Abstract:A homemade, demountable conventional concentric nebulizer developed for inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in the present study consisted of a conventional concentric nebulizer based body, a quartz capillary (0.25 mm i. d., 0.37 mm o. d.) and an adapter made from PTFE, which were assembled by epoxy resin. After immerging into boiling water, the epoxy resin became soft and the three components could be taken apart simply. Then the broken or blocked sample capillary was replaced by a commercially new capillary with the same dimensions and then they were assembled again. The optimal sensitivity was obtained when the gas flow rate was 0.87L · min -1 and sample uptake rate was 1.09 mL · min -1. The sensitivities, detection limits, precisions and the long-term stability as well as polymeric ion levels of the homemade nebulizer under optimal operating conditions were similar to, or better than those obtained with the Meinhard conventional concentric nebulizer, to some extent. The demountable construction of the homebuilt nebulizer permitted that the blocked or broken solution capillary could be conveniently renewed with the same capillary in dimensions, obtaining low cost and easy maintenance.
