Abstract:We demonstrate resonant slot nanoantennas on Ag film for surface plasmon (SP) radiation in optical frequency range. Radiation spectra of the nanoantennas and resonant mode patterns for different mode orders with high spatial resolution are obtained using cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. The dispersions are obtained from the experimental data, and the far-field angular distributions of the radiation are simulated for the four lowest modes. The nanoantennas, which can realize resonant conversion between free space light and SPs at nanoscale, should find applications in nanophotonic devices and integrated optical circuits. Abstract:Broadband spin-controlled surface plasmon polariton (SPP) launching and radiation via L-shaped optical slot nanoantennas are proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The phase retardation and spectra overlapping between two resonant plasmon modes in the L-shaped optical slot nanoantenna lie at the origin of this effect. SPP launching in two perpendicular directions are controlled by the spin of the incident light. Broadband directional launching of SPPs is achieved and the extinction ratio keeps larger than 7 dB within a wavelength range of 150 nm. Furthermore, the photon spin of SPP radiation via the L-shaped optical slot nanoantennas is controlled by SPP propagation directions. These investigations provide a route for spin-controlled nanophotonic applications.

Abstract:We report the construction of In(2)O(3)/Ag/In(2)O(3) sandwich nanostructures and realization of effective coupling with surface plasmon (SP) modes. An enhancement of photoluminescence as large as 278-fold is achieved for the new nanostructures, while only eightfold is obtained from bilayer structures. The advancement of the nanostructures is that both the frequency of incidence photons and the in-plane wavevector of the excited SP modes along each side of the sandwiched nanometer metal layer are identical, thus the momenta mismatch between two SP modes which inevitably occurs in commonly used metal/dielectric bilayer structures is no longer a problem. The fulfillment of the cross coupling and resonance conditions of the two SP modes leads to the tremendous amplification of light emission. Such sandwich nanostructures can be readily extended to other dielectric/metal/dielectric nanomaterial combinations and identified as technologically useful for SP mediated light emitting devices.

Abstract:We show here that the plasmonic array based on nanoapertures in ultrathin silver film radiates at optical frequency and behaves as an optical antenna array (OAA). The far-field radiation originates from the coherent superposition of plasmonic emissions on each bank of the aperture. The radiation of OAA presents a strong directivity, which depends on the in-plane rotation of aperture array, and on the polarization and incidence angle of the excitation light as well. We suggest that these features have potential applications in photovoltaics, light-emitting devices, and optical sensors.

Abstract:We investigate whispering-gallery-like surface plasmon modes in a silver nanoring located on a diamond substrate. These hybrid modes are demonstrated to possess not only high quality factors (several hundred), but also ultra-small mode area as well as ultra-small mode volume (less than 0.1 mu m(3)). In experiments, this cavity structure shows great potential for studying a strong and deterministic coherent interaction between the hybrid mode and single quantum system embedded in the substrate. Abstract:We demonstrate plasmonic modes in a vertical nanocavity with an air output window at the top surface and Ag reflectors. The resonances of surface plasmon polaritons are investigated using cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. The resonant modes are determined by comparing experiment and theoretical simulations. The plasmon dispersion relation in the vertical nanocavities shows a strong confinement to the electromagnetic field, and the smallest modal volume is only 0.0014 μm(3). Our work provides insights into the development of nanoscale plasmonic vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers.
Single-molecule Detection and Radiation Control in Solutions at High Concentrations Via a Heterogeneous Optical Slot Antenna

Abstract:We designed a heterogeneous optical slot antenna (OSA) that is capable of detecting single molecules in solutions at high concentrations, where most biological processes occur. A heterogeneous OSA consists of a rectangular nanoslot fabricated on heterogeneous metallic films formed by sequential deposition of gold and aluminum on a glass substrate. The rectangular nanoslot gives rise to large field and fluorescence enhancement for single molecules. The near-field intensity inside a heterogeneous OSA is 170 times larger than that inside an aluminum zero-mode waveguide (ZMW), and the fluorescence emission rate of a molecule inside the heterogeneous OSA is about 70 times higher than that of the molecule in free space. Our proposed heterogeneous optical antenna enables excellent balance between performance and cost. The design takes into account the practical experimental conditions so that the parameters chosen in the simulation are well within the reach of current nano-fabrication technologies. Our results can be used as a direct guidance for designing high-performance, low-cost plasmonic nanodevices for the study of bio-molecule and enzyme dynamics at the single-molecule level.

Abstract:Highly-directional optical travelling wave antennas based on Ag nanowires are created, whose half-power beamwidth is achieved as small as 20 degrees. The radiation direction can be effectively adjusted over a range of up to 45.6 degrees by changing the feeding surface plasmon modes, and they have an ultra-broad bandwidth due to their nonresonant characteristic. A theoretical model based on mode coupling theory is constructed that can give a full description of the radiation properties, such as the radiation pattern, beam solid angle, radiation efficiency, and working bandwidth. The optical travelling wave antennas are easy to fabricate, control, and integrate with optical transmission lines; thus, they should have great potential applications in nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:We propose a novel design of broadband plasmonic nanoantenna that is suitable for fluorescence and Raman enhancement. The structure consists of a gold nanoring and bowties at the center. We numerically investigate the near field and far field performance by employing the finite-difference time-domain method. High Purcell enhancement and large SERS are demonstrated in a record wide spectral bandwidth of 700 nm based on a single emitter-antenna configuration. Moreover, unlike a traditional antenna design, the proposed nanoantenna has low heat generation and high field enhancement at the gap simultaneously when operating off resonance.
Realization of Fanolike Resonance Due to Diffraction Coupling of Localized Surface Plasmon Resonances in Embedded Nanoantenna Arrays

Abstract:We present a straightforward method to realize Fanolike resonance due to diffraction coupling of localized surface plasmon (SP) resonances by embedding the nanoantenna arrays into the substrate. Light transmission spectra of the embedded nanoantenna arrays are theoretically studied and show a Fanolike resonance resulting from the interference between localized SP resonances excited on individual plasmonic nanoantennas and an in-plane propagating collective surface mode arising from the array periodicity. The effect can be attributed to the fact that our approach, by embedding the nanoantenna arrays into the substrate, offers a more homogeneous dielectric background allowing stronger diffraction coupling among nanoantennas leading to the Fanolike resonance. Upon the excitation of this Fanolike resonance, a nearly 110 times enhancement of electric fields was achieved as compared with the purely resonance. More importantly, we also found that in addition to the above requirement of homogeneous dielectric background, only a collective surface mode with its electric field parallel to the array plane can mediate the excitation of such a Fanolike resonance. The steep dispersion of the Fano resonance profile and enhanced electric fields obtained in these structures could be attractive for biosensing and nonlinear photonics applications.

Abstract:We propose a nano-polarization-converter made of a resonant L-shaped slot antenna in a gold film and study its optical properties using the finite-difference time-domain method. Phase retardation between the fast and slow axes of the nano-polarization-converter originates from the simultaneous excitation of both single-surface first-order magnetic plasmon resonance mode and second-order magnetic plasmon resonance mode at the working wavelength. By adjusting the size of the slot antenna, which is still much smaller than the wavelength, the working wavelength can be tuned within a large wavelength range.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) periodical close-packed nanoring tube arrays (RTAs) composed of metal and dielectric materials with unique surface plasmon properties have been investigated. A new fabrication route, which uses conventional semiconductor fabrication methods, has been developed to produce large-area highly ordered close-packed RTAs in a controllable and inexpensive way. Optical properties of this structure, as well as its replica, are investigated by both the finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) algorithm and experiments. The simulation results show that both BW-SPP modes and coupled cavity modes at separate wavelengths are excited in RTAs, in accordance with experimental results. These modes are dependent on the geometry of RTAs. Ag RTAs with high absorption over the visible and near IR range has been experimentally demonstrated, which can be used in solar cells and as chemical/biological sensors with miniature size. The RTAs can also be employed as templates for producing other nanostructures by the nano-imprint methods, such as non-close-packed cylindrical column arrays that can be applied to surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates. Fano Resonances of Plasmonic Nanodisk

Abstract:The Fano resonance of a single symmetry broken Ag nanodisk under a normal incidence was investigated by using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. The asymmetry line shape of the Fano resonance was controlled by modifying the open angle of the nanodisk, and this Fano splitting was demonstrated as the result of the overlap between the broad dipolar and narrow quadrupolar modes, which could be strengthened by enlarging the radius of the nanodisk. A semi-analytical method was developed to calculate the plasmon hybridization, which was used to analyze the sub-process of the quadru Fano resonance. With the good agreement between theoretical calculations and FDTD simulations, the suggested method provides a way to investigate and control the Fano resonance inside a single planar nanostructure, and can be applied to the future high-performance Fano resonance sensors.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate electromagnetic responses in multilayered Ag/SiO2 nanoplates at optical frequencies. Electric and magnetic resonances, which originate from localized surface plasmons, are demonstrated by the effective permeability and permittivity, electric and magnetic field distributions, and measured transmission at oblique incidence. Furthermore, electric and magnetic resonances can be tailored by the geometrical parameters of the nanoplates. In a rectangular nanoplate, magnetic resonance only shifts with the width along the incident polarization, and electric resonance shifts obviously as the aspect ratio of the nanoplate changes. The investigation may provide a tunable building block for optical metamaterials.

Abstract:We design and investigate a 2.5-dimensional multi-resonant plasmonic nanostructure, which is a multilevel plasmonic nanoterrace array for enhancing both the excitation and emission processes of an optical effect. The new structure supports multiple resonances, which spatially match with each other and can be tuned independently by changing its geometrical parameters. It allows simultaneous enhancement of the local electric fields at multiple wavelengths associated with various optical processes. Moreover, as a 2.5-dimensional structure, the fabrication of the plasmonic nanoterrace array is simple and fast, making it a promising design for various surface-enhanced spectroscopy applications. Abstract:Surface lattice resonances (SLRs) with high-quality factors supported by metal nanoparticle arrays are useful for plasmonic nanolasers, biochemical sensors, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Most nanoparticle arrays are fabricated on a substrate, and the refractive index mismatch between the substrate and superstrate suppresses the performance of SLRs. In this work, we propose unique SLRs excited in suspended, self-aligned symmetric double-layer gratings with index-matched environment. The self-aligned double-layer gratings are fabricated using a single-step electron beam lithography and exhibit a Fano-like spectra resulting from interference between out-of-plane plasmonic resonances and diffraction modes. By changing the incident angle and refractive index of the surrounding medium, the SLRs can be tuned from visible to near-infrared regions with a high-quality factor of 120.

Efficient Directional Excitation of Surface Plasmons by a Single-Element Nanoantenna

Abstract:Directional light scattering is important in basic research and real applications. This area has been successfully downscaled to wavelength and subwavelength scales with the development of optical antennas, especially single-element nanoantennas. Here, by adding an auxiliary resonant structure to a single-element plasmonic nanoantenna, we show that the highly efficient lowest-order antenna mode can be effectively transferred into inactive higher-order modes. On the basis of this mode conversion, scattered optical fields can be well manipulated by utilizing the interference between different antenna modes. Both broadband directional excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and inversion of SPP launching direction at different wavelengths are experimentally demonstrated as typical examples. The proposed strategy based on mode conversion and mode interference provides new opportunities for the design of nanoscale optical devices, especially directional nanoantennas.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) coupling is a basic subject for plasmonic study and applications. Optical nanoantennas enable downscaling of the SPP coupling to subwavelength scales. In this study, asymmetric optical slot nanoantenna pairs composed of two optical slot nanoantennas with different lengths are proposed for SPP directional coupling. Broadband unidirectional launching of SPPs is achieved, and the extinction ratio obtained experimentally reaches up to 44. The bandwidth is larger than 157 nm. Furthermore, SPP direction-selective radiation is demonstrated using the asymmetric optical slot nanoantenna pairs. A novel plasmonic display device showing the propagation direction of SPPs is achieved by employing asymmetric optical slot nanoantenna pairs without any electric device. Asymmetric optical slot nanoantenna pairs have large potential in the directional control of SPP launching and radiation and can be very useful in compact optical circuits and other photonic integrations.

Abstract:In this article, we reviewed new designs for plasmonic nanostructure and its nanofocusing, coupling, resonance, and waveguide characterizations. With in-plane Fresnel zone plates, a 15 times field enhancement was achieved for the plasmonic nanofocusing. Plasmonic antennas placed at both ends of a single nanowire, consisting of a nanooptical circuit, was successfully realized in an enhanced plasmon coupling and emission. Plasmonic Fano resonance was also observed in a single sliced Ag nanodisk with the structure symmetry breaking. A hybrid plasmonic waveguide with a CdS nanoribbon placed on Ag surface showed an excellent mode confinement and energy low dissipation. More potential applications based on these plasmonic configurations are also discussed in this article.
