Abstract:Two novel rhodamine derivatives were designed and synthesized. They were successfully characterized by HR-MS, 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR. They were found to exhibit a reversible colorimetric response and exhibit high selectivity and sensitivity for Hg(II) ion over other commonly coexistent metal ions. Their selectivity is excellent, and the detection of Hg(II) at ppb level is possible. The colorimetric and fluorescent response to Hg(II) can be conveniently detected even by the naked eye, which provides a facile method for visual detection of Hg(II).

Abstract:A new fluorescent ‘‘on–off’’ chemosensor for Hg2+initiated by a derivative of rhodamine B was designed and synthesized. Compound 1 exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for Hg2+over other commonly coexistent metal ions in aqueous media. Upon the addition of Hg2+, the spirocyclic ring of probe is opened and a significant enhancement of visible color and fluorescence in the range of 500–600 nm is observed. The colorimetric and fluorescent response to Hg2+can be conveniently detected by the naked eye, which provides a facile method for visual detection of Hg2+. From the molecular structure and spectral results of 1, an irreversible, hydrolysis, desulfurization reaction mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:A water-soluble fluorescent probe for Hg(2+) based on a rhodamine B derivative was designed and synthesized. The new probe showed reversible colorimetric and fluorescent response to Hg(2+) in a fully aqueous solution. The probe exhibited real-time detection of Hg(2+) with high selectivity in media containing less than 1% organic cosolvent. Furthermore, bioimaging studies indicated that the new probe was cell permeable and suitable for the real-time imaging of Hg(2+) in living cells by confocal microscopy.

Abstract:In this paper, we reported a new rhodamine derivative bearing 2,4-dichloroquinazoline as a selective fluorescent chemosensor for Hg2+. The ring-opening process of spirolactam enabled the large fluorescent enhancement and calorimetric change by Hg2+ induced configuration transformation of the rhodamine. Moreover, the fluorescence changes of the chemosensor were dramatically specific for Hg2+ in the presence of other metal ions, which could meet the selective requirements for practical application. Under optimized experimental conditions, the linear response range covered the concentration range of Hg2+ from 0 to 1.0 x 10(-6) M, and the limit of detection was calculated to be 2.7 x 10(-8) M. In addition, the probe was also successfully applied to the determination of Hg2+ in water samples, test strips and living cells. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Upon addition of Hg2+ to its solution, the thiosemicarbazide moiety of I undergoes an irreversible desulfurization reaction to form the corresponding 1,3,4-oxadiazole (II), a colorful and fluorescent product, causing instantaneous development of visible color and strong fluorescence emission. Based on this mechanism, a fluorogenic probe for Hg2+ was developed. The fluorescence increases linearly with the Hg2+ concentration up to 0.8 mu mol L-1 with the detection limit of 9.4 nmol L- (3 sigma).

Abstract:A rhodamine B thiohydrazide-based fluorescent turn-on chemosensor (RN2) for Hg2+ was designed and described. RN2 exhibited very high sensitivity and selectivity towards Hg2+ over other metal ions. Due to the opening of the spiro ring in rhodamine B caused by Hg2+, the RN2 displayed selective ‘off–on’ type fluorescence enhancement and a distinct color change. The results of biological imaging studies demonstrated that this probe was cell permeable and could be used as a fluorescent probe for monitoring Hg2+ in living cells. The as-prepared chemosensor was also successfully applied to detect Hg2+ in environmental water samples.

Abstract:An easily prepared "turn-on" -type fluorescent chemosensor for mercury based on Rhodamine-B, which exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity over other metal ions in aqueous systems, was obtained. The distinctive wavelengths in the UV/ Vis absorption range can sense Hg 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Fe 3+ separately. Furthermore, this "turn-on"-type fluorescent sensor, upon the addition of Hg 2+ over other competitive species, was successfully applied to bioimaging in yeast and HeLa cells. The potential of these types of chemosensors for use in environmental and biological systems is great.

Abstract:An effective Hg2+-specific probe (1) was designed and prepared based on a rhodamine–nitrobenzoxadiazole conjugate. The sensing behavior of this probe was studied by UV–visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. With Hg2+, the probe displayed both colorimetric responses and ratiometric changes. The ratio of the absorption intensities at 525 and 460nm for the two chromophores in the probe increased from 0.17 to 0.46. The probe exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Hg2+ over other metal ions, which could be attributed to the Hg2+-triggered ring opening of the spirolactam of the rhodamine moiety and the formation of a 1:1 1-Hg2+ complex.

Abstract:Two novel rhodamine-based fluorescence enhanced molecular probes (RA1 and RA2) were synthesized, which were both designed as comparative fluoroionophore and chromophore for the optical detection of Hg2+. The recognizing behaviors were investigated both experimentally and computationally. They exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity for Hg2+ over other commonly coexistent metal ions in CH3CN/H2O (1:1, V/V) solution. Test shows that hydroxy benzene of rich electron was beneficial to the chelate of Hg2+ with sensors. The detection limit was measured to be at least 0.14 µmol/L. After addition of Hg2+, the color changed from colourless to pink, which was easily detected by the naked eye in both solution and hydrogel sensor.

Abstract:In the present work, a new rhodamine B Schiff base 3′,6′-bis(diethylamino)-2-(2-oxoethylideneamino)-spiro[isoindoline-1,9′-xanithen]-3-one (RHO) was designed and easily prepared as a Hg2+ fluorescent and colorimetric probe, which could selectively and sensitively detect Hg2+ in 7:3 (v/v) ethanol–water solution by showing enhanced fluorescence emission. Meanwhile distinct color change from colorless to pink also provided “naked eye” detection of Hg2+ owing to the ring opening of spirolactam of the rhodamine derivative. Other ions including alkali and alkaline earth metal ions (K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+), and some transition metal ions (Ni2+, Co2+, Fe2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Ag+, Pb2+, Cr3+, and Fe3+) could hardly induce any interference. For further use in practical applications in optical ion sensing devices, we immobilized the probe onto silica spheres to explore its functionality in inorganic and organic hybrid materials. As a result, excellent discrimination of Hg2+ from other cations could also be obtained.

Abstract:A fluorescent probe 1 for Hg2+ based on a rhodamine–coumarin conjugate was designed and synthesized. Probe 1 exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity for sensing Hg2+, and about a 24-fold increase in fluorescence emission intensity is observed upon binding excess Hg2+ in 50% water/ethanol buffered at pH 7.24. The fluorescence response to Hg2+ is attributed to the 1:1 complex formation between probe 1 and Hg2+, which has been utilized as the basis for the selective detection of Hg2+. Besides, probe 1 was also found to show a reversible dual chromo- and fluorogenic response toward Hg2+ likely due to the chelation-induced ring opening of rhodamine spirolactam. The analytical performance characteristics of the proposed Hg2+-sensitive probe were investigated. The linear response range covers a concentration range of Hg2+ from 8.0×10−8 to 1.0×10−5molL−1 and the detection limit is 4.0×10−8molL−1. The determination of Hg2+ in both tap and river water samples displays satisfactory results.

Abstract:A coumarin rhodamine based ratiometric fluorescent probe was designed and successfully synthesized. The probe can detect Hg2+ with high selectivity over other metal ions and high sensitivity with the most sensitive readout signal in aqueous solution. There is a good linear relationship between the fluorescence ratio I-587/I-478 and the concentration of Hg2+ ranging from 0.5 uM to 1.5 uM and the detection limit was calculated to be as low as 3.2 nM. In addition, the probe can quicldy detect over a wide pH range from 4 to 11. Furthermore, the probe is cell membrane permeable and can detect Hg2+ in living cells. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Three new rhodamine based probes 1, 2, 3 were synthesized and acted as fluorescence probes for Hg2+ detection in Tris - HCl/C2H5OH (v: v = 3: 7, 10 mM, pH = 7.2). Hg2+ induced a colorless solution of probes 1, 2, 3 to turn to naked-eye visible pink with a 44 - fold fluorescence enhancement at 576 nm. Probes 1, 2, 3 are highly selective to Hg2+ over other tested cations with the detection limits are 18 nM, 16 nM, 56 nM, respectively. What's more, the binding constants between probes 1, 2, 3 and Hg2+ are 5.0 x 10(6) M-1, 1.8 x 10 6 M -1 1.5 x 10(6) M-1, respectively. The different detection limits and binding constants of probes 1, 2, 3 and Hg2+ may depend on the coordination of probes 1,2, 3. The recognition mechanism of probes 1,2, 3 towards Hg2+ is determinated by ESI - MS, DFT and indicates that a ring-opening of the spirolactam unit and formed complexes between probes 1, 2, 3, resulting in chromogenic and fluorogenic changes. The probes 1, 2, 3 could be applied in both environmental and Hg(2+ )polluted samples due to the instantly and reversible "off-on" Hg2+ response, well cell permeability, cell imaging ability.
A Selective and Sensitive "Naked-Eye" Rhodamine-Based "Turn-On" Sensor for Recognition of Hg2+ Ion in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:A selective and sensitive "naked-eye" rhodamine-based "turn-on" chemosensor for detection of Hg2+ ion over other metal ions such as Ni2+, Ca2+, Ba2+, Cs+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Mg2+, K+, Ag+, Hg2+, Co2+, and Pb2+ in aqueous solution was prepared. Meanwhile, a new method for the synthesis of rhodamine amide directly from rhodamine hydrazide in the presence of NaH was reported for the first time. It was observed that once Hg2+ ion was added to the sensor 4, a 91.4-fold enhancement of the absorption at 570 nm was observed. Its selectivity toward Hg2+ ion was very high, and little interference was detected for other commonly coexistent metal ions. The fluorescent intensity was almost a constant minimal value when pH = 5-8 in aqueous solution. It demonstrated that Hg2+ could be detected at least down to 3 x 10(-8) M. Moreover, the Hg2+-promoted selective desulfurization reaction was further confirmed by MS spectra. The present probe could be used to determine Hg2+ ion concentrations in aqueous environments. Abstract:Quinoline-appended rhodamine B thiohydrazide based fluorescent probe was designed and applied in fluorescent detections of mercury ions in both aqueous solution and living cells. The signal change of the probe is based on a specific metal ion induced reversible ring-opening mechanism of a rhodamine B thiohydrazide. The probe exhibits a dynamic response concentration range for Hg2+ from 1.0 × 10−8 to 1.0 × 10−5 M with a detection limit of 8.5 × 10−9 M. The fluorescent probe is pH independent in medium condition and exhibits high selectivity over other common metal ions.

Abstract:A selective and sensitive fluorescent chemosensor for Hg2+, which was composed of two aminonaphthalimide fluorophores and a receptor of 2,6-bis(aminomethyl)pyridine, was synthesized through the reaction of 2,6-bis(chloromethyl)pyridine and N-[2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethyl]-4-piperazino-1,8-naphthalimide. The chemosensor showed an about 17-fold increase in fluorescence quantum yield upon addition of 1 equiv of Hg2+ in neutral buffer aqueous solution, and the other common metal ions did not notably disturb the detection of Hg2+.

Abstract:A novel rhodamine-based Hg2+ chemosensor P2 containing polyether was readily synthesized and investigated, which displayed high selectivity and sensitivity for Hg2+. Because of good water-solubility of polyther, the rhodamine-based chemosensor containing polyether can be used in aqueous solution. The sensor responded rapidly to Hg2+ in pure water solutions with a 1:1 stoichiometry. Meanwhile, it indicated excellent adaptability and also the responsiveness.
