Abstract:There has been remarkable transition in rice planting methods in recent years, including mechanical transplanting and direct seeding. Different planting methods inevitably have different effects on rice growth and development. However, rice growth, nutrient accumulation, heat and light utilization are different under different planting methods. Nitrogen application has been one of the most common field management practices in rice cultivation. Thus a field experiment was conducted to study the characteristics of nitrogen accumulation and utilization in indica hybrid rice under different planting methods and nitrogen rates. A two-factor split-plot designed field experiment was conducted using indica hybrid rice 'F-you-498', a widely planted cultivar in Sichuan Basin. The main plot had three planting methods, including mechanical transplanting (T1), preci-sion hill direct seeding (T2) and manual planting (T3), the subplot was nitrogen (N) fertilizer rate, including 0 kg?hm-2(N0), 90 kg?hm-2(N1), 135 kg?hm-2(N2) and 180 kg?hm-2(N3). Nitrogen accumulation and transfer, yield and yield components, and nitrogen use efficiency under different treatments of the indica hybrid rice were analyzed. The study showed that nitrogen accumulation, transfer, yield and yield components of rice were significantly affected by planting method and N rate. In dif-ferent planting methods, total nitrogen accumulation at heading and maturity stages was in the order of T3> T1> T2. Nitrogen accumulation rate under T2was significantly higher than that under T1and T3from sowing to jointing stage and from heading to maturity stage. However, nitrogen accumulation rate was in the order of T3> T1> T2at jointing to heading stage. Agronomic efficiency of nitrogen and nitrogen harvest index were in the order of T3> T1> T2. The results showed that the order of nitro-gen requirement for 100 kg grains was T2> T3> T1. Grain yield under manual transplanting was significantly higher than that under precision hill direct seeding, but not significantly different from that of mechanical transplanting. Nitrogen accumulation of total plant and panicle increased significantly with increasing nitrogen fertilization rate. However, leaf nitrogen contribution to panicle decreased with increasing nitrogen fertilization rate. Planting method and nitrogen application rate significantly influenced nitrogen use efficiency. Rice agronomic efficiency of nitrogen under mechanical transplanting increased with in-creasing nitrogen fertilization rate, although the increase was insignificant. However, agronomic efficiency of nitrogen under precision hill direct seeding and manual transplanting decreased with increasing nitrogen application. With increasing nitrogen fertilizer rate, the nitrogen apparent recovery efficiency under manual transplanting and mechanical transplanting first increasing then decreasing, while that under precision hill direct seeding gradually decreased. Nitrogen grain production efficiency and nitrogen harvest index decreased with increasing nitrogen fertilization rate, and there was no significant difference among nitrogen fertilizer treatments. In combination with grain yield and nitrogen use efficiency, nitrogen fertilizer rate of 135 kg?hm-2under precision hill direct seeding, and 135-180 kg?hm-2under mechanical transplanting and artificial transplanting not only achieved stable rice yield, but also had high nitrogen use efficiency.

Abstract:The field experiment with different water treatments and management methods,including traditional flooded cultivation(C1),film mulched cultivation(C2) and uncovered cultivation(C3),was conducted to investigate the effects of cultivation model and nitrogen application on grain nutritional quality and phytic acid content for japonica rice,with 3 levels of nitrogen fertilizer(N1,0 kg/hm2;N2,124 kg/hm2;N3,150 kg/hm2) being designed for each water management treatment.The results showed that C3 treatment(uncovered cultivation) had relatively higher total phosphorus content in rice grain,but much more decreasing phytic acid and inorganic phosphorus contents compared with traditional flooded cultivation(C1).For the same nitrogen level,total grain nitrogen and protein components of C3 treatment were lower than those of C2 and C3 treatments,implying that a reasonable fertilizer and water management in paddy production could improve grain nutritional quality,especially increase grain protein contents and decrease grain phytic acids.Additionally,the increasing application of nitrogen fertilizer should cause the remarkably enhancing accumulation of total phosphorus in rice grains.

Abstract:A two-year pot-culture experiment of rice cultivar,II You 838,with alluvial soil from Hubei was conducted to investigate the effects of two water management patterns and four nitrogen(N) fertilizer levels(N 0,126.0,157.5,210.0 kg/ha)on the aerial part biomass,N accumulation,N use efficiency.The results show that the aerial part biomass,N accumulation and N use efficiency of rice are obviously affected by the water management patterns,and the rice grain yield,N accumulation,N agronomic efficiency,N recovery efficiency,partial factor productivity and nitrogen physiological efficiency under the water-logging irrigation pattern are higher than those of the water-controlled irrigation pattern.The biomass and N accumulation of rice aerial parts are increased with the increase of nitrogen level,while the nitrogen agronomic efficiency,partial factor productivity of the applied N and N physiological efficiency are reduced.However,there are no significant differences between the 25% N saving from conventional nitrogen application rate(N 157.5 kg/ha) and the conventional nitrogen application rate(N 210.0 kg/ha).In general,the water-logging irrigation pattern combined with the 25% N saving from conventional nitrogen application rate is recommended as a better water and nitrogen application patterns due to its higher grain yield and nitrogen utilization.

Abstract:The effects of different nitrogen application levels on nutrient uptake and ammonia volatilization were studied with the rice cultivar Zheyou 12 as a material.The accumulative amounts of nitrogen,phosphorus and potassium in rice plants across all growth stages showed a trend to increase with increasing nitrogen application levels from 0 to 270 kg/hm 2,but decreased at nitrogen application levels exceeding 270 kg/hm 2.Moreover,the accumulative uptake of nitrogen,phosphorus and potassium by the rice plants was increased by application of organic manure in combination with 150 kg/hm 2 nitrogen.The nitrogen uptake was high during the jointing to heading stages.Correlation analysis showed that rice yield was positively correlated with the accumulative uptake of nitrogen,phosphorus and potassium by the rice plants.The highest correlation coefficient observed was between the amount of nitrogen uptake and rice yield.The rate and accumulative amounts of ammonia volatilization increased with increasing nitrogen fertilizer application level.Compared with other stages,the rate and accumulative amount of ammonia volatilization were higher after base fertilizer application.The ammonia volatilization rates in response to the nitrogen application levels of 270 kg/hm 2 and 330 kg/hm 2 were much higher than those in the other treatments.The loss of nitrogen through ammonia volatilization accounted for 23.9% of the total applied nitrogen at the nitrogen application level of 330 kg/hm 2.

Abstract:Two rice genotypes(Xiushui 110 and Chunjiang 15) were used to analyze the influence of nitrogen treatments,water management methods and their interaction on grain phytic acid content and protein components by a field experiments of two water treatments,including traditional irrigated cultivation(C1) and dried stress cultivation(C2) with 3 level nitrogen fertilizers(N1,0 kg/ha;N2,100 kg/ha;N3,200 kg/ha) for each water treatment.The results showed that C2 treatment(dried stress cultivation) had relatively higher phytic acid content in rice grain,while the effect of nitrogen treatments on grain phytic acid were water management-dependent,with slight high phytic acid content for 100 kg/ha nitrogen application(N2) and no nitrogen application(N1) relative to high nitrogen treatment(N3) under the condition of traditional irrigated cultivation(C1),but the opposite was true for the effect of N treatment to grain phytic acid when C2 treatment was exposed.The varying contents of grain phytic acid for different water and level nitrogen fertilizers were poorly correlated with grain total protein,4 protein components and rice yielding traits(available panicle per areas,grain number per panicle,1000-grain weight and seed setting rate),although the decreasing yield levels and low grain quality generally occurred at the extremely high application of N fertilizer;The varying extent of phytic acid,total protein contents and 4 protein components in different grains within a panicle was also related to water management and N fertilizer application,with relative high phytic acid for the bottom location grains compared to those located at upper and middle location within a panicle,implying that appropriate water management and N fertilizer application were generally benefit for the reduce of grain phytic acid content except for achieving a high yield level in rice production.

Abstract:Thirty-one japonica cultivars with contrasting agronomic traits were used and 5 nitrogen (N) fertilizer treatments of level and timing were performed to determine the effects of IN application on grain phytic acid and proteins including albumin, globulin, prolamin, and glutelin. Variance analysis showed a large effect of N and a smaller effect of cultivar on grain phytic acid and proteins. With increased N level, grain phytic acid concentrations progressively reduced whereas concentrations of the 4 proteins and ratios of glutelin to total protein increased, indicating that N level has a beneficial effect on rice nutritional quality. In addition, substantial genotypic differences in response of grain phytic acid and proteins to N treatments were detected. Some cultivars such as Xiushui09, Zhendao10, and Yanjing5 exhibited more stability of grain proteins under contrasting N treatments, and the significance of this stability is discussed in regard to its use in rice quality improvement. Effects of Nitrogen Fertilization on Yield and Nitrogen Use Efficiency of Hybrid Rice

Abstract:The effects of different nitrogen applied levels on rice yield and nitrogen utilization were studied in fields of north of Zhejiang Province in order to get the optimal nitrogen application amount.The rice cultivar is hybrid Zheyou 12,and the soil is marine-fluvigenic yellow loamy paddy soil.The results show that yield,nitrogen physiological efficiency(PEN)and recovery efficiency(REN)of rice are at their highest levels under the nitrogen application rate of N 210 kg/ha,and compared with the treatment without nitrogen fertilization,the yield,PEN and REN are increased by 54.4%,34.1 kg/kg and 58.6%,respectively.The nitrogen use efficiency and rice yield are increased under the combined application of organic fertilizer and the nitrogen fertilizer at N 150 kg/ha,and compared with the treatment without nitrogen fertilization,the PEN,REN and yield are increased by 33.1 g/g,50.6% and 61.2%,respectively.In the ecological conditions for the experiment,integrating three factors of rice production,ecological effects and economic benefits,the reasonable amounts of nitrogen application on rice are in the range of N 234.8-241.0 kg/ha,and the corresponding economic and ecological yields are in the range of 9796.4-9801.9 kg/ha.
Effects of Fertilization with Reducing Nitrogen, Controlling Phosphorus and Stabilizing Potassium on Rice Yield and Nutrient Accumulation

Abstract:Excessive application of nitrogen and phosphorus and lower potassium supply not only limit rice growth,but also reduce nutrient use efficiency.In this paper,a field experiment was conducted to study the effects of reducing nitrogen and phosphorus dosages and stabilizing potassium supply on rice yield,nutrient accumulation and fertilizer use efficiency.There were fourteen treatments with two replications.The results indicate that the straw biomass and grain yields of the treatments with integrated N-K,P-K,or N-P-K applications are significantly(P0.05) higher than those of the no fertilizer treatment.The straw biomass of the treatment with less nitrogen and phosphorus and more potassium application(T11,modified treatment,N 225 kg/ha,P2O5 60 kg/ha and K2O 90 kg/ha) is significantly(P0.05) higher than that of the conventional fertilization treatment(CFA,N 300 kg/ha,P2O5 150 kg/ha,K2O 60 kg/ha) and the differences of kernel weight and grain yield between the two treatments are obvious.The nitrogen and potassium contents in shoots at the tillering stage and in straw at the harvest stage,the accumulated nitrogen and potassium amounts in above ground organs at the harvest stage,as well as apparent nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiencies of the modified treatment are significantly(P0.05) higher than those of CFA.These results imply that properly reducing nitrogen and phosphorus dosages,and increasing potassium dosages could catch nitrogen and potassium need of rice plants,increase dry matter accumulation and grain yield,and improve apparent nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiencies.The fertilization scheme of N 196.2 kg/ha,P2O5 46.5 kg/ha and K2O 90 kg/ha should be recommended for practical rice production under local conditions.
Influence of Phosphorus on Rice (oryza Sativa L.) Grain Zinc Bioavailability and Its Relation to Inositol Phosphate Profiles Concentration

Abstract:The hidden hunger caused by grain zinc (Zn) deficiency in crop poses a potential threat to the health of nearly two billion people worldwide, especially in developing countries. In this study, the long-term phosphorus fertilizer experiment and in vitro detached rice panicle culture systems with varied phosphorus levels were conducted to investigate the effect of phosphorus on rice grain Zn bioavailability and its relation of grain inositol phosphates profiles (phytic acid related metabolic derivatives) concentration. In our results, compared with low phosphorus level, high phosphorus supply increased grain phytic acid phosphorus and total phosphorus concentration (mg g–1). Moreover, high phosphorus supply also increased different grain inositol phosphate profile concentrations (InsP1-6), especially for InsP4-6. On the contrary, grain Zn concentration decreased with phosphorus supply. Both the decrement of Zn and increment of phytic acid phosphorus induced by the higher phosphorus supply in rice grain led to the significant decrement of grain Zn bioavailability. In in vitro detached panicle culture system, the Zn bioavailability in P12 treatment decreased by 81.3% relative to P0 treatment. In conclusion, higher phosphorus input could significantly decrease grain Zn bioavailability through increased grain phytic acid phosphorus and inositol phosphates derivatives concentration, in addition to the decrement of grain Zn concentration.
Optimal Nitrogen Application Rates on Rice Grain Yield and Nitrogen Use Efficiency in High,middle and Low-Yield Paddy Fields

Abstract:Effects of different nitrogen application rates on grain yield of rice and nitrogen use efficiency in high, middle and low yield paddy fields in Hubei Province were studied. Field trials were carried out to investigate the optimum N application rate on rice cultivar,Liangyoupeijiu in paddy fields with different yield levels( high,middle and low),and to observe the effect law of different N application rates on rice yield and its components,N fertilization contribution rate,soil N dependent rate and N use efficiency. The results obtained in the 2011 field trial show that both high and middle yield fields have the highest rice grain yields under the treatment of N 180 kg / ha,with 10. 70% and 27. 23% yield increases respectively compared to the treatment of CK,while the highest yield in the low-yield field is acquired under the treatment of N 240 kg / ha,which is 44. 70% higher than that of the CK. Both high and low yield field spots achieve the highest rice grain yields under the treatment of N 180 kg / ha,with 12. 43% and 74. 19% yield increases respectively compared to the treatment of CK in 2012,and the highest yield in middle yield field spot is acquired under the treatment of N 240 kg / ha,which is 28. 80% higher than that of the CK. At some certain range,with the increase of the N application rate,the N agronomic efficiency and N physiological efficiency are increased,while the partial factor productivity is decreased. By the analysis of yield,yield components and N use efficiency,we conclude that the optimum N application rates are N 120-180 kg / ha in high and middle yield fields,and are N 180-240 kg / ha in low-yield fields. The optimum N applicationrate is in order,low yield field middle yield field high yield field.

Abstract:This paper reports the effect of nitrogen on amino acid composition of leaf and grain for japonica rice during the grain filling stage, using pot experiments with three N rate treatments. Dynamic changes of free amino acids (FAA) and protein amino acids (PAA) in leaves and grains were monitored. Results showed that FAA in leaves decreased with the progress of grain filling. FAA in grains increased at first 14 days after anthesis and then decreased to a nearly constant level. PAA in leaves showed a diminishing trend as leaf senesced after anthesis. Conversely, PAA in grain exhibited an increasing trend with the progress of grain filling. N had significantly positive effect on contents of FAA and PAA in leaves and grains. There was no obvious trend of the variation of FAA in leaves and grains with N rates. PAA in leaves was more sensitive to N fertilization. By contrast, PAA in grains was more stable across N rates, especially at the late stage of grain filling. In addition, composition of leaf PAA was different from that of grain, indicating the reconstruction of amino acids during the process of translocation of N compounds from leaves to grains.

Abstract:Development of rice cultivars with low phytic acid (lpa) is considered as a primary strategy for biofortification of zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe). Here, two rice genotypes (XS110 and its lpa mutant) were used to investigate the effect of P supplies on accumulations and distributions of PA, Zn, and Fe in rice grains by using hydroponics and detached panicle culture system. Results showed that higher P level increased grain PA concentration on dry matter basis (g/kg), but it markedly decreased PA accumulation on per grain basis (mg/grain). Meanwhile, more P supply reduced the amounts and bioavailabilities of Zn and Fe both in milled grains and in brown grains. Comparatively, lpa mutant was more susceptive to exogenous P supply than its wild type. Hence, the appropriate P fertilizer application should be highlighted in order to increase grain microelement (Zn and Fe) contents and improve nutritional quality in rice grains.

Abstract:Water and nitrogen availability plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycles of essential elements, such as carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), in agricultural ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the seasonal changes of C, N and P concentrations, accumulation, partitioning, and C:N:P stoichiometric ratios in different plant tissues (root, stem-leaf, and panicle) of late-season rice under two irrigation regimes (continuous flooding, CF; alternate wetting and drying, AWD) and four N managements (control, N0; conventional urea at 240 kg N ha(-1), UREA; controlled-release bulk blending fertilizer at 240 kg N ha(-1), BBF; polymer-coated urea at 240 kg N ha(-1), PCU). We found that water and N treatments had remarkable effects on the measured parameters in different plant tissues after transplanting, but the water and N interactions had insignificant effects. Tissue C:N, N:P and C:P ratios ranged from 14.6 to 52.1, 3.1 to 7.8, and 76.9 to 254.3 over the rice growing seasons, respectively. The root and stem-leaf C:N:P and panicle C:N ratios showed overall uptrends with a peak at harvest whereas the panicle N:P and C:P ratios decreased from filling to harvest. The AWD treatment did not affect the concentrations and accumulation of tissue C and N, but greatly decreased those of P, resulting in enhanced N:P and C:P ratios. N fertilization significantly increased tissue N concentration, slightly enhanced tissue P concentration, but did not affect tissue C concentration, leading to a significant increase in tissue N:P ratio but a decrease in C:N and C:P ratios. Our results suggested that the growth of rice in the Taihu Lake region was co-limited by N and P. These findings broadened our understanding of the responses of plant C:N:P stoichiometry to simultaneous water and N managements in subtropical high-yielding rice systems.

Abstract:While the application rate of nitrogen fertilizer is believed to dramatically influence rice fields and improve the soil conditions in paddy fields, fertilization with low use efficiency and nitrogen loss may cause environmental pollution. In this paper, 15N-labeled urea was used to trace the fate of nitrogen at four rates (0, 75, 225 and 375 kg N/ha) of urea fertilizer over three split applications in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, in 2014. Plant biomass, the soil nitrogen content of different layers, NH3 volatilization and N2O emissions were determined using the 15N abundance to calculate the portion from nitrogen fertilizer. The results indicated that rice yields increased with the application rate of nitrogen fertilizer. NH3 volatilization is the main nitrogen loss pathway, and N2O emissions were significantly associated with nitrogen application rates in the paddy. The percent of nitrogen loss by NH3 volatilization and N2O emissions increased with the nitrogen application rate. This study showed that the suitable N fertilizer in a loam clay paddy, considering the yield requirements and environmental issues, is approximately 225 kg N/ha in Hangzhou, with a distribution of 50.06% of the residual in the rice and soil and 48.77% loss as NH3 volatilization and N2O emissions. The nitrate from fertilization mainly remained in the 0–20 cm level of the topsoil.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) topdressing often leads to a decline in cooking and eating quality due to alterations in grain chemical composition. Investigation into the response of N compounds in grains, such as protein-bound amino acids (PAA), free amino acids (FAA), and other residue N compounds (Nresidue), would be beneficial for understanding the impact of N on rice quality. The present study selected five japonica rice cultivars and conducted a two-year field experiment employing two N fertilization treatments: the CK treatment, where all N fertilizer was applied as basal fertilizer, and the topdressing treatment, where 50% of the total N was applied as topdressing at the panicle initiation stage. Averaging across years and cultivars, N topdressing resulted in a 16.3% increase in PAA and an 8.65% decrease in FAA, with no significant impact on Nresidue. N topdressing resulted in a decrease in the proportion of essential amino acids found in prolamins, as well as a reduction in the proportion of amino acids belonging to the aspartate family and arginine. Significant genotypic variations were observed in the response of nitrogen components to topdressing. Furthermore, elite cultivars with premium quality exhibited greater stability in amylose content compared to protein content.
Effects of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Zinc Supply Levels on Grain Phytic Acid Content and Its Correlation with Several Mineral Nutrients in Rice Grains

Abstract:Effects of N,P and Zn treatments during rice developmental stage on grain phytic acid and its association with several mineral nutrients were studied in a hydroponic experiment with four rice cultivars,including indica cultivar Xieqingzao(XQZ)and its low phytic acid mutant(HIPi1),and japonica cultivar Xiushui 110 and its low phytic acid mutant(HIPj1).The results showed that higher N,P and Zn supply generally resulted in lower grain phytic acid content compared to lower N,P and Zn supply at rice developmental stage,although their sensitivities to P and Zn treatments were dependent on genotypes;N,P and Zn supply had a considerable influence on mineral nutrients accumulation in rice grains,with high N and P supply enhancing Fe concentration,but decreasing Cu accumulation in rice grains,respectively.Compared with low Zn supply,relatively lower grain Fe concentration,but more grain K,Mg accumulation could be found for high Zn treatment;Grain phytic acid was positively correlated with K,Mg,Fe and Cu concentrations in rice grains,but negatively with grain Zn concentration among different solution treatments,despite of their statistically significance varying with cultivars.These implied that the micro-nutritional quality could be synchronously improved by low phytic acid mutation,if an appropriate cultivation method was applied to enhance K,Mg,Fe and Zn concentrations in rice grains.
The Response of Phytic Acid and Its Expression Profiles in Rice (oryza Sativa L.)Grain As Induced by Phosphorus Supply

Abstract:Phytic acid (PA)is the main storage form of phosphorus (P)in cereal grains.However,the relationship between external P supply and grain PA accumulation has not yet been fully understood.Two japonica rice cultivars were used to investigate the effects of phosphorus (P)treatments on grain phytic acid (PA)and its relation to inositol phosphate-related genes expression profiles using a culture of detached panicle of rice (Oryza sativa L.).Results showed that high P level caused a significant increase in grain PA,inorganic P (Pi)and total P contents.However,grain weight and PA content per grain were P concentration-dependent,and decreased under high P treatment (12P).High P supply decreased grain Zn and Fe concentrations,and their bio-availabilities.Moreover,P treatment also influenced all four PA related genes expression (RI NO1 ,ITP5/6 K-6 ,I PK2 and I PK1 ),especially for RI NO1 ,a rate-limiting gene in PA synthesis and highly expressed in rice grains.Specifically,RION1 gene expression was up-regulated at optimum P (3P ) concentration, but was significantly down-regulated under high P treatment (12P ), which corresponded with the variation of grain PA content in rice,suggesting RION1 was a key metabolic gene in PA synthesis with P supply.In contrast,only a slight contribution of I PK2 gene was exhibited in PA synthesis induced by P supply.

Abstract:High nitrogen（N）input features China’s intensive rice production system.To elucidate N and genotype effects on accumulation of macronutrients and micronutrients in grains of japonica rice,and to discuss its significance in rice production,a three-year field experiment involving six japonica rice varieties and seven N treatments were performed.Macronutrients（Ca,Mg,K,and Na）and micronutrients（Cu,Fe,Mn,and Zn）concentrations in brown and milled rice were measured using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer.For macronutrients,no consistently significant effect of N was detected in both brown and milled rice.For micronutrients,N showed significant effect,especially in lowering Zn accumulation in brown and milled rice.In addition,N tended to increase Fe concentration in milled rice.Genotype showed larger effect on distribution of minerals in milled rice than N.The high-yielding variety,Wuyunjing 7,accumulated larger proportion of Mg,K,and Zn in the milled rice as compared with the other five varieties,and could be of value for rice breeding programs aiming at high nutritional quality.The results demonstrated differences in response to N between macronutrients and micronutrients,and are of significance for coping with‘hidden hunger’both in humans and crops through agronomical practices.
Impacts of Nitrogen Fertilizer Rate on Dry Matter Accumulation and Nitrogen Utilization Efficiency in Japonica Rice

Abstract:Field experiments were adopted to study the impacts of three nitrogen fertilizer rates on dry matter accumulation, grain yield, yield components and nitrogen utilization efficiency of japonica rice. The results showed that grain yield, effective panicles and grain number per panicle of japonica rice increased along with increasing nitrogen fertilizer rate, but seed setting percentage and thousand-seed weight decreased. Dry matter accumulation and nitrogen content in each organ and nitrogen accumulation in plant of japonica rice all showed a increasing trend along with increase of nitrogen fertilizer rate in both heading period and mature period. The producing efficiency, absorption efficiency, agricultural utilization rate and partial productivity of nitrogen all decreased with increasing nitrogen fertilizer rate, among which the nitrogen producing efficiency and the nitrogen partial productivity declined more obvious.

Abstract:Purpose Phosphate (P) fertilizers are being widely used to increase crop yield, especially in P-deficient soils. However, repeated applications of P could influence trace element bioaccumulation in crops. The effects of 5-year P enrichment on trace element (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Hg) accumulation in Oryza sativa L. were thus examined.Materials and methods Two paddy soils with different initial P availabilities were amended with and without P fertilizer from 2009 to 2013. Trace elements and P levels in rice and soils were analyzed.Results and discussion In soil initially with limited P, P amendment enhanced grain Pb, As, and Hg concentrations by 1.8, 1.5, and 1.4-fold, respectively, but tended to decrease the grain Cd level by 0.73-fold, as compared to the control. However, in soil initially with sufficient P, P amendment tended to reduce accumulation of all examined elements in rice grain.Conclusions Phosphate amendment in initially P-limited and P-sufficient soils had different effects on trace element availability in soil (as reflected by extractable element) and plant physiology (growth and metal translocation), resulting in contrasting patterns of trace element accumulation in rice between the two types of soils. Our study emphasized the necessity to consider the promoting effects of P on Pb, As, and Hg accumulation in grain in initial P-deprived soil.
