Abstract:This paper presents a new synthetic route to hyperbranched polymer. An arylene bipropiolate monomer, dimethylmethylenebis(1,4-phenylene) bipropiolate, was prepared by a one-step esterification reaction of bisphenol A with propiolic acid. Polycyclotrimrtization of the monomer was effected by reflux in dimethylformamide (DMF), producing a soluble hyperbranched poly(aroxycarbonylphenylene) in a good yield. The polymer was perfectly branched with a degree of branching of 100%.

Abstract:A facile synthetic route to functional hyperbranched polymers is developed. Arylene bipropiolates (HC C-CO2-Ar-O2C-C CH; 1-4) are readily prepared from a one-step esterification reaction between commercially available propiolic acid and arylene diols. Polycyclotrimerizations of 1-4 proceed regioselectively in reflux dimethylformamide (DMF), giving hyperbranched poly[1,3,5-tri(aroxy-carbonyl)phenylene]s (hb-P1-hb-P4) of high molecular weights (M-w up to similar to 8.3 x 10(5)) in high yields (up to 82%). The polymers possess perfect 1,3,5-regiostructures and high degrees of branching (DB similar to 88%). Little weights are lost when the polymers are heated to 390 degrees C under nitrogen or 380 degrees C in air. The polymers are highly transparent, allowing almost all light in the entire visible spectral region to transmit through. Thin solid film of hb-P1 shows high refractive indices (RI = 1.6255-1.681) in the wavelength region of 400-1700 nm, extremely high modified Abbe number (nu(D)' = 1030.7), and very low optical dispersion (D' = 0.00097). Its RI values can be modulated and its thin films can be cross-linked by UV irradiation, enabling ready generation of negative photoresist patterns.

Abstract:We present here a new polymerisation route for the synthesis of new conjugated polymers. Decarbonylative polyadditions of diyne monomers [bis(4-ethynylphenyl) dimethylsilane, 4,4'-diethynylbiphenyl, and 1,2-bis(4-ethynylphenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene] with respective terephthaloyl dichloride and benzene-1,3,5-tricarbonyl trichloride catalyzed by [Rh(cod) Cl](2)/PPh3, [Rh(nbd)Cl]2/PPh3, [RhCp*Cl-2](2)/PPh3, [Rh(cod)(PPh3)(2)]+PF6-, or [Rh(cod)(PPh2)(CH2)(4)(PPh2)]+BF4- (cod 1,5-cyclooctadiene, nbd 2,5-norbornadiene, Cp* = pentamethyl cyclopentadienyl), proceed smoothly, producing linear and hyperbranched poly(arylene chloro Z-vinylene)s (PACVs) in regio- and stereoselective manners with high molecular weights (absolute M-w up to 5.31 x 10(5)) in high yields (up to 92%). Model reactions are designed to confirm the chemical structures of the PACVs. The resultant polymers are processable and enjoy high thermal stability. The linear PAVCs can undergo thermal curing at high temperatures and compared with their hyperbranched counterparts, they are more electronically conjugated due to the para-conjugation effect, as revealed by both experimental and theoretical studies. The light emissions of linear PAVCs with twisted tetraphenylethene units are enhanced by aggregate formation, demonstrating an unusual aggregation-enhanced emission characteristic.

Abstract:New aromatic diyne monomers of 1,4-diethynyl-2,5-(dihexyloxy)benzene (1), 1,6-diethynyl-2-(hexyloxy)naphthalene (2), and 9,9-bis(4-ethynylphenyl)fluorene (3) are synthesized. Their homopolymerizations and copolymerizations with 1-octyne (4) or phenylacetylene (5) are effected by TaBr5-Ph4Sn and CpCo(CO)(2)-hv, giving soluble hyperbranched polyarylenes with high molecular weights (M-w up to similar to 2.9 x 10(5)) in high yields (up to 99%). The structures and properties of the polymers are characterized and evaluated by IR, NMR, UV, PL, and TGA analysis. The polymers show excellent thermal stability (T-d > 400 degrees C and carbonize when pyrolyzed at 900 degrees C. Abstract:A new bis(aroylacetylene) containing triazole and fluorene moieties is synthesized by click chemistry. Polycyclotrimerization of the monomer is catalyzed by piperidine in refluxed dioxane, furnishing a regioregular poly(aroylarylene) in a satisfactory yield. The hyperbranched structure of the polymer is characterized spectroscopically with satisfactory results. The polymer enjoys no metal detriment and is soluble in common organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), chloroform, dichloromethane (DCM), and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF).

Abstract:Synthesis of hyperbranched poly(1,2,3-triazole)s (hb-PTAs) has been a challenge: the AB(2) monomers were inclined to self-oligomerize, and their Cu(I)-catalyzed click polymerizations failed to yield soluble polymers. We tackled the challenge in this work and succeeded in generating hb-PTAs with regioregularity, processability, and functionality. We took an A(2) + B-3 approach and used diazides 2 and triyne 3 as monomers, which are free of self-oligomerization concerns. Thermal polymerizations of 2 and 3 produced regiorandom polymers (hb-r-P1) with high molecular weights in high yields. Metal-mediated regioselective polymerizations afforded soluble 1,4- and 1,5-linked polymers (hb-1,4-P1 and hb-1,5-P1), presenting the first examples of regioregular hb-PTAs with macroscopic processability. The reactions were affected by substrate and catalyst: electron-rich alkyne generally slowed down the cycloaddition reaction, while ruthenium catalysts (Cp*Ru(PPh3)(2)Cl and [Cp*RuCl2](n)) exhibited higher substrate tolerance than copper catalyst [Cu(PPh3)(3)Br]. Regiostructures and regioregularities of the hb-PTAs were determined spectroscopically. Degrees of branching of hb-r-P1 were calculated to be similar to 90%. Conformations of the hb-PTAs were affected by the steric effects between their aromatic units, which in turn affected their solubility, conjugation, luminescence, and aggregation. While the polymer solutions all emitted deep blue light, the films of hb-1,4-P1, hb-1,5-P1 and hb-r-P1 emitted blue, yellow, and white light, respectively, due to the difference in the aggregation of their chromophoric units in the solid state. Fluorescent photoresist patterns with various emission colors were readily generated from photo-cross-linking of the polymers through a nitrene-mediated photolysis mechanism.

Abstract:Ferrocene-decorated hyperbranched poly[1,3,5-tri(aroycarbonyl)phenylene]s ( hb -PTACPs) are prepared in moderate yields with high molecular weights by one-pot polycyclotrimerization of 4,4′-isopropylidenediphenyl bipropiolate with 4-(ferrocenylmethyl)phenyl propiolate in reflux dimethylformamide. All the polymers are soluble and film-forming. They enjoy high thermal stability and lost little of their weight when heated to 300 °C under nitrogen. Thin solid films of the organometallic polymers shows high refractive indices (RI = 1.7038–1.6295) in the wavelength region of 400–1,700 nm. Ceramization of the organometallic hb -PTACPs at high temperature under inert atmosphere gives iron nanoparticles with high magnetizabilities. The organometallic polymers are readily crosslinked under UV irradiation and pyrolysis of the patterned polymer films produces magnetic ceramic patterns with good shape retention.

Abstract:The atom-economical alkyne polyhydrothiolations of aromatic diynes (1) and dithiol (2) catalyzed by rhodium complexes proceed smoothly under mild conditions at room temperature in a regioselective manner, producing sole anti-Markovnikov products of poly(vinylene sulfide)s (3) with high molecular weights (M-w up to 31500) and stereoregularities (E content up to 100%) in high yields (up to 95.2%). The stereostructures of the polymers are readily tuned by engineering control on the sequential addition of monomers during the polymerization process and postmanipulation by light irradiation. All the poly(vinylene sulfide)s are soluble in common organic solvents and exhibit good film-forming ability and high optical transparency. The functional pendants in 1 have endowed 3 with novel properties such as aggregation-enhanced emission characteristics, optical limiting to harsh laser pulses, and ceramization capability to semiconducting nanoparticles. The polymers are thermal and UV curable, enabling the fabrication of fluorescent photopatterns. Their thin films show high refractive indices (n(D) = 1.75-1.70) and low optical dispersions (down to 0.006) at telecom important wavelengths. Their refractive indices vary with their stereostructures and can be modulated by UV irradiation.

Abstract:ABn-type monomers have been widely used for the synthesis of hyperbranched polymers. These monomers, however, suffer from the problems associated with the tendency of their mutually reactive A and B functional groups toward self-oligomerization. We have explored the possibility of synthesizing hyperbranched polymers using An-type monomers, which are stable and easy to prepare and handle, with some being even commercially available. In particular, we have tried to open new synthetic routes to hyperbranched polymers using diynes and triynes as monomers. We have developed metallic [TaBr5, Cp∗Ru(PPh3)2Cl, etc.] and nonmetallic catalysts (piperidine, DMF, etc.) for polycyclotrimerization, polycycloaddition and polycoupling of the acetylenic monomers. We have synthesized a variety of new hyperbranched polymers including polyarylenes, polytriazoles and polydiynes with high molecular weights and excellent solubility in high yields. The polymers exhibit an array of functional properties such as sensitive photonic response, high light refractivity, large optical nonlinearity, high thermal stability, strong optical limiting power and unusual aggregation-enhanced light emission. Utilizing these unique properties, we succeeded in generating fluorescent images, honeycomb patterns, polymer nanotubes, ferromagnetic ceramics, and nanoparticle catalysts.

Abstract:Regioselective 1,3-dipolar polycycloadditions of tetraphenylethene (TPE)-containing diazides 1-3 and bis(aroylacetylene) 4 are initiated by simple heating, affording poly(aroyltriazole)s (PATAs) PI-PIII with high molecular weights in high yields. The PATAs are completely soluble in common organic solvents and stable at temperatures up to 358 degrees C. Thanks to their TPE units, the polymers show aggregation-induced emission and work as explosive sensors with high sensitivity. The PATAs are optically transparent in the whole visible spectral region. Their refractive indexes can be tuned to a great extent (Delta n approximate to 0.08) by simply changing their alkyl spacer lengths. The modified Abbe numbers of the PATAs are very high (up to 273), indicative of very low optical dispersions in the telecommunication-important wavelength region. UV irradiation through a photomask quenches the light emissions of the polymers, enabling the generation of two-dimensional fluorescent images without development. The polymers can be readily photo-crosslinked, yielding three-dimensional patterns with high resolutions.
Hyperbranched Conjugative Macromolecules Constructed from Triple-Bond Building Blocks

Abstract:Polycyclotrimerization and polycoupling of acetylenic monomers respectively furnish hyperbranched polyarylenes and polyynes with high molecular weights (up to 1 X 10(6)) in high yields (up to 99.9%). The polymers possess low intrinsic viscosities and high thermal stabilities, losing little of their weights when heated to > 400 degrees C. Upon pyrolysis at > 800 degrees C, the polymers graphitize with high char yields (up to 86%). Hyperbranched polyarylenes efficiently emit deep-blue to blue-green lights with fluorescence quantum yields up to 98% and strongly attenuate intense laser pulses with optical power-limiting performances superior to that Of C-60, a well-known optical limiter. Poly(alkenephenylenes), poly(aroylarylenes) and polyynes are readily cross-linkable by UV irradiation, serving as excellent photoresist materials for the generation of patterns with nanometer resolution. Thin films of hyperbranched polyynes exhibit very high refractive indexes (n up to 1.86). The internal and terminal acetylene moieties of the polyynes readily form complexes with cobalt carbonyls, which can be transformed into soft ferromagnetic ceramics with high magnetic susceptibilities (M-s up to ca. 118 emu/g) and near-zero magnetic losses.

Abstract:A hyperbranched poly(aroylarylene) containing triphenylamine (TPA) moiety (hb-P1) is synthesized by metal-free polycyclotrimerization of N,N-bis(4-ethynylcarbonylphenyl)aniline (1) in a high yield (86%) with a perfect 1,3,5-regioregularity. The polymer is soluble in common organic solvents such as THF and chloroform and is thermally stable, losing 5% of its weight when heated to a temperature as high as similar to 450 degrees C. The polymer is fluorescent and solvatochromic, whose emission color changes from similar to 455 nm (blue) in toluene to 549 nm (yellow) in DMF. The polymer exhibits a large two-photon absorption cross-section due to the intramolecular charge transfer between its electron-donating TPA and electron-withdrawing 1,3,5-tricarbonylbenzene groups.
Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Linear and Hyperbranched Conjugated Polymers

Abstract:Azo-functionalized hyperbranched polymers 1 and 2, and linear polyacetylene 3 are synthesized by palladium-catalyzed coupling of triiodoarenes with a diethynylazobenzene, and post functionalization, respectively. These polymers are soluble, film-forming, and morphologically stable (T-g > 180 degrees C). The poled polymer films of 1 and 2 exhibit high second-harmonic generation coefficients (d(33) up to 177 pm/V), thanks to the chromophore-separation and site-isolation effects of hyperbranched architectural structure of the polymers in the three-dimensional space. The poled film of polymer 3 shows the trade-off of nonlinearity-transparency-orientation thermal! stability. The poled films are all orientationally and thermally stable due to the facile cross-linking of the multiple acetylenic triple bonds in the hyperbranched polymer and the rigid backbone in the linear polyacetylene, respectively.

Abstract:Ferrocene-containing hyperbranched poly(aroylarylene)s are prepared in satisfactory yields by one-pot copolycyclotrimerization of bis(aroylacetylene)s with a ferrocene-containing monoyne. The ferrocene content of the polymers can be varied by changing the monomer feed ratio, and copolymers with up to 41 mol% of ferrocene moiety can be readily prepared. All the polymers are thermally stable, losing little of their weights when heated to 340 °C.

Abstract:Acetylenic polymers are a group of specialty materials with novel properties. In this paper, recent progress in the development of functional acetylenic polymers is summarized. These polymers are synthesized through different polymerization approaches such as Sonogashira polycoupling, decarbonylative chloroarylation polyaddition, and polycyclotrimerization. Efforts in the development of new monomers and catalyst exploration as well as reaction optimization have lead to a large quantity of linear and hyperbranched polymers with high molecular weights and good processability. The polymer functionalization is realized by incorporating functional units into the monomer structures, which endow the resulting polymers with fascinating properties such as aggregation-induced emission, optical nonlinearity, light refractivity, photosensitivity, photopatternability, redoxactivity, and magnetism.

Abstract:Polymers synthesized from acetylenic monomers often possess electronically unsaturated fused rings and thus show versatile optoelectronic properties and advanced functionalities. To expand the family of acetylenic polymers, development of new catalyst systems and synthetic routes is critically important. We summarize herein recent research progress on development of new methodologies towards functional polymers using alkyne building blocks since 2014. The polymerizations are categorized by the number of monomer components, namely homopolymerizations, two-component polymerizations, and multicomponent polymerizations. The properties and applications of acetylenic polymers, such as aggregation-induced emission, fluorescent photopatterning, light refraction, chemosensing, mechanochromism, chain helicity, etc., are also discussed.

Abstract:The C-H activation has been a hot research area in organic chemistry, and the most difficult one is the C(sp(3))-H activation. Although the C-H activation has been introduced to the research of synthetic polymer chemistry, the polymerization developed based on C(sp(3))-H activation is rarely reported, which will enrich the tools for the preparation of functional polymers. In this work, palladium/benzoic acid catalyzed polymerization of internal diynes and diols through C(sp(3))-H activation was successfully established. Regio-and stereoregular functional poly(allylic ether)s with 100% E-isomers and high weight average molecular weights (M-w up to 33200) were prepared in excellent yield (98%). The reaction mechanism was unveiled with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the thin films of polymers display high refractive indices and low optical dispersions. The polymer containing tetraphenylethene moiety displays the aggregation-enhanced emission feature and could be used to generate 2D fluorescent photopattern. Thus, this work not only establishes a powerful polymerization based on C(sp(3))-H activation, but also furnishes functional polymers for diverse applications.
Heteroaromatic Hyperbranched Polyelectrolytes: Multicomponent Polyannulation and Photodynamic Biopatterning

Abstract:We reported an efficient multicomponent polyannulation for in situ generation of heteroaromatic hyperbranched polyelectrolytes by using readily accessible internal diynes and low-cost, commercially available arylnitriles, NaSbF6, and H2O/AcOH. The polymers were obtained in excellent yields (up to 99%) with extraordinary high molecular weights (M-w up to 1.011 x 10(6)) and low polydispersity indices. The resulting polymers showed good processibility and high quantum yields with tunable emission in the solid state, making them ideal materials for highly ordered fluorescent photopatterning. These hyperbranched polyelectrolytes also possessed strong ability to generate reactive oxygen species, which allowed their applications in efficient bacterial killing and customizable photodynamic patterning of living organisms in a simple and cost-effective way.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers, as one kind of three dimensional macromolecules with globular and dendritic architectures, have unique properties of good solubility, low viscosity, topological structure, a lot of functional groups, etc. Over the past decades, the hyperbranched polymers have attracted more and more attention and been widely applied in diverse areas including coatings, additives, biomaterials, supramolecular chemistry, nanoscience and technology, photoelectricmaterials, and so on. Click polymerization with the advantages of facile monomers accessibility, mild reaction conditions and high reaction efficiency has been developed into a sort of powerful polymerization tool for the synthesis of polymers with well-defined molecular structures and advanced functional properties. This method has also been extensively used in the synthesis of hyperbranched polymers. This review mainly summarizes the progress on the synthesis of the hyperbranched polymers via alkyne-based click polymerizations in the last 5 years. The Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne click polymerization could readily produce 1,4-regioregular hyperbranched polytriazoles, whereas the Ru(II)-catalyzed azide-alkyne click polymerization could generate 1,5-regioregular hyperbranched polytriazoles. Meanwhile, the azide-alkyne click polymerizations under metal-free conditions were also developed through the ingenious design of monomers. Metal-free click polymerization of activated alkyne and azide monomers could efficiently produce hyperbranched polytriazoles with fraction of 1,4-isomers up to 91.7%. The obtained polytriazoles are thermally stable and well soluble in most common solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran, dichloromethane, N,N-dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulfoxide. Moreover, the photo- and thermo-initiated as well as spontaneous thiol-yne click polymerizations could be used to facilely prepare sulfur-containing hyperbranched polymers. The thiol-yne addition process could be fine-tuned by the control of the polymerization condition, and hyperbranched polymers with diverse topological structures could be provided. The properties and applications including aggregation-induced emission, sensitive explosive detection, self-healing, high refractive index and fluorescent patterning etc, of resultant hyperbranched polymers were also briefly reviewed. In addition, the promising opportunities and directions in this area were also discussed.
