Abstract:Aim: To establish and evaluate a new method of endotracheal intubation in mice. Methods: Thirty NIH mice were randomly divided into three groups defined as A, B and C (10 mice in each group). Each mouse was intubated with anesthesia in a fixed position under direct vision of head-mounted magnifying glass. Methylene blue was instilled into each mouse in group A through catheter to determine whether the intubation was successful. Endotracheal intubations were carried out in group B every other day during 2 weeks. Mice in group C received no treatment except anesthesia. Autopsies were done in all mice after death. Results: In autopsies, we found that blue substances were homogeneous distributed from inferior extremity of trachea to lung, and the success rate of intubation was 100%. After repeated intubation, mice in group B could still be alive without severe complications , and no development retardation or weight loss was found compared with group C. Conclusion: The new method of endotracheal intubation in mice is simple, safe, effective, and worth spreading.
