Abstract:The soils from areas with different sea level elevations and land use were sampled in the water fluctuation zone (WFZ) in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) along the Yangzi River. This research investigated the nitrogen (N) distribution characteristics of different soils in alternately waterlogged and drained environments the WFZ of the TGR. The results showed the TN concentration in soils in the inundated area was higher than that in the non-inundated area. The TN concentration in the surface soils (0-20 cm) increased from 0.64 to 0.89 g/kg from 145 m to the inundating line at 175 m. TN concentration decreased with increasing depth in the soils at the different sampling sites. The results reveal that the N exchange between soils and water possibly occurred in the surface soils in the WFZ in the TGR. The experiment of nitrogen sorption isotherms show the maximum N-sorption capacities (Qm) followed the sequence of yellow earth > purple soil > fluvo-aquic soil. For different land usage, the maximum N-sorption capacities followed the sequence of desolate land > dry land > woodland > paddy field > beach land. The N total release from soils to water was calculated, and a preliminary assessment showed that the soils N release contributions to the eutrophication of water was 0.271 mg/L in the TGR after the first inundating process.
