Abstract:A symmetric pillararene-based receptor containing ten triazole units was synthesized. Interestingly, it formed 1:1 complexes instead of 1:2 with different halide anions. This was caused by the cooperative multivalent hydrogen-bond interactions between the triazole protons on one side of the receptor and the halide anion, which changed its structure from pillar to conical. However, by the regulation of the effector F-, it can work like an excavator grapple selectively grasps a PF6- anion. Abstract:Excess fluoride ions in groundwater accumulate through the roots of crops, affecting photosynthesis and inhibiting their growth. Long‐term bioaccumulation also threatens human health because it is poorly degradable and toxic. Currently, one of the biggest challenges is developing a unique material that can efficiently remove fluoride ions from the environment. The excellent properties of functionalized pillar[5]arene polymer‐filled nanochannel membranes were explored to address this challenge. Constructing a multistage porous nanochannel membrane, consisting of microscale etched nanochannels and nanoscale pillar[5]arene cross‐linked polymer voids. A fluoride removal rate of 0.0088 mmol•L‐1•min‐1 was achieved. Notably, this rate surpassed the rates observed with other control ions by a factor of 6 to 8.8. Abstract:We develop a self-immolative rotaxane sensor for fluoride sensing based on host–guest interactions between pillar[5]arene and fluoride-promoted cleavage of Si–O bond. Because of the selective and fast reaction between silane and fluoride, the rotaxane sensor shows anion selectivity and rapid response. The self-immolative nature of the rotaxane improve its sensitivity. Abstract:A new ditopic ion-pair receptor 1 was designed, synthesized, and characterized. Detailed binding studies served to confirm that this receptor binds fluoride and chloride ions (studied as their tetraalkylammonium salts) and forms stable 1:1 complexes in CDCl(3). Treatment of the halide-ion complexes of 1 with Group I and II metal ions (Li(+), Na(+), K(+), Cs(+), Mg(2+), and Ca(2+); studied as their perchlorate salts in CD(3)CN) revealed unique interactions that were found to depend on both the choice of the added cation and the precomplexed anion. In the case of the fluoride complex [1⋅F](-) (preformed as the tetrabutylammonium (TBA(+)) complex), little evidence of interaction with the K(+) ion was seen. In contrast, when this same complex (i.e., [1⋅F](-) as the TBA(+) salt) was treated with the Li(+) or Na(+) ions, complete decomplexation of the receptor-bound fluoride ion was observed. In sharp contrast to what was seen with Li(+), Na(+), and K(+), treating complex [1⋅F](-) with the Cs(+) ion gave rise to a stable, receptor-bound ion-pair complex [Cs⋅1⋅F] that contains the Cs(+) ion complexed within the cup-like cavity of the calix[4]pyrrole, which in turn was stabilized in its cone conformation. Different complexation behavior was observed in the case of the chloride complex [1⋅Cl](-). In this case, no appreciable interaction was observed with Na(+) or K(+). In addition, treating [1⋅Cl](-) with Li(+) produces a tightly hydrated dimeric ion-pair complex [1⋅LiCl(H(2)O)](2) in which two Li(+) ions are bound to the crown moiety of the two receptors. In analogy to what was seen in the case of [1⋅F](-), exposure of [1⋅Cl](-) to the Cs(+) ion gives rise to an ion-pair complex [Cs⋅1⋅Cl] in which the cation is bound within the cup of the calix[4]pyrrole. Different complexation modes were also observed when the binding of the fluoride ion was studied by using the tetramethylammonium and tetraethylammonium salts.

Abstract:An AB-type heteroditopic monomer was prepared by incorporating a dialkylammonium salt into a copillar[5]arene prepared from the co-oligomerization of 1-(10-bromodecyloxy)-4-methoxybenzene and 1,4-dimethoxybenzene. Based on the self-assembly of this new monomer in chloroform, a linear supramolecular polymer formed. The formation of the supramolecular polymer was characterized by various techniques including H-1 NMR, NOESY, DOSY, specific viscosity and SEM. This supramolecular polymer was anion responsive, since the self-assembly of the monomers could be destroyed by the addition of chloride anions. This study provides an efficient and convenient strategy to control the formation of supramolecular polymers.

Abstract:Fluoride anion (F–) recognition has attracted much attention in recent years due to its significant role in biological, medical, environmental, and industrial processes. Although many artificial receptors show high sensitivity toward F–, they still lack the specificity for such an anion. It still remains a great challenge to endow the receptors with high specificity and sensitivity toward F– at the same time. Herein, a contracted cis-cisoid poly(phenylacetylene) derivative (Poly-1) has been synthesized, whose preferred-handed helix can be stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonding networks among neighboring pendant amides. The average layer distance between its side chains of 3.88 Å can provide a small pocket, which is suitable to accommodate the smallest anion F– with high basicity, but excludes other anions. When the first F– binds to the pendant amides via intermolecular hydrogen bonding, the main chain conformational transition into a stretched cis-transoid nonpreferred-handed helix is triggered, which facilitates the subsequent F– binding. Such an unzipping effect gives rise to an ultralow detection limit of 2.85 × 10–8 M (0.54 ppb) for F–. Meanwhile, the solution color change from colorless to yellow can be observed because of the conjugated cis-transoid conformation of Poly-1. As a result, a highly specific and sensitive naked-eye recognition toward F– is realized. This work lays a solid foundation for the development of smart materials on the basis of stimuli-responsive cascade processes.

Abstract:In the last two decades, the research of the anion recognition has bloomed splendidly. The strong influence of the anion in the field of biological system, industry and every day life made the qualitative and quantitative research in anion recognition more and more important. After realizing the important role played by anions in biology and environment, various anions recognition hosts were synthesized. Herein, we report the synthesis of a quinoxaline based compound, namely 2, 3-bis (2-pyrrole amide) methylquinoxaline (2) through seven steps reaction. The crystal structure of compound 2 was studied. The fluoride recognition propriety of compound 2 was studied by monitoring the perturbation of the UV-Vis and the fluorescent spectra of the host upon the addition of anion. The result show that compound 2 can recognize fluoride in DMSO efficiently, and the main recognition sites are pyrrole NHs and amide NHs.

Their application in hostguest chemistry was investigated by using 1-adamantanylammonium tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate (3), which possesses a weakly coordinating counteranion, as a model guest. Abstract:A novel calix[4]arene based chemosensor L which contains coumarin and thiourea group has been synthesized and characterized. Interestingly, probe L exhibits both fluorescent and colorimetric response to fluoride anion with high selectivity and sensitivity. The addition of F- to a solution of probe L resulted in obvious naked-eye color change from colorless to orange under daylight and prominent fluorescence quenching. Further studies showed that the recognition process was less affected by other anions. The binding property of L with F- was studied by a combination of combination of various spectroscopic techniques, such as absorption spectra, fluorescence titration, Job's plot and 1H NMR titration. We are anticipating that this architecture with functional group attached to upper rim of calix[4]arene platform may provide a new approach for the development of F- chemosensor.

Abstract:A linear pillar[5]arene-modified conjugated polymer was synthesized, and novel side-chain polypseudorotaxanes were formed via the host-guest interactions between the pillar[5] arene unit and n-octylpyrazinium salt. Compared with the conjugated polymer which shows strong fluorescence, the polypseudorotaxanes show very weak fluorescence due to the efficient electron transfer from the conjugated backbone to the n-octylpyrazinium cation. Moreover, upon addition of chloride anion to the solution of the side-chain polypseudorotaxanes, a disassembly process occurred, leading to fluorescence recovery of the conjugated polymer. Therefore, the novel side-chain polypseudorotaxanes could serve as an efficient anion-responsive fluorescent sensor.
