In this paper, we calculate the value of Gauss sum $G{\left( \chi \right)} = {\sum {_{{x \in \mathbb{F}^{ * }_{q} }} \chi {\left( x \right)}\zeta ^{{T{\left( x \right)}}}_{p} } }$over ${\mathbb F}$ q , where q = p f , $f = \frac{{\varphi {\left( m \right)}}}{4}$, χ is a multiplicative character of ${\mathbb F}$ q and T is the trace map from${\mathbb F}$ q to ${\mathbb F}$ p . Under our assumptions, G(χ) belongs to the decomposition field K of p in ℚ(ζ m ) and Kis an imaginary quartic abelian number field. When the Galois group Gal(K/ℚ) is cyclic, we havestudied this cyclic case in another paper: "Gauss sums of index four: (1) cyclic case" (accepted byActa Mathematica Sinica, 2003). In this paper we deal with the non–cyclic case.

Abstract:We give a definition of generalized hypergeometric functions over finite fields using modified Gauss sums, which enables us to find clear analogy with classical hypergeometric functions over the complex numbers. We study their fundamental properties and prove summation formulas, transformation formulas and product formulas. An application to zeta functions of K3-surfaces is given. In the appendix, we give an elementary proof of the Davenport-Hasse multiplication formula for Gauss sums.

Abstract:In this paper, we defined a new generalized Cochrane sum with Dirichlet characters, and gave the upper bound of the generalized Cochrane sum with Dirichlet characters. Moreover, we studied the asymptotic estimation problem of the mean value of the generalized Cochrane sum with Dirichlet characters and obtained a sharp asymptotic formula for it. By using this asymptotic formula, we also gave the mean value of the generalized Dedekind sum.

Abstract:In the theory of hypergeometric series and generalized hypergeometric series, classical summation theorems, such as the two of Gauss and those of Kummer and Bailey for the series 2F1; those of Watson, Dixon, Whipple, and Saalschutz for the series 3F2; and others, play a key role. Applications of these classical summation theorems are well known. Berndt pointed out that a large number of interesting summations (including Ramanujan's summations and the Gregory–Leibniz pi summation) can be obtained very quickly by employing the above-mentioned classical summation theorems. Also, several interesting results involving products of generalized hypergeometric series have been obtained by Bailey by employing the above-mentioned classical summation theorems. Recently, the above-mentioned classical summation theorems have been generalized and extended. In our present investigations, our aim is to demonstrate the applications of the extended Kummer's summation theorem in establishing (i) extensions of Gauss's second summation theorem and Bailey's summation theorem; (ii) extensions of several summations (including Ramanujan's summations); (iii) extensions of several results involving products of generalized hypergeometric series; and (iv) an extension of classical Dixon's summation theorem. As special cases, we recover several known summations (including several Ramanujan summations and the Gregory–Leibniz pi summation) and various results involving products of generalized hypergeometric series due to Bailey.

Abstract:We consider weak and strong Gaussian approximations for a two-color generalized Friedman's urn model with homogeneous and nonhomogeneous generating matrices. In particular, the functional central limit theorems and the laws of iterated logarithm are obtained. As an application, we obtain the asymptotic properties for the randomized-play-the-winner rule. Based on the Gaussian approximations, we also get some variance estimators for the urn model.

Abstract:Two summation theorems concerning the 2F1(1/2)-series due to Gauss and Bailey will be examined by employing the "coefficient extraction method". Forty infinite series concerning harmonic numbers and binomial/multinomial coefficients will be evaluated in closed form, including eight conjectured ones made by Z.-W. Sun. The presented comprehensive coverage for the harmonic series of convergence rate "1/2" may serve as a reference source for readers.

Abstract:Recently, the explicit evaluation of Gauss sums in the index 2 and 4 cases have been given in several papers (see [2,3,7,8]). In the course of evaluation, the sigh (or unit root) ambiguities are unavoidably occurred. This paper presents another method, different from [7] and [8], to determine the sigh (unit root) ambiguities of Gauss sums in the index 2 case, as well as the ones with odd order in the non-cyclic index 4 case. And we note that the method in this paper are more succinct and effective than [8] and [7].

Abstract:A novel recurrence formula for moments with respect to Müntz-Legendre polynomials is proposed and applied to construct a numerical method for solving generalized Gauss quadratures with power function weight for Müntz systems. These quadrature rules exhibit several properties similar to the classical Gaussian quadratures for polynomial systems, including positive weights, rapid convergence, and others. They are applicable to a wide range of functions, including smooth functions and functions with endpoint singularities, commonly found in integral equations with singular kernels, complex analysis, potential theory, and other areas.

Abstract:We prove an asymptotic formula for a special case of the Gauss hypergeometric function which arises in explicit formulas for moments of Maass form symmetric square L-functions. The resulting formula is uniform in several variables, which is crucial for proving hybrid subconvexity bounds for the L-functions under consideration.

Abstract:We prove a general independent equidistribution result for Gauss sums associated to $n$ monomials in $r$ variable multiplicative characters over a finite field, which generalizes several previous equidistribution results for Gauss and Jacobi sums. As an application, we show that any relation satisfied by these Gauss sums must be a combination of the conjugation relation $G(\chi)G(\overline\chi)=\pm q$, Galois conjugation invariance and the Hasse-Davenport product formula.
