Abstract:Eight endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) , including 17α - estradiol (17α-E2) , estrone ( E1 ) , estradiol ( E2 ) , ethinylestradiol ( EE2 ) , estriol (E3), octylphenol (OP), nonyphenol (NP) and bisphenol A (BPA), were investigated in three sewage treatment plants (STPs) in southern China. Sampling was conducted along treatment process train from influent to effluent in four seasons, and the levels of EDCs were detected with solid phase extraction method and GC-MS instrument. The results showed that target EDCs were identified in all treatment units. EE2 and BPA were two dominant EDCs with to the maximum levels of 498.9 ng·L^-1 and 2652.5 ng·L^-1 , respectively. The concentrations of other six EDCs were lower than 100 ng·L^-1. Biological processes in two STPs were effective in removing EE2, E3, NP, OP and BPA, with average removal ratio between 57% and 85%. It was however less effective for El, E2 and 17α-E2 removal. Primary treatment of coagulation and sedimentation can only remove up to 18% of EDCs. It was also found that UV irradiation as disinfection method has no obvious influence on EDCs removal. Seasonal variation of EDCs levels was significant, and the total concentrations of eight EDCs in dry season was 2. 5 - 7. 8 times those in wet season. This study is of significance in understanding distribution and transformation of EDCs in STPs in southern China.
