Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is one of the most robust tools to prepare well-defined polymers with precise topologies and architectures. Although series of improved ATRP methods have been developed to decrease the metal catalyst loading to parts per million, metal residue is the key limiting factor for variety of applications, especially in microelectronic and biomedical area. The feasible solution to this challenge would be the establishment of metal-free ATRP. Since 2014, organocatalyzed ATRP (O-ATRP) or metal free ATRP has achieved significant progress by developing kinds of organic photoredox catalysts. This review highlights the advances in organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization as well as the potential future directions.

Abstract:Enzymatic transesterification was combined with RAFT polymerization to develop a new one-pot synthetic method for new polymer synthesis. This method contained in situ monomer transformation reaction between acyl donor monomer and primary alcohols such as hexanol and so on, followed by subsequent RAFT polymerization to get target polymers. The enzymatic reaction and RAFT polymerization tolerated each other and cooperated well to get new polymers with a completely transformed new monomer, high polymer yields, excellent control over the polymerization process, and good enzyme activity maintenance, providing a general and straightforward methodology for new polymer synthesis and modification.

Abstract:Multiblock polymers were prepared by combination of ATRP (CuBr/tris[(2-pyridyl)methyl]amine) and RAFT polymerization involving cyclic trithiocarbonate (CTTC). In the combined polymerization system, the ATRP was introduced as constant radical source, CTTC underwent ring-opening polymerization, and the incorporated trithiocarbonate moieties derived from CTTCs performed as RAFT agent. Through the integrated process, multiblock polymers containing predictable average block number together with controlled molecular weight of the blocks were prepared by one-pot polymerization. The average block number of polymer was controlled by concentration ratio of CTTC to alkyl halide in ARTP, and the molecular weight of block were well regulated by concentration of CTTC and monomer conversion.

Abstract:Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) is one breakthrough technique to obtain well-defined and controlled polymers or copolymers. However, this technique has been mainly considered in solution and alternatives such as solvent-free mechanochemistry in a ball-mill, an emerging approach for a greener and safer chemistry, is left aside as a tool for polymer synthesis. Nevertheless, mechanochemistry in a ball-mill offers many advantages and permits to avoid the use of solvent, with shorter reaction times and simplified treatment steps making it easier to recover the product of interest. Herein, interest was put onto the development of mechanochemical ARGET-ATRP conditions for styrene polymerization, one solid styrenic derivative sodium styrene sulfonate, one liquid styrenic derivative 4-vinylbenzyl chloride and a mixture of both monomers. A fine tuning of the catalyst quantity and easily removable ascorbic acid/Na2CO3 reducing agent, never describe in the ball-mill previously and more practical than other reducing agent, gave polymers and copolymers in good to excellent yield (up to >99 %), with a control over dispersity (typically Đ < 1.5), as analyzed by 1H NMR and size exclusion chromatography, respectively. As a further matter, these unprecedented conditions allow to render null and void all considerations concerning the physical state, properties (hydrophilic, hydrophobic) and miscibility/solubility of monomers which are key parameters in solution based ATRP for the synthesis of polymer and copolymer.

Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with dual photoredox/copper catalysis combines the advantages of photo-ATRP and photoredox-mediated ATRP, utilizing visible light and ensuring broad monomer scope and solvent compatibility while minimizing side reactions. Despite its popularity, challenges include high photocatalyst (PC) loadings (10 to 1000 ppm), requiring additional purification and increasing costs. In this study, we discover a PC that functions at the sub-ppm level for ATRP through mechanism-driven PC design. Through studying polymerization mechanisms, we find that the efficient polymerizations are driven by PCs whose ground state oxidation potential—responsible for PC regeneration—play a more important role than their excited state reducing power, responsible for initiation. This is verified by screening PCs with varying redox potentials and triplet excited state generation capabilities. Based on these findings, we identify a highly efficient PC, 4DCDP-IPN, featuring moderate excited state reducing power and a maximized ground state oxidation potential. Employing this PC at 50 ppb, we synthesize poly(methyl methacrylate) with high conversion, narrow molecular weight distribution, and high chain-end fidelity. This system exhibits oxygen tolerance and supports large-scale reactions under ambient conditions. Our findings, driven by the systematic PC design, offer meaningful insights for controlled radical polymerizations and metallaphotoredox-mediated syntheses beyond ATRP.

Abstract:The azide-alkyne click polymerization (AACP) has emerged as a powerful tool for the synthesis of functional polytriazoles. While, for the Cu(I)-catalyzed AACP, the removal of the catalytic Cu(I) species from the resulting polytriazoles is difficult, and the research on the recyclability and reusability of the catalyst remains intact. Herein, we reported the first example of using recyclable and reusable supported Cu(I) catalyst of CuI@A-21 for the AACP. CuI@A-21 could not only efficiently catalyze the AACP but also be reused for at least 4 cycles. Moreover, pronounced reduction of copper residues in the products was achieved. Apart from being a green and cost-effective polymer synthesis strategy, this method will also broaden the application of AACP in material and biological sciences and provide guidelines for other polymerizations with metal catalysts.

Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) generally requires a catalyst/initiator molar ratio of 0.1 to 1 and catalyst/monomer molar ratio of 0.001 to 0.01 (i.e., catalyst concentration: 1000-10,000 ppm versus monomer). Herein, we report a new copper-based complex CuBr/N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine (TPEN) as a versatile and highly active catalyst for acrylic, methacrylic, and styrenic monomers. The catalyst mediated ATRP at a catalyst/initiator molar ratio of 0.005 and produced polymers with well-controlled molecular weights and low polydispersities. ATRP occurred even at a catalyst/initiator molar ratio as low as 0.001 with copper concentration in the produced polymers as low as 6-8 ppm (catalyst/monomer molar ratio = 10(-5)). The catalyst structures were studied by X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. The activator CuIBr/TPEN existed in solution as binuclear and mononuclear complexes in equilibrium but as a binuclear complex in its single crystals. The deactivator CuIIBr2/TPEN complex was mononuclear. High stability and appropriate KATRP (ATRP equilibrium constant) were found crucial for the catalyst working under high dilution or in coordinating solvents/monomers. This provides guidance for further design of highly active ATRP catalysts.

Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is one of the most widely used methods for modifying surfaces with functional polymer films and has received considerable attention in recent years. Here, we report an electrochemically mediated surface-initiated ATRP to graft polymer brushes onto solid substrates catalyzed by ppm amounts of CuII/TPMA in water/MeOH solution. We systematically investigated the type and concentrations of copper/ligand and applied potentials correlated to the polymerization kinetics and polymer brush thickness. Gradient polymer brushes and various types of polymer brushes are prepared. Block copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt (PSPMA) (poly(HEMA-b-SPMA)) with ultralow ppm eATRP indicates the remarkable preservation of chain end functionality and a pronounced "living" characteristic feature of ppm-level eATRP in aqueous solution for surface polymerization.

Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is a versatile and robust tool to synthesize a wide spectrum of monomers with various designable structures. However, it usually needs large amounts of transition metal as the catalyst to mediate the equilibrium between the dormant and propagating species. Unfortunately, the catalyst residue may contaminate or color the resultant polymers, which limits its application, especially in biomedical and electronic materials. How to efficiently and economically remove or reduce the catalyst residue from its products is a challenging and encouraging task. Herein, recent advances in catalyst separation and recycling are highlighted with a focus on (1) highly active ppm level transition metal or metal free catalyzed ATRP; (2) post-purification method; (3) various soluble, insoluble, immobilized/soluble, and reversible supported catalyst systems; and (4) liquid-liquid biphasic catalyzed systems, especially thermo-regulated catalysis systems.

Abstract:A novel and facile method, involving enzymatic monomer synthesis and a photocontrolled polymerization technique, has been successfully employed for the preparation of high-order multiblock copolymers. New acrylate monomers were synthesized via enzymatic transacylation between an activated monomer, i.e., 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl acrylate (TFEA), and various functional alcohols. These synthesized monomers were successfully polymerized without further purification via photoinduced electron transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization under low energy blue LED light (4.8 W) in the presence of an iridium-based photoredox catalyst (fac-[Ir(ppy)3]). In this condition, PET-RAFT allows us to achieve high monomer conversion (∼100%) with excellent integrity of the end group (>80%). Different multiblock (co)polymers, including poly(hexyl acrylate) pentablock homopolymer, poly(methyl acylate-b-ethyl acrylate-b-n-propyl acrylate-b-n-butyl acrylate-b-n-pentyl acrylate) pentablock copolymer, and poly(3-oxobutyl acrylate-b-methyl acrylate-b-3-(trimethylsilyl)prop-2-yn-1-yl acrylate) triblock copolymer containing functional groups were rapidly prepared via sequential addition of monomers without purification steps.
Open-air green-light-driven ATRP enabled by dual photoredox/copper catalysis

Abstract:Photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization (photo-ATRP) has risen to the forefront of modern polymer chemistry as a powerful tool giving access to well-defined materials with complex architecture. However, most photo-ATRP systems can only generate radicals under biocidal UV light and are oxygen-sensitive, hindering their practical use in the synthesis of polymer biohybrids. Herein, inspired by the photoinduced electron transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization, we demonstrate a dual photoredox/copper catalysis that allows open-air ATRP under green light irradiation. Eosin Y was used as an organic photoredox catalyst (PC) in combination with a copper complex (X–Cu II /L). The role of PC was to trigger and drive the polymerization, while X–Cu II /L acted as a deactivator, providing a well-controlled polymerization. Excited PC was oxidatively quenched by X-Cu II /L, generating Cu I /L activator and PC •+ . The ATRP ligand used in excess then reduced the PC •+ , closing the photocatalytic cycle. The continuous reduction of Cu II /L back to CuI/L by excited PC provided high oxygen tolerance. As a result, a well-controlled and rapid ATRP could proceed even in an open vessel despite continuous oxygen diffusion. This method allowed the synthesis of polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions and controlled molecular weights using Cu catalyst and PC at ppm levels in both aqueous and organic media. A detailed comparison of photo-ATRP with PET-RAFT polymerization revealed the superiority of dual photoredox/copper catalysis under biologically relevant conditions. The kinetic studies and fluorescence measurements indicated that in the absence of the CuII/L complex, green light irradiation caused faster photobleaching of eosin Y, leading to inhibition of PET-RAFT polymerization. Importantly, PET-RAFT polymerizations showed significantly higher dispersity values (1.14 ≤ Đ ≤ 4.01) in contrast to photo-ATRP (1.15 ≤ Đ ≤ 1.22) under identical conditions.

Abstract:A robust mechanically controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (mechano-ATRP) was developed by enhancing the interaction between piezoelectric nanoparticles and ATRP Cu catalysts. The interactions favor a mechano-induced electron transfer from the surface of the nanoparticles to the deactivator CuII/L complex under ultrasonic agitation, promoting the formation of the activator CuI/L complex, thereby increasing the rate of the polymerization. This mechano-ATRP was carried out with a low loading of zinc oxide nanoparticles, providing a polymer with high end-group fidelity, predetermined molecular weight, and low dispersity. Propagation of the polymer chains was switched on/off in response to the ultrasound. The effects of the nature of the nanoparticle, nanoparticle loading, and targeted degrees of polymerization were investigated to evaluate the mechanism of mechano-ATRP.

Abstract:Copper-catalyzed controlled polymerization of acrylamide(AM) hasalways been a challenge, which typically exhibits low monomer conversionand broad molecular weight distribution (MWD) or requires complex/multistepreaction procedures, due to the highly active nature of the AM radicaland its side reactions. To overcome the above challenges, herein,we report the successful synthesis of well-defined polyacrylamide(PAM) via a facile one-pot and one-step aqueous Cu(0)-mediated reversible-deactivationradical polymerization (RDRP). The results of this strategy show thatstrong deactivation control is the key for the controllability ofAM RDRPs, which depends on the equilibria of polymerization and mutualconversion of different copper species. With the fast-propagatingmonomer AM, extra addition of Cu-II into the reaction systemis an effective way to enhance deactivation. Based on this kineticallycontrolled strategy, well-defined PAMs with narrow molecular weightdistributions (MWDs) and varied molecular weights (M (w)s) were successfully achieved.

Abstract:A facile one-pot 1,8-diazacyclo-[5,4,0]undec-7-ene (DBU) catalyzed transesterification/atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) strategy has been successfully developed through the combination of copper/DBU-catalyzed ATRP and DBU-catalyzed transesterification reactions. Well-defined poly(methacrylate)s with various side ester groups have been synthesized by ATRP and transesterification of acyl donor 2,2,2-trifluoethyl methacrylate with various alcohols, such as benzyl alcohol, n-butanol, iso-propyl alcohol, methanol, triethylene glycol monomethyl ether, propargyl alcohol, and 6-azido-1-hexanol by the one-pot process. Kinetic studies indicate that the ATRP process proceeded in a controllable manner without the interference of the transesterification reactions. Expansion of the binary system to a higher level ternary system has been successfully achieved by the combination of copper(I)-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition, transesterification, and ATRP reactions. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Metal-free atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was successfully achieved in aqueous media for the first time. Polymerization of poly(ethylene oxide) methyl ether acrylate (PEGA(480)) was well controlled ((sic) < 1.40) under visible light irradiation using tetrabromofluorescein (Eosin Y) as catalyst and pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as electron donor. A validated kinetic model was developed to investigate the process of photoredox catalytic cycle via reductive quenching pathway. Experimental and simulation results showed that electron donor not only had an important influence on the ATRP activation, but also participated in the ATRP deactivation. Furthermore, the effects of water content, catalyst concentration, and degree of polymerization on the polymerization were studied thoroughly by a series of experiments. Good controllability of the polymerization regulated by light on and off confirmed the high degree of temporal control. The livingness of the chains was proved by a successful chain extension experiment. Both experimental and simulation techniques were used to study aqueous metal-free ATRP, which provided a promising method to synthesize polymers in the absence of metal and organic solvent.

Abstract:A new copper catalyst containing chlorine and a photo-labile diethylthiocarbamoylthiyl group was successfully employed in the reverse ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA). The polymeric chains were end-capped wuth S2CNEt2, due to pseudo-halogen atom-transfer reaction between active and dormant species. Photopolymerization of this PMMA in the presence of fresh MMA and styrene monomers at ambient temperature yielded chain-extended PMMA and MMA/styrene block copolymers, respectively.

Abstract:Iron-based catalysts for atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) are attractive in the sustainability aspects of green polymer chemistry but usually exhibit lower efficiency and controllability over the polymerization, as well as poorer tolerance to polar groups, compared to copper catalysts. Herein, β-ketamine/iron complexes, combining a strategy employing in situ generated iodine as a regulator, have been developed for improving the efficiency and robustness of iron-catalyzed ATRP. The catalyst system realizes low catalyst loading, ultrahigh molecular weight, robustness over polar groups, efficient polymerization of acrylate, and forthrightly synthesizing block copolymers, which are challengeable for common iron catalysts.
