Abstract:A PVC tube experiment was carried out to study the effects of planting density on growth characters and root morphological traits of three canopy-type maize(flat type,Nongda108;semi-compact type,Zhengdan958;compact type,CF008).The results indicated that the individual plant growth and root morphological traits of the three cultivars all deceased with the increase of planting density at the silking stage, while root morphological traits of ND108 were not significant affected when density increased from 1 plant/pot to 2 plants/pot.Simultaneously,specific root length(SRL) and specific root surface area(SRS) of ND108 significantly decreased, while those of ZD958 and CF008 maintained at reasonable value.Moreover,Ear/root ratio and dry matter allocation to root showed also different tendency for the three cultivars,i.e.high dry matter translocation to root while low root contribution to ear in ND108 vs.low dry matter translocation to root in ZD958 and CF008.Therefore,the genotype with flat canopy(ND108) tended to develop larger root system to achieve high competitive ability of individual plant,by which population growth and thus grain yield might be limited. While genotype with compact canopy(ZD958 and CF008) was likely to control competition among individuals and improve root absorption ability of individual plant to obtain high yield under high planting density.
