Abstract:This study simulated the nanofiltration (NF) process of contamination removing by back-propagation neural network (BPNN), according to the test values of DK membrane pre-treating Imidacloprid pesticide wastewater. The real time nanofiltration (NF) separation model was presented for effective controlling of DK NF separation. The research showed the simulation precision met the application demands, with the correlation coefficient between the simulation and test rejection of COD and salt over 0.99, and absoluteness error below +/- 4%. In order to test the prediction of this BPNN simulation model, further NF experiments were carried out. Under the same multifactor condition, the predictions for the NF process performances were found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. This BP simulation model for NF process could be used to test the stability and effectively of NF system, and support the membrane technology well.
Preparation and Characterization of Low-Pressure Nanofiltration Membranes and the Application in the Separation Process of Dye Molecules

Abstract:Low-pressure nanofiltratioin (NF) membranes were prepared with hydroxyl groups ended hyperbranched polyester (HPE) using polysulfone (PSf) ultrafiltration membrane as the porous support. The prepared membranes are characterized using Fourier transforms infrared spectrometry, scanning electro microscopy, atom force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and water contact angle. The results indicated that the crosslinked HPE formed a uniform, ultra-thin and active layer on PSf support. Water permeability and salt rejection of the membranes were measured at the trans-membrane pressures as low as 0.3 MPa. NF membranes exhibited high enhancement in water permeability while maintaining high rejection of salts. The rejections of the nanofiltration membrane to Rhodamine B and Xylenol orange were 100 and 98.4%, respectively. The study indicated that these NF membranes could be applied to separate small organic molecules.

Abstract:A low operating pressure nanofiltration membrane is prepared by interfacial polymerization between m-phenylenediamine(MPDA) and trimesoyl chloride(TMC) using PVC hollow fiber membrane as supporting.A series of PVC nanofiltration membranes with different molecular weight cutoff(MWCO) can be obtained by controlling preparation conditions.Chemical and morphological characterization of the membrane surface was carried out by FTIR-ATR and SEM.MWCO was characterized by filtration experiments.The preparation conditions were investigated in detail.At the optimized conditions(40 min air-dried time,aqueous phase containing 0.5% MPDA,0.05% SDS and 0.6% acid absorbent,oil phase containing 0.3% TMC,and 1 min reaction time),under 0.3 MPa,water flux of the gained nanofiltration membrane reaches 17.8 L/m2·h,and the rejection rates of methyl orange and MgSO4 are more than 90% and 60%,respectively.

Abstract:Much attention has been paid to pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Nanofiltration (NF) is a new type of separation technology developed between ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis (RO) in the mid-1980s, which is a continuation and development branch of the ultra-low pressure RO technology. PPCPs are a kind of water ubiquitous trace organics, and there are some disadvantages of the PPCPs, such as recalcitrance, accumulation of biological toxicity and long-term dangers, which gradually attracts the attention of the scientific community due to the harm to the environment and ecosystems. This paper analyses the latest research progress in this country and overseas, introducing the advantages on removal of the PPCPs by NF membranes, also recommending the mechanism of the removal process and influencing factors. The direction of future research is proposed as well.

Abstract:Thin film composite nanofiltration membranes were successfully prepared via interfacial polymerization between piperazine and trimesoyl chloride on poly(vinyl chloride) hollow fiber substrates with different properties. Both the polyamide layer and underlying substrate were characterized with respect to chemical and morphological structures. The effects of substrate properties on the characteristics of the prepared nanofiltration membranes were investigated. It is found from the results that the differences in substrate properties, mainly the membrane pore size and porosity had significant contributions to the changes in the thickness and cross-linking degree of poly(piperazine-amide) layer during the interfacial polymerization process, leading to the varied performance of the prepared nanofiltration membranes in terms of MgSO4 rejection and permeate flux. The nanofiltration membrane prepared from the substrate with medium pore size and porosity exhibited a relatively higher permeate flux as well as a superior rejection for MgSO4, which showed typical rejection orders for different salts as well as good stabilities after backwash treatment and a long-term filtration process. These results indicate that the prepared poly(vinyl chloride) nanofiltration hollow fiber membranes could be applied to the desalination or water softening process.

Abstract:Nanofiltration (NF) membranes show great potential for advanced water treatment, especially for trace organic pollutant removal. The removal efficiency of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and environmental estrogenic hormones (EEHs) by positively charged hollow fiber NF membranes (PEI-NF) were evaluated. The separation properties were evaluated by changing the operating pressure, temperature, ionic strength, and cation species. A relationship between the physicochemical characteristics of the pharmaceuticals and the NF membrane retention behavior was established. The results showed that the rejection rates of the PEI-NF membrane for the selected PPCPs and EEHs ranged from 81 to ~ 91.26%. For positively (negatively) charged pharmaceutical molecules, the electrostatic repulsion (attraction) effect and steric hindrance were the dominant rejection mechanisms of the PEI-NF membrane. For neutral pharmaceutical molecules, in addition to the size sieving effect, the hydration-induced size increase of hydrophilic substances improved the rejection rates. Both the molecular structure and diffusion coefficient of pharmaceutical molecules influenced their rejection by the PEI-NF membrane to a certain extent. Moreover, the PEI-NF membrane showed a high removal effect for PPCPs and EEHs in water samples from actual tap water plants.

Abstract:Nanofiltration (NF) has great potential in removing trace organic micropollutants in wastewater, especially pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). However, little information is available on PPCPs rejections under complex feed water matrices, which better represent real wastewater treatment conditions. In this paper, the PPCPs rejection behaviors and the dominating mechanisms by NF membranes were studied under multi mixed influent matrices which contained various inorganic ions, humic acids and sodium alginate. The results showed that the DF30 membrane had the highest rejection of negatively charged indomethacin (95.4%) and diclofenac sodium (94.1%) in pure water. Our study also showed that electrostatic effect and steric hindrance were the primary rejection mechanisms of PPCPs by DF30 membrane in pure water. The predominant fouling of DF30 membrane could be explained by the complete blocking model in the filtration of mixed influent matrices containing both inorganic ions and organic matters. The components in membrane bioreactor (MBR) effluent was beneficial to retention of positively and neutrally charged PPCPs, but had no significant effects on retention of negatively charged PPCPs. Risk quotients of the six target PPCPs in NF effluent were all lower than 0.1, likely indicating low risk to aquatic organisms. This work has potential implications for a deeper understanding of PPCPs rejections by NF in wastewater treatment.

Elucidating the Rejection Mechanisms of PPCPs by Nanofiltration and Reverse Osmosis Membranes

Abstract:In this study, the rejection mechanisms of six commonly detected pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) were systematically studied with three commercial thin film composite polyamide reverse osmosis (RO, XLE) and nanofiltration (NF, NF90, and NF270) membranes at pH 3–10. The amount of PPCP adsorption on membrane surfaces was also extracted and calculated so as to determine the contribution of adsorption mechanism on PPCP rejection using adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms. At low pHs, PPCP rejection was the highest for XLE followed by NF90 and NF270. As pH increased to 10, PPCP rejection increased significantly for NF90 and NF270, attributed to the enhanced electrostatic repulsion between the negatively charged membrane surface and ionized PPCPs, while being slightly increased for XLE due to the dominant mechanism of steric hindrance. The simplified charge concentration polarization model predicted well for most cases, which demonstrated the contribution of steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsion mechanisms in PPCP rejection by NF and RO membranes. However, two groups of bias were observed during model prediction. One is the underestimated group of small ionized PPCPs at high pH values (8 and 10) by NF270 because of the electrostatic repulsion between the small ionized PPCPs and NF270 overwhelmed the increase in permeate flux by membrane swelling. The other group is the overestimated rejection of triclosan (TRI), a highly hydrophobic compound adsorbing onto membrane surfaces leading to its diffusion and penetration through membranes, which can be confirmed by the extraction of TRI mainly from the top polyamide plus polysulfone membrane layers and also the bottom polyester layer after filtration experiments even at high pH values. The competitive adsorption of TRI and ibuprofen was observed in static adsorption kinetic experiments, and the adsorption can be explained well by the first-order reaction model. The adsorption isotherm data fitted best with the Freundlich model in all cases with the n value indicating chemical adsorption, which would be a hydrophobic interaction between PPCPs and the membrane surface in this study.

Abstract:The emerging contaminants, in particular pharmaceuticals and personal care products and environmental estrogens, have been received global concerns in recent years. Nanofiltration (NF) as an advanced tertiary treatment technology can be a reliable and potential tool for micropollutants removal. However, the influence of operation conditions of NF system to micropollutants rejections in an engineering application, is still lacking. Here, a pilotscale NF system was set up to investigate its removal efficiencies to 49 micropollutants under different operation conditions by treating actual municipal wastewater. The results showed that the rejections of positively and neutrally charged micropollutants with molecular weight higher than 250 g mol(-1) were both higher than 80%. Besides, most negatively charged micropollutants were also rejected higher than 80% under different operation conditions. The rejections of most micropollutants increased with temperature decreased from 25 degrees C to 13 degrees C, which was primarily ascribed to decrease of pore size of NF membrane at low temperature. Compared with the water recovery rate of 80%, lower rejections of micropollutants were observed with lower water recovery rate of 60%. Except for sulfamethoxazole, the risk quotients of other detected 20 micropollutants in NF effluent were all lower than 1.0, showing medium or no risks to aquatic organisms. This study might aid understanding the performance of micropollutants rejections by NF in actual engineering application and could give guideline to the implementation of NF technology in future advanced treatment processes. Nanofiltration Understanding: A Separation Process of Molecular-Level with Nano-Scale Effect

Abstract:Nanofiltration(NF) membrane has been developed from the late 1980s and widely applied in the separation of liquid mixtures. Several models for NF process have been proposed, such as the pore model based on the sieving effect, the charge models based on the electrostatic effect, and the electrostatic steric-hindrance model and the Donnan steric pore model based on the both effects, which play an important role in understanding the separation mechanism and promoting the application of NF. However, the performances of these NF membranes with features of "loose RO membranes" cannot be predicted by commercial RO simulation software, which is a severe restriction on straightforward implementation of large-scale NF applications. In regard to these problems, a model was proposed for the separation performance of mixed salts solution across NF membranes to promote the application of NF during the water treatment in the light of the competitive effect among co-ions and regulation effect among counter-ions. Both two effects can be determined by some specific experiments. Recently, based on the indepth experimental studies on rejection performance and the attendant electrokinetic properties, some researchers have found that the performance of NF membranes cannot be predicted completely by merely considering the sieving and electrostatic effect, but some drawbacks still exist in the analysis of electrokinetic properties. The further studies have contributed to a deeper understanding on the particular effect caused by the nano-scale pore size and charge features caused by the complicated interaction in solution. Moreover, the dielectric effect in the transport process of ions through NF membranes has been addressed and quantitatively analyzed.

Abstract:There is a voluminous literature on the determination of structural and electrical properties of a nanofiltration (NF) membrane and its separation performance. Theories used to characterize a NF membrane usually include: the non-equilibrium thermodynamic model, the pore model, the TMS model, the electrostatic and steric-hindrance pore model, and the semi-emprical model. In the article, we briefly trace the origins or the general ideas of the above-mentioned theories. From there, recent researches on the evaluation of membrane structural and electrical properties are reviewed. We then turn to research on the separation performance of a NF membrane for single component solutions of inorganic electrolytes, neutral organic solutions, and mixture solution of inorganic electrolytes or that of electrolyte and neutral organic solute. Finally, we conclude with suggestions as to the role of models in the contributions to the application of the NF technology in product separation processes.
Nanofiltration in Pilot Scale for Wastewater Reclamation: Long-term Performance and Membrane Biofouling Characteristics

Abstract:Nanofiltration (NF) has been recognized as a cost-effective membrane technology for wastewater reclamation, while little information is available about its performance in pilot scale for practical engineering application. In addition, the biofouling issue is always a barrier to membrane process for its long-term stable operation which requires further investigations. In this study, the performance of a pilot-scale two-stage NF system was continually monitored for three months. The membrane autopsy characterization was conducted when the irreversible membrane fouling occurred. The rejections of COD, TOC and TP by NF were 96.5 +/- 1.2%, 91.9 +/- 1.9% and 97.7 +/- 2.1%, respectively. A total of 23 emerging contaminants have been detected in NF influent, including 19 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and four environmental estrogens (EEs). Except for bisphenol A (57.6%) and ibuprofen (69.9%), the rejections of other 21 emerging contaminants were all higher than 80% by the NF system. Microbial community structure analysis showed that Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the two predominant bacteria on the membrane surface with percentages of 34.1%-41.0% and 23.4%-30.6% at phylum level, respectively. At genus level, Stenotrophomonas and Pseudoxanthomonas were primarily dominant in the first stage, while Cloacibacterium and Methyloversatilis showed higher relative abundances in the second stage. Sphingopyxis was an extremely stubborn genus on the membrane surface. Besides, the biodiversity of microbial communities in the first stage was higher than that in the second stage, possibly showing more severe biofouling in the first stage of the two-stage NF system. This study has provided insights to understand the practical performance of NF technology in pilot scale and could give guideline for biofouling control in NF engineering application.

Abstract:In view of the high risks brought about by organic micropollutants (OMPs), nanofiltration (NF) processes have been playing a vital role in advanced water and wastewater treatment, owing to the high membrane performance in rejection of OMPs, permeation of water, and passage of mineral salts. Though numerous studies have been devoted to evaluating and technically enhancing membrane performance in removing various OMPs, the trade-off effect between water permeance and water/OMP selectivity for state-of-the-art membranes remains far from being understood. Knowledge of this effect is significant for comparing and guiding membrane development works toward cost-efficient OMP removal. In this work, we comprehensively assessed the performance of 88 NF membranes, commercialized or newly developed, based on their water permeance and OMP rejection data published in the literature. The effectiveness and underlying mechanisms of various modification methods in tailoring properties and in turn performance of the mainstream polyamide (PA) thin-film composite (TFC) membranes were quantitatively analyzed. The trade-off effect was demonstrated by the abundant data from both experimental measurements and machine learning-based prediction. On this basis, the advancement of novel membranes was benchmarked by the performance upper-bound revealed by commercial membranes and lab-made PA membranes. We also assessed the potentials of current NF membranes in selectively separating OMPs from inorganic salts and identified the future research perspectives to achieve further enhancement in OMP removal and salt/OMP selectivity of NF membranes.
Experimental Investigation on Nanofiltration Treatment of Waste Water Containing Low Concentration Ammonium Perfluorooctanoate

Abstract:The traditional ways of treating waste water containing low concentration ammonium perfluorooctanoate (APFO) have the shortcomings of high energy consumption, complicated technique, and secondary contamination. In order to overcome those shortcomings, the nanofiltration of the waste water containing low APFO concentration by aromatic polyamide membrane was investigated. The effects of operation pressure, pH value, inorganic salt, and APFO concentration on rejection and permeation flux were studied. The results demonstrate that, when Δp=0.5 MPa and pH > 7, the nanofiltration process is more effective; the observed rejection reaches to 88.7%, and that the decrease of APFO concentration and increase of inorganic salt concentration reduce the rejection of APFO. The waste water with APFO concentration of 450 mg·L-1 from the factory of polytetrfluoroethylene production was treated by nanofiltration with the mentioned membrane experimentally. The results indicate that, after 2 stages of nanofiltration, the treated waste water meets the national standard for waste water discharge (the concentration of APFO lower than 10 mg·L-1). According to the experimental results, an industry scale nanofiltration technique for treating the waste water containing low APFO concentration was proposed, which can be used as a reference for the industry waste water treatment.

Abstract:To enhance the use of nanofiltration in the production of quality drinking water, particularly through the efficient removal of micropollutants yet still preserving essential minerals, the targeted nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) are required to have small pore dimensions coupled with a high, net-negative charge density. Herein, after the formation of a separation layer using piperazine interfacially polymerized with trimesoyl chloride, the exploitation of residual amine groups was systematically investigated by different diacyl chlorides in an organic milieu, which caused the upper part of the final separation layer to be denser and highly negatively charged. Hence, this protocol offers a novel means to fabricate NFMs simultaneously endowed with a low molecular cutoff (MWCO) of 145-238 Da and a reduced rejection of MgCl2 (48%-80%) as well as a competitive water permeance. Those features are ideally applicable to the goal of removing small micropollutants while preserving mineral ions, as needed for the energy-efficient production of safe, quality drinking water. Abstract:Pharmaceutical drugs have recently emerged as one the foremost water pollutants in the environment, triggering a severe threat to living species. With their complex chemical nature and the intricacy involved in the removal process in mind, the present work investigates the performance of commercially available polyamide thin-film composite tubular nanofiltration (NF) membranes (AFC 40 and AFC 80) in removing polluting pharmaceutical drugs, namely caffeine, paracetamol and naproxen. The structural parameters of the NF membranes were estimated by water permeability measurements and retention measurements with aqueous solutions of organic, uncharged (glycerol) solutes. The effect of various operating conditions on the retention of solutes by the AFC 40 and AFC 80 membranes, such as applied transmembrane pressure, tangential feed flow velocity, feed solution concentration and ionic strength, were evaluated. It was found that the rejection of drugs was directly proportional to transmembrane pressure and feed flow rate. Due to the size difference between caffeine (MW = 194.9 g/mol), naproxen (MW = 230.2 g/mol) and paracetamol (MW = 151.16 g/mol), the AFC 40 membrane proved to be efficient for caffeine and naproxen, with rejection efficiencies of 88% and 99%, respectively. In contrast, the AFC 80 membrane proved to be better for paracetamol, with a rejection efficiency of 96% (and rejection efficiency of 100% for caffeine and naproxen). It was also observed that the rejection efficiency of the AFC 80 membrane did not change with changes in external operating conditions compared to the AFC 40 membrane. The membrane performance was predicted using the Spiegler–Kedem model based on irreversible thermodynamics, which was successfully used to explain the transport mechanism of solutes through the AFC 40 and AFC 80 membranes in the NF process.

Abstract:Nanofiltration (NF) is an effective technology for micropollutants retention for production of high quality reclaimed water. However, limited information is available about the effects of temperature on the performance of NF on micropollutants rejections. In this paper, the behaviors and mechanisms of micropollutants rejections by two commercial NF membranes (VNF1 and VNF2) were studied under different temperatures. Based on the Donnan Steric Pore Model with Dielectric Exclusion (DSPM-DE) model, the mathematical functions were first established to describe the relationship between pore size (rp) and temperature (T) as well as the relationship of water permeability (A) with temperature (T). The DSPM-DE model incorporated with temperature functions were used to predict micropollutants rejections by NF membranes at given temperature values. The results showed that the increase of temperature could lead to the increase of NF membranes' pore size, water flux as well as the micropollutants' diffusivities. The rejection rates of positively and neutrally charged micropollutants decreased with temperature increase, which was mainly due to the attenuation of steric hindrance effect. For the negatively charged micropollutants, temperature had negligible effect on them, which was possibly facilitated by the co-function of electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance effect. Our study also showed that the predicted rejection values of neutrally and positively charged micropollutants decreased with temperature increase, in agreement with those of the experimental data. Compared with the real experimental rejections, the average relative errors of predicted values were 6.20% and 9.03% for VNF1 and VNF2, respectively. But for benzotriazole, the average relative error was as higher as 20.44%, possibly due to its adsorption onto NF membranes. This work provides valuable insights for NF engineering applications and designs at different temperatures.
