Abstract:We suggest a perturbation method for obtaining the lowest eigenvalues of the nuclear-shell -model Hamiltonian. We introduce a "cutoff" based on the features of the nuclear-shell-model Hamiltonian matrices. Our new method is exemplified by a few realistic nuclei. Overlaps between the wave functions of our approach and those of the exact shell model are presented. Some of electromagnetic quantities are also discussed.

Abstract:The eigenvalue problem is one of the fundamental issues of sciences. Many research fields have been challenged by diagonalizing huge matrices. The nuclear structure theorists face this problem in studies of medium-heavy nuclei in terms of the nuclear shell model, in which the configuration space is too gigantic to handle. Thus one usually truncates the nuclear shell model configuration space based on various considerations. Another approach is to make use of super computers by various algorithms, and/or to obtain approximate eigenvalues. In this paper we review our recent efforts in obtaining approximate eigenvalues of the nuclear shell model Hamiltonian, with the focus on our semi-empirical approach and a number of extrapolation approaches towards predicting the lowest eigenvalue, as well as strong correlation between the sorted eigenvalues and the diagonal matrix elements, and so on.

Abstract:Conventional diagonalization methods to calculate nuclear energy levels in the framework of the configuration-interaction (CI) shell model approach are prohibited in very large model spaces. The shell model Monte Carlo (SMMC) is a powerful technique for calculating thermal and ground-state observables of nuclei in very large model spaces, but it is challenging to extract nuclear spectra in this approach. We present a novel method to extract low-lying energy levels for given values of a set of good quantum numbers such as spin and parity. The method is based on imaginary-time one-body density correlation matrices that satisfy asymptotically a generalized eigenvalue problem. We validate the method in a light nucleus that allows comparison with exact diagonalization results of the CI shell model Hamiltonian. The method is applicable to other finite-size quantum many-body systems that can be described within a CI shell model approach.

Abstract:One of the emerging computational approaches in nuclear physics is the configuration interaction (CI) method for solving the many-body nuclear Hamiltonian in a sufficiently large single-particle basis space to obtain exact answers - either directly or by extrapolation. One particular goal is to compute a number of lowest eigen-values and eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian Ĥ that are associated with a fixed total angular momentum J. To achieve this goal, we perform a simultaneous diagonalization of Ĥ and Ĵ2, where Ĵ2 is the total angular momentum square operator. In this approach, we first compute the invariant subspace of Ĵ2 corresponding to a fixed and known eigenvalue λ = J (J + 1), and then project Ĥ into this subspace in order to extract desired spectral information from the resulting lower dimensional Hamiltonian. In this paper, we discuss how to compute the desired invariant subspace of Ĵ2 (or equivalently, the null space of Ĵ2-λl) efficiently on a large-scale distributed-memory high performance computer. We describe both the algorithms we use to solve the problem and implementation details that allow us to achieve optimal performance. We demonstrate the performance of our implementation by numerical experiments conducted for a few light nuclei.

Abstract:We propose a Monte Carlo method, which is a hybrid method of the quantum Monte Carlo method and variational Monte Carlo theory, to study the Hubbard model. The theory is based on the off-diagonal and the Gutzwiller type correlation factors which are taken into account by a Monte Carlo algorithm. In the 4x4 system our method is able to reproduce the exact results obtained by the diagonalization. An application is given to investigate the half-filled band case of two-dimensional square lattice. The energy is favorably compared with quantum Monte Carlo data.

Abstract:We propose a distinct numerical approach to effectively solve the problem of partial diagonalization of the super-large-scale quantum electronic Hamiltonian matrices. The key ingredients of our scheme are the new method for arranging the basis vectors in the computer's RAM and the algorithm allowing not to store a matrix in RAM, but to regenerate it on-the-fly during diagonalization procedure. This scheme was implemented in the program, solving the Anderson impurity model in the framework of dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The DMFT equations for electronic Hamiltonian with 18 effective orbitals that corresponds to the matrix with the dimension of 2.4 * 10^9 were solved on the distributed memory computational cluster.

Abstract:The estimation of low energies of many-body systems is a cornerstone of computational quantum sciences. Variational quantum algorithms can be used to prepare ground states on pre-fault-tolerant quantum processors, but their lack of convergence guarantees and impractical number of cost function estimations prevent systematic scaling of experiments to large systems. Alternatives to variational approaches are needed for large-scale experiments on pre-fault-tolerant devices. Here, we use a superconducting quantum processor to compute eigenenergies of quantum many-body systems on two-dimensional lattices of up to 56 sites, using the Krylov quantum diagonalization algorithm, an analog of the well-known classical diagonalization technique. We construct subspaces of the many-body Hilbert space using Trotterized unitary evolutions executed on the quantum processor, and classically diagonalize many-body interacting Hamiltonians within those subspaces. These experiments show that quantum diagonalization algorithms are poised to complement their classical counterpart at the foundation of computational methods for quantum systems.

Abstract:We use the generator-coordinate method with realistic shell-model interactions to closely approximate full shell-model calculations of the matrix elements for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{48}$Ca, $^{76}$Ge, and $^{82}$Se. We work in one major shell for the first isotope, in the $f_{5/2}pg_{9/2}$ space for the second and third, and finally in two major shells for all three. Our coordinates include not only the usual axial deformation parameter $\beta$, but also the triaxiality angle $\gamma$ and neutron-proton pairing amplitudes. In the smaller model spaces our matrix elements agree well with those of full shell-model diagonalization, suggesting that our Hamiltonian-based GCM captures most of the important valence-space correlations. In two major shells, where exact diagonalization is not currently possible, our matrix elements are only slightly different from those in a single shell.

Abstract:No-core shell model (NCSM) calculations using ab initio effective interactions are very successful in reproducing experimental nuclear spectra. The main theoretical approach is the use of effective operators, which include correlations left out by the truncation of the model space to a numerically tractable size. We review recent applications of the effective operator approach, within a NCSM framework, to the renormalization of the nucleon–nucleon interaction, as well as scalar and tensor operators.

A Quantum Annealing Protocol to Solve the Nuclear Shell Model

Abstract:The nuclear shell model describes very accurately the structure and dynamics of atomic nuclei. However, the exponential scaling of the basis size with respect to the number of degrees of freedom hampers a direct numerical solution for heavy nuclei. In this work, we investigate the implementation of a quantum annealing protocol for nuclear ground states. We propose a driver Hamiltonian with sufficiently large gaps, and validate our approach in nuclei with up to 28 nucleons employing classical simulations of the annealing evolution using a digitalized Trotter decomposition. While the nuclear Hamiltonian is non-local and thus challenging to implement in current annealing setups, the estimated computational cost of our annealing protocol on quantum circuits is polynomial in the number of elements of the many-body basis.

Abstract:We present a generator-coordinate method for realistic shell-model Hamiltonians that closely approximates the full shell model calculations of the matrix elements for the neutrinoless double-beta decay Sn-124, Te-130, and Xe-136. We treat not only quadrupole deformations but also the proton-neutron pairing amplitudes as generator coordinates. We validate this method by calculating and comparing spectroscopic quantities with the exact shell model results and experimental data. Our Hamiltonian-based generator-coordinate method produces 0 nu beta beta matrix elements much closer to the shell model ones, compared to the existing energy-density-functional-based generator-coordinate approaches. The remaining overestimation of 0 nu beta beta nuclear matrix element suggests that additional correlations may be needed to be taken into account for Sn-124, Te-130, and Xe-136 when calculating with the Hamiltonian-based generator-coordinate method. The validation of this method may open the possibility of calculating 0 nu beta beta matrix element of Nd-150 in a large shell-model space.
Diagonalization without Diagonalization: A Direct Optimization Approach for Solid-State Density Functional Theory

Abstract:We present a novel approach to address the challenges of variable occupation numbers in direct optimization of density functional theory (DFT). By parameterizing both the eigenfunctions and the occupation matrix, our method minimizes the free energy with respect to these parameters. As the stationary conditions require the occupation matrix and the Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian to be simultaneously diagonalizable, this leads to the concept of ``self-diagonalization,'' where, by assuming a diagonal occupation matrix without loss of generality, the Hamiltonian matrix naturally becomes diagonal at stationary points. Our method incorporates physical constraints on both the eigenfunctions and the occupations into the parameterization, transforming the constrained optimization into an fully differentiable unconstrained problem, which is solvable via gradient descent. Implemented in JAX, our method was tested on aluminum and silicon, confirming that it achieves efficient self-diagonalization, produces the correct Fermi-Dirac distribution of the occupation numbers and yields band structures consistent with those obtained with SCF methods in Quantum Espresso.

Abstract:We study extrapolation approaches to evaluate energies of low-lying states for nuclei in the sd and pf shells, by sorting the diagonal matrix elements of the nuclear shell-model Hamiltonian. We introduce an extrapolation method with perturbation and apply our new method to predict both low-lying state energies and E2 transition rates between low-lying states. Our predicted results arrive at an accuracy of the root-mean-squared deviations similar to 40-60 keV for low-lying states of these nuclei.
Modern shell-model diagonalizations with realistic NN forces

Abstract:The spectral and statistical properties of nuclei $^{46}$V and $^{48}$Cr are studied in the framework of nuclear shell model. A microscopical effective Hamiltonian derived from the CD-Bonn \textit{NN} potential is employed. The calculations are preliminary results of a newly developed parallel shell-model code. Calculations with the realistic \textit{NN} interaction reproduce well the ground-state rotational band and backbending phenomenon in $^{48}$Cr. A sudden alignment of all particles is seen above the backbend. The nearest-neighbour spacing distribution in $^{46}$V is presented and compared with the predictions of random-matrix theory. Significant deviation from the single Gaussian-orthogonal-ensemble distribution is obtained, indicating that the isospin-symmetry breaking is not so strong in the nucleus.

Abstract:The structure and reactions of light nuclei represent fundamental and formidable challenges for microscopic theory based on realistic strong interaction potentials. Several ab initio methods have now emerged that provide nearly exact solutions for some nuclear properties. The ab initio no core shell model (NCSM) and the no core full configuration (NCFC) method, frame this quantum many-particle problem as a large sparse matrix eigenvalue problem where one evaluates the Hamiltonian matrix in a basis space consisting of many-fermion Slater determinants and then solves for a set of the lowest eigenvalues and their associated eigenvectors. The resulting eigenvectors are employed to evaluate a set of experimental quantities to test the underlying potential. For fundamental problems of interest, the matrix dimension often exceeds 1010 and the number of nonzero matrix elements may saturate available storage on present-day leadership class facilities. We survey recent results and advances in solving this large sparse matrix eigenvalue problem. We also outline the challenges that lie ahead for achieving further breakthroughs in fundamental nuclear theory using these ab initio approaches.

Abstract:A method is proposed to improve the accuracy of approximate techniques for strongly correlated electrons that use reduced Hilbert spaces. As a first step, the method involves a change of basis that incorporates exactly part of the short-distance interactions. The Hamiltonian is rewritten in new variables that better represent the physics of the problem under study. A Hilbert-space expansion performed in the new basis follows. The method is successfully tested using both the Heisenberg model and the t-J model with holes on two-leg ladders and chains, including estimations for ground-state energies, static correlations, and spectra of excited states. An important feature of this technique is its ability to calculate dynamical responses on clusters larger than those that can be studied using exact diagonalization. The method is applied to the analysis of the dynamical spin structure factor S(q,ω) on clusters with 2×16 sites and 0 and 2 holes. Our results confirm previous studies [M. Troyer, H. Tsunetsugu, and T. M. Rice, Phys. Rev. B 53, 251 (1996)] that suggested that the state of the lowest energy in the spin-1 2-hole subspace corresponds to the bound state of a hole pair and a spin triplet. Implications of this result for neutron-scattering experiments both on ladders and planes are discussed.

Abstract:Recently isospin symmetry breaking for mass 60-70 region has been investigated based on large-scale shell-model calculations in terms of mirror energy diﬀerences (MED), Coulomb energy diﬀerences (CED) and triplet energy diﬀerences (TED). Behind these investigations, we have encountered a subtle problem in numerical calculations for odd-odd N = Z nuclei with large-scale shell-model calculations. Here we focus on how to solve this subtle problem by the Sakurai-Sugiura (SS) method, which has been recently proposed as a new diagonalization method and has been successfully applied to nuclear shell-model calculations.

Abstract:In this paper a state-of-the-art version of the nucleon-pair approximation to the nuclear shell model is suggested. The configuration space is constructed by stepwise coupling collective nucleon pairs with given spin. The one-body and two-body matrix elements, as well as the overlaps, are calculated in terms of the $M$-scheme nucleon-basis states, without resorting to any angular momentum couplings. Many redundant commutations are avoided by using the Wigner-Eckart theorem and an algorithm similar to the coefficients of fractional parentage in the nuclear shell model calculations. Numerical experiments demonstrate the overwhelming computational superiority in comparison to all previous approaches of nucleon-pair shell model, particularly for the shell model Hamiltonian in the form of effective interactions. In addition, we exemplify this state-of-the-art version of the nucleon-pair approximation by even-even rare-earth $^{142--152}\mathrm{Nd}$ isotopes, for which the model space is constructed by using $SDGI$ nucleon pairs, and the Hamiltonian is adopted as ${V}_{\mathrm{low}\text{\ensuremath{-}}k}$ potential. Our calculation of the nucleon-pair approximation is able to reproduce reasonably the low-lying energy states of those Nd isotopes, where the seniority-type, vibrational, transitional, and rotational modes are described on the same footing, without adjusting any parameter.
Microsopic nuclear level densities by the shell model Monte Carlo method

Abstract:The configuration-interaction shell model approach provides an attractive framework for the calculation of nuclear level densities in the presence of correlations, but the large dimensionality of the model space has hindered its application in mid-mass and heavy nuclei. The shell model Monte Carlo (SMMC) method permits calculations in model spaces that are many orders of magnitude larger than spaces that can be treated by conventional diagonalization methods. We discuss recent progress in the SMMC approach to level densities, and in particular the calculation of level densities in heavy nuclei. We calculate the distribution of the axial quadrupole operator in the laboratory frame at finite temperature and demonstrate that it is a model-independent signature of deformation in the rotational invariant framework of the shell model. We propose a method to use these distributions for calculating level densities as a function of intrinsic deformation.
