Abstract:A dispersion-free scheme for stable multi-access radio frequency dissemination in a fibre loop link is proposed and demonstrated. The phase jitter and dispersion-induced power fading are suppressed simultaneously by transmitting different single-band signals in opposite propagating directions. Experimentally, a 2.5 GHz radio frequency signal is steadily transmitted to different remote sites, with phase deviations less than 0.6 ps over 15,000 s.

Abstract:Recently, remarkable efforts have been made in developing wireless communication systems at ultrahigh data rates, with radio frequency (RF) carriers in the millimeter wave (30-300 GHz) and/or in the terahertz (THz, >300 GHz) bands. Converged technologies combining both the electronics and the photonics show great potential to provide feasible solutions with superior performance compared to conventional RF technologies. However, technical challenges remain to be overcome in order to support high data rates with considerably feasible wireless distances for practical applications, particularly in the THz region. In this work, we present an experimental demonstration of a single-channel THz radio-over-fiber (RoF) system operating at 350 GHz, achieving beyond 100 Gbit/s data rate over a 10-km fiber plus a >20-m wireless link, without using any THz amplifiers. This achievement is enabled by using an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signal with a probabilistic-shaped 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation format, a pair of highly directive Cassegrain antennas, and advanced digital signal processing techniques. This work pushes the THz RoF technology one step closer to ultrahigh-speed indoor wireless applications and serves as an essential segment of the converged fiber-wireless access networks in the beyond 5G era.

Abstract:We demonstrate a fiber-based multiple-access ultrastable frequency dissemination scheme over an 83 km fiber link. As a performance test, we reproduce the disseminated 9.1 GHz radio-frequency modulation signal at an arbitrary point in the dissemination channel. Relative frequency stability of 7 x 10(-14)/s and 5 x 10(-18)/day is obtained. Highly synchronized frequency signals can be regenerated along the entire fiber pathway and its applications are discussed. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The authors demonstrate a photonic link for stable radio frequency (RF) dissemination over fibre based on passive phase compensation with an active-assisted control method. A variable optical delay line is introduced in the transmitting link for active-assisted phase compensation. After active-assisted compensation, the residual jitter is <500 fs. Experimentally, an RF signal at a frequency of 5 GHz is successfully transmitted over a 20-km fibre link, with the stability of 2.49 x 10(-14) at 1 s and 9.19 x 10(-18) at 10(4) s.

Abstract:Over the past decade, fiber based frequency dissemination has achieved significant progresses in following aspects. To study the dissemination stability and phase noise specifications of the fiber-cascaded RF frequency dissemination system, we perform a lab-top experiment using three sets of RF modulated frequency dissemination systems. They are linked by 50 km + 50 km +45 km fiber spools. The dissemination stabilities of each segments and whole system are measured simultaneously. After that, the phase noise of each segment is also measured and the result shows that the phase noise spectrums of recovered frequency signal can be optimized via narrow band phase lock loop.

Abstract:We report on the realization of a novel fiber-optic radio frequency (RF) transfer scheme with the bidirectional frequency division multiplexing (FDM) dissemination technique. Here, the proper bidirectional frequency map used in the forward and backward directions for suppressing the backscattering noise and ensuring the symmetry of the bidirectional transfer RF signals within one telecommunication channel. We experimentally demonstrated a 0.9 GHz signal transfer over a 120 km optical link with the relative frequency stabilities of $2.2 times 10^{-14}$ at 1 s and $4.6 times 10^{-17}$ at 20000 s. The implementation of phase noise compensation at the remote site has the capability to perform RF transfer over a branching fiber network with the proposed technique as needed by large-scale scientific experiments.

Abstract:We report on a new method for cascaded long-haul fiber-optic radio frequency (RF) transfer. The phase noise compensation device is placed at the relay site to simultaneously compensate for phase noise coming from the front and the second segment fibers. At the same time, the technique can have the capability to share the modulated optical signal for the both links, simplifying the configuration at the relay site. This scheme not only greatly simplifies the cascaded RF transfer system but also effectively improves the system noise floor. Experimentally, we demonstrated a 1 GHz signal transfer over a 210 km (100+110 km) fiber-optic link, achieving the fractional frequency stability less than 2.3 similar to 10(-14) at 1 s and 5.4 similar to 10(-17) at 10,000 s.

Abstract:We demonstrate a new fiber-based radio frequency dissemination scheme for branching networks. Without any phase controls on RF signals or usages of active feedback locking components, the highly stable reference frequency signal can be delivered to several remote sites simultaneously and independently. Relative frequency stability of 6E-15/s and 7E-17/1E4s is obtained for 10km dissemination. The proposed low cost and scalable method can be applied to some large-scale frequency synchronization networks.

Abstract:To synchronize standard frequency signals between long-distance laboratories, we carried out a frequency dissemination experiment over a 212 km cascaded urban fiber link. This cascaded link was composed of two 106 km fiber links, in which the fiber noise was compensated by two microwave frequency dissemination systems. The two adjacent frequency dissemination systems used different frequency transmitted signals, preventing the influence of signal crosstalk between the received signal of the previous stage and the transmitted signal of the second stage caused by microwave signal leakage. The frequency dissemination over the cascaded link showed a dissemination fractional frequency instability of 6.2 × 10−15 at 1 s and 6.4 × 10−18 at 40,000 s, which is better than the transfer stability over the same 212 km single-stage link.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a radio frequency dissemination system via fiber link. An electric phase-shifter is used to active compensate the phase error in the transfer process. Furthermore, an improved error signal extraction component is used to extract the phase error induced via the fiber link. The system can compensate large phase range fluctuation rapidly and precisely. An experiment has been demonstrated with this structure to disseminate a 100 MHz frequency through 100 km. The relative frequency stability is 3 × 10(-14) at 1 s and 3 × 10(-17) at 4000 s. It means this scheme can be used to transfer the most stable microwave sources through fiber link.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel scheme of stable radio frequency (RF) dissemination in a multi-access radio-over-fiber (ROF) link. Unlike the active compensation scheme based on a phase-locking loop, the proposed scheme provides fast responses and infinite dynamic ranges with a passive phase fluctuation cancellation (PPFC) approach. In our experiment, a 2.5-GHz signal is steadily distributed to a remote end through an arbitrary user site in a 25-km optical fiber link. The stability of the recovered signals at the user site and the remote end are evaluated. By using the phase correction scheme, the peak–peak phase excursion is reduced from 140 to 4 ps at the user site and 160 to 4 ps at the remote end, respectively. The achieved relative residual frequency instabilities are 1.4117×10−16∕104s and 1.6503×10−16∕104s at the user site and the remote end, respectively.

Abstract:Aiming at the adverse effects of fiber dispersion over long-distance frequency dissemination, a dispersion correction scheme based on chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) is proposed. The dispersion correction effect is studied and a frequency dissemination experiment is carried out on a 310 km urban fiber link from Tsinghua University to Zhangjiakou city with $2.2\times 10^{-{1}4}$ /s and $2.6\times 10^{-{17}}/10^{{5}}$ s stabilities achieved. Through implementing distributed dispersion correction and asymmetrical optical amplification at each optical amplification node in the fiber link, the dissemination distance is extended to 500 km by connecting 50 km-100 km-150 km-100 km-100 km fiber spools. The great challenge caused by the section of 150 km fiber spool has been overcome and frequency dissemination stabilities of $1.7\times 10^{-{14}}$ /s and $6.7\times 10^{-{18}}/10^{{5}}$ s are obtained, which reveals the potential and applicability of the dispersion correction-based frequency dissemination system.

Abstract:A lightwave centralized and dispersion immune RoF scheme is demonstrated by combining the use of a dual-drive MZM in CO and an AWG in RN. Bidirectional transmission of 25 MS/s 128 QAM signal at 38.4 GHz and 1.25 Gb/s OOK signal with a RSOA is successfully achieved. The proposed scheme also features simple structure and high transmission stability.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate stable radio frequency (RF) transfer via metropolitan optical fiber link in the Beijing area. The phase variation of the RF signal is compensated by a phase conjugation method incorporating two high-performance phase-locked loops. The wavelength conversion module extends the transmission length to 200 km with only two parallel 50 km dark optical fibers available. We optimize the configuration of dispersion compensation and optical amplification due to the high loss (0.31 dB/km) of the optical fiber link. At the same time, comparative experiments verify the short-term instability limitation that arises from the group velocity dispersion of the optical fiber link. The measured standard Allan deviation of the 2.4 GHz RF transmission system with dispersion compensation is 4.5 × 10-14/1 and 2.6 × 10-17/20 000 s, which is superior to that of the reference rubidium clock. The short-term instability of the system is deteriorated to 2.5 × 10-13/1 s without dispersion compensation.

Abstract:This paper reports a microwave frequency dissemination experiment over a 56 km-long-fiber link in the laboratory, exhibiting frequency instabilities of 1.8x10(-15)/s and 4 x 10(-18)/10(4)s. The phase perturbation accumulated along the fiber link is detected by comparing the round-trip signal with the reference signal. By controlling the phase of the transmitted signal in real time,the phase perturbation along the fiber link is compensated. Different modulation frequencies are used to avoid stray reflection effect. To improve the phase noise of the detection signal,we also implemented dispersion compensation.

Abstract:We build up a time and frequency synchronization system via the 80 km urban fiber link between Tsinghua University and the National Institute of Metrology in Changping city. Using the system, we demonstrate simultaneous time and RF signal distribution via optical fibers. The measured frequency dissemination stability of a 9.1 GHz RF signal is 7 x 10(-15)/s, 5 x 10(-19)/day, and the measured time synchronization accuracy is 50 ps. Relevant results were published on the Scientific Reports of Nature Publishing Group. To further build up a regional time and frequency network, integrated-designed modules are needed. Its long term continuous running stability and commonality should be tested. In this paper, we introduce the design of the frequency dissemination modules. After 135 days' continuously running, we get the million-second frequency dissemination stability of 8 x 10(-19)/10(6) s. We also introduce our multiple-access download module, which improves the frequency dissemination scheme from the traditional point to point protocol to be a tree structure protocol, and greatly improves its applicability. Using it, the stability of the receiving frequency signal at arbitrary accessing point is almost 4 orders of magnitude better than that using directly accessing method. All of these modules will be applied to build up the regional time and frequency network.

Abstract:We report on a stable radio frequency (RF) transfer experiment via 100 km metropolitan optical fiber link in Beijing area. The link connecting Daniufang and Fangzhuang is composed of two parallel 50-km dark optical fibers with a total loss of 31 dB. The dual phase locked loops (dual-PLL) configuration is designed in our stable fiber-optic RF transfer system. The measured fractional frequency stability (ADEV) of 2.4 GHz RF signal transmission system approaches 1.7 x 10(-14) @1 s and 2.5 x 10(-17) @10000 s.

Abstract:To meet the demand of flexible access for high-precision synchronization frequency, we demonstrate multi-node stable radio frequency (RF) dissemination over a long-distance optical fiber. Stable radio frequency signals can be extracted at any node along the optical fiber, not just at the endpoint. The differential mixing structure (DMS) is employed to avoid the frequency harmonic leakage and enhance the precision. The phase-locked loop (PLL) provides frequency reference for the DMS while improving the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of dissemination signal. We measure the frequency instability of multi-node stable frequency dissemination system (MFDS) at different locations along the 2,000 km optical fiber. The measured short-term instability with average time of 1 s are 1.90 × 10−14 @ 500 km, 2.81 × 10−14 @ 1,000 km, 3.46 × 10−14 @ 1,500 km, and 3.84 × 10−14 @ 2,000 km respectively. The long-term instability with average time of 10,000 s are basically the same at any position of the optical fiber, which is about (6.24 ± 0.05) × 10−17. The resulting instability is sufficient for the propagation of precision active hydrogen masers.

Abstract:Two fiber Bragg grating based techniques are proposed to reduce the fiber dispersion effect on the RF power penalty in ROF system. One is to realize the vestige sideband modulation by the narrow-band fiber Bragg grating, and the other is to use the chirped fiber grating to compensate the fiber dispersion. The transmission performance of the ROF system under both these techniques and the traditional double sideband modulation are experimentally measured and compared. The results show that the dispersion effect is effectively reduced by these two techniques and hence the transmission performances are greatly improved.
