Abstract:Phase-sensitive time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) can be used for fully distributed long-distance vibration monitoring. There is a fading phenolmenon in the Φ-OTDR, which will cause the signal intensity somewhere to be too low to extract the phase of the signal without distortion. In this paper, the Φ-OTDR based on space-division multiplexing (SDM) is proposed to suppress fading and we used multi-core optical fiber (MCF) to realize SDM. While inheriting the previous optimization strategy, we proposed a strategy based on frequency spectral similarity to process multiple independent signals obtained by SDM. And we compared the two methods. Through the experiments, the distortion rate can be reduced from an average level of 9.34% to less than 2% under continuous running of 270 s, which proves that SDM is a reliable technical route to achieve fading suppression. This method can effectively improve the fading suppression capability of the existed commercial systems.

Abstract:With the increasing diversity of application scenarios, there is a growing demand for distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) systems to monitor the environment without false alarms. In DAS system based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR), interference fading significantly lead to a large number of false alarms in the system, which affecting the system's monitoring capability. Before the phase demodulation process, Φ-OTDR system generally requires additional time for interference fading suppression. Therefore, the rapid acquisition of a fading-free signal before phase demodulation benefits the use of Φ-OTDR in real-time demanding scenarios. In this paper, based on the time-domain stitching and complex-field moving average, a fast signal synthesis (FSS) algorithm is proposed, enabling the quick synthesis of signals while maintaining fading suppression performance. Experimental results show that the signal intensity obtained by FSS algorithm fluctuates within 27 dB, while the intensity of the conventional denoising algorithm fluctuates more than 50 dB. Meanwhile, this method is more rapid than the rotated-vector-sum (RVS) algorithm, and the time consumption of signal synthesis is only 26.58% of that of the RVS algorithm. FSS algorithm provides a new and faster way to synthesize signals for interference fading suppression. Benefiting from this, FSS algorithm further improves the real-time performance of the Φ-OTDR system.

Abstract:In this paper, what we believe to be a novel method is proposed to suppress the fading effect of the phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (Ф-OTDR) by using a phase-modulated optical frequency comb. In the Ф-OTDR system, intensity distributions of Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) light are different for pulsed probe lights with different central frequencies, therefore the locations of the fading points corresponding to signals of different frequencies are differently distributed, allowing the use of frequency division multiplexing to suppress the fading effects. In the experimental system of this paper, a continuous light in the form of a frequency comb is firstly generated through phase modulation. It is then modulated into a pulsed probe light and injected into the sensing fiber to produce different RBS intensity distributions. Finally, the extracted phase is processed by using the amplitude evaluation method, so that the distorted phase can be eliminated. Fading suppression is achieved using our system, and the effect of suppression is evaluated. By using an equal-amplitude optical frequency comb containing seven frequency components, the fading probability density of the system is dramatically reduced from the range of 5.49%-9.83% to 0.08%. Compared with the conventional system using a single acoustic-optic modulator to generate the frequency shift, the method proposed in this paper features a larger modulation bandwidth and more flexible frequency combination scheme to better suppress the fading effect. This method does not sacrifice the response bandwidth of the system, and the phase delay can be precisely controlled, which helps to fully suppress the fading effect.

Abstract:A frequency division multiplexing optical time domain reflectometry (FDM-OTDR) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A phase modulator is employed to convert single frequency laser to multiple frequencies where four frequencies are adopted as the probe. Coherent detection between the backscattered Rayleigh signals of the four-frequency probe light pulses propagating in fiber under test (FUT) and original single frequency local oscillator (LO) only generates two intermediate frequencies (IFs) as the result of direct synthesizing of the same IFs. The two dominant IFs are processed by parallel computing method. Experimental results show that compared with conventional C-OTDR the FDM-OTDR is four times faster in fading noise reduction and can also bring a 1.9dB single way dynamic range (SWDR) enhancement.

Abstract:The demand for phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (φ-OTDR), which is capable of reconstructing external disturbance accurately, is increasing. However, φ-OTDR suffers from fading where Rayleigh backscattering traces (RBS) have low amplitude and may be lower than the noise floor. Therefore, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is reduced. In conventional coherent φ-OTDR, an acoustic optical modulator (AOM), which consists of an RF driving source and an acousto-optic crystal, is commonly used to generate optical pulses and frequency shifts. Since RF driving and external modulation signals come from an independent oscillation source, every intermediate frequency (IF) trace has a different phase bias. Therefore, it is difficult to average the IF signals directly for noise reduction. In this paper, a coherent φ-OTDR system based on phase-locking structure was proposed. This structure provided a clock homologous carrier signal, a modulation signal and a data acquisition (DAQ) trigger signal. Then, moving average methods were taken on IF signals before phase demodulating to reduce the overall noise floor of the system. This new φ-OTDR is more tolerant to fading, which can provide higher accuracy for vibration reconstruction. The frequency response range of vibration was as low as 1Hz, and a 25dB improvement of SNR was achieved.

Abstract:In order to enhance the signal-to-noise-ratio of a distributed acoustic sensing system based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR), we have proposed a combination of segmented unwrapping algorithm, averaging estimation of phase difference, and infinite impulse response (IIR) filtering method. The enhancement of signal quality is numerically demonstrated. Moreover, we have studied the influence resulted from the light source noise on the Φ-OTDR performance. The result has shown that when the linewidth of light source used in the Φ-OTDR system is narrower, the performance of the system is better. In a word, such a Φ-OTDR system could obtain higher quality demodulated signals when the narrower linewidth light source is chosen and the method of averaging estimation phase difference is used.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR) has attracted attention in scientific research and industry because of its distributed dynamic linear response to external disturbances. However, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of Φ-OTDR is still a limited factor by the weak Rayleigh Backscattering coefficient. Here, the multi-transverse modes heterodyne matched-filtering technology is proposed to improve the system SNR. The capture efficiency and nonlinear threshold are increased with multiple transverse modes in few-mode fibers; the incident light energy is permitted to be enlarged by a wider probe pulse by using heterodyne matched-filtering without spatial resolution being deteriorated. As far as we know, this is the first time that both multi-transverse modes integration method and digital heterodyne matched filtering method have been used to improve the SNR of Φ-OTDR simultaneously. Experimental results show that the noise floor is reduced by 11.4 dB, while the target signal is kept. We believe that this proposed method will help DAS find important applications in marine acoustic detection and seismic detection.

Abstract:The interference fading, which is detrimental for signal retrieval in phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR), is analyzed in frequency domain, and a novel spectrum extraction and remix method is proposed to achieve fading-free operation for Phi-OTDR with heterodyne detection. The operation principle is theoretically analyzed, and it is well confirmed by both simulation and experimental results. This method utilizes single rectangular probe pulse and makes full use of its spectral contents. Therefore, no complicated pulse modulation is required and the signal processing executed in digital domain is simple.

Abstract:This study presents a novel approach for extracting perturbations in phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) under challenging ultra-low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. To effectively enhance the SNR of Φ-OTDR signals, a block-matching and 3-D (BM3D) based denoising scheme was proposed. 1-D Φ-OTDR traces are converted to 2-D images that encapsulate both temporal and spatial information, enabling the utilization of the data correlation in both domains through BM3D to reduce the signal noise. This approach effectively preserves intricate details of Rayleigh signals while mitigating the impact of noise. Moreover, an adaptive parameter selection method tailored to the characteristics of reflected backscattered signals is developed to facilitate a more convenient and robust implementation of the denoising algorithm. Experimental validation is accomplished by performing distributed vibration sensing over an 80 km optical fiber with a spatial resolution of 10 m. Results show a substantial enhancement in SNR from 1.77 dB to 40.6 dB at the end of the test fiber. We firmly believe that the proposed approach holds significant potential for widespread application in long-distance distributed sensing scenarios operating under low SNR conditions.

Abstract:In order to suppress the phase distortion caused by fading in phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer ( -OTDR) system, a new multi-resolution phase compensation algorithm is proposed in this paper. When the intensity of the beat signal approaches the system floor noise, the phase variation will gradually follow the uniform distribution, and fading occurs. The fading region in the spatiotemporal phase plane would be determined subsequently by synthesizing the differential section intensity. The redundancy and local correlation of the phase plane is thoroughly utilized by the patch searching algorithm in multi-resolution. Hence, the marked fading region would be compensated by the fading free region in the phase plane. The proposed method has been proved and analyzed that the fading can be effectively suppressed in the -OTDR system in the experiment. The fading region can be accurately compensated whether the disturbance exists. The disturbance can be restructured effectively with SNR of 31.2 dB. Furthermore, the strain resolution was achieved to 7.685 Hz. Therefore, the proposed method provides a promising approach to realizing fading elimination without additional structure in the -OTDR system.

Abstract:The phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR) has been developed rapidly as a fully fiber-optic distributed vibration sensing technology. However, the demodulation technique based on the phase term would induce a serious false alarm problem due to the signal fading effect. An effective method to suppress fading-induced false alarms in the Phi-OTDR system is proposed, which is based on the suppression mask and numerical relationship between phase and amplitudes of Rayleigh backscattering. The performance of the proposed method has been experimentally demonstrated in both laboratory environment and in-field situation test. Without any hardware addition in a traditional Phi-OTDR equipment, false alarms rate can be reduced from 4.81% to 0.15%, whereas low missing alarms rate can be achieved at the same time. In-field results show that this work provides a low-cost solution to enhance the performance for real-life engineering application of the phase-discrimination Phi-OTDR system. Abstract:A highly coherent wave is favorable for applications in which phase retrieval is necessary, yet a high-coherence wave is prone to encounter Rayleigh fading phenomenon as it passes through a medium of random scatters. As an exemplary case, a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR) utilizes the coherent interference of backscattering light along a fiber to achieve ultra-sensitive acoustic sensing, but sensing locations with fading will not be functional. Apart from the sensing domain, fading is also ubiquitous in optical imaging and wireless telecommunication, and therefore, it is of great interest. In this paper, we theoretically describe and experimentally verify how the fading phenomenon in one-dimensional (1-D) optical scatters will be suppressed with an arbitrary number of independent probing channels. We initially theoretically explained why fading would cause severe noise in the demodulated phase of Phi-OTDR; then, M-degree summation of incoherent scattered light-waves is studied for the purpose of eliminating fading. Finally, the enhancement and the fluctuation of retrieved phase signal-to-noise-ratio were analytically derived and experimentally verified. This paper provides a guideline for the fading elimination in 1-D optical scatters, and it also provides insight for optical imaging and wireless telecommunication.

Abstract:Interference fading problem is an inevitable challenge in distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) system, and the uncertainty of the dynamic external environment further increases the difficulty of denoising. Based on the conventional single-domain fading suppression methods, we propose the concept of integrated fading suppression (IFS) algorithm set, which provides four denoising approaches and each of them is composed of at least two independent techniques. The combination of multiple single-domain denoising methods enhances the reliability of the proposed method. In an experiment involving 30 sets of data, the IFS algorithm set succeeded in completely eliminating all fading noise. In addition, the demodulation results show that compared to only applying a bandpass filter, these four IFS algorithms could improve the intensity signal-to-noise ratio by an average of 5.82 dB, while decreasing the amplitude fluctuation range by 31.84 dB on average. Benefiting from its powerful fading suppression capability, the average strain noise of the demodulated results obtained by the proposed algorithm set goes down to 0.47 nϵ. It is worth noting that the IFS algorithm set with four denoising methods is highly flexible and could meet different requirements and preferences. With the proposed IFS algorithm set, it is expected that the DAS system could be thoroughly free from the influence of interference fading.
