Abstract:The Zn-Mg alloy thick films were deposited by vacuum evaporation on steel substrates. The impacts of the deposition conditions, including substrate temperature, annealing temperature, and cooling rate, etc., on the microstructures and properties were evaluated. The Zn-Mg coatings, before and after annealing, were characterized with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and conventional surface probes. The results show that the annealing conditions significantly affect the microstructures and mechanical properties of the Zn-Mg alloy coatings. For instance, annealed at a low temperature for a short period of time, no Zn-Mg alloy formed; higher temperature and longer time resulted in an increased Zn-Mg alloy phase. However, above a critical temperature, the interface reaction of Zn and Fe occurred, forming Zn-Fe alloy. We suggest the Zn-Mg inter-metallic compounds, MgZn 2 and Mg 2Zn 11, account for the improvement of corrosion resistance.
