Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are ubiquitous in indoor environment. They can emit from source into air, and subsequently penetrate human skin into blood through dermal uptake, causing adverse health effects. This study develops a two-layer analytical model to characterize the VOC/SVOC dermal uptake process, which is then extended to predict VOC emissions from two-layer building materials or furniture. Based on the model, the key transport parameters of chemicals in every skin or material layer are determined via a hybrid optimization method using data from experiments and literature. The measured key parameters of SVOCs for dermal uptake are more accurate than those from previous studies using empirical correlations. Moreover, the association between the absorption amount of studied chemicals into blood and age is preliminarily investigated. Further exposure analysis reveals that the contribution of dermal uptake to the total exposure can be comparable with that of inhalation for the examined SVOCs. This study makes the first attempt to accurately determine the key parameters of chemicals in skin, which is demonstrated to be critical for health risk assessment.

Abstract:Exposure to airborne semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in indoor and outdoor environments of humans may lead to adverse health risks. Thus, we established a model to evaluate exposure to airborne SVOCs. In this model, SVOCs phase-specific concentrations were estimated by a kinetic partition model accounting for particle dynamics. The exposure pathways to airborne SVOCs included inhalation exposure to gas- and particle-phases, dermal exposure by direct gas-to-skin pathway and dermal exposure by direct particle deposition. Exposures of defined "reference people" to two typical classifications of SVOCs, one generated from both indoor and outdoor sources, represented by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and the other generated mainly from only indoor sources, represented by di 2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), were analyzed as an example application of the model. For PAHs with higher volatility, inhalation exposure to gas-phase, ranging from 6.03 to 16.4 ng/kg/d, accounted for the most of the exposure to the airborne phases. For PAHs with lower volatility, inhalation exposure to particle-phase, ranging from 1.48 to 1.53 ng/kg/d, was the most important exposure pathway. As for DEHP, dermal exposure via direct gas-to-skin pathway was 460 ng/kg/d, which was the most striking exposure pathway when the barrier effect of clothing was neglected.

Abstract:A critical review of the current state of knowledge of chemical emissions from indoor sources, partitioning among indoor compartments, and the ensuing indoor exposure leads to a proposal for a modular mechanistic framework for predicting human exposure to semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs). Mechanistically consistent source emission categories include solid, soft, frequent contact, applied, sprayed, and high temperature sources. Environmental compartments are the gas phase, airborne particles, settled dust, indoor surfaces, and clothing. Identified research needs are the development of dynamic emission models for several of the source emission categories and of estimation strategies for critical model parameters. The modular structure of the framework facilitates subsequent inclusion of new knowledge, other chemical classes of indoor pollutants, and additional mechanistic processes relevant to human exposure indoors. The framework may serve as the foundation for developing an open-source community model to better support collaborative research and improve access for application by stakeholders. Combining exposure estimates derived using this framework with toxicity data for different end points and toxicokinetic mechanisms will accelerate chemical risk prioritization, advance effective chemical management decisions, and protect public health.
Exposure to SVOCs from Inhaled Particles: Impact of Desorption

Abstract:Inhaled semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are simultaneously present in gas and particle phases. Particles desorb a fraction of their SVOCs moving through the human respiratory tract (RT). Quantifying such desorption is challenging but important since gas- and particle-phase SVOCs deposit in different locations in the RT, encountering different cell populations with varying health consequences. This paper presents a mass transfer model to quantify this desorption process in the head, tracheobronchial, and alveolar regions of the RT. The desorption of SVOCs from inhaled particles can be gauged using the ratio of particle residence time to the time required to achieve particle/gas equilibrium. Results indicate that the larger this ratio is, the more likely particles desorb the SVOCs they carry. For particles smaller than 0.5 μm diameter and SVOCs with a particle/gas partition coefficient (unitless) of 1010, accounting for desorption reduces the estimated particle-phase SVOC concentrations in the alveolar region by more than 35%; the reduction is almost 700% for 0.05 μm diameter particles. In hypothetical scenarios representing common indoor and outdoor situations, neglecting desorption significantly overestimates the concentration of ultrafine particle associated SVOCs in the alveolar region. This model is a preliminary step toward more nuanced estimates of exposure to inhaled SVOCs.

Abstract:Dermal exposure to indoor gas-phase semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) has recently received a great deal of attention, and this has included evaluating the role of clothing in this process. Several models have been developed to assess dermal exposure to SVOCs, based on the transient mass transfer of SVOCs from air to dermal capillaries. Assumptions of these models are either that clothing completely retards SVOC transport, or that there is an air gap of constant thickness between the clothing and the surface of the skin, which may lead to errors in the model calculations. To solve this problem, we tried to describe SVOC transport between clothing and epidermis by considering two parallel processes: partitioning of SVOCs by direct contact (ignored in existing models), and Fickian diffusion through the air gap. Predictions from the present model agree well with the experimental data found in the literature (dermal uptake of diethyl phthalate (DEP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) of a clothed participant). This study provides a useful tool to accurately assess dermal exposure to indoor SVOCs, especially for evaluating the effects of clothing on dermal exposure.
Role of clothing in transdermal uptake of gas-phase SVOCs: transient model development and evaluation

Abstract:Dermal exposure to gas-phase SVOCs plays a significant role in total exposure. Several studies have tried to better estimate dermal exposure to gas-phase SVOCs. However, only a few of them have considered the effect of clothing on dermal exposure. Based on existing models for estimating SVOC dermal exposure, a transient mass transfer model, which considers the flux of SVOCs from air through clothes (including two scenarios: partition to skin surface lipids by direct contact and diffuse through the air gap between clothes and lipids) to skin surface lipids, was proposed. Abstract:A proper quantitative understanding of the dynamic interaction between gas-phase semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) and airborne particles is important for human exposure assessment and risk evaluation. Questions regarding how to properly address gas/particle interactions have introduced uncertainty when predicting SVOC concentrations and assessing exposures to these compounds. In this study, we have developed a dimensionless description for the dynamic interaction between SVOCs and organic particles. A better criterion to judge whether the internal resistance (diffusion in and out of aerosols) is negligible compared with the external one (from bulk air to aerosol surfaces) is presented. The analysis is applicable regardless of the phase state of particles (either liquid or amorphous semisolid/solid). It is found that for both porous and nonporous particles, the internal resistance can be reasonably neglected for particles with diameters between 0.01 and 10 m if the particulate organic matter is in the liquid phase. A lumped description therefore can be applied to determine, with greater accuracy than in previous studies, the timescale required to attain gas/particle equilibrium for such particles. The instantaneous equilibrium assumption is found to be reasonable for relatively volatile species such as pyrene, but not for the less volatile species such as di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (DEHP). For DEHP and 2.5 m diameter particles, the instantaneous gas/particle equilibrium assumption can cause a two orders of magnitude error in the estimation of the gas-phase concentration and a factor of two error in the estimation of the particle-phase concentration.

Abstract:Indoor surfaces play an important role in the transport of, and exposure to, semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in buildings. In this study, we develop a model that accounts for SVOC transport mediated by particles and find that, due to large gas-particle partition coefficients along with large differences in Brownian and gas diffusivities, SVOC transport across concentration boundary layers is significantly enhanced in the presence of particles. Two important dimensionless parameters, Bi-m,Bi-g and Bi-m,Bi-g/(m,p), were identified: Bi-m,Bi-g is the ratio of 1) the characteristic time for the SVOC to transport across the concentration boundary layer to 2) the characteristic time for boundary layer to either be "swept" of SVOCs by particles or "saturated" by release of SVOCs from particles. This parameter can be regarded as a dimensionless mass transfer coefficient. Bi-m,Bi-g/Bi-m,Bi-p characterizes the SVOC mass associated with particles, relative to SVOCs in the gas-phase. Analysis on monodisperse particles shows that flux can be enhanced by as much as a factor of 5 over transport in the absence of particles, for a large particle/gas partition coefficient (log K-part = 13), small particles (d(p) similar to 0.1 mu m) and a small free stream velocity (U-infinity = 0.01 m s(-1)). As particle diameter decreases, flux enhancement tends to increase. However, as particles become very small (e.g., d(p) < 0.05 mu m), flux enhancement for SVOCs with log K-part = 13 decreases slightly. Particles larger than 2 mu m do not significantly influence the flux. An exponential correlation is found to fit the results for polydisperse particles associated with typical indoor environments, cooking and smoking. Two illustrative examples are used to show that, 1) the timescale for di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) to approach equilibrium between the gas and a surface is shortened from 3.0 years to 0.45 years; and 2) in the presence of particles, the gas-phase DEHP concentration and emission rate are predicted to be as much as 4 times higher by our model than that by prior model estimates. Abstract:There is an ongoing probing of the role of chemicals in the indoor environment. The majority of potential target substances are so-called very volatile, volatile, and semi-volatile organic compounds (VVOCs, VOCs, and SVOCs). Depending on their physical properties and the mass transfer conditions, they are distributed in or between the gas phase, particle phase, settled house dust, surface films, clothing, and other fabrics as well as the exposed skin and hair of the occupants themselves. Therefore, inhalation, ingestion, and dermal uptake all must be considered as relevant pathways for exposure assessment in human habitats. Exposure to VVOCs, VOCs, and SVOCs can be estimated by measuring their concentrations in relevant indoor compartments or by determining the amounts of the target compounds and/or their metabolites in urine and blood. Assessing the various routes of exposure often requires a combination of sophisticated and interdisciplinary theoretical background and experimental techniques. Consequently, close communication and collaboration between chemical and exposure scientists are needed to achieve a better understanding of human exposure to chemical substances in various indoor environments. Embedded in the toxicological context, this is the basis for assessing the corresponding health risks and for determining control strategies or approaches to limit such risks.
A Rapid Micro Chamber Method to Measure SVOC Emission and Transport Model Parameters.

Abstract:Assessing exposure to semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) that are emitted from consumer products and building materials in indoor environments is critical for reducing the associated health risks. Many modeling approaches have been developed for SVOC exposure assessment indoors, including the DustEx webtool. However, the applicability of these tools depends on the availability of model parameters such as the gas-phase concentration at equilibrium with the source material surface, y0, and the surface-air partition coefficient, Ks, both of which are typically determined in chamber experiments. In this study, we compared two types of chamber design, a macro chamber, which downscaled the dimensions of a room to a smaller size with roughly the same surface-to-volume ratio, and a micro chamber, which minimized the sink-to-source surface area ratio to shorten the time required to reach steady state. The results show that the two chambers with different sink-to-source surface area ratios yield comparable steady-state gas- and surface-phase concentrations for a range of plasticizers, while the micro chamber required significantly shorter times to reach steady state. Using y0 and Ks measured with the micro chamber, we conducted indoor exposure assessments for di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and di(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DEHT) with the updated DustEx webtool. The predicted concentration profiles correspond well with existing measurements and demonstrate the direct applicability of chamber data in exposure assessments.

Abstract:Settled dust is an important medium for semivolatile organic compound (SVOC) transport indoors. Understanding the mechanism of interaction between SVOCs and settled dust can greatly improve the exposure assessment. This study develops an analytical model to elucidate the mechanism of direct contact between SVOC sources and settled dust. The model incorporates the adsorption of SVOCs onto indoor surfaces, which was ignored in previous numerical models. Based on this model, a hybrid optimization method is applied to determine the key parameters of SVOC transport, i.e., the diffusion coefficient in the dust, the dust-air partition coefficient, and the chamber surface-air partition coefficient. Experiments of direct contact between SVOC source materials containing organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) and settled dust were conducted in chambers. The key parameters were determined by performing curve fitting using data collected from the OPFR chamber tests and from the literature on phthalates. The reliability and robustness of the model and measurement method are demonstrated by the high fitting accuracy and sensitivity analysis. The obtained key parameters are more accurate than those from correlations in prior studies. Further analysis indicates that dust-air partition coefficient plays an important role and the adsorption effect on surfaces cannot be neglected for SVOC transport.

Abstract:Measurements by semivolatile thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatography (SV-TAG) were used to investigate how semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) partition among indoor reservoirs in (1) a manufactured test house under controlled conditions (HOMEChem campaign) and (2) a single-family residence when vacant (H2 campaign). Data for phthalate diesters and siloxanes suggest that volatility-dependent partitioning processes modulate airborne SVOC concentrations through interactions with surface-laden condensed-phase reservoirs. Airborne concentrations of SVOCs with vapor pressures in the range of C13 to C23 alkanes were observed to be correlated with indoor air temperature. Observed temperature dependencies were quantitatively similar to theoretical predictions that assumed a surface-air boundary layer with equilibrium partitioning maintained at the air-surface interface. Airborne concentrations of SVOCs with vapor pressures corresponding to C25 to C31 alkanes correlated with airborne particle mass concentration. For SVOCs with higher vapor pressures, which are expected to be predominantly gaseous, correlations with particle mass concentration were weak or nonexistent. During primary particle emission events, enhanced gas-phase emissions from condensed-phase reservoirs partitioned to airborne particles, contributing substantially to organic particulate matter. An emission event related to oven-usage was inferred to deposit siloxanes in condensed-phase reservoirs throughout the house, leading to the possibility of reemission during subsequent periods with high particle loading.
Particle Release and Transport from Human Skin and Clothing: A CFD Modeling Methodology

Abstract:Particle release from human skin and clothing has been identified as an important contributor to particulate matter burden indoors. However, knowledge about modeling the coarse particle release from skin and clothing is limited. This study developed a new empirically validated CFD modeling methodology for particle release and transport from seated occupants in an office setting. We tested three modeling approaches for particle emissions: Uniform; Uniform + Localized; and Uniform + Localized with Body Motion; applied to four office scenarios involving a single occupant and two occupants facing each other at 1- and 2-m distances. Uniform particle emissions from skin and clothing underpredicted personal inhalation exposure by as much as 55%-80%. Combining uniform with localized emissions from the armpits drastically reduced the error margin to <10%. However, this modeling approach heavily underestimated particle mass exchange (cross-contamination) between the occupants. Accounting for the occupant's body motion-by applying the momentum theory method-yielded the most accurate personal exposure and cross-contamination results, with errors below 12%. The study suggests that for accurate modeling of particle release and transport from seated occupants indoors, localized body emissions in combination with simplified bodily movements need to be taken into account.

Abstract:Semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) emitted from building materials, consumer products, and occupant activities alter the composition of air in residences where people spend most of their time. Exposures to specific SVOCs potentially pose risks to human health. However, little is known about the chemical complexity, total burden, and dynamic behavior of SVOCs in residential environments. Furthermore, little is known about the influence of human occupancy on the emissions and fates of SVOCs in residential air. Here, we present the first-ever hourly measurements of airborne SVOCs in a residence during normal occupancy. We employ state-of-the-art semivolatile thermal-desorption aerosol gas chromatography (SV-TAG). Indoor air is shown consistently to contain much higher levels of SVOCs than outdoors, in terms of both abundance and chemical complexity. Time-series data are characterized by temperature-dependent elevated background levels for a broad suite of chemicals, underlining the importance of continuous emissions from static indoor sources. Substantial increases in SVOC concentrations were associated with episodic occupant activities, especially cooking and cleaning. The number of occupants within the residence showed little influence on the total airborne SVOC concentration. Enhanced ventilation was effective in reducing SVOCs in indoor air, but only temporarily; SVOCs recovered to previous levels within hours.
Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes: Placement of Wearable Passive Samplers Alters Exposure Profiles Observed

Abstract:Chemical exposures are a major risk factor for many diseases. Comprehensive characterization of personal exposures is necessary to highlight chemicals of concern and factors that influence these chemical exposure dynamics. For this purpose, wearable passive samplers can be applied to assess longitudinal personal exposures to airborne contaminants. Questions remain regarding the impact of sampler placement at different locations of the body on the exposure profiles observed and how these placements affect the monitoring of seasonal dynamics in exposures. This study assessed personal air contaminant exposure using passive samplers worn in parallel across 32 participant's wrists, chest, and shoes over 24 h. Samplers were analyzed by thermal desorption gas chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry. Personal exposure profiles were similar for about one-third of the 275 identified chemicals, irrespective of sampler placement. Signals of certain semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) were enhanced in shoes and, to a lesser extent, wrist samplers, as compared to those in chest samplers. Signals of volatile organic compounds were less impacted by sampler placement. Results showed that chest samplers predominantly captured more volatile exposures, as compared to those of particle-bound exposures, which may indicate predominant monitoring of chemicals via the inhalation route of exposure for chest samplers. In contrast, shoe samplers were more sensitive to particle-bound SVOCs. Seventy-one chemicals changed across participants between winter and summer in the same manner for two or more different sampler placements on the body, whereas 122 chemicals were observed to have seasonal differences in only one placement. Hence, the placement in certain cases significantly impacts exposure dynamics observed. This manuscript describes a mass transfer model to characterize the emission behaviors of decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5, the most abundant indoor cVMS) from skin lipids. A C-history method is introduced to determine the key parameters in the model, i.e., the initial concentration and diffusion coefficient of D5 inside the skin lipids. Experiments were conducted in a university classroom to examine the D5 emission behaviors by using a proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-TOF-MS). Data from the first class session of two typical days was applied to obtain the key parameters, which were subsequently used for predicting D5 concentrations in other class sessions. Good agreement between model predictions and experiments demonstrates the effectiveness of the model and parameter determination method. With the model, we found that the reuse of personal care products has a significant impact on the D5 emissions. In addition, the time-dependent emission rate and remaining amount of D5 inside the skin can also be calculated. These results indicate a fast decay pattern during the initial emission period, which is consistent with prior experimental studies.

Abstract:This study focuses on the semivolatile organic compound (SVOC) absorption through clothing and the skin. SVOCs are ubiquitous in daily life, in products like personal care items, plastics, and building materials. Understanding their permeation through the skin barrier is crucial for evaluating potential health risks of complete exposure. A PBPK model was developed to comprehend the dynamic interplay between SVOCs and human skin and to estimate tissue distribution throughout the body. The framework incorporated parameters such as skin permeability, physicochemical properties of the chemicals, and the impact of protective clothing and adsorbents. This model predicted the rate and extent of SVOC absorption under diverse scenarios. The PBPK predictions matched the experimental amount of mono-ethyl phthalate (MEP), a phthalate metabolite, when urine samples were collected for bare-skinned and clothed participants. Urine concentrations of MEP during a 6-hr exposure and for the next 48 hr show that clean clothing effectively decreased dermal uptake and the buildup of chemicals in the body. Additional removal of MEP was achieved through adsorption on activated carbon fabric. An increase in the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity or the Langmuir equilibrium constant further reduced the amount of MEP in the urine.

Abstract:Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) partition between the gas phase and airborne particles. The size distribution of particle-associated SVOCs impacts their fate in outdoor and indoor environments, as well as human exposure to these compounds and subsequent health risks. Allen et al. (1996) previously proposed that the rate of mass transfer can impact polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) partitioning among different sized particles, especially for time scales relevant to urban aerosols. The present study quantitatively builds on this idea, presenting a model that incorporates dynamic SVOC/particle interaction and applying this model to typical outdoor and indoor scenarios. The model indicates that the impact of mass transfer limitations on the size distribution of a particle-associated SVOC can be evaluated by the ratio of the time to achieve gas–particle equilibrium relative to the residence time of particles. The higher this ratio, the greater the influence of mass transfer limitations on the size distribution of particle-associated SVOCs. The influence of such constraints is largest on the fraction of particle-associated SVOCs in the coarse mode (>2μm). Predictions from the model have been found to be in reasonable agreement with size distributions measured for PAHs at roadside and suburban locations in Japan. The model also quantitatively explains shifts in the size distributions of particle associated SVOCs compared to those for particle mass, and the manner in which these shifts vary with temperature and an SVOC's molecular weight.

Abstract:Semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) can be easily adsorbed on the suspended particulate matter (PM), and the exchange of SVOCs across the air-particle interface is crucial for the determination of their exposure on human. In the present study, an airborne. particle with a diameter of 2.5 mu m is fully reconstructed and applied to investigate the SVOCs transport mechanism and the adsorption/desorption process. The pore size distribution of the particle is statistically estimated, based on which Knudsen and Fick difftision mechanisms are considered. The sorption process between the adsorbed SVOCs on the element carbon (EC) and SVOCs in organic matter (OM) is performed with Langmuir-isotherm model. The effective diffusivity in particle is numerically predicted and compared with the existing empirical study. The influences of the equilibrium sorption constant and the volume fraction of organic matter and carbon on the dynamic interaction process are also explored. Results show that the effective diffusivity of the PM particle with low porosity predicted with the present model is much lower than that adopted by the Bruggeman equation. The amount of adsorbed di-2-ethyhexyl phthalate (DEHP) on EC is predominant compared with the gas phase in pores and dissolved phase in PM. The total-amount of DEHP transporting from air to the PM particle is highly influenced by the equilibrium sorption constant and the volume fraction of EC. The influence of Volume fraction of OM on the total amount of adsorbed DEHP is slight. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:<p>Exposure to indoor and outdoor semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) poses a significant threat to human health. The dynamic mass transfer of SVOCs between gas and particles, especially those containing high-viscosity organic matter, plays an important role in determining the behavior of indoor and outdoor SVOCs and their exposure risk to human health. In this study, four simplified methods are proposed to characterize the dynamic interaction of SVOCs between gas and particles based on an analytical solution of the mass transfer model. The methods entail neither complex series calculations nor solutions to transcendental equations to estimate the SVOC dynamic behavior between the gas and particle phases. Through analysis, the critical value of mass Fourier number, i.e., 0.18, and the critical values of mass Biot number, i.e., 0.1 and 20, are used to divide the ranges of application of the different methods into six zones. The results calculated demonstrate that the simplified methods are sufficiently accurate to estimate the saturation state of SVOCs in viscous particles with different organic species. Based on these methods, the internal SVOC distribution in the particles and the time to reach equilibrium are discussed. The results calculated for benzo[a]pyrene between the gas phase and different particles show that the viscosity of the organic species in the particles has a significant impact on the sorption saturation degree of the SVOCs. Thus, caution should be exercised when the equilibrium assumption is made for studying the interaction of SVOCs between gas and particle phases, especially in the case of particles comprising organic species of high viscosities.</p>
