The products were characterized by FT- IR,UV- vis, 1H NMR,13C NMR and TOF- SIMS spectroscopic techniques. The bioactivities of the products were also tested.

Abstract:A new type of open-cage [60]fullerene was prepared starting from our previously reported open-cage [60]fullerenes containing hydroxy and tert-butylperoxo groups, and an iminofuranone moiety on the rim of the orifice. The key reactions are alcoholysis with MeOH/PCl5 and reductive aromatization with SnCl2 or HI (aq). The resulting open-cage compound contains two ketone carbonyls, two amide carbonyls, and one ester carbonyl group. The X-ray crystal structure of the precursor compound shows that the 18-membered orifice is almost completely blocked because of the presence of the amide group directly above the orifice.

Abstract:A novel Ag(I)-induced three-component annulation reaction of [60]fullerene with sulfonylhydrazones and nitriles has been developed for the efficient synthesis of diverse disubstituted [60]fullerene-fused dihydropyrroles. The reaction exhibits a broad substrate scope and excellent functional-group tolerance, and also allows for the synthesis of fullerene-bound macromolecules.

Abstract:AbstractA 19‐membered open‐cage fullerene derivative was prepared from C60 in 7 steps and 5.5 % yield through the peroxide‐mediate pathway. There are four carbonyl groups, an ether oxygen and a quinoxaline moiety on the rim of the orifice. A chloride anion could be inserted into its cavity by heating with hydrochloric acid at 60 °C for 4 h. Encapsulation of fluoride, bromide and iodide anions was also achieved at slightly more forcing conditions, 90 °C for 14 h. Single crystal X‐ray structures of the sodium salt of the chloride and the bromide encapsulated derivatives were obtained, which showed the halide anion in the center of the cavity and two sodium cations connecting two cages through coordination to the oxygen atoms on the rim of the orifices. The halide encapsulation ratio is quantitative in the isolated products.

Abstract:Oxidation of the fullerenediol C(60)(OH)(2)(O)(OAc)(OOtBu)(3) with PhI(OAc)(2) yields the open-cage fullerene derivative C(60)(O)(2)(O)(OAc)(OOtBu)(3)2 with an 11-membered orifice. Compound 2 reacts with aniline to form a new open-cage derivative with a 14-membered orifice, which yields an 18-membered open-cage fullerene derivative upon addition of another molecule of aniline. Two different types of aniline derivatives with either electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituents can be added sequentially, affording an unsymmetrical moiety in the open-cage structure. Reduction potentials of the 18-membered open-cage fullerene derivatives can be fine-tuned by changing the substituents on the aniline. The results provide new insights about the mechanism of open-cage reactions of fullerene-mixed peroxide.

Abstract:A novel and efficient Cu(I)/Ag(I)-mediated synergistic annulation reaction of [60]fullerene with diary-lethanones, benzoylacetonitriles, and beta-dicarbonyl compounds has been developed for the direct construction of diverse disubstituted dihydrofuran-fused [60]fullerene derivatives. This transformation exhibits a remarkably broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance and provides a useful method to a scarce class of fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:To explore potential applications for open-cage fullerenes, we employed 4-((6-bromohexyl)oxy)aniline to react with an open-cage fullerene precursor which has an 11-membered orifice and prepared open-cage fullerenes with an 18-membered orifice. The bromo atom at the end of the hexyl chain in these open-cage compounds could be easily replaced by alkoxyl groups to further extend the linear chain. The results also show that the presence of the alkyl chain slightly changes the reactivity of the orifice-expansion reaction.

Abstract:Cage-opened fullerenes with 18-membered-ring orifices have been prepared starting from fullerene-mixed peroxides. The key transformation involves a cascade sequence including a deketalization, a S(N)2' epoxide opening reaction, and a formal 3,3-sigma rearrangement. The 18-membered-ring orifice is big enough for water encapsulation under mild conditions. Single crystal X-ray structures were obtained for both the empty and water-encapsulated fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:Four isomers are currently known for the trioxygenated fullerene derivative C-60(O)(3), three regioisomers with all of the oxygen addends as epoxy groups and the unstable ozonide isomer with a 1,2,3-trioxlane ring. Here we report the synthesis of an open-cage isomer for C-60(O)(3) with a ketolactone moiety embedded into the fullerene skeleton through a three-step procedure mediated by fullerene peroxide chemistry. Two fullerene skeleton carbon-carbon bonds are cleaved in the process. The open-cage derivative C-60(O)(3) can be converted back to C-60 through deoxygenation with PPh3. Single crystal X-ray structure confirmed the open-cage structure.

Abstract:Fullerene skeleton modification has been investigated through selective cleavage of the fullerene carbon-carbon bonds under mild conditions. Several cage-opened fullerene derivatives including three [59]fullerenones with an 18-membered-ring orifice and one [59]fullerenone with a 19-membered-ring orifice have been prepared starting from the fullerene mixed peroxide 1, C60(OOtBu)6. The prepositioned tert-butyl peroxy groups in 1 serve as excellent oxygen sources for formation of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups. The cage-opening reactions were initiated by photoinduced homolysis of the tBu-O bond, followed by sequential ring expansion steps. A key step of the ring expansion reactions is the oxidation of adjacent fullerene hydroxyl and amino groups by diacetoxyliodobenzene (DIB). Aminolysis of a cage-opened fullerene derivative containing an anhydride moiety resulted in multiple bond cleavage in one step. A domino mechanism was proposed for this reaction. Decarboxylation led to elimination of one carbon atom from the C60 cage and formation of [59]fullerenones. The cage-opened [59]fullerenones were found to encapsulate water under mild conditions. All compounds were characterized by spectroscopic data. Single-crystal structures were also obtained for five skeleton-modified derivatives including two water-encapsulated fulleroids.

Abstract:Along with the advent of supramolecular chemistry, research on fullerene receptors based on noncovalent bonding interactions has attracted a lot of attention. Here, we present the design and synthesis of a cationic molecular cage: a cyclophane composed of two tetraphenylporphyrins, bridged face-to-face by four viologen units in a rhomboid prismatic manner. The large cavity inside the cage, as well as the favorable donor-acceptor interactions between the porphyrin panels and the fullerene guests, enables the cage to be an excellent fullerene receptor. The 1:1 host-guest complexes formed between the cage and both C60 and C70 were characterized in solution by HRMS and NMR, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies, and confirmed in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The results from solution studies reveal that the cage has a much stronger binding for C70 than for C60, resulting in a selective extraction of C70 from a C60-enriched fullerene mixture (C60/C70 = 10/1), demonstrating the potential of the cage as an attractive receptor for fullerene separation.

Abstract:[60]Fullerene mixed peroxide C(60) (OH)(Cl)(OOtBu) reacts with PhMe(2)SiH/B(C(6)F(5))(3) to give oxahomofullerene. Mechanistic investigation indicates that the hydroxyl group in the central pentagon ring is essential to convert the tert-butylperoxo group into a ketal moiety. Migration of the silyl group and transformation of the siloxy group into a phenyl group are observed in the deprotection of the fullerene bound siloxy group. A 12-membered open-cage fullerendione was obtained through oxidation of a [6,6]-fullerendiol. This orifice could be closed to form ketal/hemiketal moieties by BF(3)-catalyzed reaction with methanol. All of the new fullerene derivatives were characterized by spectroscopic data, and structure of the open-cage fullerendione was also confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Abstract:The fullerene-mixed peroxide C-60(O)(OOt-Bu)(6) was found to react with FeCl3 to form open-cage compounds C-60(O)(4)(OOt-Bu)(4) 2 and C-60(O)(2)(OH)(OOt-Bu)(5) 3. Addition of hydroxyl amine to 3 closes the opening, yielding compound 5 with a hemiacetal and hemiaminal moiety. Oxidation of 5 with diacetoxyliodobenzene eliminates the hydroxylamine addend and reforms the open-cage compound 3.

Abstract:2,6-Diisopropylaniline reacts with an open-cage fullerene derivative with a 11-membered orifice and forms an open-cage derivative containing one imino group on the rim of the expanded orifice. Further treatment with Lewis acids leads to open-cage fullerenes with an 18-membered orifice. Instead of the direct addition process observed before for less bulky anilines, an electron transfer process takes place in the initial step in the present reaction with bulky 2,6-diisopropylaniline. As a result, the chemo-selectivity is completely different affording the mono imino open-cage derivative selectively.

Abstract:Alkynyl anilines react with a diketo open-cage fullerene derivative and expand the orifice size from 11- to 18-membered rings. Benzyl azide reacts with the terminal alkynyl group under Click conditions. Single crystal X-ray structure of the C-s symmetric bis-3-alkynylaniline derivative showed the formation of a head to tail dimer due to strong H-bonding and - interactions.

Abstract:The cover feature shows the structures of two open-cage fullerenes. The structure on the left has a small opening. Reactions of this compound, including alcoholysis and reductive aromatization, led to the structure on the right. This product has a slightly larger orifice because of the opening of the iminofuranone moiety. The orifice expansion process is reminiscent of the gradual opening of a lotus flower. Abstract:Two novel derivatives of the C70 fullerene with 9- and 10-membered cage openings were obtained by means of oxydation and decarbonylation of C70(CF3)8. The major product, C70(O)(CF3)8O2, features a cleaved C–C bond transfromed into two carbonyl functions plus an ether bridge. The second product, C69O(CF3)8O, has one of the carbonyl replaced with another ether bridge. We provide a DFT analysis of the possible formation pathways to give the oxydized compounds under the action of pyridine N-oxide.

Abstract:Replacement of a pentagon in [60]fullerene with five oxygen atoms yields the open-cage compound C55O5 with five carbonyl groups on the rim of the orifice. Our attempts to synthesize such a target molecule starting from C60 have led us to prepare the fullerene-mixed peroxides such as C60(OO-t-Bu)6 with all the peroxo addends surrounding the same pentagon. Further investigations of the peroxide chemistry have generated various open-cage fullerene derivatives, including the carbon monoxide encapsulated endohedral compound CO@C59O6. This Personal Account mainly discusses peroxide-based processes resulting in selective cleavage of the fullerene skeleton bonds.
