Abstract:We extend the phase modulation method by in-plane diffractions from plane wave incidence to point source of surface plasmon polariton (SPP). A well-defined SPP focus is successfully realized from a point source under the diffraction by a carefully designed nanohole array, which is easy to layout in the future integrated optical circuits. With this method, the SPP Airy beam and finite plane wave are demonstrated as well, proving a general applicability of this modulation method. The proposed method and realized functions are expected of benefits for the future integration optics.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs) is a kind of electromagnetic oscillation coupled with the undulation of charge intensity,which is excited at the interface between metal and dielectric.With the properties of near-field enhancement,surface confinement and short wavelength,SPPs play an important role in nanophotonics.Recently the researches of surface plasmon optics and nano-photonic devices based on SPPs have drawn great attention of international scientists.The principles of SPPs and their optical properties in subwavelength structures are discussed.The applications of SPPs based on subwavelength metal structures in beaming,focusing,guiding and control of near-field beam are introduced, and the potential applications in nano-photonic devices are reviewed.
Spatial Control of Surface Plasmon Polariton Excitation at Planar Metal Surface.

Abstract:We illustrate that the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) excitation through the prism coupling method is fundamentally limited by destructive interference of spatial light components. We propose that the destructive interference can be canceled out by tailoring the relative phase for the different wave-vector components. As a numerical demonstration, we show that through the phase modulation the excited SPP field is concentrated to a hot energy spot, and the SPP field intensity is dramatically enhanced about three-fold in comparison with a conventional Gaussian beam illumination. The proposed phase-shaped beam approach provides a new degree of freedom to fundamentally control the SPP excitation and benefits the development of surface-enhanced applications.
Non-perfectly-matched In-Plane Diffractions for Generation of Plasmonic Airy Beam

Abstract:We report a new approach of in-plane diffractions of surface Plasmon polariton (SPP) that can tune the beam phase almost at will. It is developed by so-called “non-perfectly-matched” Bragg diffractions in a non-periodic nano-array with respect to a propagation SPP wave. With this approach, a 3/2-power phase modulation is obtained for a SPP beam, by which a well defined plasmonic Airy beam is experimentally achieved, exhibiting its unique properties, such as the non-dispersion, non-diffraction, self-bending, and self-healing. Due to the frequency tolerance of the non-periodic array structure, bicolor SPP Airy beams are demonstrated as well.

Abstract:We proposed a concept of meta-surface composed of sub-wavelength groove arrays in gold film on chromium(Cr) layer with designable parameters, which allows for flexible manipulations of the Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs). The SPP propagation and dispersion properties were systematically studied in the theoretical meta-surface scheme by numerical simulations. For details, a conventional SPP wave on metal surface was launched by a proper grating and then incident onto the meta-surface. Adopting periodic structural parameters, we find the surface waves can be split into two beams within the structure, which depends on the specific designs. This phenomenon is valid in visible wavelength of 633nm. Our meta-surface design would open a new avenue in manipulating the surface wave and hold the promise to develop new kinds of nanophotonic elements and interconnects.

Abstract:Optical Airy beam, as a novel non-diffracting and self-accelerating wave packet, has generated great enthusiasm since its first realization in 2007, owing to its unique physics and exciting applications. Here, we report a new form of this intriguing wave packet - plasmonic Airy beam, which is experimentally realized on a silver surface for the first time. By particular diffraction processes in a carefully designed nano-array structure, a novel planar Airy beam of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is directly generated and a structural dependent phase tuning method is proposed to modulate the beam properties. This SPP Airy beam is regarded as a two-dimensional (2D) subwavelength counterpart of the 3D optical Airy beam in free space, allowing for on-chip photonic manipulations. Moreover, it possibly suggests a breakthrough in recognition of this unique wave packet in a polariton regime after its previous evolution from free particle to pure optical wave.

Abstract:We proposed a symmetric V-type slit array to tune the propagation direction of surface plasmon polaritons by external control of the polarization and/or the inclination angle of the incident light. Using theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, we studied the position-related phase and spin-related phase of the SPPs excited by an inclined and circularly polarized light through a column of slits to determine the parameter of the structure. The results showed that we can tune the propagation of the SPPs with significant flexibility, by changing the polarization of the incident light and the inclination angle of the incident light. Furthermore, a nanostructures were designed to control directional launching of surface plasmons based on the principle of optical spin’s effect for the geometric phase of light. The propagation direction of the generated SPPs can be controlled by the spin of photons. The total size of the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) launcher is 320 nm by 180 nm, which is far smaller than the wavelength of the incident light. This result may provide a new way of spin-controlled directional launching of SPP.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating at metal nanostructures play an important role in breaking the diffraction limit. Chemically synthesized single-crystalline metal nanoplates with atomically flat surfaces provide favorable features compared with traditional polycrystalline metal films. The excitation and propagation of leaky SPPs on micrometer sized (10–20 μm) and thin (30 nm) gold nanoplates are investigated utilizing leakage radiation microscopy. By varying polarization and excitation positions of incident light on apexes of nanoplates, wave-vector (including propagation constant and propagation direction) distributions of leaky SPPs in Fourier planes can be controlled, indicating tunable SPP propagation. These results hold promise for potential development of chemically synthesized single-crystalline metal nanoplates as plasmonic platforms in future applications.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polariton(SPP)is a kind of electromagnetic mode confined at the interface of metal and dielectric, and it is expected to be a good carrier for photonic arrangement and integration in micro/nano scale owing to its strong field enhancement and confinement properties. Along with the deep understanding of SPP properties and the increasing requirement for developing micro/nano optical devices, how to precisely control the propagation of SPP waves and realize the specific distribution of near-field intensity has become the focus. We review the new principles and methods of manipulating the SPP beams by micro/nano structures, and the enhanced ability to control the beam property and the near-field distribution. The basic characteristics, the generation and the control of the special plasmon beams, including Airy beams, diffraction-free collimating beams and angular Bessel beams, are mainly addressed, which has been extended to near-field holography recently. The possible applications of novel micro/nano photonics devices based on SPP manipulation are discussed as well.

Abstract:A well-developed phase modulation method is utilized to design a nanogroove grating for a desired diffraction process, which gives rise to the conversion of a surface plasmon wave to an Airy-like radiation beam. Experiments and simulations revealed the unique characteristics of the generated Airy-like beam, such as nonspreading, self-bending, and self-healing. Our result confirms the validation of the diffraction strategy for beam engineering in conversions and possibly indicates wider applications in broader areas.

Abstract:We propose a method to manipulate the excitation direction of surface plasmons using subwavelength slits fabricated in a metallic film. By designing the specific effective index for each slit, the relative phase of plasmonics generated at the slit exit aperture can be tailored. Therefore, the electromagnetic field intensity along one direction on the metal surface can be enhanced or suppressed by surface plasmon interference. Numerical calculations performed by the finite-difference time-domain method illustrate our theoretical design.

Abstract:In this study, a point-scattering approach to the plane-wave optical transmission of subwavelength metal nanoslit arrays with varying angles of rotation and that of subwavelength metal supercell arrays consisting of nanoslits capable of various angles of rotation is developed. It is demonstrated that the suggested theories show good agreement with the simulations and experiments. The results show that constructive and destructive interference at each nanoslit can respectively enhance and suppress the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) far-field radiation of a metasurface. The proposed theory can predict the quantity and resonant wavelength of SPPs and provide a design scheme for an SPP device.

Abstract:Plasmonic metasurfaces can be used to control light wavefronts with subwavelength resolution by introducing spatial variations in the optical response of metallic antennas. Here, by taking advantage of Airy surface plasmon polaritons (Airy SPPs) with an ultralong effective propagation distance, we change their coupling grating structures into their plasmonic metasurface analogues, i.e., we introduce T-shaped nano-slits as geometric phase units to replace the conventional grating. Through the metasurface coupling grating, the propagation direction of Airy SPPs can be controlled by selecting the polarization of the excitation light. Furthermore, constructive interference effect occurs by controlling the meeting between two Airy SPPs in two structures, which continues to elongate their effective propagation distance. Effectively exploiting SPP energy and manipulating its propagation could pave the way for ultra-efficient flat optical devices.

Abstract:Surface plasmons (SPs) are expected to have a wide range of applications in many fields, so they have recently attracted much attention. However, most of the previous studies achieved the manipulation of SPs through designing the structure of the individual meta-atom. When developing the next generation of integrated photonic devices and components, it is essential to seek out new methods of software control, which enable more diverse modulation and higher efficiency. Here, the tunable emission of SPs with metasurfaces is systematically studied. SPs are a source of on-chip plasmonic vortices (PVs). To verify the controllability of the directional excitation of SPs, we designed beam deflectors with different angles of surface waves (SWs). Furthermore, PVs with different topological charges were generated by arranging spatially varied microslits. The proposed control strategy provides a common platform for various promising applications, such as on-chip generation of the propagation control of SPs and PVs.

Abstract:On the basis of a novel phase modulation method by in-plane diffraction processes, a well-designed nanoarray on metal surface is proposed to realize a broad band focusing (bandwidth similar to 100 nm) and a demultiplexing element (resolution similar to 12 nm) of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waves. Moreover, sublattice arrays are developed to achieve an improved demultiplexer and confocal SPP beams. The proposed scheme with implemented functionalities is designed totally in planar dimension, which is free of the SPP coupling process and indicates more practical application in photonic integrations.

Abstract:We proposed a scheme to tune the propagation direction of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) by external control of the polarization and/or the inclination angle of the incident light. The phase of the SPPs generated by the laser beam through slits can be divided into two parts: the position-related phase which is affected by the position of slits and spin-related phase which is affected by the orientation of slits and spin of photons. Using theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, we studied the position-related phase and spin-related phase of the SPPs excited by an inclined and circularly polarized light through a column of slits and then designed symmetric V-type slit array. We found when the incident light is in the symmetry plane of symmetric V-type slit array, spin of the incident light would give directions of surface plasmon propagation and the inclination angle of the incident light would give the inclination angle of surface plasmon propagation. The result shows that we may tune the propagation of the SPPs with significant flexibility, by changing the polarization of the incident light and the inclination angle of the incident light. Our designed launcher, as a spin plasmonic device under control, is expected to be of interest for future applications in photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:The efficient steering of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) fields is a vital issue in various plasmonic applications, such as plasmonic circuitry. We present a straightforward and efficient method for generating unidirectionally propagating SPP beams with arbitrary amplitude and phase profiles by manipulating Δ-shaped nanoantennas. As an example, a second-order Hermite-Gauss SPP beam is generated with this method. The near-field distribution of the generated SPP beam is experimentally characterized to validate the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:<p>Plasmonic metasurfaces show great potential to manipulate the wavefront of surface plasmons (SPs) and enable realization of various chip‐level photonic devices. However, the current configurations can merely operate under specific incident polarization state and/or have limitation in independently tuning the phase and amplitude of SPs, although arbitrary incident polarization state is allowed. There is still the lack of a metasurface scheme that not only can couple spatial light waves into SPs under arbitrary polarization states, but also can independently modulate the amplitude and phase of the generated SPs. Here, it is proposed and experimentally demonstrated that double‐lined metallic nanoslits can be well designed to overcome these limitations. Practical metadevices are designed and fabricated for generating polarization‐independent plasmonic Airy beams, near‐field focusing, and intensity‐preserved "lossless" beams, and their excellent performances at 633 nm are characterized with near‐field scanning optical microscope. The presented results will offer opportunities for the practical plasmonic devices and applications based on the plasmonic metasurfaces.</p>

Plasmonic polarization generator in well-routed beaming

Abstract:As one of the recent advances of optics and photonics, plasmonics has enabled unprecedented optical designs. Having a vectorial configuration of surface plasmon field, metallic nanostructures offer efficient solutions in polarization control with a very limited sample thickness. Many compact polarization devices have been realized using such metallic nanostructures. However, in most of these devices, the functions were usually simple and limited to a few polarization states. Here, we demonstrated a plasmonic polarization generator that can reconfigure an input polarization to all types of polarization states simultaneously. The plasmonic polarization generator is based on the interference of the in-plane (longitudinal) field of the surface plasmons that gives rise to versatile near-field polarization states on a metal surface, which have seldom been considered in previous studies. With a well-designed nanohole array, the in-plane field of SPPs with proper polarization states and phases can be selectively scattered out to the desired light beams. A manifestation of eight focusing beams with well-routed polarizations was experimentally demonstrated. Our design offers a new route to achieve the full control of optical polarizations and possibly advance the development in photonic information processing.

Abstract:Based on the combination of propagation phase with geometric phase, to the best of our knowledge, a new reflective metasurface which can control the direction of reflected waves and excite spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) simultaneously is proposed and numerically demonstrated for the circular polarization incident waves. The incident waves can be converted into SSP with longitudinal wave vector k x = 1.2 k 0 or anomalously reflected with reflection angle θ r = 13.9° under the illumination of the left or the right circular polarization beam, respectively. The respective converting efficiency of the left and right circular polarization can reach up to 70% and 82% at the frequency of 0.3 THz. Our study may open up new routes for polarization-related antennas, detectors and other practical terahertz devices.
