Abstract:We present a new method of achieving multiple foci with sub-diffraction resolution along the axis direction in the focusing field, based on phase and polarization modulation. Through vectorial diffraction theory, the axial multiple foci field has been presented and analyzed, when a seven-belt phase mask with 0/pi phase delay is exploited. The exciting and depleting field is produced by the radially and azimuthally polarized beam, respectively. The results show that the proposed method can be exploited in paralleled super-resolution fluorescence microscope.

Abstract:We demonstrated experimentally the formation of the photorefractive filament array in PDMs by a femtosecond pulse laser. Using an optical microscopy and a fast CCD camera, we recorded the formation processes. The results showed that, by special design of the femtosecond laser parameters and the optical configurations, filaments can be placed in an orderly 1D or 2D arrangement array, and be reflected. Based on these observations, we have established a theoretical model to simulate the filaments.

Abstract:We studied the effects of different peak powers and initial pulse shapes during femtosecond laser pulse propagation in air. The full 3D simulation result showed that there was a bundle of discontinuous filaments along intense femtosecond laser pulse propagation axis. Comparisons between pulses with different input peak powers and initial pulse shapes could help us to find ways for forming long and uniform plasma channel in air.

Abstract:We report on the generation of branched optical filaments in air by astigmatically focusing intense femtosecond laser pulses with a pair of orthogonal cylindrical lenses. It is found that the branching angle can be controlled by changing the distance between the two foci of the cylindrical lenses. The evolution of the filament is systematically investigated by capturing beam cross-section profiles at different locations along its propagation direction. The experimental observation is successfully reproduced by theoretical simulations.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser filamentation is generally initialized from unpredictable symmetry breaking caused by random noise, causing it to be barely controlled. However, it is always anticipated for stable and controllable filamentation.We present and demonstrate the idea that hybridly polarized vector fields with axial symmetry broken polarization, associated with a pair of orthogonally linearly polarized vortices carrying the opposite-handed orbital angular momenta, could achieve controllable and robust multiple filamentation. Here, our motivation is to unveil the underlying physics behind such controllable and robust multiple filamentation. The symmetry breaking should first be actively controllable and then be able to effectively inhibit random noise. Robust multiple filamentation is inseparable from the fact that the phases between the multiple filaments are always locked. In contrast, uncontrollable multiple filamentation is always accompanied with loss of phase, i.e., the multiple filaments become incoherent to each other. Our results may offer a suggestion for achieving controllable and robust multiple filamentation in other systems.
Filamentation and Temporal Reshaping of A Femtosecond Pulse in Fused Silica

Abstract:The filamentation of a focused femtosecond pulse in fused silica was systemically investigated both experimentally and numerically. We observed the different filamentation of a laser pulse under different external focusing conditions and input energy experimentally. For instance, a focused femtosecond laser pulse with an energy of 3.3 muJ induced a long electron plasma filament for an effective numerical aperture (NA) of 0.01 of focusing objective, an electron plasma filament with two-foci structure for 0.04 effective NA, and a short filament for effective NA of 0.09. In theory, the numerical results of the extended nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation agreed with experimental results under different focusing conditions and energy. Moreover, under different focusing conditions we found the filamentation is connected with different temporal reshaping behaviors, and the temporal compression of the reshaped laser pulse in propagation is responsible for the two-foci structure of an electron plasma filament.

Abstract:Laser filamentation is a spectacular phenomenon where the self-focusing of the laser pulse generates ionizing light channels. Many applications of filamentation, such as the laser lightning rod, require the generation of superfilaments, long plasma channels of higher electron density than normal filaments. Using a multifocal phase mask, we demonstrate an extension of the superfilamentation length of a focused terawatt laser beam. Optimized superfilaments show increased energy deposition compared to a normal gaussian beam and an extension of their length by at least a factor two. When put in contact with a high voltage electrode, the guiding of a single plasma column with a length of ∼1 m is observed. The length of an air waveguide generated by a vortex laser pulse is also increased by a factor 2 in the presence of the phase mask.

Abstract:Multiple foci and a long filament are observed when we focus a femtosecond laser pulse into a fused-silica sample. The dependences of the intensity distribution of the plasma luminescence on the pulse energy and the numerical aperture (NA) of the focusing objective are investigated. Multiple foci are observed when NA of </=0.65 . A long filament tail is formed instead of multiple foci when the NA is 0.85. A physical image of femtoseond pulse propagation is given by a model based on the nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Abstract:Multi-filamentation opens new degrees of freedom for manipulating electromagnetic waves in air. However, without control, multiple filament interactions, including attraction, repulsion or fusion often result in formation of complex disordered filament distributions. Moreover, high power beams conventionally used in multi-filament formation experiments often cause significant surface damage. The growing number of applications for laser filaments requires fine control of their formation and propagation. We demonstrate, experimentally and theoretically, that the attraction and fusion of ultrashort beams with initial powers below the critical value enable the eventual formation of a filament downstream. Filament formation is delayed to a predetermined distance in space, avoiding optical damage to external beam optics while still enabling robust filaments with controllable properties as if formed from a single high power beam. This paradigm introduces new opportunities for filament engineering eliminating the need to use high peak power lasers sources.

Abstract:Results of laboratory experiments on control of the filamentation domain of a focused femtosecond laser beam with a spatially structured (with a deformable mirror) wavefront are described. Aberration beams consisting of coherent interleaved ring subapertures obtained with a deformable mirror of specific form are studied. This allows producing inhomogeneities in the distribution of the optical field amplitude during laser beam propagation; these inhomogeneities can subsequently become seeds for light filaments. This approach to control high-power radiation filamentation does not require compensation for distortions of the initial beam profile; on the contrary, it is based on a controllable introduction of pre-calculated wavefront aberrations.

Abstract:The characteristics of the multiple filaments formed by prefocused and freely propagating femtosecond laser pulses are investigated and compared. It is shown in our experiments that the diameter, length, stability, and interaction for the two cases can be quite different. The filaments formed by prefocused beam indicate dynamic spatial evolution with higher laser intensity and electron density. They have a typical diameter of 100 mu m are of shorter length. In the free propagation case, the filaments exhibit interesting properties such as hundred-meter propagation distance and mm-size diameter. Moreover, only the interaction of the filaments with the energy background affects the evolution of the filaments. Filament-filament interactions such as the filament splitting and merging were not observed in this case.

Abstract:The filamentation of two co-propagated femtosecond (fs) laser pulses in air is studied by numerical simulation. Depending on the different initial separation distances, relative phase shift and crossing angles, simulations show attraction, fusion, repulsion and collision of the two pulses. A long plasma channel can be formed by two in-phase pulses with small separation distance and cross angle. The coupling of two laser beam becomes weaker when the separation distance or cross angle between two beams is larger. In this case, the filamentation of each pulse develops independently. Our simulation results will be helpful for understanding the effect of the initial amplitude and phase modulation of laser pulse on the filamentation characteristics.

Abstract:To improve the abruptly autofocusing property of circular Airy beam, we propose a method to generate multiple circular Airy beams (MCAB) carrying lens phase factors using a spatial light modulator (SLM). The propagation dynamics of this kind of beam is theoretically simulated, as well as experimentally verified. It is shown that four identical beams are produced symmetrically and they can move toward the center simultaneously. By changing the lens phase information encoded in the SLM, we can achieve different focal positions and focal intensities as we want. With the same parameters, compared with a single circular Airy beam (SCAB), there are two focal planes and the abruptly autofocusing property can be greatly enhanced. It may have some applications in various fields.

Abstract:Extending the length of femtosecond laser filamentation has always been desired for practical applications. Here, we demonstrate that significant extending of a single filament in BK7 glass can be achieved by constructing phase-nested beams. The filamentation and the following energy replenishment are assembled in a single phase-nested beam. The central part of the phase-nested beam is an apertured Gaussian beam, which is focused into one focal spot to produce a short filament. In contrast, the rest of the annular part converges gradually towards the central axis to continuously replenish the energy for supporting the regeneration of filaments. The common-path generating system ensures the stability of generated filaments and easily optimizes the beam parameters to obtain the longest high-quality filament due to its flexibility. In addition, we discuss the significance of continuous replenishment for extending filaments and the potential for generating more extended filaments based on this method.

Abstract:Using variational analysis, the nonlinear equation is simplified. The filamentation dynamics is analogous to the problem of a particle moving in a potential well, then self-focusing, diffraction and multiple-photon ionization mechanisms are denoted by non dimensional symbols. The evolvement of beam power, radius, wavefront curvature, and temporal profile is discussed with different initial conditions. The results are qualitatively coincident with some major experimental observations such as filamentation and refocus phenomenon.
Filamentation of Femtosecond Vector Beams

Abstract:We numerically study the filamentation of femtosecond vector beams with spatially varying polarization profiles in air. The vector beams include azimuthal, radial, and spiral cylindrical vector beams (CVBs), as well as low-order full Poincaré beams (FPBs) with star and lemon polarization topologies. Comparing the filamentation of CVBs to that of a circularly polarized Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beam, we found that CVBs undergo filamentation more easily due to their more effective nonlinear focusing, in contrast to the LG beam. In the case of low-order FPBs, we examined the role of the constituent orthogonally polarized spatial modes in their filamentation process. Our findings revealed that the Gaussian mode within these beams primarily contributes to their filamentation. Additionally, when compared to a linearly polarized Gaussian beam, star and lemon FPBs displayed greater resistance to filamentation. Furthermore, we investigated the evolution of polarization profiles of the beams during filamentation. We observed that the polarization profiles of CVBs remained largely unchanged. In contrast, the polarization profiles of the FPBs underwent significant non-uniform changes due to differences in accumulated nonlinear phase and Gouy phase among the constituent modes

Abstract:By "seeing" the green two-photon luminescence, two separate focusing points are observed on the propagation axis of a converging femtosecond laser beam in a ZnO single crystal rod. It is found that the self-focusing effect makes a significant contribution to the formation of the first focusing point, while the second focusing point is caused by self-refocusing. The position of the first focusing point is in good agreement with the value predicted by a model developed by Chin and his co-workers. These experimental findings could be the unprecedented evidence for the self-focusing and refocusing effect of the femtosecond laser filament propagation in nonlinear media.

Abstract:Influence of random initial amplitude perturbations on the filamentation of prefocused femtosecond laser pulses is numerically studied.Simulations are performed for the filamentation of laser pulses with different modulation degrees and initial geometric focusings.The transverse waist of the laser beam is 5 mm.The behavior of the filament is strongly affected by the initial non-uniformity of the laser pulse envelope for a short initial focal length（f=1 m）.In this case,the filament and plasma channel can survive for a longer distance with a small initial amplitude perturbation.For a laser pulse focused by a lens with a long focal length（f=4 m）,decrease in the initial perturbation does not contribute to the length of the filament and the plasma channel.
Efficient Subwavelength Focusing of Light with a Long Focal Depth.

Abstract:We demonstrate an efficient method for far-field subwavelength focusing by a novel two-component axicon structure. Annular beams generated by a fiber axicon are focused using a micro-cone reflector, creating a quasi-Bessel beam with a high convergence angle of up to 40°. A center focal spot diameter of 0.41λ was achieved at a power efficiency of over 40%, with a focal depth of 9λ and a working distance as long as 35 μm. We further demonstrate that experimental knife-edge measurements mapping the beam focal intensity agree with numerical simulations of the structure. This method shows demonstrable promise in overcoming the optical focusing limit of single-element axicons and great potential for use in high tolerance, high-resolution applications in optical systems.

Abstract:Recently, annular beams have been developed to rapidly fabricate microscope tubular structures via two-photon polymerization, but the distribution of the light field is limited to a ring pattern. Here a Fresnel lens is designed and applied to modulate the light field into a uniform quadrangle or hexagon shape with controllable diameters. By applying a spatial light modulator to load the phase information of the Fresnel lens, quadrangle and hexagon structures are achieved through single exposure of a femtosecond laser. A 3 x 6 array of structures is made within 9 s. Comparing with the conventional holographic processing, this method shows higher uniformity, high efficiency, better flexibility, and easy operation. The approach exhibited a promising prospect in rapidly fabricating structures such as tissue engineering scaffolds and variously shaped tubular arrays.
