Abstract:In this letter, a WDM-OFDM-PON architecture using LDPC code is brought up to increase transmission range and system performance. In optical line terminal (OLT), LDPC-coded OFDM signal at 10-Gb/s is transmitted as downstream. At each optical network unit (ONU), the optical OFDM signal is demodulated with direct detection, and on-off keying date at 2.5-Gb/s is returned as upstream. Simulation results show that the transmission distance could exceed 20-km with negligible penalty.

Abstract:As the demand for high data volumes keeps increasing in optical access networks, transmission capacities and distance are becoming bottlenecks for passive optical networks (PONs). To solve this problem, a novel scheme based on multi-twin single sideband (SSB) modulation with direct detection is proposed and investigated in this paper. At the central office, two SSB signals are generated simultaneously with the same digital-to-analog converters (DACs). The twin-SSB signal is not only robust against frequency selected power fading introduced by chromatic dispersion (CD), but also improves the spectral efficiency (SE). By combining a twin-SSB technique with multi-band carrier-less amplitude/phase modulation (multi-CAP), different optical network units (ONUs) can be supported by flexible multi-band allocation based on software-reconfigurable optical transceivers. The Kramers-Kronig (KK) scheme is adopted on the ONU side to effectively mitigate the signal-signal beat interference (SSBI) induced by the square-law detection. The proposed system is extensively studied and validated with four sub-bands using 50 Gbps 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) modulation for each sub-band using numerical simulations. Digital pre-equalization is introduced at the transmitter-side to balance the performance of different ONUs. After system optimization, a bit error rate (BER) threshold for hard decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) code with 7% redundancy ratio (BER = 3.8 x 10(-3)) can be reached for all ONUs over 50-km standard single-mode fiber.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a distance-adaptive bandwidth allocation scheme to realize high-capacity long-reach orthogonal frequency division multiple access passive optical network (OFDMA PON) with cost-effective electro-absorption modulator (EAM). In our scheme, the subcarriers in downstream OFDM signal are properly allocated to the optical network units (ONUs) with different fiber transmission lengths. By this means, the detrimental influence of power fading induced by dispersion and chirp can be avoided, thus all OFDM subcarriers can be modulated with high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) format, leading to a high transmission capacity. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed, in which three ONUs with transmission distances of 25, 50, and 100 km are assigned with different subcarriers, respectively. By using distance-adaptive bandwidth allocation technique, an OFDM signal of 34.5 Gb/s is successfully delivered to the ONUs with a bit error ratio (BER) lower than 2 × 10(-3).

Abstract:The coherent passive optical network (PON) is a promising solution for the next generation of high-speed optical access network, capable of supporting 100G and beyond data rate. Moreover, the flexibility and adaptability of coherent PON (CPON) have attracted increasing interest. A flexible PON can enhance system throughput through adaptive modulation formats, baud rates, and coding techniques. One critical challenge for adaptive-modulation flexible CPON is the need for fast-tracking of the channel status, particularly for the downstream transmission. This is particularly important as signals with different modulation formats are continuous in downstream transmission. In the present study, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a pilot-aided digital signal processing (DSP) scheme in a 300 G flexible CPON based on 41664-QAMs, which avoids burst-signal processing in downstream transmission during modulation-format switching. The pilot symbols that we insert enable continuous tracking of the state-of-polarization, finite impulse response (FIR) coefficients for channel equalization, and carrier phase. The feasibility of the proposed pilot-aided DSP scheme was verified experimentally in four transmission cases involving different modulation formats. As a proof of concept, we achieved continuous signal processing in the downstream coherent signal detection, enabling 100-300 G flexible data transmission. We achieved total power budgets of 38, 30, and 20 dB for 25-GBaud polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) 41664-QAM signals after 20-km single-mode fiber (SMF), respectively.

Abstract:As the broadband applications continue rising, the solutions of high-speed passive optical network (PON) with large power budget are highly desired. Direct detection scheme combined with digital signal procession (DSP) has been considered as a promising candidate due to its low cost, low power consumption and simple architecture. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate 200 Gbs and 240 Gbs time division multiplexed passive optical network (TDM-PON) downstream transmissions based on four-level pulsed amplitude (PAM-4) modulation with direct detection in O-band. A high bandwidth thin film lithium niobate modulator is adopted to generate high Baudrate optical signal at the optical line terminal (OLT) side. A pre-amplified semiconductor optical amplifier SOA is employed at the optical network unit (ONU) side to improve the power budget. Several DSP algorithms are studied to compensate the linear and nonlinear distortions. We also propose a simplified Volterra nonlinear equalizer (S-VNLE) to reduce the computational complexity. Considering the soft-decision FEC (SD-FEC) threshold (1 102), over 29 dB and 28 dB power budgets are achieved respectively for 200 Gbs and 240 Gbs PON system after 20 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) based on our proposed S-VNLE.

Abstract:Abstract. In this study, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple direct detection passive optical network (PON) uplink transmission scheme based on frequency division multiplexing and polarization division multiplexing. Two optical network units (ONUs) are assigned to two different frequency bands at two different orthogonal polarization directions. At the optical line terminal, both ONU signals can be simultaneously detected by a single photodiode without utilizing any polarization control, polarization selection, or complicated polarization demultiplexing algorithms. As a proof-of-concept, the 2×ONU 80 Gbps 32-ary quadrature amplitude modulation Nyquist single carrier signals are successfully transmitted over 2 km standard single mode fiber or 20 km large effective area fiber with the assistance of frequency domain equalization and decision-directed least-mean-square. The measured bit error rate can be below the 7% pre-forward error correction threshold of 3.8×10−3. Meanwhile, this scheme is compatible with the widely used wavelength-division multiplexed PON, which shows the promising potential and feasibility of this proposal.

Abstract:For the first time, we proposed and demonstrated auxiliary management and control channel (AMCC) in frequency division multiplexing coherent passive optical network (FDM-PON) based on digital subcarriers (DCM) to transmit control information and reduce the latency of signal transmission. We propose an extraction algorithm to detect AMCC signals. A 4-band FDM QPSK coherent PON system of a total 100-Gbps data rate with a 24-Mbps non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal was demonstrated and the system performance at different modulation index (MI) was analyzed.

Abstract:Wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is a promising architecture for next-generation access networks because of its large bandwidth, protocol transparency and scalability. In this paper, we propose a cost-effective, high-speed upstream WDM-PON scheme adopting polarization division multiplexed (PDM) on-off keying (OOK) modulation at the optical network unit (ONU) and digital coherent/self-coherent detection with a novel blind dual-modulus equalization algorithm at the optical line terminal (OLT). As such, the upstream capacity can be directly enhanced at low ONU expenditure, and receiver sensitivity as well as power budget can be also improved. Abstract:A novel subband access scheme for multiband high-speed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) passive optical network (PON) is proposed, where the granularity of the bandwidth allocation is as small as the bandwidth of just one subcarrier and the ONUs only receives the desired subcarriers according to the bandwidth allocation strategy from the whole downstream OFDM signal without band limitation. Since the ONUs do not have to receive a complete OFDM band, low-bandwidth and low-speed devices can be used to reduce ONU cost. The algorithm used in the scheme is also explained in detail, and a 1-Tb/s experimental system is successfully established to prove the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:For the first time, we propose and demonstrate a novel three-level Signal allocation scheme OFDM PON architecture which makes the best use of OFDM characteristics. In the architecture, we produce five-carrier signal optically by MZM, use odd carriers modulating downlink data and retain even carriers for uplink data. Multiple signal distribution methods can be switched flexibly. By simulation, a small PON systems with four ONU based on this architecture was realized. Both the downlink and uplink transmission adopt 4-QAM-OFDM signal. The transmission rate will be demonstrated to exceed 10Gbit/s.

Abstract:High-capacity communication networks are built to provide high throughput and low latency to accommodate the growing demand for bandwidth. However, the provision of these features is subject to a robust underlying network, which can provide high capacity with maximum reliability in terms of the system's connection availability. This work optimizes an existing 2D spectral–spatial optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) passive optical network (PON) to maximize connection availability while maintaining desirable communication capacity and capital expenditure. Optimization is performed by employing ring topology at the feeder level, which is used to provide a redundant path in case of connection failures. Furthermore, high transmission capacity is ensured by utilizing a pseudo-3D double-weight zero cross-correlation (DW-ZCC) code. The analysis is performed with Optisystem simulations to observe the performance of the system in terms of bit error rate (BER), received power, and eye openings. It is observed that the introduction of ring topology at the feeder level of the PON does not impact the overall transmission capacity of the system. The system can still support maximum transmission capacity at receiver sensitivities of up to −19 dB. Reliability analysis also shows that the optimized ring-based architecture can provide desirable connection availability compared to the existing system.

Abstract:Recently, digital signal processing (DSP) methods have been extensively studied and various DSP-based schemes have been proposed for next-generation passive optical network (PON). In this paper, we combine the time-division-multiplexing (TDM) architecture with advanced DSP methods to achieve high spectrum-efficiency colorless transmission. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), as the original form of various DSP methods with frequency-domain equalization (FDE), is chosen for both upstream and downstream transmissions. In the TDM-PON based on OFDM (TDM-OFDM-PON) architecture, OFDM symbols are transmitted in different time slots instead of on-off-key (OOK) bits in conventional TDM-PON. This architecture can be extended for single-carrier with FDE easily. Due to the same TDMA scheme, it can achieve maximum compatibility with current TDM-PON. A DSP-based evolution scheme from conventional TDM-PON to TDM-OFDM-PON is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by upgrading the optical line terminal (OLT) to support both OOK and OFDM signals, which can maintain the current optical distribution network (ODN) and minimize the impact for the existing service and equipment.

Abstract:Recently,to enhance the receiver performance,there have been increasing interests in utilizing coherent technology in passive optical network(PON).However,the cost and complexity of the optical network unit(ONU) are big problems.So a novel self-coherent PON using 16QAM modulation is proposed and demonstrated by simulation.To control the cost of ONU,all lasers needed are centralized to the optical line terminal in this scheme.Meanwhile,the optical carrier for uplink signal and local oscillator signal for coherent reception of downlink signal is generated through band-pass filter at the ONU.The simulation result proves that 10Gb/s 16QAM downlink signals can be successfully transmitted over 30km SMF at the EVM<10%.
Flexible Coherent Optical Access: Architectures, Algorithms, and Demonstrations

Abstract:To cope with the explosive bandwidth demand, significant progress has been made in the ITU-T standardization sector to define a higher-speed passive optical network (PON) with a 50Gb/s line rate. Recently, 50G PON becomes mature gradually, which means it is time to discuss beyond 50G PON. For ensuring an acceptable optical power budget, beyond 50G PON will potentially use coherent technologies, which can simultaneously promote the applications of flexible multiple access such as time/frequency-domain multiple access (TFDMA). In this paper, we will introduce the architectures, algorithms, and demonstrations for TFDMA-based coherent PON. The system architectures based on an ultra-simple coherent transceiver and specific signal spectra are designed to greatly reduce the cost of ONUs. Meanwhile, fast and low-complexity digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms are proposed for dealing with upstream and downstream signals. Based on the architectures and algorithms, we experimentally demonstrate the first real-time TFDMA-based coherent PON, which can support at most 256 end users, and peak line rates of 100Gb/s and 200Gb/s in the upstream and downstream scenarios, respectively. In conclusion, the proposed technologies for the coherent PON make it more possible to be applied in the future beyond 50G PON.

Abstract:The coherent passive optical network (PON) is a cost-effective point-to-multipoint solution to accommodate the ever-increasing traffic demands in the future optical access network. Recently, time and frequency division multiplexing (TFDM) coherent PON have attracted increasing interest, due to its advantages of providing low latency access and flexible bandwidth allocation. One critical challenge for TFDM-PON system is the upstream burst-mode digital signal processing (DSP). DSP should converge fast in the specific time slot to ensure low latency for subcarrier allocation. The conventional subcarrier recognition and demultiplexing are realized in the frequency domain. The process of time-frequency conversion introduces extra computational complexity if the burst-mode DSP use time-domain algorithms. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a data-aided DSP scheme for burst-mode detection in coherent TFDM-PON. Subcarrier demultiplexing is implemented in the time domain by using coarse and fine filtering. Coarse and fine filtering are achieved by convolving the signal with finite impulse response (FIR) pulse-shaping filters. Least square (LS) algorithm is used for channel estimation achieving fast convergence. With a 79.36-ns training sequence, -37.5-dBm and -29-dBm sensitivities are achieved for QPSK and 16QAM signal-based 200G TFDM-PON with four subcarriers after 20-km fiber transmission.
