolite) and lignite (lime+lignite) to induce Cd immobilisation in a Cd-contaminated acidic paddy soil. Compared with the untreated control soil, treatment with the amendments induced 9.9-91.7%, 27.0-90.0%, and 19.1-83.4% decreases in the soil NH4NO3-extractable Cd for the three tested years, respectively. In contrast, a significant decrease in the soil DTPA-extractable Cd (9.5-23.3%) was only observed in the first year after the applied amendments. Correspondingly, the concentrations of Cd in brown rice were decreased in the lime+sepiolite (34.4 and 33.0%) and lime+Ca-Mg-phosphate (19.9% and 34.1%) treatments for the first and third years, and the sepiolite (37.5%) and lime (20.7%) treatments also decreased the brown rice Cd content in the first year when compared to that of the control. Interestingly, the amendments did not influence the rice grain yield when compared to that of the control. Overall, the results of this study indicated that lime+sepiolite and lime+Ca-Mg-phosphate could be recommended for immobilising Cd in Cd-contaminated acidic paddy soil.
