Abstract:The authors demonstrate a photonic link for stable radio frequency (RF) dissemination over fibre based on passive phase compensation with an active-assisted control method. A variable optical delay line is introduced in the transmitting link for active-assisted phase compensation. After active-assisted compensation, the residual jitter is <500 fs. Experimentally, an RF signal at a frequency of 5 GHz is successfully transmitted over a 20-km fibre link, with the stability of 2.49 x 10(-14) at 1 s and 9.19 x 10(-18) at 10(4) s.

Abstract:We developed a new radio frequency dissemination system based on an optical fiber link. A 1.55 μm mode-locked fiber laser was used as optical transmitter in the system. To actively reduce the phase fluctuation induced by the fiber length variations with high resolution, we proposed a novel compensation technique. In our technique, we directly control the phase of optical pulses generated by the laser to compensate the fluctuation. The phase-controlling method is based on both pump power modulation and cavity length adjusting. We performed the transfer in a 22-km outdoor fiber link, with a transfer stability of 3.7 × 10(-14) at 1 s and 6.6 × 10(-18) at 16000 s. The integrated timing jitter in 24 hours was reduced from 14 ps to 35 fs.

Abstract:A dispersion-free scheme for stable multi-access radio frequency dissemination in a fibre loop link is proposed and demonstrated. The phase jitter and dispersion-induced power fading are suppressed simultaneously by transmitting different single-band signals in opposite propagating directions. Experimentally, a 2.5 GHz radio frequency signal is steadily transmitted to different remote sites, with phase deviations less than 0.6 ps over 15,000 s.

Abstract:We report a novel technique for highly stable transfer of a frequency comb over long optical fiber link. The technique implements an electronic compensation loop to cancel out the phase fluctuations that is introduced by the fiber. We utilized this technique to transfer a stable microwave frequency through a 20 km urban fiber link and an 80 km open air fiber link respectively. For the 20 km urban fiber link, the active compensation system reduced the phase fluctuation from 75 mrad (118 ps) to 4 mrad (6.3 ps) in 48 hours, and the frequency stability was improved by three orders of magnitude. For the 80 km open air fiber link, the active compensation system reduced the rms phase fluctuation from 580 mrad (914 ps) to 10 mrad (16 ps) in 24 hours, and the frequency stability was improved by two orders of magnitude. Abstract:Optical fiber communication systems play an important role in broadband signal transmissions, where the nonlinear dynamics in the long-haul optical fiber transmissions greatly degrade the transmission performance and limit the fiber capacity and reach. This paper analyzes and compensates for the nonlinear dynamics in the long-haul optical fiber transmission with the delay-based optoelectronic reservoir computing (RC) scheme, which provides benefits like time-adaptive tracking, low-complexity and hardware implementation potentials. The generalization of the analysis and compensation schemes from the traditional amplitude-modulated PAM signal to the amplitude-phase-modulated QAM signal is achieved by signal preprocessing. In the numerical study, the proposed RC-based fiber dynamics compensation scheme, with fiber reach from 1400km to 3000km, shows considerable performance with the digital backpropagation scheme, which is always used as the benchmark for nonlinear compensation of long-haul fiber transmissions. The realization complexity is much reduced with the RC-based schemes, which has provided a new dawn for optics-based nonlinear analysis and compensations.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a radio frequency dissemination system via fiber link. An electric phase-shifter is used to active compensate the phase error in the transfer process. Furthermore, an improved error signal extraction component is used to extract the phase error induced via the fiber link. The system can compensate large phase range fluctuation rapidly and precisely. An experiment has been demonstrated with this structure to disseminate a 100 MHz frequency through 100 km. The relative frequency stability is 3 × 10(-14) at 1 s and 3 × 10(-17) at 4000 s. It means this scheme can be used to transfer the most stable microwave sources through fiber link.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel scheme of stable radio frequency (RF) dissemination in a multi-access radio-over-fiber (ROF) link. Unlike the active compensation scheme based on a phase-locking loop, the proposed scheme provides fast responses and infinite dynamic ranges with a passive phase fluctuation cancellation (PPFC) approach. In our experiment, a 2.5-GHz signal is steadily distributed to a remote end through an arbitrary user site in a 25-km optical fiber link. The stability of the recovered signals at the user site and the remote end are evaluated. By using the phase correction scheme, the peak–peak phase excursion is reduced from 140 to 4 ps at the user site and 160 to 4 ps at the remote end, respectively. The achieved relative residual frequency instabilities are 1.4117×10−16∕104s and 1.6503×10−16∕104s at the user site and the remote end, respectively.

Abstract:A photonic phase-stabled transmission of broadband signal based on passive frequency mixing compensation is proposed. The mechanism of jitter compensation of aimed broadband signal transmission relies on an adaptive cancellation by mixing two signals under approximately the same external time jittering. A theoretical model is built and the frequency dependent jitter suppression is analyzed and verified. Compared with previous methods, the proposed photonic phase-stabled transmission of broadband signal can withstand faster jittering frequency up to 1 kHz. The experimental results show that the proposed method can significantly reduce the phase drift of the broadband signal of 400 MHz bandwidth. The measured overlapping Allan deviation at the center frequency of 7.2 GHz shows a stability of $3.53\times 10 ^{-14}$ at 100 s average time.

Abstract:A novel method, to the best of our knowledge, of fiber transfer delay (FTD) measurement based on phase quantization and delay synthesis is proposed and demonstrated. By detecting the differential phase shifts of a set of frequency-multiplied RF signals transmission through the fiber link with and without the FTD under the test, the ${2}\pi $2π phase ambiguity problem can be solved. To avoid the phase quantization error near the digital quantization boundary, a self-check and error-correction method is proposed so as to greatly improve the reliability of measurement. In the experiment, the measurement repeatability around 0.018 ps within a period of 80 s is achieved for a back-to-back fiber link, and a test resolution of 0.03 ps is proved with a motorized tunable delay line. The system is available for measurement of a large FTD range up to 100 µs with no dead zone.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a frequency transfer over 1000 km of fiber by exploiting the optical frequency comb. Through the feedback of the phase shifter, active phase noise cancellation is achieved. The fractional frequency instability of 2.4×10−15 at 1 s and 1.1×10−18 at 10000 s are measured respectively. The results support ultrastable frequency transfer applications via long-haul fiber links.

Abstract:We demonstrate precise microwave frequency dissemination of a hydrogen maser synchronized frequency comb over a 120 km commercial fiber link. The phase noise was compensated by a feed-forward digital compensation scheme, where the value of locally detected phase noise was first transmitted to the remote user end via a wavelength division multiplexing channel in the same fiber link and then compensated directly at the user end. Abstract:In this letter, we propose a low-delay passive compensation system for stable radio frequency (RF) transmission over fiber links. Different from previous technology, the proposed structure requires only two trips of transmission, decreasing compensation delay and enhancing synchronization performance. The method utilizes a mixer to implement phase conjugation and compensation for the phase fluctuation in the communication link and a phase-locked loop (PLL) is added to the remote end to reduce the loop bandwidth, enhancing the transmission distance. Real-world experiments conducted over a 64.4 km metropolitan area network (MAN) link in Beijing demonstrated the system’s capability to transmit stable RF signals.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates the coherent optical frequency transfer over a 60 km fiber link between Innovation Academy for Precision Measurement Science and Technology , Chinese Academy of Sciences and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. A 1560 nm ultra-stable laser is used as the transfer laser, and an acousto-optic modulator is employed to actively compensate for the phase noise introduced by optical fibers to achieve noise suppression of 67 dB at 1 Hz Fourier frequency. The end-to-end transfer of the all-fiber structure is adopted by the system, and tracking oscillators are used to suppress the amplitude fluctuation of the heating signals caused by fiber polarization change. In this way, the system can operate without interruption all day. The optical frequency offset introduced by the link is at the order of magnitude of 10 -74 in the four-day measurement, and the frequency instability is measured to he 2.4 X 10(-17) in 1 s, 6. 6 X 10(-20) in 1000 s, and 6. 5 X 10(-)(23) in 65000 s. This result demonstrates the system is applicable for remote optical clock comparison.

Abstract:In the long-haul fiber link, the phase noise introduced by erbium-doped fibers amplifiers (EDFAs) cannot be compensated. Its influence is very important and should be considered in long-haul fiber link frequency dissemination. In this letter, we disseminate a high-precision radio frequency signal to a simulated remote site over a long fiber link in the laboratory. The phase noise introduced by EDFA is analyzed. A fiber re-circulating loop with optical switch is constructed to test the performance of frequency dissemination system in the case of cascade using EDFAs. The system can obtain the phase error between the returned signal and the reference signal based on a 3000-km fiber re-circulating loop. The residual frequency instability after phase noise compensation reaches $3.5 \times 10^{\mathrm {-13}}$ at 1 s and $2.0 \times 10^{\mathrm {-15}}$ at 4000 s. Our method provides the basis for long-haul precision frequency dissemination and frequency synchronization between remote sites.

Abstract:Precision time synchronization between two remote sites is desired in many applications such as global positioning satellite systems, long-baseline interferometry, coherent radar detection and fundamental physics constant measurements. The recently developed frequency dissemination technologies based on optical fiber link have improved the transfer instability to the level of 10−19/day at remote location. Therefore it is possible to keep clock oscillation at remote locations continuously corrected, or to reproduce a “virtual” clock on the remote location. However the initial alignment and the correction of 1 pps timing signal from time to time are still required, besides the highly stabilized clock frequency transfer between distant locations. Here we demonstrate a time synchronization based on an ultra-stable frequency transfer system via 120-km commercial fiber link by transferring an optical frequency comb. Both the phase noise compensation in frequency dissemination and temporal basis alignment in time synchronization were implemented by a feed-forward digital compensation (FFDC) technique. The fractional frequency instability was measured to be 6.18 × 10−20 at 2000 s. The timing deviation of time synchronization was measured to be 0.6 ps in 1500 s. This technique also can be applied in multi-node fiber network topology.
Robust optical frequency transfer in a noisy urban fiber network

Abstract:Optical fibers have been recognized as one of the most promising host material for high phase coherence optical frequency transfer over thousands of kilometers. In the pioneering work, the active phase noise cancellation (ANC) technique has been widely used for suppressing the fiber phase noise introduced by the environmental perturbations, in which an ideal phase detector with high resolution and unlimited detection range is needed to extract the fiber phase noise, in particular for noisy fiber links. We demonstrate the passive phase noise cancellation (PNC) technique without the need of phase detector could be preferable for noisy fiber links. To avoid the effect of the radio frequency (RF) from the time base at the local site in the conventional active or passive phase noise cancellation techniques, here we introduce a fiber-pigtailed acousto-optic modulator (AOM) with two diffraction order outputs (0 and +1 order) with properly allocating the AOM-driving frequencies allowing to cancel the time base effect. Using this technique, we demonstrate transfer of coherent light through a 260 km noisy urban fiber link. The results show the effect of the RF reference can be successfully removed. After being passively compensated, {we demonstrate a fractional frequency instability of $4.9\times10^{-14}$ at the integration time of 1 s and scales down to $10^{-20}$ level at 10,000 s in terms of modified Allan deviation over the 260 km noisy urban fiber link}. The frequency uncertainty of the retrieved light after transferring through this noise-compensated fiber link relative to that of the input light achieves $(0.41\pm4.7)\times10^{-18}$. The proposed technique opens a way to a broad distribution of an ultrastable frequency reference with high coherence without any effects coming from the RF reference and enables a wide range of applications beyond metrology over fiber networks.

The Effect of Optical Phase Conjugation on Inter- and Intra-Channel Nonlinearities in Ultrahigh-Speed Transmission Systems

Abstract:We demonstrate that all the inter- and intra-channel nonlinear impairments can be eliminated simultaneously by optical phase conjugation (OPC) in a power-symmetry system. However, for practical systems without power-symmetry, it is found that the effects of OPC on various nonlinearities are different in the same link. Even some nonlinearities are suppressed and some are enhanced. Therefore, optimizing the transmission link with OPC to suppress the dominant nonlinearity is demanded. By using 1-km-long highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) and tuning the pump wavelength near the zero dispersion wavelength of the HNLF, we experimentally generate the phase conjugation of the dispersed ~300 fs pulses. OPC with conversion efficiency of about -16 dB and conversion bandwidth of about 38 nm is obtained.

Abstract:We report on a stable radio frequency (RF) transfer experiment via 100 km metropolitan optical fiber link in Beijing area. The link connecting Daniufang and Fangzhuang is composed of two parallel 50-km dark optical fibers with a total loss of 31 dB. The dual phase locked loops (dual-PLL) configuration is designed in our stable fiber-optic RF transfer system. The measured fractional frequency stability (ADEV) of 2.4 GHz RF signal transmission system approaches 1.7 x 10(-14) @1 s and 2.5 x 10(-17) @10000 s.
