Abstract:Black titanium dioxide (B-TiO 2 ) formed by surface disorder engineering has attracted great attention due to the decrease in bandgap width, enhanced visible-light absorption, and various applications in photocatalysis, hydrogen production, photothermal conversion, etc. The hybrid of B-TiO 2 with the other materials provides vast potential to improve it performance further. In this work, the sol–gel method combined with argon heat treatment was used to synthesize highly efficient visible-light-driven B-TiO 2 /activated carbon (AC) composite catalysts. We investigated the morphology, structure, and performance of B-TiO 2 /AC. The synthesized sample is a single anatase phase. The introduction of AC into the catalyst had a positive effect on the reduction of the bandwidth of the forbidden band (2.38 eV) and the enhancement of the light absorption, as well as the effective inhibition of the electron–hole complexation and the reduction of the electron-transport resistance. The formation of the chemical bond (Ti–C–) in the B-TiO 2 /AC was well evidenced by the bonding of activated carbon to the black TiO 2 . The adsorption and degradation efficiencies of the catalysts were obviously enhanced by the AC composite. For Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation, 25 wt% B-TiO 2 /AC showed remarkable and stable performance. Particularly, under visible-light irradiation, 82% of RhB was degraded within 60 min, which is 16% higher than B-TiO 2 and 48% higher than white TiO 2 (W-TiO 2 ). Moreover, the RhB was degraded by 92% within 30 min under full-spectrum irradiation, which was 18% higher than B-TiO 2 and 61% higher than W-TiO 2 . According to reactive species capture experiments, superoxide anions play a major role in photodegradation, followed by photogenerated cavities. This was further confirmed by ESR tests. This work proposed a green and low-cost method for developing B-TiO 2 -based photocatalyst with improved performance.
