Abstract:Under the background of global climate change, the role of carbon storage in mitigating the increase of atmospheric CO2 concentrations is of paramount importance. However, land use and land cover change (LULC) resulting from urban sprawl disturbs the level and distribution of carbon storage. This study aims to explore the spatiotemporal variability of carbon storage and the correlations between that and urban development for China’s 369 cities in 2000, 2010, and 2020. The InVEST model and several multiple linear regression models are employed and the results show that: (1) Cities in western China sequester a large amount of carbon (maximum greater than 2000 TgC) and only some of them, from 2010 to 2020, can maintain a positive change in carbon storage. The rest of China shows a negative change, but a higher carbon storage per area (maximum greater than 0.01 TgC/km2 in the east). Moran's I shows that such variability has a significant spatial autocorrelation. (2) The intensification of the population, the growth of economy, and urbanization are the main factors influencing carbon storage, which are not only reflected on the national scale but also have different local characteristics in different regions. Cities in China's inland regions (e.g., western, some central, and northeastern China), most of which are developing cities, show more diversified impacts of their urban development on carbon storage. However, in developed cities, mostly concentrated in the eastern region, such impacts and variations show a more unified trend. Considering that environmental policy is often a national action, therefore, to strengthen the carbon sequestration capacity of cities, it is necessary to formulate not only a unified leading policy from the national level but also the practical policies of local governments of cities that match their development stages.
Variation in Carbon Storage and Its Distribution by Stand Age and Forest Type in Boreal and Temperate Forests in Northeastern China

Abstract:The northeastern forest region of China is an important component of total temperate and boreal forests in the northern hemisphere. But how carbon (C) pool size and distribution varies among tree, understory, forest floor and soil components, and across stand ages remains unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we selected three major temperate and two major boreal forest types in northeastern (NE) China. Within both forest zones, we focused on four stand age classes (young, mid-aged, mature and over-mature). Results showed that total C storage was greater in temperate than in boreal forests, and greater in older than in younger stands. Tree biomass C was the main C component, and its contribution to the total forest C storage increased with increasing stand age. It ranged from 27.7% in young to 62.8% in over-mature stands in boreal forests and from 26.5% in young to 72.8% in over-mature stands in temperate forests. Results from both forest zones thus confirm the large biomass C storage capacity of old-growth forests. Tree biomass C was influenced by forest zone, stand age, and forest type. Soil C contribution to total forest C storage ranged from 62.5% in young to 30.1% in over-mature stands in boreal and from 70.1% in young to 26.0% in over-mature in temperate forests. Thus soil C storage is a major C pool in forests of NE China. On the other hand, understory and forest floor C jointly contained less than 13% and <5%, in boreal and temperate forests respectively, and thus play a minor role in total forest C storage in NE China.

Abstract:Accurately estimating the carbon storage of forest ecosystems and deriving the driving factors affecting forest carbon storage are the prerequisites and foundations for promoting the development of global carbon sinks. In order to explore an effective approach for monitoring the carbon sink of forests in developed coastal areas on a large scale, in this paper, Guangdong Province was taken as the case study region; eight periods plots of data of national forest resources continuous inventory were used to estimate the forest carbon storage and carbon density in Guangdong Province from 1979 to 2012; unary linear regression and standard deviation ellipse were used to analyze the dynamic change of carbon storage; and the structural equation model was used to study the driving factors of forest carbon storage. The results showed that: (1) From 1979 to 2012, the forest carbon storage in Guangdong Province increased by 15,087.93 × 104 t, and the forest carbon density increased by 17.66 t/ha. (2) After 2007, the main body of forest carbon storage changed from coniferous species to broadleaf species. (3) From 1979 to 2012, the proportion of young and middle-aged forest carbon storage continued to decline, but it still occupied the dominant component. (4) The forest carbon storage and carbon density in the northern region of Guangdong Province are higher than those in the southern region. (5) Stand factors and environmental factors have a positive effect on forest carbon storage, and understory factors have a negative effect. In conclusion, although forest carbon storage has fluctuated under the influence of forestry policies and human activities, the overall carbon storage and carbon density of Guangdong Province have been increasing. Tree species have become more abundant and the proportion of coniferous forest to broadleaf forest became more rationalized. The forest age group structure is continuously optimized. We also compared our results with that of other provinces in China and other countries with approximate latitude and climatic conditions. The carbon sink potential of Guangdong Province is huge in the future.

Abstract:Spatial–temporal variation in soil organic carbon is an important factor for national targets to mitigate climate change and land degradation impacts. In this research, we took Guangdong Province of China as the study area, evaluated the spatial–temporal distributions of soil organic carbon using data from three China Geochemical Baseline projects (conducted in 2009, 2016, and 2023, respectively), and quantified the main driving factors of spatial–temporal variations in soil organic carbon using the random forest algorithm, further predicting the density and inventories of soil organic carbon. The results demonstrate that the mean value of SOC in Guangdong in 2009 was 0.81%; in 2016 it was 1.13%; and in 2023 it was 1.02%. The inventories of soil organic carbon (0–30 cm) in Guangdong Province were 0.61 Pg in 2009, 0.74 Pg in 2016, and 0.62 Pg in 2023. Soil in Guangdong acted as a carbon sink from 2009 to 2023 as a whole, and the most important driving force behind spatial–temporal variations in soil organic carbon was temperature, followed by precipitation and vegetation cover.

Abstract:This study analysed spatial-temporal dynamics of carbon emissions and carbon sinks in Guangdong Province, South China. The methodology was based on land use/land cover data interpreted from continuous high-resolution satellite images and energy consumption statistics, using carbon emission/sink factor method. The results indicated that: (1) From 2005 to 2013, different land use/land cover types in Guangdong experienced varying degrees of change in area, primarily the expansion of built-up land and shrinkage of forest land and grassland; (2) Total carbon emissions increased sharply, from 76.11 to 140.19 TgC yr-1 at the provincial level, with an average annual growth rate of 10.52%, while vegetation carbon sinks declined slightly, from 54.52 to 53.20 TgC yr-1. Both factors showed significant regional differences, with Pearl River Delta and North Guangdong contributing over 50% to provincial carbon emissions and carbon sinks, respectively; (3) Correlation analysis showed social-economic factors (GDP per capita and permanent resident population) have significant positive impacts on carbon emissions at the provincial and city levels; (4) The relationship between economic growth and carbon emission intensity suggests that carbon emission efficiency in Guangdong improves with economic growth. This study provides new insight for Guangdong to achieve carbon reduction goals and realize low-carbon development.

Abstract:Process mechanisms of carbon storage and carbon cycle in earth system are the scientific foundation for analyzing the cause of climate change, forecasting the climate change trend, and making mitigation and adaptation countermeasures, which have attracted great attention from the scientific community and international community. Since the late 1980s, Chinese scientists have carried out a great deal of research on the terrestrial ecosystem carbon cycle, and have made great progress in many fields. In this paper, we review the history of the research on the terrestrial carbon cycle in China, summarize the results of the carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems and its spatial patterns, evaluate the uncertainties of the research, and put forward important scientific issues which are needed to be addressed urgently. Overall, the research on the carbon cycle of terrestrial ecosystems in China consists of four stages of development, i.e., the early carbon cycle research, the comprehensive study on the carbon cycle at regional scale, the experimental research on the adaptation of ecosystem carbon cycle to climate change, and the coupling cycles of C-N-H2O and the regional regulation and control. Most studies indicate that carbon storage of terrestrial ecosystems in China and its spatial pattern are controlled by temperature and precipitation. About 97.95–118.93 Pg carbon is stored in soil, forest and grassland in China. Since the mid 1970s, many management measures such as afforestation and forest management, grassland protection, farming system reformation and conservation tillage, have played important roles in carbon sequestration. However, large uncertainty exists among the evaluation results with various methods. In the future we should focus on the integrated monitoring system of the dynamics of carbon storage and carbon sink, foresight studies on the coupling cycles of ecosystem C-N-H2O and its regional regulation and control, quantitative assessment on the carbon budget and the potential of carbon sink of ecosystems in China, the evaluation of the economic benefit of various technologies for increasing carbon sink of typical ecosystems, and the measurable, reportable and verifiable scientific data and technical supports for establishing the policy framework of greenhouse gas management and carbon trading at national scale.

Abstract:Ecological service forest (ESF) is established to maintain ecological processes and protect the environment. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the contribution of these forests to regional carbon storage and explore their carbon sequestration potential after ecosystem restoration. We sampled 149 stands from 6 to 41 years old, covering 101,800km2, in Zhejiang Province, in China's eastern subtropical zone. The samples included four types of ESF: evergreen broad-leaved forest, coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest, pine (Pinus massoniana) forest, and Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) forest. The mean values of biomass in evergreen broad-leaved forest, coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest, pine forest, and Chinese fir forest were 89.19, 70.06, 51.25, and 54.15tha−1, respectively. The NPP for the four types of ESF ranged from 4.41 to 8.35tha−1year−1. Carbon densities for the four types of ESF were lower than the mean values (36–57.07tCha−1) for China because the ESFs are relatively young in Zhejiang Province. Overall, biomass, litter production, NPP, and carbon density were all significantly lower in pine forest and Chinese fir forest than in evergreen broad-leaved forest, whereas the values for the coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest were intermediate. These results suggest that the evergreen broad-leaved forest has great potential for offsetting CO2 emissions, and that promoting succession from coniferous forests to evergreen broad-leaved forest can enhance carbon sinks in the forests of subtropical China. The next 50 years (as these forests mature) will represent an important period to enhance the carbon sink in Zhejiang Province.
Spatial-temporal patterns and evolution of carbon storage in China's terrestrial ecosystems from 1980 to 2020

Abstract:Analyzing the changes in carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems caused by land use changes is a crucial part of exploring the carbon cycle. In addition, enhancing carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems is an effective and environmentally friendly measure to sequester anthropogenic carbon emissions, which is significant for achieving carbon neutrality and curbing global climate change. This paper uses land use data and carbon density tables with the InVEST model to obtain a carbon storage distribution map of China. It further applies land use response elasticity coefficients, Theil index multi-stage nested decomposition, and spatial autocorrelation analysis to examine the spatial-temporal patterns, causes of changes, and evolution characteristics of carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems from 1980 to 2020. The results show that the temporal changes in China's carbon storage generally present an inverted S-curve, with an initial rapid decline followed by a slower decrease. Spatially, it features high levels in the northeast, low levels in the northwest, and a uniform distribution in the central and southern regions. The disturbance of land use type changes on terrestrial ecosystem carbon storage has been effectively mitigated. The significant reduction in grassland area in the Southwest region is the main source of carbon storage loss during the study period, and the encroachment of construction land on arable land in large urban agglomerations is one of the important causes of carbon storage loss. The Theil index multi-stage nested decomposition results indicate that the overall difference in carbon storage in China has decreased, while differences among cities within provinces and among counties within cities have increased. The influence of natural factors on the distribution of carbon storage is weakening, whereas the impact of human activities is becoming more profound, enhancing its influence on the spatial distribution of carbon storage in China. From 1980 to 2000, the carbon density in coastal metropolises generally showed a declining trend. From 2000 to 2020, the carbon density in the central urban areas of eastern coastal city clusters gradually showed an upward trend and continued to expand outward, revealing to some extent the "Environmental Kuznets Curve" characteristic in the development process of urban carbon storage. Therefore, in future ecological construction, the government should fully consider the impact of land management planning on carbon storage in different regions, promote the efficient use and standardized management of land, and strive to cross the "Environmental Kuznets Curve" inflection point of carbon storage as soon as possible.

Recovery of forest carbon density and carbon storage in a soil-degraded landscape in southeastern China

Abstract:Adaptive managements on susceptible forested regions not only benefit forest recovery, but also help to improve the stability of soil-degraded area and carbon (C) sequestration. The gain of afforestation on C sink has not been addressed clearly especially in tropical and subtropical regions that will be critical in an era of global warming. Based on the Landsat satellite images, in situ forest survey and archives, we analyzed the spatiotemporal patterns of C density and storage in a typical soil–water conservation area in Changting county in southeastern China, dominated by the pioneer tree Pinus massoniana forest. The results showed that the C density (storage) increased significantly from 20.14 Mg C ha−1 (0.38 Tg C) in 1981 to 43.57 Mg C ha−1 (1.98 Tg C) in 2015 (p < 0.05) and proved the success of ecological management adopted considering the interactions between local residential livelihoods and the features of local forest ecosystem. In addition, the differences of C density and storage across elevational and slope gradients also narrowed over the past 35 years. The landscape also gradually shifted from lower C density to higher C density conditions based on the landscape metrics. The ecological-dominated approaches should be put in a high priority for the issue of C sequestration especially in a changing climate.

Abstract:Understanding the dynamics and underlying mechanism of carbon exchange between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere is one of the key issues in global change research. In this study, we quantified the carbon fluxes in different terrestrial ecosystems in China, and analyzed their spatial variation and environmental drivers based on the long-term observation data of ChinaFLUX sites and the published data from other flux sites in China. The results indicate that gross ecosystem productivity (GEP), ecosystem respiration (ER), and net ecosystem productivity (NEP) of terrestrial ecosystems in China showed a significantly latitudinal pattern, declining linearly with the increase of latitude. However, GEP, ER, and NEP did not present a clear longitudinal pattern. The carbon sink functional areas of terrestrial ecosystems in China were mainly located in the subtropical and temperate forests, coastal wetlands in eastern China, the temperate meadow steppe in the northeast China, and the alpine meadow in eastern edge of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. The forest ecosystems had stronger carbon sink than grassland ecosystems. The spatial patterns of GEP and ER in China were mainly determined by mean annual precipitation (MAP) and mean annual temperature (MAT), whereas the spatial variation in NEP was largely explained by MAT. The combined effects of MAT and MAP explained 79%, 62%, and 66% of the spatial variations in GEP, ER, and NEP, respectively. The GEP, ER, and NEP in different ecosystems in China exhibited positive coupling correlation in their spatial patterns. Both ER and NEP were significantly correlated with GEP, with 68% of the per-unit GEP contributed to ER and 29% to NEP. MAT and MAP affected the spatial patterns of ER and NEP mainly by their direct effects on the spatial pattern of GEP.
Dynamic Simulation of Land Use/Cover Change and Assessment of Forest Ecosystem Carbon Storage under Climate Change Scenarios in Guangdong Province, China

Abstract:Exploring the spatial distribution of land use/cover change (LUCC) and ecosystem carbon storage under future climate change scenarios can provide the scientific basis for optimizing land resource redistribution and formulating policies for sustainable socioeconomic development. We proposed a framework that integrates the patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model and integrated valuation of ecosystem services and tradeoffs (InVEST) model to assess the spatiotemporal dynamic changes in LUCC and ecosystem carbon storage in Guangdong based on shared socioeconomic pathways and representative concentration pathways (SSP-RCP) scenarios provided by the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6). The future simulation results showed that the distribution patterns of LUCC were similar under SSP126 and SSP245 scenarios, but the artificial surface expanded more rapidly, and the increase in forest land slowed down under the SPP245 scenario. Conversely, under the SSP585 scenario, the sharply expanded artificial surface resulted in a continuous decrease in forest land. Under the three scenarios, population, elevation, temperature, and distance to water were the highest contributing driving factors for the growth of cultivated land, forest land, grassland, and artificial surface, respectively. By 2060, the carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems increased from 240.89 Tg in 2020 to 247.16 Tg and 243.54 Tg under SSP126 and SSP245 scenarios, respectively, of which forest ecosystem carbon storage increased by 17.65 Tg and 15.34 Tg, respectively; while it decreased to 226.54 Tg under the SSP585 scenario, and the decreased carbon storage due to forest destruction accounted for 81.05% of the total decreased carbon storage. Overall, an important recommendation from this study is that ecosystem carbon storage can be increased by controlling population and economic growth, and balancing urban expansion and ecological conservation, as well as increasing forest land area.

Abstract:China's forests act as a large carbon sink and play a vital role in achieving the carbon neutrality goal by the 2060s. To achieve this goal, the magnitude and spatial patterns of forest carbon sinks must be accurately quantified. In this study, we aim to provide the longest estimate of forest biomass carbon storage and sinks in China at a 1 km spatial resolution from 1990 to 2021 by merging long-term observations from optical and microwave remote sensing datasets with a field-validated benchmark map. We explored the spatial characteristics of aboveground biomass (AGB) and belowground biomass (BGB) carbon in China's forests, as well as variations in AGB carbon sinks. The average AGB and BGB carbon storage from 1990 to 2021 in China's forests were 8.42 ± 0.96 Pg C and 1.9 ± 0.21 Pg C, respectively. The average annual AGB carbon sink during this period was approximately 0.083 ± 0.023 Pg C yr−1. Forests in the southwest region contributed 31.15% of the forest AGB carbon sink in China and contributed 41.01% of the forest AGB carbon storage. Our study presents an effective tool for assessing changes in forest biomass carbon by leveraging comprehensive multi-source remote sensing data and highlights the importance of obtaining large-scale, high-quality, consistent, and accessible plot survey data to validate the earth observation of biomass.

A Study on the Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Land Cover Change and Carbon Storage in the Northern Gulf Economic Zone of Guangxi Based on the InVEST Model

Abstract:In recent years, the international community has increasingly focused on the "dual carbon" issue, as human-induced land use changes significantly impact ecosystem structure and carbon cycling. This study analyzes land use changes in the economic zone of the northern Gulf of Guangxi from 1980 to 2020, utilizing the InVEST model to simulate spatiotemporal changes in carbon storage and conducting zoning studies through spatial analysis. The findings reveal that 1 forest land and arable land dominate the northern Gulf of Guangxi's land use, with notable changes observed in forest land, unused land, and construction land areas. Forest land and construction land have increased by 1761.5 km2 and 1001.19 km2, respectively, while unused land has decreased by 1881.18 km2 from 2000 to 2020. 2 The total carbon storage values in the northern Gulf of Guangxi in 1980, 2000, and 2020 were, respectively, 504.91 × 106/t, 487.29 × 106/t, and 500.31 × 106/t, with the expansion of construction land and conversion of forest land being the main reasons for the decrease in carbon storage. 3 In the northern Gulf of Guangxi, there is a slight upward trend in total carbon storage values over time. Spatially, higher carbon storage values are observed in mountainous and hilly areas at high altitudes, while the central and southern coastal areas exhibit lower carbon storage values. 4 The local spatial autocorrelation results reveal that Pu Bei County exhibits high–high clustering of carbon storage, while He Pu County undergoes a transition from high–low to low–low clustering, and several other administrative areas in Beihai demonstrates low–low clustering. Due to the imperative of economic development, the expansion of urban construction land encroaches upon ecological land, resulting in a decline in carbon storage. Therefore, in the Northern Gulf of Guangxi, it is essential to implement measures such as reforestation and establish ecological protection areas such as forests, grasslands, and wetlands to develop effective carbon sequestration methods and compensate for the carbon loss caused by the expansion of construction land.

Abstract:The carbon sequestration of forest ecosystems plays a pivotal role in constraining global warming and mitigating climate change. The landscape pattern of forests is being altered due to the combined effects of climate change and human interference. Furthermore, the relationship between forest pattern changes and carbon storage distribution in a long time series remains unclear. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the relationship between forest patterns and carbon density, investigating the variations and similarities in the changes in carbon density across different modes of pattern change over time, and suggestions for forest planning were provided from a perspective focused on pattern change to enhance carbon storage. The Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform's random forest model was used to map the spatial distribution of forests in Hunan Province for 1996 and 2020, followed by analyzing the correlation between the changes in forest patterns using the morphological spatial pattern analysis (MSPA) and carbon density simulated by the model. Results show that the net growth rate ((area in 2020-area in 1996)/area in 2020) of the forest in Hunan increased 26.76% between 1996 and 2020. The importance scores for the decade average temperature, short-wave length infrared band 1 (SWIR-1), and slope were the highest metrics in the model of carbon density, and were 0.127, 0.107 and 0.089, respectively. The vegetation carbon storage in Hunan Province increased by 31.02 Tg, from 545.91 Tg to 576.93 Tg in 25 years. This study demonstrates that vegetation carbon storage is influenced by the pattern type in both newly established and pre-existing forests (p < 0.05). The findings of this study offer empirical evidence to support forest management strategies targeted at enhancing carbon sequestration.

Spatial-temporal variations of carbon storage and carbon sequestration rate in China's national forest parks

Abstract:Forests play an important role in regulating climate change and maintaining carbon balance. To explore the carbon storage and carbon sequestration rate of national forest parks is of great significance for carbon sequestration capacity assessment and sustainable forest management. A process-based ecosystem model (CEVSA2 model) was used to simulate the spatial distribution of carbon density, carbon storage and carbon sequestration rate of 881 national forest parks in China during 1982-2017. The results showed that the average carbon density of national forest parks was 255.18 t C·hm-2, being higher than the average carbon density of forest ecosystem in China. In 2017, the total carbon storage of national forest parks increased to 3.56 Pg C, accounting for 11.0%-12.2% of the total carbon storage in national forest ecosystems. During 1982-2017, the average carbon sequestration rate of national forest parks reached 0.45 t C·hm-2·a-1, and the carbon sequestration rate of all national forest parks was above 0.30 t C·hm-2·a-1. National forest parks in the northeast and southwest of China had the highest total carbon storage. The national forest parks in northeast of China had the highest soil organic carbon sequestration rate, while those in eastern China and central southern China had the highest biomass carbon sequestration rate. The area of national forest parks accounted for 5.8% of the total forest area of China, playing an important role in forest carbon sink management of China. Accurate assessment of the growth status, carbon sequestration potential and carbon absorption characteristics of national forest parks could provide reference for the comprehensive assessment of ecosystem service of forest parks in China.

Abstract:Top-down emission reduction target setting results in inability of local governments to develop differentiated plans for emission reduction. Forests have received considerable attention as an important source of carbon sequestration, especially following China's commitment to carbon neutrality. However, studies have paid little attention to spatiotemporal differences of downscale forest carbon sequestration in China over the long term due to data limitations, while also ignoring the large differences in forest carbon sequestration per unit area among different regions. Here, a basic dataset of forest carbon sequestration among counties and grids in China is constructed and the temporal drivers and spatial differences of forest carbon sequestration were investigated from the perspectives of counties' administrative boundaries and 0.5 by 0.5 degree grid combining modelling, GIS spatial analysis and a decomposition method. Changes in forest land use between 2000 and 2020 were also analysed. The results highlight the importance of forests in managing carbon sequestration among all types of terrestrial vegetation and the differences in forest carbon sequestration per unit area. The scale effect increased forest carbon sequestration in the first two periods (2000-2005 and 2005-2010), followed by a decrease since 2010. The intensity effect promoted carbon sequestration; in particular, a dramatic increase was observed from the second (2005-2010) to the third period (2010-2015). The heterogeneity of the scale effect of forest carbon sequestration increased compared to that of the intensity effect, both from administrative and geographical divisions. The scale and intensity effects of counties located in the northern regions of northeast China enhanced forest carbon sequestration, while counties located in southern and central China inhibited it during the study period. The scale effect of grids changed from enhanced to inhibited forest carbon sequestration mainly in northeast China near 120 degrees E, whereas the intensity effect of grids increased from inland regions in central China to eastern coastal regions during the study period. This study provides references for policymakers to set differentiated emission reduction targets considering the local forest carbon sequestration.

Abstract:Carbon storage is an important component of ecosystem services. Under climate warming and human activities, land use/land cover (LULC) have been undergoing tremendous change, leading to spatio-temporal variations in carbon storage. Based on seven series of LULC data and combined with carbon module of Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) model, spatial-temporal changes in LULC types and carbon storage were analyzed and estimated for Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China. Results show varied carbon storage among different types of LULC. Forest and cropland are the dominant LULC types in Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China, accounting for 46–49% (20.90 × 10 4 –22.12 × 10 4 km 2 ) and 30–37% (13.56 × 10 4 –16.70 × 10 4 km 2 ) of the total area. Areal extents of forest, grassland, and unused land declined from 1980 to 2015, by 1.22, 0.84, and 1.11 × 10 4 km 2 , respectively; while those of cropland and construction land expanded, by 3.14 and 0.08 × 10 4 km 2 , respectively. From 1980 to 2015, carbon storage displayed consistent change trends with those of LULC types: carbon storage of forest, grassland, and unused land decreased by 236.22, 116.61 and 21.82 × 10 6 Mg C, respectively; and those of cropland and construction land increased by 414.65 and 0.99 × 10 6 Mg C, respectively. The total carbon storage in the study region was 6,863.06 × 10 6 –6,907.64 × 10 6 Mg C, for which the forest, cropland, and grassland were the major contributor (6,778.75 × 10 6 –6,840.57 × 10 6 Mg C). Due to the conversion of large extents of forest, grassland, and unused land to cropland, which facilitated the formation of carbon sinks and thus enlarged the carbon storage by 45.36 × 10 6 Mg C from 1980 to 2015. Frequent forest fires, urban expansion, farmland reclamation, and engineering construction were the important factors of changes in the LULC, accelerating permafrost degradation and leading to obvious changes in the total carbon storage in the Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China. Therefore, the estimation of carbon storage in different LULC types can provide important data support and have important implications for evaluation of ecosystem services and carbon cycle.

Abstract:Abstract The dynamic change of forest carbon storage can be monitored by remote sensing technology because the change of vegetation index can reflect the dynamic change of forest carbon storage based on the remote sensing images. Combined with remote sensing estimation model of vegetation and soil carbon storage based on the remote sensing classification area data of subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest in 2015, the vegetation and soil carbon storage and carbon density of subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest in Jiangxi province from 1985 to 2015 was estimated by using the remote sensing image data of Jiangxi province from 1985 to 2015. The results showed that the carbon storage and carbon density of subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest in Jiangxi province had shown an overall increasing trend from 1985 to 2015. The carbon storage of vegetation had increased from 0.1254 GtC in 1985 to 0.2092GtC in 2015, and the carbon density of vegetation had increased from 63.071t/hm 2 in 1985 to 76.31 t/hm 2 in 2015. The soil carbon storage had increased from 0.3820 GtC in 1985 to 0.5474 GtC in 2015, and the soil carbon density had increased from 185.99 t/hm 2 in 1985 to 199.69 t/hm 2 in 2015. At the same time, the change trend of carbon storage in subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forests in Jiangxi province from 2020 to 2035 was predicted. The vegetation carbon storage will achieve 0.2774GtC, 0.2969GtC, 0.3164GtC and 0.3359GtC in 2020, 2025, 2030 and 2035 respectively. The soil carbon storage will achieve 0.5020GtC in 2020, 0.5335GtC in 2025, 0.5650GtC in 2030 and 0.5965GtC in 2035 respectively.

Abstract:Capacity of carbon sequestration in forest ecosystem largely depends on the trend of net primary production (NPP) and the length of ecosystem carbon residence time. Retrieving spatial patterns of ecosystem carbon residence time is important and necessary for accurately predicting regional carbon cycles in the future. In this study, a data-model fusion method that combined a process-based regional carbon model (TECO-R) with various ground-based ecosystem observations (NPP, biomass, and soil organic carbon) and auxiliary data sets (NDVI, meteorological data, and maps of vegetation and soil texture) was applied to estimate spatial patterns of ecosystem carbon residence time in Chinese forests at steady state. In the data-model fusion, the genetic algorithm was used to estimate the optimal model parameters related with the ecosystem carbon residence time by minimizing total deviation between modeled and observed values. The results indicated that data-model fusion technology could effectively retrieve model parameters and simulate carbon cycling processes for Chinese forest ecosystems. The estimated carbon residence times were highly heterogenous over China, with most of regions having values between 24 and 70 years. The deciduous needleleaf forest and the evergreen needleleaf forest had the highest averaged carbon residence times (73.8 and 71.3 years, respectively), the mixed forest and the deciduous broadleaf forest had moderate values (38.1 and 37.3 years, respectively), and the evergreen broadleaf forest had the lowest value (31.7 years). The averaged carbon residence time of forest ecosystems in China was 57.8 years.

Abstract:AbstractChina’s extensive planted forests play a crucial role in carbon storage, vital for climate change mitigation. However, the complex spatiotemporal dynamics of China’s planted forest area and its carbon storage remain uncaptured. Here we reveal such changes in China’s planted forests from 1990 to 2020 using satellite and field data. Results show a doubling of planted forest area, a trend that intensified post-2000. These changes lead to China’s planted forest carbon storage increasing from 675.6 ± 12.5 Tg C in 1990 to 1,873.1 ± 16.2 Tg C in 2020, with an average rate of ~ 40 Tg C yr−1. The area expansion of planted forests contributed ~ 53% (637.2 ± 5.4 Tg C) of the total above increased carbon storage in planted forests compared with planted forest growth. This proactive policy-driven expansion of planted forests has catalyzed a swift increase in carbon storage, aligning with China’s Carbon Neutrality Target for 2060.
