Abstract:The distribution pattern of aquatic macrophytes is determined by hydrology and water quality. The distribution characteristics of water nutrients and aquatic macrophytes in the ditches of raised field system in Baiyangdian Lake were investigated through field measurements in May and September 2012. The junction of the raised fields and lake surface is set as 0 m to measure the horizontal distance to the water edge. Sixteen plant samples were chosen at intervals of 1 m from -5 m to 5 m and at intervals of 10 m from 10 m to 50 m. Fourteen species of aquatic macrophytes were observed in the ditches of raised fields, accounting for only 40% of the total number of species in Baiyangdian Lake. These species could be divided into three categories depending on the suitable nutrient concentrations for the growth of plants: one group suited to a wide range of water nutrient concentrations, such as Ceratophyllum demersum, Spirodela polyhiza, Hydracharis dubta, Potamo-geton pectinatus, Potamogeton crispus, Salvinia nutans, Nelumbo nucifera and Phragmites australis, another group preferred low nitrogen nutrition, such as Utricularia vulgaris, Myriophyllum spicatum and Lemna trisulca, and the third group could only grow under low nitrogen and phosphorous conditions, such as Potamogeton lu-cens, Potamogeton malaianus and Chara sp. Aquatic macrophytes grew in the different areas in the ditches of raised fields. The difference in the distance to the water edge actually represented the change of the environmental factors, such as water wave, dissolved oxygen and lighting. Potamogeton crispus and Potamogeton pectinatus grew at the outer edge of raised fields where was influenced greatly by the ship, whereas Chara sp. existed inside. Ceratophyllum demersum and floating plants distributed evenly without the influence of water ripples. Species richness was unimodal and the peak presented at the entry point of raised field. Understanding the spatial variations and environmental determinants of aquatic macrophytes in the ditches of raised fields is important for identifying regions where can accumulate biofouling largely and proven useful in the design of raised fields.
