Abstract:Static resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) generated by saddle coil current have been applied in J-TEXT tokamak experiments in order to study their effects on tearing mode instabilities. With increasing RMP amplitude in time during the discharge, the mode stabilization is first observed, but a large locked mode follows if the RMP amplitude is increased to a very large value, indicating that the RMP amplitude is important in determining the plasma response and the tearing mode behaviour. By careful adjustment of the RMP amplitude, the (partial) stabilization of the m/n = 2/1 tearing mode by RMPs of moderate amplitude has been achieved without causing mode locking (m and n are the poloidal and toroidal mode numbers). To compare with experimental results, nonlinear numerical modelling based on reduced MHD equations has been carried out. With experimental parameters as input, both the mode locking and mode stabilization by RMPs are also obtained from numerical modelling. Further calculations have been carried out to study the plasma parameters affecting the mode stabilization by RMPs, including the plasma rotation frequency, viscosity, Alfvén velocity and the RMP amplitude. It is found that the suppression of the tearing mode by RMPs of moderate amplitude is possible for a sufficiently high ratio of plasma rotation velocity to the Alfvén speed. A larger plasma viscosity enhances the mode stabilization.

Abstract:Numerical understandings of the effect of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) on 2/1 tearing mode (TM) dynamics observed on J-TEXT tokamak (Hu et al. Nucl. Fusion 52, 083011 (2012)) are presented in this paper. The non-uniform mode rotation frequency, modulated by electromagnetic force (Fem) and viscous force (Fvs), results in the applied RMPs contributing both net stabilizing and braking effect on TM. Numerical evaluation based on analytical theory shows the applied RMP contributes a dominant stabilizing effect, which is responsible for the suppression of TM. The dynamics of the first discovered small locked island are investigated. It is found that the island is locked at the stabilizing phase and the saturated island width is less than the linear layer width. The simulated Mirnov signal indicates the small locked island is likely to be the complete suppression case observed in experiments. Associated with the application of RMP, the shape of Mirnov signal deviates from sinusoidal before mode locking, which is explained by numerical modeling. The comparisons between the numerical and experimental results are in good agreement phenomenally.

Abstract:The effects of the plasma current modulation on the linear instability of the tearing mode are numerically investigated. It is found that the tearing mode can be stabilized if the frequency of the modulation is suitable and the oscillation amplitude of the resonant surface position is large enough. The power needed for the lower-hybrid-current-drive to stabilize the tearing mode by oscillating the position of the resonant surface is comparable to the power consumption of the conventional method of tearing mode stabilization by using the electron-cyclotron-current-drive.

Abstract:A series of experiments on the interactions between external resonant magnetic perturbations (IMP) and plasmas has recently been conducted, using static resonant magnetic perturbation (SRMP) coils on the Joint Texas Experimental Tokamak (J-TEXT). The tearing mode can be completely suppressed by applying SRMP. However, the locked mode is likely to be stimulated under a larger SRMP field even though the tearing mode has been first suppressed. Abstract:The stabilization of the nonlinear tearing mode by rapidly oscillating the resonant surface has been investigated numerically in a large aspect ratio tokamak with a circular cross-section. By means of the radio frequency current drive, the plasma current can be modulated to make the resonant surface (rs) oscillate in time near its mean position. Previous results show that the linear tearing mode can be suppressed by oscillating the resonant surface with a suitable frequency and amplitude. At the nonlinear stage, the tearing mode stabilization shows different properties. The suppression effects not only depend on the modulation frequency and the oscillation width of the resonant surface but also depend on the relative size of χ0 to δ (here, χ0 is the oscillation width of the resonant surface and δ is the width of tearing layer) and the relative width of χ0 to the magnetic island width W.

Abstract:The influence of modulated-ECCD on m/n=2/1 resistive tearing mode is investigated by a three-dimensional toroidal and non-reduced MHD code CLT. It is found that, after applying a modulated-ECCD, tearing mode instabilities are suppressed and magnetic islands are gradually reduced to a low level, then the width of the magnetic islands exhibit periodic oscillation with the time scale of ECCD modulation frequency. The minimum width of magnetic islands decreases with the decrease of ECCD modulation frequency and increases with the increase of the buildup time of the driven current.

Abstract:The coupling of multiple magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes can lead to mode locking and major disruption in tokamak plasmas. In the J-TEXT tokamak, the coupling between two small modes, i.e. m/n = 2/1 and 3/1 modes (m and n are poloidal and toroidal mode numbers, respectively), appears when the edge safety factor is reduced to the vicinity of 3. After the mode coupling, the toroidal phase difference between the 2/1 and 3/1 modes equals 0 in the low field side midplane. This phase relation of coupled modes leads to mutual destabilization and even major disruption. A control scheme to avoid disruption caused by coupled modes by resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) is presented. It is found that the application of RMP significantly changes the evolution of the coupled modes. The coupling of the 2/1 and 3/1 modes occurs earlier as the RMP amplitude increases. The RMP with moderate amplitude can suppress the growth of 2/1 and 3/1 coupled modes and hence avoid disruption. These results provide a possible strategy for the suppression of neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) seed islands on International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) or future fusion reactors.

Abstract:Control of the tearing mode by sawtooth activity has been achieved in the Joint European Torus tokamak experiments. It has been shown that the tearing mode can be stabilized by short-period sawtooth oscillation. Based on the experimental results, a model for the tearing mode stabilized by sawtooth activity has been proposed, which mainly focuses on the periodic variation of the current during sawtooth activity. Both the current oscillation and the induced electric field which is due to the rapid variation of the current play important roles in the tearing mode stabilization.

Abstract:Enhancements of residual Reynolds stresses and symmetry breaking with resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) are presented. These experiments were performed using a Langmuir probe array in the edge plasmas of the J-TEXT tokamak. This study aims to explain the mechanisms for generating residual stresses and intrinsic rotations. It is observed that with RMPs, peaked residual stresses, steeper pressure gradients and stronger shear layers all appear around the resonant surface. The toroidal rotation is accelerated in the direction of the plasma current and shows a correlation with turbulence and the measured residual stresses near the resonant surfaces of RMPs. Symmetry breaking induced by magnetic islands is proposed as a new mechanism, which qualitatively explains the enhanced residual stresses and the acceleration of the toroidal rotation. The changes to the residual stresses and symmetry breaking with RMPs near the last closed surface are also discussed.

Abstract:The effects of asymmetric magnetic perturbation on the triggering and evolution of double tearing modes (DTMs) are investigated using nonlinear magnetohydrodynamics simulations in a slab geometry. We find that for reversed magnetic shear plasmas the resistive reconnection process induced by the initial perturbation at one rational surface can drive a new island at the other rational surface with the same mode number. The four typical states of the mode for the time evolution are found, and include: (i) a linear growth stage; (ii) a linear/nonlinear stable stage; (iii) an interactively driving stage; and (iv) a symmetric DTM stage. These differ from previous simulation results. Moreover, nonlinear DTM growth is found to strongly depend on the asymmetric magnetic perturbation, particularly in the early nonlinear phase. The initial perturbation strength scale of island width suggests that the left island enters into a Sweet-Parker growth process when the right island is sufficiently large to effectively drive the other. These results predict that although externally applied magnetic perturbations can suppress the neoclassical tearing mode they can also trigger new instabilities such as asymmetric DTMs.

Abstract:It has been found that a higher-frequency rotating resonant magnetic perturbation (RRMP) can suppress a large tearing mode (TM) and avoid subsequent disruption (Li et al 2020 Nucl. Fusion 60 056022). To clarify the mechanism of the stabilizing effect of the higher-frequency RRMP, experiments on the effects of RRMPs with different frequencies on the TM amplitude are presented in this paper. After eliminating the destabilizing effect of RRMP, the statistical analysis reveals a notable negative correlation between changes in the amplitude of the TM and changes in the mode frequency. Further investigation indicates an absence of a suppressive effect of the toroidal flow on the TM. Instead, the data shows a clear linear relationship between changes in the TM amplitude and the flow shear in proximity to the resonant surface, with a high coefficient of determination (r (2)). Those experimental results suggest that the flow shear plays a significant role in the suppression of TMs and offer a plausible method to prevent disruptions in future devices.

Abstract:Neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) can degrade plasma confinement or even cause disruptions in existing tokamaks.Stabilization of the / 3 / 2 m n = NTMs by radio frequency (rf) current is investigated by the modified Rutherford equation (MRE) in this paper.In a range of parameters, the required rf current for mode stabilization is obtained, which is linearly proportional to the bootstrap current density for both modulated current drive (MCD) and non-modulated current drive (NMCD), linearly (quadratically) to the radial width of the rf current for MCD (NMCD), and quadratically to the radial deviation of the rf current from the rational surface for both MCD and NMCD.

Abstract:The rotating resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) could lock the tearing mode (TM) and prevent disruption. It is found that the TM instantaneous frequency oscillates during TM locking on the RMP. In this work, the TM frequency oscillation was derived analytically based on the toroidal torque balance, which was verified experimentally. It is found that two peaks with higher frequency (2fTM0-fRMP) and lower frequency (fRMP) occurred in the spectrum when the window width of FFT was shorter than the TM frequency oscillating period. Those two peaks were explained analytically based on the description of TM instantaneous frequency. The independence of the temporal information and the spatial information of the TM was explained analytically and verified by the spatial structure analysis of each peaks. This work is important for mode structure identification and provides a scheme for mode coupling control.

Abstract:Based on the two-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model, this study explores the impact of shear flow on the resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP)-induced double tearing mode (DTM). The results indicate that the effectiveness of shear flow in suppressing the double tearing mode is primarily dependent on the flow velocity at the outer rational surface. A notable finding is that, with higher flow velocities, the double tearing mode is effectively suppressed. However, in cases of very weak flow velocities, the shear flow still exerts an influence, but with a limited suppression effect. Specifically, it can only inhibit the inner island, while the outer island continues to grow under the influence of the resonant magnetic perturbation.

Abstract:The resonant interaction between energetic-particles and tearing mode is an unresolved physics issue at present. It is found for the first time in tokamaks that an unstable tearing mode with slowly rotating m/n = 2/1 helicity, where m/n represent poloidal/toroidal mode-numbers, interacts with energetic-ions and results in amplitude-bursting/frequency-chirping fishbone-like activities. Nonlinear hybrid kinetic-MHD simulations with M3D-K code prove that the co-passing energetic-ions are responsible for the drive of tearing modes, and the wave-particle resonance condition is satisfied at , where , and are the toroidal, poloidal angular frequencies of energetic-ions and the mode frequency respectively. These findings can help the understanding of tearing mode induced energetic-particle loss and particle acceleration during the tearing mode reconnection in laboratory and space plasmas.

Abstract:Major plasma disruption is one of the most critical issues to be solved for tokamak fusion reactors. Experiments to prevent mode locking and subsequent disruptions have been carried out on the J-TEXT tokamak using rotating resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs). The tearing modes, which are locked and lead to disruptions without the application of RMPs, can be accelerated by rotating RMPs to the RMP frequency. As a result, mode locking and subsequent disruptions are delayed or prevented. The effects of RMP amplitude and frequency on disruption prevention have been investigated.

Abstract:In this paper, a resistive magnetohydrodynamics model is applied to study the effect of sawtooth driven on classical/neoclassical tearing modes in tokamak plasmas. In a model of forced reconnection, the sawtooth is considered as a boundary disturbance for m>1 modes and causes the islands growth of m/n = 2/1 and 3/2 modes through toroidal coupling. Theoretical and numerical analyses show that the linear growth of the modes is driven by precursors of the sawtooth through the linear mode coupling, while differential rotation has great effect on both the linear and the nonlinear development of the modes. It is believed that the tearing mode can be suppressed by control of the sawtooth by radio frequency heating or current drive.

Abstract:A new damping model on the resistive wall mode (RWM) instability is studied, via the turbulence induced plasma viscosity (in short, turbulent viscosity). In a cylindrical plasma, the synergistic effect on suppressing the RWM is investigated between this new damping mechanism and the plasma flow. An eigenmode formulation is derived based on magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) theory, where the momentum equation is extended by including the turbulent viscosity term with a proportionality coefficient chi. Numerical results show that, in the absence of plasma flow, increasing chi decreases the RWM growth rate but does not fully stabilize the mode. However, in the presence of sufficiently fast plasma flow, turbulent viscosity can lead to full suppression of the RWM, when chi exceeds a critical value. Similarly, at a given chi value, the plasma flow can fully suppress the mode when the flow velocity exceeds a threshold value. In particular, turbulent viscosity significantly reduces the threshold value of the flow velocity required for full stabilization of the RWM.

Abstract:We propose using a directional time-varying (rotating) driving magnetic field to suppress magneto-Rayleigh-Taylor (MRT) instability in dynamic Z-pinches. A rotational drive magnetic field is equivalent to two magnetic-field components, {\Theta} and Z, that alternate in time, referred to as an alternate Theta-Z-pinch configuration. We consider the finitely thick cylindrical liner configuration in this paper. We numerically integrate the perturbation equation to stagnation time based on the optimal background unperturbed trajectories. We assess the cumulative growth of the dominant mode selected by some mechanism at the beginning of an implosion. The maximum e-folding number at stagnation of the dominant mode of an optimized alternate Theta-Z-pinch is significantly lower than that of the standard Theta- or Z-pinch. The directional rotation of the magnetic field contributes to suppress the instabilities, independent of the finite thickness. The finite thickness effect plays a role only when the orientation of the magnetic field varies in time whereas it does not appear in the standard Theta- or Z-pinch. The rotating frequency of the magnetic field and the thickness of liner are both having a monotonic effect on suppression. Their synergistic effect can enhance the suppression on MRT instability. Because the MRT instability can be well suppressed in this way, the alternate Theta-Z-pinch configuration has potential applications in liner inertial fusion. Abstract:The effect of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) on particle confinement is studied in J-TEXT tokamak by using externally applied rotating RMPs. It is found that RMPs cause improved (degraded) particle confinement when its frequency is higher (lower) than the natural m/n = 2/1 tearing mode frequency, and the amount of change in electron density is proportional to the difference between these two frequencies, where m and n are the poloidal and toroidal mode number, respectively. These results reveal the important role of the relative rotation between RMPs and the electron fluid in affecting the particle confinement. The experimental results are compared to numerical ones based on nonlinear two-fluid equations, and quantitative agreement is found.
