Abstract:Surface of Y3Al5O12 : Ce3+ Phosphor was modified by wet etching in 40% NH4F+CH3COOH (1:1) solution for 5 h. SEM results show that smooth surface of phosphor particles turn rough, and edge angles are less sharp as before. PL determinations indicate that backscattering loss of the excited light reduces by 3.9% and emission power is enhanced by 10.7%. Meanwhile, after the surface modification, YAG phosphor presents a lower temperature decay rate of 1.2% at 373 K, which is well explained by the configurational coordinate diagram. Therefore, this method can greatly enhance the efficient of light conversion, extraction and stabilization of pc-LED.

Abstract:The surface of Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor prepared by solid-state reaction was modified by hydrofluoric acid wet etching. The SEM pictures show that the edge-angles-rich surface of the phosphor particles becomes smooth and the XRD spectra show that the surface crystallinity is improved after modification for more than 3h. Consequently, the photoluminescence emission from phosphor particles with smooth surface presents a higher quantum yield (increased by 5.5%) than that without modification, and a lower backscattering light by the smoothed phosphor particles is also found, which suggests better surface characteristics of light absorption, transparency and crystallinity.
Surface Characteristics of Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ Phosphor with Greatly Enhanced Photoluminescence after Chemical Defect-Selective Etching

Abstract:The surface of a commercial Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor was modified by 99% NH4F+CH3COOH solution in a supersonic bath with water temperature of 80°C for 4 h. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the edge angles were not as sharp as the unmodified particles and the flat surfaces turned rough with many micro-structures covered. Positron lifetime measurements quantitatively showed that surface defects were removed away by more than 50%. As a result, the photoluminescence determinations showed that the backscatter loss was reduced by 4.2% and the emission power was enhanced by 5.6% after the surface modification. The conversion efficiency was greatly improved from 47.3% to 51.1%, as presented by the fluorescence images. Therefore, it would be greatly helpful for the improvement of efficiency, transparency and stability of pc-LED. Moreover, this method was significantly suitable for mass production due to its easy operation and low cost.
Enhancing the Luminescent Efficiency of Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ by Coating Graphitic Carbon Nitride: Toward White Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Achieving highly efficient Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor is desirable to fabricate bright white light-emitting diodes (wLED). Designing a synergistic effect of energy transfer from the guest materials to the host Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ is expected to favor the higher quantum efficiency of Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor. Here, we report a novel strategy to enhance the emission intensity and quantum efficiency of Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor by coating a thin g-C3N4 layer on the surface of Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ particles. Melamine was coated on the surface of Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ and heated at 580 degrees C to develop the g-C3N4 layer. The phase, microstructure, photoluminescent properties and thermal stability are investigated in detail. It is demonstrated that g-C(3)N(4)( )coated Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ has been successfully achieved, which shows higher emission intensity and quantum efficiency than the uncoated sample. This is due to the strong excitation energy absorption of g-C3N4, which is then transferred to luminescent Ce3+ ions. The synergistic effect of g-C3N4 coating-host materials shows potential applications to improve the quantum efficiency of other phosphors. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Optimization of Ce 3+ concentration and Y 4 MgSi 3 O 13 phase in Mg 2+ ‐Si 4+ Co‐doped Ce: YAG ceramic phosphors

Abstract:As a promising replacement for nitride red phosphors, Ce: Y3(Mg1.8Al1.4Si1.8)O12(Ce: YMASG) ceramic phosphors have attracted significant attention recently for their advantages in inorganic encapsulation and massive red‐shifting of Ce3+ emission. In this work, Ce: YMASG with different doping concentrations of Ce3+ and Al2O3, was fabricated by vacuum sintering to investigate its effects on the elimination of the impurity phase and the enhancement of the luminescent properties of white light‐emitting diodes (w‐LEDs). It was discovered that the emission wavelength redshifts from 592 nm to 606 nm as the Ce3+ concentration increases, while at 450 K, the emission intensity deteriorates from 0.47 to 0.36 of its initial value. The Rietveld analysis revealed the presence of an impurity phase of Y4MgSi3O13 with a concentration of 17.021 wt% in Ce: YMASG. With the introduction of Al2O3, the impurity phase was eliminated from the matrix completely, the emission peak shifted to a shorter wavelength, and the thermal stability was greatly improved. When the correlated color temperature was controlled at around 3000 K in the packaged w‐LEDs, the commission international de l'éclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates shifted toward the bottom left corner of the diagram with increasing concentration of Ce3+. Conversely, the luminous efficiency (LE) increased from 36 lm/W to 58.6 lm/W as the concentration of Al2O3 increased from 0 to 10 wt%, which demonstrated the application prospect of the fabricated phosphor in warm w‐LEDs.

Abstract:YxAl5O12∶Ce3+ phosphors have been synthesized by co-precipitation method.The crystalline structure,morphology and luminescence properties of YxAl5O12∶Ce3+ phosphors have been investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD),Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) and fluorescence spectrophotometer.The results show that the emission wavelengths of as-prepared phosphors display red-shift at first and then blue-shift appears with the molar of Y3+ increasing from 2.64 to 3.06.The emission intensity increases slowly with the mole of Y3+ increasing from 2.64 to 2.88,but the intensity decreases sharply with different Y3+ content when it was beyond 2.94.The maximum emission wavelength(λem=537 nm) at the maximum intensity appears when x is 2.88.The impure phase-Al2O3 appears when the content of Y3+ is below 2.64.When the mole of Y3+exceeds 3.06,the impure phase-YAM appears,which has negative effects on the luminescence property of as-prepared phosphors.When the molar ratio of yttrium rises from 2.76 to 2.88,the powder is observed with high crystalline and easy dispersion.
Improving the CRI of Al2O3-YAG:Ce eutectic for high-power white LEDs applications: Energy-transfer and co-luminescence

Abstract:Al2O3–Y3Al5O12:Ce (Al2O3-YAG:Ce) eutectic with weak attenuation at high temperature has a wide range of applications in high-power white light solid-state lighting. However, the general color rendering index (general CRI, Ra, the average value of R1-R8) of phosphor-converted white light-emitting diode (Pc-WLED) based on this material is usually no higher than 70 (CCT < 6500 K). We grew Al2O3-YAG eutectics doped with three ions of Ce3+, Pr3+, and Cr3+ by the micro pulling-down (μ-PD) method to improve the Ra through the co-luminescence and energy-transfer. The co-luminescence and energy-transfer were analyzed by the excitation-emission spectrum and the spectral power distribution. Results show that the energy-transfer between Ce3+ and Pr3+ ions in Al2O3-YAG:Ce, Pr occurs with each other, visibly enhancing the emission at around 610 nm and 694 nm, increases the Ra by 8.4 compared to Al2O3-YAG:Ce. Moreover, the Ra of the Al2O3-YAG:Ce and Al2O3-YAG:Cr stacked Pc-WLED increases by 20.4 compared to Al2O3-YAG:Ce, reaching 78.7. In addition, (R9, the special CRI for strong red, is 59.). In addition, the annealed (H2) single-doped eutectics have little change compared to unannealed ones in luminescence, but the co-doped ones with multiple ions have a significant change. Significantly, the luminous efficiency of Al2O3-YAG:Ce after annealing is only increased by 4%, while that of Al2O3-YAG:Ce, Pr is increased by 13%. These studies show that the CRI of Pc-WLED base on Al2O3-YAG:Ce eutectic can be improved by ion co-doping in eutectic or superposition of Al2O3-YAG eutectic doped with other ions.

Abstract:Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ (YAG:Ce3+) phosphors were prepared via molten salt synthesis (MSS) using Y2O3, CeO2 and γ-/α-Al2O3 as the starting materials and a eutectic mixture of NaCl–KCl–LiF as the flux. The phase and crystallinity of the prepared samples, as determined by X-ray diffraction analysis, indicated the formation of a pure cubic garnet phase when calcined at 1200°C for 5h. Further investigation of the effects of calcination temperature and flux concentration on the crystallinity, microstructure, dispersibility, and luminescent properties of YAG:Ce3+ phosphors revealed that the emission intensity of phosphors prepared using a γ-Al2O3 precursor is stronger than that of phosphors obtained using a α-Al2O3 precursor.

Abstract:In this paper, facile synthesis of CaAlSiN3: Ce3+ yellow-emitting phosphors under atmospheric pressure at a moderate temperature and their photoluminescent properties are reported. The prepared CaAlSiN3: Ce3+ phosphors exhibit a broad yellow emission band positioned at 580 nm and covering a bandwidth of 150 nm. The thermal stability of CaAlSiN3: Ce3+ phosphors shows obvious superiority than the commercial YAG: Ce3+ phosphor, indicating its promising application prospect in power LEDs. In addition, the enhancement of red-light component for CaAlSiN3: Ce3+ phosphor is demonstrated by co-doping Eu2+ ions. This study offers a facile route to prepare CaAlSiN3: Ce3+ yellow-emitting phosphors, which may be used as a promising candidate for high performance white LEDs.
Red-Shifted Emission in Y3MgSiAl3O12:Ce3+ Garnet Phosphor for Blue Light-Pumped White Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:It is highly desirable to red shift the emission of Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor to obtain a warmer correlated color temperature (CCT) in applications for blue light pumped white-light emitting diodes (w-LEDs) with high color rendering index (CRI). In this paper, we report the red-shifted emission of Y3MgSiAl3O12:Ce3+ garnet phosphor for w-LEDs through a chemical unit cosubstituting in a solid solution design strategy. The fabrication temperature of the Y3MgSiAl(3)O(12):Ce3+ powder was optimized at 1600 degrees C, and its structure, photoluminescence property, micromorphology, decay curve, quantum yield, as well as the thermal stability of the samples are investigated in detail. The as-prepared Y3MgSiAl3O12:Ce3+ phosphors display a broad excitation band ranging from 300 to 520 nm (centered at 450 nm) and present an intense Ce3+ 5d-4f emission band in the yellow light region (lambda(em) = 564 nm, obviously red-shifteaway from Y3Al5O12:Ce-3). This can be explained by the increase of the crystal-field splitting in the Ce3+ 5d levels owing to the chemical unit cosubstitution of Al3+(I) and Al3+(II) ions by Mg2+ and Si' ions. The quantum yield of the Y2.92MgSiAl3O12:0.08Ce(3+) phosphor is measured as 61.8%. Further investigation on a lamp packaged w-LEDs combining 12:0.08Ce(3+) Y2.92MgSiAl3O12:0.08Ce(3+) phosphors on a blue InGaN chip shows it to exhibits a lower CCT and higher CRI compared to those of the commercial Y3Al5O12:Ce3+-based devices, indicating their appealing strengths for potential applications in w-LEDs.
Performance optimization of Ce:YAG sapphire films for high power density white laser-driven lighting applications

Abstract:To withstand higher power density (PD), exhibit higher luminous efficiency (LE), use in smaller size and lower cost has become the direction of solid-state lighting technology. In the face of high-density laser irradiation and strong thermal shock, improving the performance of color conversion materials related to laser illumination has become a research hotspot. In this study, The Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ phosphor-in-glass film (Ce:YAG-PiF) was obtained by scraping method. The optimized Ce: YAG-PiF external quantum efficiency (EQE) reaches 74.7%, closing to the phosphor (EQE = 78.47%). Excitingly, at 573 K, the thermal conductivity of sample remains at 9.47 W m −1 K −1 . Besides, the sample has an ultra-high LE of 256 lm/W @ 32.47 W/mm 2 . After recombining with the red phosphor CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ (CASN), the color rendering index (CRI) is 84.6, the correlation color temperature (CCT) is 5594 K, and the LE is 192.91 lm/W @ 39.87 W/mm 2 . More importantly, the relative intensity of laser module packaged by Ce:YAG & CASN-PiF decreased by 15% when tested at 4 W for 24 h. Besides, the packaged laser flashlight has good collimation within a visible illuminance. All the results show that the prepared sample can maintain high emission intensity at high laser PD and have a good heat resistance, which is a promising color conversion material in the field of solid-state laser illumination.

Abstract:By using a two-step solid-state reaction to synthesize the yellow-persistent Gd3Al2Ga3O12:Ce3+ phosphor, both the luminescence and afterglow properties were greatly enhanced. Its internal quantum efficiency reaches as high as 81.9%, indicating its promising application in reducing the flicker effect in AC-LED-based white light systems.

Transition of Emission Colours as a Consequence of Heat-Treatment of Carbon Coated Ce3+-Doped YAG Phosphors

Abstract:To modify the luminescence properties of Ce3+-doped Y₃Al₅O12 (YAG) phosphors, they have been coated with a carbon layer by chemical vapor deposition and subsequently heat-treated at high temperature under N₂ atmosphere. Luminescence of the carbon coated YAG:Ce3+ phosphors has been investigated as a function of heat-treatment at 1500 and 1650 °C. The 540 nm emission intensity of C@YAG:Ce3+ is the highest when heated at 1650 °C, while a blue emission at 400-420 nm is observed when heated at 1500 °C but not at 1650 °C. It is verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) that the intriguing luminescence changes are induced by the formation of new phases in C@YAG:Ce3+-1500 °C, which disappear in C@YAG:Ce3+-1650 °C. In order to understand the mechanisms responsible for the enhancement of YAG:Ce3+ emission and the presence of the blue emission observed for C@YAG:Ce3+-1500 °C, the samples have been investigated by a combination of several electron microscopy techniques, such as HRTEM, SEM-CL, and SEM-EDS. This local and cross-sectional analysis clearly reveals a gradual transformation of phase and morphology in heated C@YAG:Ce3+ phosphors, which is related to a reaction between C and YAG:Ce3+ in N₂ atmosphere. Through reaction between the carbon layer and YAG host materials, the emission colour of the phosphors can be modified from yellow, white, and then back to yellow under UV excitation as a function of heat-treatment in N₂ atmosphere.
Energy transfer and thermal stability enhancement in Ce/Cr co-doped Al 2 O 3 /YAG eutectic phosphor ceramics for broadband red-emission

Abstract:The Ce/Cr co-doped Al 2 O 3 /YAG eutectic phosphor ceramics for WLEDs with functional and structural integration were successfully solidified by laser floating zone melting (LFZM) method (>10 4 K/cm). The influences of Cr 3+ doping on microstructure, mechanical properties and optical characteristics of the eutectic phosphor ceramics were systematically and efficiently investigated. The results showed that the eutectic phosphor ceramics presented typical "Chinese script" (CS) irregular eutectic structure, consisting of interpenetrated Al 2 O 3 :Cr 3+ and YAG:Ce 3+ /Cr 3+ phases. Under the excitation of the blue light (460 nm), the eutectic phosphor ceramics exhibited excellent red-light emission with wavelengths of about 687 nm, 693 nm and 707 nm. The emission intensity could be still maintained at a high level of 68% at 127 °C compared to the intensity at room temperature, referring to good thermal stability of the eutectic phosphor ceramics. Especially, the color rendering index (Ra = 80) and the correlative color temperature (Tc = 5606 K) of the present eutectic phosphor were simultaneously improved by the energy transfer between Ce 3+ and Cr 3+ ions. The present Ce/Cr co-doped Al 2 O 3 /YAG eutectic phosphor ceramics can be used as excellent candidates for high performance warm WLEDs.

Abstract:In the high-power white light LEDs/LDs area, obtaining phosphor-converted materials with high thermal stability and high luminous emittance with proper blue/yellow light ratio has been the main challenge in recent years. In this study, a group of (CexY1-x)3(ScyAl1-y)5O12 transparent ceramics with high optical quality were proposed to rise to that challenge. Their spectra were regulated by incorporating Sc3+, showing blue shifted emission bands (peak position from 554 nm-538 nm), blue shifted excitation bands (462-445 nm) and narrowed full width at half maxima (120-112 nm). Significantly, the prepared Ce:YScAG transparent ceramics (TC) exhibited decent thermal quenching performance with the photoluminescence intensity at 150 degrees C maintaining 88.7% of its original value at room temperature. The Sc incorporation impacted the atoms' occupation and distance, crystal field splitting and energy band structure. Under remote LD excitation mode, the luminous efficiency of the prepared Ce:YScAG TC can achieve 164.8 lm/W. And even if the Ce3+ doping reaches 2.0 at%, the LE can still maintain 117.8 lm/W, exhibiting decent concentration quenching characteristic. Consequently, Ce:YScAG TCs have great potential as promising phosphor-converted materials in future high-power LED and LD white lighting.
Matrix Induced Synthesis of Y3Al5O12: Ce Phosphor Through the Pechini Method

Abstract:Trivalent cerium actived yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG:Ce) phosphor was prepared using the Pechini method. Phase transition during calcination was investigated through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results show that the powders directly transform into the pure YAG phase at 80 degrees C. The dimension of phosphor calcined at 1200 degrees C is micro-scale, which consists of nanometer scale primary particles. The effect of Cc doping content and calcination temperature on the luminescence properties is also discussed. The maximum emission is obtained for about 1 at.% Cc additions. The concentration quench effect is observed when Cc content increases beyond this limit. With the increment of calcination temperature, the emission intensity and lifetime increase.

Abstract:A series of blue light excitable yellow-emitting La3Si6−xAlxN11−x/3:Ce3+ (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, and 0.1) phosphors were prepared by a high temperature solid state reactions method. The variations in micro-structure and luminescent properties induced by substituting the Al3+/Si4+ ratio in La3Si6−xAlxN11−x/3:Ce3+ and the related mechanism were investigated. Interestingly, the emission spectrum displayed a red-shift by strengthening the longer wavelength component of the spectrum instead of shifting the emission peak, which was verified to be ascribed to the changed site occupancy of Ce3+. The inducement of redistribution of Ce3+ by introduction of Al3+ as well as its influence on local structures were explored. A tunable spectrum could be obtained through controlling the entering rate of Ce3+ at two different sites. The color rendering index of this phosphor system could be greatly improved with sufficient emission efficiency and thermal stability for applications in high power white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:A solid-state light source of directionally solidified Al2O3/Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ (YAG:Ce3+) eutectic phosphor ceramic with superior luminous efficacy (∼116.48 lm/W) and high fracture toughness (∼4.0 MPa·m1/2) is fabricated by laser floating zone melting (LFZM) for white light emitting diodes (WLEDs). The CeO2-doped Al2O3/YAG eutectic ceramic presents improved fracture toughness and prevents from the pore formation as compared to the undoped eutectic ceramic. Impressively, the doping of Ce element and the diffusion coefficient play dominant roles in accelerating the formation of cellular structure and causing the enlargement of the eutectic lamella spacing, respectively. Moreover, the optimal phase interface design act as scattering center and enhance the light conversion efficiency. The maximum luminous efficacy is achieved under the comprehensive investigation of the eutectic structure, phase interface as well as Ce3+ dopant. Moreover, the eutectic phosphor ceramic also exhibits excellent capability of thermal self-managing. The as-designed Al2O3/Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ eutectic phosphor ceramics have great potential as structural and functional materials in the high-brightness application of WLEDs.

Abstract:Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ (YAG:Ce3+) single crystal phosphor (SCP) exhibits high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) and excellent thermal conductivity and stability. Such properties are promising in high-power laser-excited white lighting applications. However, YAG:Ce3+ SCP usually shows low luminous flux and color rendering index (CRI, Ra) when excited by a transmissive laser. In this study, a self-designed three-integrating sphere system was established to characerize the optical performances of YAG:Ce3+ SCP palates under both the reflective and transmissive 455 nm blue laser excitations. Next, its luminous and color rendering properties under transmissive laser excitation were improved by surface roughening treatment and sintering of a CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ (CASN:Eu2+) phosphor-in-borate glass (PiBG) layer. The results revealed that: (1) When the YAG:Ce3+ SCP was excited by blue laser, its forward luminous flux was considerably lower than the backward one; (2) Under transmissive excitation, its luminous flux rolled up with the maximum increase rate of 109.19% when the averaged roughness (Ra) increased from 0.35 to 5.40 μm; (3) After sintering the CASN:Eu2+ PiBG layer on the roughening YAG:Ce3+ SCP, its luminous flux, CRI increased by 31.48% and 117.14%, and its color fidelity index (CFI, Rf) reached up to 82 under the transmissive 3.03 W blue laser excitation.

Abstract:The nominal composition of Al2O3-Ce:Y3Mg1.8Al1.4Si1.8O12 (A-Ce:YMASG) ceramic phosphors was fabricated by the vacuum sintering technique. The introduction of Al2O3 as a second phase partially enters the crystal lattice, which was confirmed by the composition changing of the samples through x-ray diffraction measurement. An impurity phase of Y4MgSi3O13 was observed in Ce:YMASG and disappeared with the introduction of Al2O3 at the concentration of 10 wt. %. When the content of Al2O3 increased to 30 and 50 wt. %, the second phase of Al2O3 was measured with actual weight ratios of 7.72 and 20.55 wt. %, respectively. The third phase of MgAl2O4 was found with the further addition of Al2O3 at 70 wt. %; the weight ratios of Ce: YMASG, Al2O3, and MgAl2O4 were 68.756, 18.457, and 12.787 wt. %, respectively. The luminescent characters of the samples were measured by the photoluminescence spectra and electroluminescent spectra. With the increase of Al2O3 from 0 to 30 wt. %, the emission wavelength of Ce3+ plummeted from 610 to 552 nm, and the luminous efficacy of the samples increased from 35 to 65 lm/W.
