Abstract:Hierarchical porous ZnO microspheres decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were successfully synthesized by a facile solvothermal route. The hierarchical ZnO superstructure was constructed of interconnected nanoplates with numerous voids. Photoluminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements demonstrated that the main defects were oxygen vacancies (V(O)(•)) with minor interstitial oxygen (O(i)(-)) in the hierarchical ZnO hollow microspheres. The as-prepared hierarchical ZnO hollow microspheres and the AuNPs used to decorate them were examined for their photocatalytic degradation ability and as gas sensors. The photodegradation results demonstrated that the degradation rate constant on rhodamine B for undecorated ZnO microspheres was 0.43 min(-1), which increased to 1.76 min(-1) for AuNP-decorated ZnO microspheres. The AuNP-functionalized ZnO microspheres displayed superior sensing properties, with a 3-fold enhancement in their gas response to 1 ppb of dibutyl phthalate.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.
Directly Assembling Ligand-Free Zno Nanocrystals into Three-Dimensional Mesoporous Structures by Oriented Attachment

Abstract:Mesoporous materials have found a great number of important utilities due to their well-defined pore structure and high internal surface area, which are routinely synthesized with the assistance of block copolymers or templates. So far, a key challenge is how to assemble directly ligand-free inorganic nanocrystals into mesoporous structures, so that the high surface activity of ligand-free nanocrystals is not destroyed by further treatment to remove organic species or templates. In this paper, we report the direct assembly of highly uniform ZnO mesoporous ellipsoids from ligand-free ZnO nanocrystals of ∼5 nm. The size of the synthesized uniform ZnO mesoporous ellipsoids can be efficiently tuned from 132 × 75 to 190 × 111 nm (length × width), by varying the size and concentration of primary ZnO nanocrystal building blocks and the composition of the designed assembling solvent. The BET detection indicates that these ZnO mesoporous ellipsoids have high specific surface areas reaching to 136.57 m(2)/g, while their average BJH pore diameters are located at 8.8 nm. Especially, the high-resolution TEM images and XRD analysis revealed the occurrence of an oriented attachment mechanism in the assembly of uniform ZnO mesoporous ellipsoids, which supplied an important proof for the possibility of constructing stable three-dimensional structures by oriented attachment. The benefits of these ZnO mesoporous ellipsoids were demonstrated by their excellent photocatalytic activity under weak UV irradiation.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous structures have been fabricated using colloidal zeolite silicalite nanocrystals as building blocks. Continuous, uniform, optically transparent and self-standing silicalite membranes with well-defined shapes and controlled mesoporosity were obtained by self-assembly of zeolite nanocrystals followed by high-pressure compression and controlled secondary crystal growth via microwave treatment. The thickness of the compact self-standing membranes is tunable from 20 μm to several millimeters by simply using different surface weight densities. Controlled secondary growth via microwave treatment leads to a stronger self-standing membrane with controlled mesoporosity and has little effect on its thickness, crystallinity, micropore surface area and micropore volume.

Abstract:ZnO thin films were deposited using an electrodeposition method and porous morphologies could be achieved by annealing treatment. A variety of Ag nanoparticles were loaded on the surface of the ZnO thin films. Surface morphology, chemical composition, crystal phase and optical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis spectrophotometer and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Evidence of Ag nanoparticles on the Ag-4/ZnO thin film was be verified by the SEM and XPS measurements. The XRD results indicated that the Ag nanoparticles had little effect on crystallinity of the thin films. The photoresponse and photocatalytic results indicated that the photocurrent and photocatalytic performance could be enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification on the surface of the ZnO thin film. The best photoresponse and photocatalytic activity in Ag-4/ZnO thin film results from the moderate Ag nanoparticles on the surface of ZnO thin film, which could enhanced separation and suppressed recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.

Abstract:We successfully synthesized Au-ZnO hybrid nanoparticles with a novel hexagonal pyramid-like structure. The growth process of the as-prepared hybrid nanopyramids is clearly discussed. Because of their homogeneous composition and controlled morphology, the Au-ZnO hybrid nanopyramids demonstrate better photocatalytic efficiency than pure ZnO nanocrystals.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles show the great promise in photocatalysis due to their exceptional characteristics. However, achieving precise control over ZnO nanoparticle size, morphology, and agglomeration remains a challenge. We applied the high-speed shearing (HSS) method for synthesizing ZnO with enhanced properties. HSS employs a high-speed rotor to generate intense shear forces, enabling efficient particle size reduction, improved homogeneity, and enlarged surface area. HSS method could provide crushing effect and powerful mixing effect to synthesize smaller ZnO nanoparticles with less agglomeration. ZnO nanoparticles are optimized from 9.69 nm to 7.09 nm for single particle and from 955 nm to 26.5 nm for secondary particle size. Ultraviolet diffuse reflectance spectroscopy has been used to further analyze the in-situ formation reaction. Besides, we investigate the photocatalytic efficiency of ZnO towards methylene blue. ZnO nanoparticles made using HSS have more active sites, improving the photocatalytic degradation from 38.6% to 70.8%.

Abstract:The thermal oxidation of molten SnCl2 leads to the formation of SnO2 nanocrystals of less than 50 nm in diameter at 600 degrees C. These nanoparticles grow to large crystals with sizes of up to 10 um by increasing the heat-treatment temperature to 800 degrees C. The excessive growth of SnO2 crystals can be prevented by the introduction of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and inorganic salts, through which SnO2@carbon nanocomposites could be prepared in a fast and clean way. Increasing the heat-treatment temperature from 600 to 800 degrees C leads to the enhancement of the crystalline quality of SnO2 present in the nanocomposites, while the excessive crystal growth at high temperatures is prevented. A large number of highly-crystalline SnO2 nanocrystals with sizes of less than 5 nm embedded in carbon substrate could be detected in the nanocomposite material prepared at 800 degrees C. The prepared sample exhibits an interesting combination of dye adsorption, with the capacity of 63 Mg-dye/g(nano-composite), as well as photocatalytic performance under normal sunlight irradiation toward the removal of methylene blue. This article suggests a clean and fast strategy for the preparation of highly crystalline SnO2 amorphous carbon nanocomposites.
Solvent-directed and Anion-Modulated Self-Assemblies of Nanoparticles: a Case of ZnO

Abstract:Self-assembly of nanoparticles is one of the most appealing fields in nanoscience. In the present article, we demonstrate solvent-directed and anion-modulated self-assemblies of ZnO recrystallized from layered basic zinc acetate nanoflakes by heat treatment in liquid media. Diverse controllable ZnO patterns, including nanodots, nanodisks, twinned mesocrystals, mesoporous nanospheres, unprecedented triangular nanoprisms and porous nanosheets, have been achieved from the same precursor, indicating a fascinating platform for studies of self-assembly. It is confirmed that polar protic solvents such as water, alcohol and methanol not only provide liquid media to disperse the precursor nanoflakes but also force their decomposition under mild conditions without basic additives and direct self-assemblies of the resulting ZnO. Both the physicochemical property and the structure of the solvent play important roles. Due to the anion exchange reactions of zinc hydroxide salts and face-selective electrostatic interactions between the added anions and wurtzite ZnO, the conversion and self-assembly process can be effectively modulated by the addition of anions. When the affinity of added anions to the zinc hydroxide layers is weak, the conversion process will be slackened and the preferential assembly direction of ZnO will be modified. However, when the affinity is strong, other stable zinc hydroxide salts instead of ZnO will be obtained. Our findings give new insights into the solid-phase transformation and assembly from the precursor nanoflakes to ZnO. In addition, the outstanding light scattering feature of the resulting ZnO mesocrystals confers application significance on them.

Abstract:ZnO HNAs were prepared via a simple hydrothermal process. The samples were characterized via different techniques. The effect of temperature on the morphology, structure and properties of ZnO samples was investigated. The obtained ZnO HNA samples exhibited an impressive photocatalytic performance and good separation-recycling performance due to the porous structures assembled by nanosheets and large secondary particle size.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) has been regarded as a promising photocatalytic candidate for the purification of wastewaters containing organic contaminants. In this study, six ZnO nanocrystals with the shapes of granule, flake, rod, porous flake, nanosheet-assembled flower, and nanorod-assembled flower were designed and synthesized to investigate the relationship between their photocatalytic activities and morphological features. All these different morphological samples had high-degree of crystallization and belonged to the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO. The morphology had little effect on the light absorption threshold and band gap of these samples, but showed great effect on their adsorption performance, photocatalytic activity, and separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes. The main reactive radicals generated during the photocatalytic process were O 2 – , OH, and holes. The theoretical calculations revealed that the polar crystal plane could facilitate the separation of charge carriers. The adsorption and distortion energies for O 2 adsorbed onto different crystal planes were found to be much higher than those for H 2 O. These findings theoretically confirmed why O 2 – was the dominant group of reactive radicals.

Abstract:Employing NH4BF4 as a fluoride source, novel hierarchical cake-like ZnO microstructures have been fabricated by a simple, template-free, environmentally-friendly DMF (N, N-dimethylformamide)-mediated solvothermal route. The products were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and nitrogen adsorptiondesorption and PL. The SEM and TEM results indicated that the hierarchical cake-like ZnO were assembled from numerous tiny nanoplates. DMF acted as solvent and structure-directing agent to guide the formation of ZnO nuclei and the self-assembled preferential growth from smaller building units (nanoplates) to larger cake-like ZnO microstructures. The as-prepared samples, ZnO or ZnOHF could be regulated by altering the two major reaction parameters (the amount of DMF and fluoride source). Timedependent morphological evolution results revealed that self-assembly and Ostwald ripening were the main formation mechanism for the hierarchical ZnO microstructure. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared ZnO samples was evaluated by the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under UV light irradiation. Such hierarchical cake-like ZnO microstructures showed an excellent photocatalytic activity. Additionally, the cake-like ZnO microstructures were chemically stable, and the efficiency remained almost the same after being recycled five times.

Abstract:By means of solid-state reactions method, ZnSnO3 nanoparticles were prepared in the reactions of ZnCl2 and SnCl4 center dot 5H(2)O with KOH in the presence of added KCl crystal, and were assembled into 3-D aggregates with tetragonal-like shape in the size range of 20-200 nm. The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the microstructures of the samples were investigated by transmission electron microscope (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) in detail. Probable mechanisms for the formation of such tetragonal-like shape of ZnSnO3 3-D aggregates are proposed.

Abstract:ZnO 3D hierarchical structures assembled by different low-dimensional building blocks (nanosheet, nanoneedle) have been successfully synthesized at room temperature without the addition of organic agents. The morphology of the hierarchical structures can be well controlled by simply changing the concentration of the reactant. On the basis of the experimental results, a possible mechanism for the formation of the ZnO 3D hierarchical structures is proposed. The room temperature photoluminescence spectra of the ZnO 3D hierarchical structures show that the relative intensity of UV emission increases from nanosheets to the thin needle flowers and can be tuned by controlling the morphology. Importantly, the thin needle flowers sample exhibits an enhanced photocatalytic performance as compared with the other ZnO nanostructures due to structural features and good optical quality.

Abstract:SnO 2 /ZnO hierarchical heterostructures have been successfully synthesized by combining electrospinning technique and hydrothermal method. Various morphologies of the secondary ZnO nanostructures including nanorods (NRs) and nanosheets (NSs) can be tailored by adding surfactants. Photocatalytic performance of the heterostructures was investigated and obvious enhancement was demonstrated in degradation of the organic pollutant, compared to the primary SnO 2 -based nanofibers (NFs) and bare ZnO. Furthermore, it was found that the H 2 evolution from water splitting was achieved by photocatalysis of heterostructured nanocomposites after sulfurization treatment. This synthetic methodology described herein promises to be an effective approach for fabricating variety of nanostructures for enhanced catalytic applications. The heterostructured nanomaterials have considerable potential to address the environmental and energy issues via degradation of pollutant and generation of clean H 2 fuel.

Abstract:Extended and oriented nanostructures are desirable for many applications, but direct fabrication of complex nanostructures with controlled crystalline morphology, orientation and surface architectures remains a significant challenge. Here we report a low-temperature, environmentally benign, solution-based approach for the preparation of complex and oriented ZnO nanostructures, and the systematic modification of their crystal morphology. Using controlled seeded growth and citrate anions that selectively adsorb on ZnO basal planes as the structure-directing agent, we prepared large arrays of oriented ZnO nanorods with controlled aspect ratios, complex film morphologies made of oriented nanocolumns and nanoplates (remarkably similar to biomineral structures in red abalone shells) and complex bilayers showing in situ column-to-rod morphological transitions. The advantages of some of these ZnO structures for photocatalytic decompositions of volatile organic compounds were demonstrated. The novel ZnO nanostructures are expected to have great potential for sensing, catalysis, optical emission, piezoelectric transduction, and actuations.

Abstract:We report a simple confined self-assembly process to synthesize nanoporous one-dimensional photoactive nanostructures. Through surfactant-assisted cooperative interactions (e.g., π-π stacking, ligand coordination, and so forth) of the macrocyclic building block, zinc meso-tetra (4-pyridyl) porphyrin (ZnTPyP), self-assembled ZnTPyP nanowires and nanorods with controlled diameters and aspect ratios are prepared. Electron microscopy characterization in combination with X-ray diffraction and gas sorption experiments indicate that these materials exhibit stable single-crystalline and high surface area nanoporous frameworks with well-defined external morphology. Optical characterizations using UV-vis spectroscopy and fluorescence imaging and spectroscopy show enhanced collective optical properties over the individual chromophores (ZnTPyP), favorable for exciton formation and transport.

Abstract:Uniform hierarchical microspheres scaffolded from ultrathin ZnGa2O4 nanosheets with over 99% exposed facets were synthesized using an easy solvothermal route with ethylenediamine (en)/H2O binary solvents. Substitution of different chain length amines for en results in no formation of the nanosheet structures, indicating that the molecular structure of En is indispensable for the generation of two-dimensional structures. Inheriting both a high surface area of nanosheets and a high crystallinity of bulky materials allows the unique 3D hierarchical nanostructures to possess great CO2 photocatalytic performance. The normalized time-resolved traces of photo-induced absorption recorded from the nanosheet and meso-ZnGa2O4 indicate that the photo-excited carriers can survive longer on the nanosheet, which also contributes to the high photocatalytic activity of the ZnGa2O4 nanosheets.
