Abstract:Palladium-catalyzed dehydrogenative B-H/C-H cross coupling of monocarborane anions with alkenes is reported, allowing for the first time the isolation of selectively penta-alkenylated boron clusters. The reaction cascade is regioselective for the cage positions, leading directly to B2-6 functionalization. Under mild and convenient conditions, styrenes, benzylic alkenes and aliphatic alkenes are demonstrated to be viable coupling partners with exclusive vinyl-type B-C bond formation. Multiple subsequent transformations provide access to directing group-free products, chiral derivatives and penta-alkylated cages. The five-fold coupling, combined with the latter reactions, represents a powerful methodology for the straightforward synthesis of new classes of boron clusters.

Abstract:A series of cage penta-arylated carboranes have been synthesized by palladium-catalyzed intermolecular coupling of the C-carboxylic acid of the monocarba-closo-dodecaborate anion [CB11H12](-) with iodoarenes by direct cage B-H bond functionalization. These transformations set a record in terms of one-pot directing group-mediated activation of inert bonds in a single molecule. The methodology is characterized by high yields, good functional group tolerance, and complete cage regioselectivity. The directing group COOH can be easily removed during or after the intermolecular coupling reaction. The mechanistic pathways were probed using density functional theory calculations. A Pd(II)-Pd(IV)-Pd(II) catalytic cycle is proposed, in which initial coupling is followed by preferred B-H activation of the adjacent boron vertex, and continuation of this selectivity results in a continuous walking process of the palladium center. The methodology opens a new avenue toward building blocks with 5-fold symmetry.

Abstract:We have discovered the first reaction of a substituted pentacene molecule as a dienophile. A surprisingly clean Diels-Alder self-coupling of Cl4Pn leads to a novel ladder polymer, poly(iptycene), which can be converted to a conducting carbon at relatively low temperature (600-900 degrees C). Theoretical calculations of the former reaction suggest a biradical asymmetric mechanism, despite highly symmetric reactants.

Abstract:An efficient palladium-catalyzed dearomatizing [2+2+1] carbocyclization of 1,7-enynes with iodophenols has been developed. A type of tetracyclic scaffold was built in this reaction, exhibiting a broad substrate scope with moderate to excellent yields. More importantly, this method provides a potential strategy for the synthesis of tetracyclic skeleton natural products.

Abstract:Aryl-aryl bond formation constitutes one of the most important subjects in organic synthesis. The recent developments in direct arylation reactions forming aryl-aryl bond have emerged as very attractive alternatives to traditional cross-coupling reactions. Here, we describe a general palladium-catalyzed direct arylation and cyclization of o-iodobiaryls to build a library of tetraphenylenes. This transformation represents one of the very few examples of C-H activation process that involves simultaneous formation of two aryl-aryl bonds. Oxygen plays a vital role by ensuring high reactivity, with air as the promoter furnished the best results. We anticipate this ligand-free and aerobic catalytic system will simplify the synthesis of tetraphenylenes as many of the reported methods involve use of preformed organometallic reagents and will lead to the discovery of highly efficient new direct arylation process.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed annulative π-extension reaction of bay-iodinated triphenylenes with aryl iodides/o-chloroaromatic carboxylic acids was developed. This approach enabled the synthesis of diverse polycyclic aromatic compounds, including dibenzo[fg,op]tetracenes, azadibenzo[fg,op]tetracenes, and tribenzo[a,g,m]coronenes. Initial studies indicate that the resulting product, 2,3,8,9,14,15-hexakis(decyloxy)tribenzo[a,g,m]coronene, exhibits good liquid-crystalline properties.

Abstract:A straightforward method was developed for construction of aromatic compounds with a triphenylene core. The method involves Pd-catalyzed annulative dimerization of o-iodobiaryl compounds by double C-I and C-H bond cleavage steps. Simple reaction conditions are needed, requiring neither a ligand nor an oxidant, and the reaction tolerates a wide range of coupling partners without compromising efficiency or scalability. Significantly, the tetrachloro-substituted synthon, 1,6,11-trichloro-4-(4-chlorophenyl)triphenylene, can be generated and used to prepare a series of fully fused, small graphene nanoribbons by a late-stage arylation with arylboronic acids and a subsequent Scholl reaction. The synthetic strategy enables bottom-up access to extended π-systems in a controlled manner.

Abstract:The generation of p-cymene from the catalytic dehydrogenation of dipentene is one of the most vital approaches for the synthesis of p-cymene in the chemical industry. Herein, CTF polymer was synthesized by an ionothermal method via using terephthalonitrile as monomer and NaCl-KCl-ZnCl2 ternary mixture as catalyst and solvent, and Pd/CTF catalyst was prepared by loading CTF matrix with Pd nanoparticles via a chemical reduction method. The as-obtained Pd/CTF catalyst with the loading amount of 5 wt% Pd showed remarkable catalytic activity in the dehydrogenation of dipentene to p-cymene with a high conversion rate of 100% and a high selectivity of 96% at the reaction temperature of 220 °C in a stainless-steel autoclave containing 0.1 MPa of Ar gas, and also exhibited good stability in the recycling tests. The strong interaction between Pd nanoparticles and CTF and the enhanced electron transfer at the metal-semiconductor interface contribute to the outstanding catalytic performance of Pd/CTF for the dehydrogenation of dipentene to p-cymene. This work demonstrates that the metal-semiconductor catalysts possessed excellent potential in the production of high-value-added chemical products from terpenes conversion.

Abstract:Developing facile and direct synthesis routes for enantioselective construction of cyclic π-conjugated molecules is crucial. However, originate chirality from the distorted structure around heptagon-containing polyarenes is largely overlooked, the enantioselective construction of all-carbon heptagon-containing polyarenes remains a challenge. Herein, we present a highly enantioselective synthesis route for fabricating all carbon heptagon-containing polyarenes via palladium-catalyzed carbene-based cross–coupling of benzyl bromides and N -arylsulfonylhydrazones. A wide range of nonplanar, saddle-shaped tribenzocycloheptene derivatives are efficiently prepared in high yields with excellent enantioselectivities using this approach. In addition, stereochemical stability experiments show that these saddle-shaped tribenzocycloheptene derivatives have high inversion barriers.

Abstract:A novel palladium-catalyzed cascade reaction of o-iodostyrenes, internal alkynes and formates to access various indene-1-acetates was developed. The method enables the construction of three C-C and one C-O bonds through sequential double carbopalladation and aryloxycarbonylation under a palladium/air system. This protocol exhibited high regioselectivity and broad functional group tolerance. In addition, the synthetic utility of this protocol has been successfully demonstrated by the gram-scale synthesis and the late-stage modification of a series of complex bioactive molecules.

Abstract:A novel one-pot, five-component synthesis of 1-(alkylimino)-5,5-dicyano-3a-aryloctahydro-3-oxacyclobuta[cd]pentalene-1a,2,5a,5b(2H,3aH)-tetracarboxylates is described. A mixture of phenacyl bromide, malononitrile, isocyanide, and two equivalents of a dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylate undergoes a novel 1:1:1:2 addition reaction at ambient temperature in absolute ethanol to produce diastereoselectively the title compounds in good yields.

Abstract:Palladium-catalyzed tandem reactions of 2,7-alkadiynylic carbonates with allenes bearing a carbon nucleophile such as malonate and bis(phenylsulfonyl)methane for the efficient syntheses of fused tricycles, such as 3,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-indeno[5,6-c]furan, 1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydrocyclopenta[f]isoindole, and 1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydro-s-indacene derivatives, have been reported. The reaction forms two five-membered rings and one benzene ring fusing them in the middle.

Abstract:An addition/cyclization reaction of 1,6-diynes was developed for the synthesis of highly substituted 1,2-dialkylidenecycloalkanes. In this work, 1,6-diynes reacted with (dimethylphenylsilyl)pinacol-borane in the presence of a palladium catalyst to afford 1,2-dialkylidenecycloalkanes bearing silyl and boryl groups with a (Z,Z)-configuration in good to excellent yields. Moreover, the corresponding products could be easily converted into other synthetically useful compounds. This protocol provides an efficient and practical method of heteroelement-element linkage addition to the unsaturated 1,6-diynes.
