Abstract:A multi-responsive supramolecular polymer, beta-CD-(PNIPAAm)(4)-Azo-(PMAA)(7), is demonstrated here. This amphiphilic polymer can be achieved by altering the pH or temperature of a solution of the supramolecular polymer system. Absorption and emission spectroscopy, solution transmittance, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were applied. It was found that beta-CD-(PNIPAAm)(4)-Azo-(PMAA)(7) can self-assemble into inverse spherical polymeric nanoaggregates and can then disassemble reversibly under the irradiation of UV light due to the trans-to-cis isomerization of the azo groups. The resulting supramolecular polymer is demonstrated to have useful properties, including self-aggregation, supramolecular gelation and stimulus-responsive behavior.

Abstract:A photoresponsive ternary host-guest molecular recognition motif between cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]), the 1,1-dimethyl-4,4-bipyridinium dication (DMV2+) and an azobenzene derivative (trans-2) in water was applied in this paper to construct a cross-linked supramolecular polymer. Various characterization methods were adopted to prove the formation of the polymer, such as H-1 NMR, DOSY, specific viscosity measurements, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Additionally, the tetraphenylethylene moiety was incorporated into this system and the aggregation induced emission (AIE) properties of the supramolecular polymer were also investigated.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers constructed by orthogonal self-assembly based on host-guest and metal-ligand interactions are attracting increasing attention currently because of their interesting properties and potential applications. Host-guest interactions impart these polymers with good selectivity and convenient enviro-responsiveness, and metal-ligand interactions endow them with various coordination geometries, strong yet tunable coordination binding abilities, as well as magnetic, redox, photophysical, and electrochromic properties. Therefore, supramolecular polymers constructed by orthogonal host-guest and metal-ligand interactions have wide applications in the fields of soft matter, fluorescence sensing, heterocatalysis, electronics, gas storage, etc. In this critical review, we will address the recent development of supramolecular polymeric systems involving metal-ligand interactions and host-guest molecular recognition. Specifically, we classify the related supramolecular polymers depending on the types of macrocyclic hosts, and highlight their intriguing properties originating from the elegant combination of host-guest complexation and metal centers.

Abstract:The employment of cyclodextrin host-guest complexation to construct supramolecular assemblies with an emphasis on polymer networks is reviewed. The main driving force for this supramolecular assembly is host-guest complexation between cyclodextrin hosts and guest groups either of which may be discrete molecular species or substituents on a polymer backbone. The effects of such complexation on properties at the molecular and macroscopic levels are discussed. It is shown that cyclodextrin complexation may be used to design functional polymer materials with tailorable properties, especially for photo-, pH-, thermo- and redox-responsiveness and self-healing.

Abstract:Three distinct monomers were synthesized, namely CD2, E2, and F2. Monomer CD2 is composed of a crown ether group ( B21C7 ) and two terpyridine ( tpy ) groups, monomer E2 contains two 6,6′′-di(2,6-dimethoxylphenyl)-substituted terpyridine ( tmy ) groups, and the homoditopic F2 comprises two ammonium salts ( DAS ). By combining monomer CD2 with Zn(OTf) 2 , a supramolecular linear polymer (SLP1) was successfully obtained through metal coordination based on terpyridyl units. Upon introducing monomer E2 into the solution containing SLP1, a novel supramolecular linear polymer (SLP2) was formed in the solution via complementary metal coordination. Furthermore, by adding another monomer F2 to the solution of SLP2, we observed a further structural transformation of SLP2 into a supramolecular crosslinked polymer (SCP3). This transformation was facilitated by double noncovalent interactions involving both complementary metal coordination and host–guest recognition. Notably, all resulting supramolecular polymers, SLP1, SLP2, and SCP3, exhibited remarkable sensitivity towards OH − along with noticeable changes in their fluorescence emission properties. Moreover, at high concentrations, SCP3 demonstrated the ability to form a supramolecular gel while also exhibiting excellent self-healing properties.

Abstract:Novel linear supramolecular polymers were constructed by the orthogonal self-assembly of a heteroditopic monomer and a homoditopic monomer. The polymerization is driven by a combination of quadruple hydrogen bonding and benzo-21-crown-7 based host-guest complexation. The disassembly-assembly of these novel polymers could be reversibly switched by addition/removal of K(+).

Abstract:A novel orthogonal supramolecular polymer (Q[10]-TPDPB-Lu3+) in a host-guest ratio of 2:1 was successfully constructed utilizing the specificity and excellent cavity matching of Q[10] with the tripyridine derivatives (TPDPB). Significantly, non-covalent interactions between Q[10]'s hydrophobic cavities and Lu3+ were used to induce charge transfer of TPDPB to TPDPB and TPDPB to Lu3+, resulting in the construction of structurally interesting orthogonal assemblies with excellent fluorescence properties. Finally, the Q[10]-TPDPB-Lu3+ assemblies were shown to have good recognition and classification of strong and weak acid anions as well as iodide anions, and the classification was accompanied by a clear fluorescence emission change allowing visual observation.

Abstract:Three-dimensional supramolecular polymers (3DSPs) have received considerable interest in recent years due to the use of dynamically reversible non-covalent interactions, which can endow 3DSPs attractive functions. However, the resulting 3DSPs typically exhibit fragile mechanical robustness and poor periodicity in a 3D space because the dissociation energy of representative non-covalent bonds is lower than that of the covalent bond generally. Herein, we proposed a cation-π-based "sandwich"-like binding pattern between two monomers, for the preparation of an ordered and stable 3DSP having 4-fold interpenetrated nets (dia-3DSP). We also revealed that the binding driving force and stoichiometric ratio of monomer pairs has a strong impact on the dynamic process of 3D self-assembly. The as-prepared dia-3DSP can selectively adsorb molecules of similar sizes in accord to the molecular charge. Our results provide a proof-of-concept for a new strategy to control the molecular 3D self-assembly process and pave a new way to prepare ordered, stable, and functional supramolecular materials.

Abstract:Development of well-ordered supramolecular assemblies via the biomimetic orthogonal principle has aroused significant attention in recent years. To attain this objective, the elaborate choice of fundamental building blocks, together with the deep insight into mutual interplay among various non-covalent forces, are of vital importance. Herein, a novel molecular tweezer/guest recognition motif with enhanced binding affinity has been established, by virtue of the formation of intermolecular N-H-N hydrogen bonds. The non-covalent complexation persists even with the presence of ureidopyrimidinone hydrogen bonding motifs, which facilitate the fabrication of dynamic supramolecular polymers via orthogonal self-assembly. The study is valuable for designing synthetic supramolecular systems with a higher level of complexity.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers constructed by orthogonal self-assembly based on multiple hydrogen bonding and macrocyclic host-guest interactions have received increasing attention due to their elegant structures, outstanding properties, and potential applications. Hydrogen bonding endows these supramolecular polymers with good adaptability and reversibility, while macrocyclic host-guest interactions give them good selectivity and versatile stimuli-responsiveness. Therefore, functional supramolecular polymers fabricated by these two highly specific, noninterfering interactions in an orthogonal way have shown wide applications in the fields of molecular machines, electronics, soft materials, etc. In this review, we discuss the recent advances of functional supramolecular polymers fabricated by orthogonal self-assembly based on multiple hydrogen bonding and host-guest interactions. In particular, we focus on crown ether- and pillar[n]arene-based supramolecular polymers due to their compatibility with multiple hydrogen bonds in organic solution. The fabrication strategies, interesting properties, and potential applications of these advanced supramolecular materials are mainly concerned. Abstract:Supramolecular copolymers with complex architectures and emergent functions constitute a class of challenging but enticing synthetic targets in polymer science. Individual building blocks can be tailored to endow a resulting supramolecular copolymer with increased structural and functional complexity. Herein, we describe the construction of a linear supramolecular copolymer comprising mechanically interlocked segments with hydrogen-bonding metallorhomboidal units. Specifically, a hierarchical supramolecular polymerization of a crown ether-based [2]rotaxane and a discrete organoplatinum(II) metallacycle driven by 2-ureido-4-pyrimidinone (UPy) quadruple hydrogen bonding provides the impetus for its formation. This system demonstrates enhanced structural complexity accessed by the unification of orthogonal noncovalent interactions: metal coordination, host-guest chemistry, and multiple hydrogen bonding interfaces.
