Abstract:A novel strategy for the selective construction of a C(sp3)-P(III) or -P(V) bond from >P(O)-H compounds and aldehydes is disclosed. By using the H(3)PO(3)/I(2) system, various secondary phosphine oxides could react with both aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes to afford valuable phosphines (isolated as sulfides) and phosphine oxides in good yields. This method features a wide substrate scope and simple reaction conditions and avoids the use of toxic halides and metals.

Abstract:A highly chemoselective reduction of phosphine oxides was demonstrated under the transition metal‐free and alkaline reaction conditions. During the reaction, P=O bond was firstly electrophilically activated by an anhydride and subsequently reduced by the versatile and cheap NaH which was strengthened by 15‐crown‐5. By the strategy, a variety of phosphine oxides including those bearing functional groups such as methyl, methoxyl, phenyl, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, trifluoromethyl, nitrile, ester, alkenyl, alkynyl and heterocycles were transformed readily into the corresponding phosphines in good to high yields. This work represents an efficient method for reducing phosphine oxides forming phosphines.

Abstract:A “one-pot” strategy for the straightforward Mn(III)-mediated phosphinoylation of aldehyde hydrazones with diphenylphosphine oxide to furnish α-iminophosphine oxides is described. This mild and practical method allows the direct use of aldehydes as substrates in one pot to generate the hydrazones, which are then engaged “in situ” by the phosphorus reagent in the presence of Mn(OAc)3 oxidant. Thus, the requisite isolation of the hydrazones is not needed in this operation. Conducted mechanistic experiments implicate a pathway involving phosphorus-centered radicals.

Abstract:Novel catalytic reductions of tertiary and secondary phosphine oxides to phosphines have been developed. Using tetramethyldisiloxane (TMDS) as a mild reducing agent in the presence of copper complexes, PO bonds are selectively reduced in the presence of other reducible functional groups (FGs) such as ketones, esters, and olefins. Based on this transformation, an efficient one pot reduction/phosphination domino sequence allows for the synthesis of a variety of functionalized aromatic and aliphatic phosphines in good yields.

Abstract:A novel method for selective reduction of aromatic carbonyl compounds by phosphorus acid under metal-free conditions is achieved to produce the corresponding reduced products in good to excellent yields. By using H3PO3/I2 system, various aromatic ketones and aldehydes could be reduced to the corresponding hydrocarbons. Diketone compounds could also be reduced to the corresponding Z-alkenes. The protocol is low-cost and easily scaled up, which provides a simple and practical approach to access corresponding hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Transition-metal-catalyzed branched and enantioselective allylic substitution of monosubstituted precursors with carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and fluoride nucleophiles has been well-established. However, such a selective carbon-phosphorus bond formation has not been realized probably due to the catalyst deactivation by the strong coordinating nature of phosphinylating reagents. Herein, we report a Rh-catalyzed highly regio- and enantioselective synthesis of allylic phosphine oxides in the presence of a chiral bisoxazoline-phosphine ligand. The application of α-hydroxylalkylphosphine oxides to keep the low concentration of the secondary phosphine oxides is essential for the high yields. The addition of diphenyl phosphoric acid was found to not only activate allylic alcohols but also accelerate the carbon-phosphorus bond formation.

Abstract:Herein, we describe an efficient method for the synthesis of alkenylphosphine oxides via a Tf 2 O promoted addition–elimination process. Various diarylphosphine oxides and alkylarylphosphine oxides react with ketones smoothly and produce alkenylphosphine oxides in moderate to excellent yields with abundant functional group compatibility. In addition, several transformations and applications of the product also demonstrate the potential value of the methodology.

Abstract:Precise modification of a chemical site in a molecule at the single-atom level is one of the most elegant yet difficult transformations in chemistry. A reagent specifically designed for chemoselective introduction of monoatomic carbon is a particularly formidable challenge. Here, we report a straightforward, azide-free synthesis of a crystalline and isolable diazophosphorus ylide, Ph 3 PCN 2 , a stable compound with a carbon atom bonded to two chemically labile groups, triphenylphosphine (PPh 3 ) and dinitrogen (N 2 ). Without any additives, the diazophosphorus ylide serves as a highly selective transfer reagent for fragments, including Ph 3 PC, to deliver phosphorus ylide–terminated heterocumulenes and CN 2 to produce multisubstituted pyrazoles. Ultimately, even exclusive carbon-atom transfer is possible. In reactions with aldehydes and acyclic and cyclic ketones (R 2 C=O), the carbon-atom substitution forms a vinylidene (R 2 C=C:) en route to alkynes or butatrienes.

Abstract:Abstract Organophosphines are an important class of ligands widely used in organic chemistry. Although great progress has recently been made in the rapid construction of new phosphines through Rh- or Ru-catalyzed C–H bond functionalizations, synthetic access to more diverse phosphines remains a challenge. We describe an efficient process for the rhodium-catalyzed phosphorus(III)-directed hydroarylation of internal alkynes to generate various alkenylated and 2′,6′-dialkenylated biarylphosphines with high selectivity. A range of diverse alkynes and phosphines were effectively prepared with broad functional-group compatibility under the optimized conditions. In addition, the developed protocol can be extended to modify chiral phosphine ligands, providing enantioenriched alkenylated phosphines without erosion of the enantiomeric excess.

Abstract:The diphosphination of alkenes through a radical pathway offers a promising approach for the rapid construction of aryl bisphosphines. However, such a synthetic strategy has not been successfully applied to the preparation of alkyl bisphosphines, partially due to the difficulties in the generation of phosphorus‐centered radicals from common alkyl phosphine compounds. We herein demonstrate that this challenge can be overcome by hiring Janus‐faced chlorophosphine as the phosphine source that can act as not only a radical precursor to generate phosphine‐centered radicals but also a radicalphile to capture alkyl radicals. With this novel strategy, a photocatalyzed reductive diphosphination reaction has been established, allowing for a straightforward synthesis of both aryl and alkyl 1,2‐bisphosphines from readily accessible alkenes and chlorophosphines.

Abstract:Building up new and efficient methods for the controlled conversion of carboxylic acids to aldehydes is important. Herein, we report a rapid, modular and scalable method for the conversion of carboxylic acids to aldehydes using pinacolborane at ambient temperature, in which a triflylpyridinium reagent is used. The conversion of carboxylic acid to intermediate acylpyridinium by triflylpyridinium is new. A binary pyridine-coordinated boronium complex is generated after reduction. The unprecedented reduction of the acylpyridinium by HBpin opens up a practically direct synthesis of aldehydes from carboxylic acids. Theoretical studies indicate that the reduction of acylpyridinium requires a lower activation free energy than that of the product aldehyde. The synthetic advantage of this protocol is further highlighted by the scalable synthesis of aldehyde via continuous flow process. Configuration retention for chiral acids are presented in those syntheses.

Abstract:Iodine-catalyzed Kabachnik-Fields reaction with trialkyl phosphites for the synthesis of alpha-amino phosphates was developed. This transformation completes rapidly at 40 degrees C, and is well tolerated with a range of amines and phosphites. Moreover, the products afforded by salicyl aldehydes with trialkyl phosphites could efficiently convert to benzoxazines containing phosphate under mild conditions, which provide a new precursor of new phenolic resin.

Abstract:Unprecedented chemoselective reductions of phosphine oxides to phosphines proceed smoothly in the presence of catalytic amounts of specific Bronsted acids. By utilizing inexpensive silanes, e.g., PMHS or (EtO)(2)MeSiH, other reducible functional groups such as ketones, aldehydes, olefins, nitriles, and esters are well-tolerated under optimized conditions.

Abstract:The reduction of phosphine oxideswithout the use ofhighly reactivereductants represents a safer and more sustainable solution for recyclingof organophosphorus compounds. Herein, we disclose an N,N,N & PRIME;,N & PRIME;-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA)-mediated reduction viaan unusual intermolecular hydride transfer. Mechanistic studies suggestthat TMEDA serves as a hydride donor, while the P(V) halophosphoniumsalt acts as the hydride acceptor. This methodology provides a scalableand efficient protocol to reduce phosphine oxides under mild conditions.

Abstract:The first facile and efficient Zn(OTf)(2)-catalyzed direct coupling of unprotected propargylic alcohols with arylphosphine oxides has been developed, affording a general, one-step approach to access structurally diverse gamma-ketophosphine oxides via sequential Meyer-Schuster rearrangement/phospha-Michael reaction along with new C(sp(3))-P and C=O bond formations, operational simplicity, and complete atom economy under ligand-free and base-free conditions.
