Abstract:To further enhance the hardness, wear, and corrosion resistance of high-entropy alloy (HEA) coatings, an AlCoCrFeNi-WC-WS2 composite coating was prepared on the surface of cast iron using laser cladding technology. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses as well as microhardness, friction and wear, and electrochemical tests were performed to characterize and analyze the phase structure, composition, and forming quality of coating. The effects of process parameters such as laser power and scan rate on the microstructure and properties of coating were evaluated. With the increase in laser power, the amount of unmelted powder, cracks, and pores gradually decreases inside the coating, and the thickness and density increase. The coating is mainly composed of face-centered cubic (FCC) phase, carbide-reinforcing phase, and WS2 self-lubricating phase. WC and its in situ synthesized chromium and iron carbide increased the hardness of coating by 3-4 times of the substrate, and the maximum hardness can reach 1187.2 HV. WS2 exists as the self-lubricating phase in the coating, ensuring the formation and stability of lubricating film during friction and wear, helping the coating have favorable wear resistance. In addition, a compact passive film is formed by the corrosion-resistant elements Co, Cr, and Ni, enabling the coating to have great corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution.

Abstract:Laser cladding is a powerful surface strengthening technology that combines with high precision forming and low substrate damage to endow components with high surface performance. Fe-based coatings have been widely used in the surface engineering of many mechanical components. As the demand for higher performance and longer service life for components increases, the design and rication of new laser cladded coatings are expected to improve. This paper reviews recent research results of our team on laser cladding of novel Fe-based coatings, such as nano-bainite Fe-based coating, ultra-fine eutectic Fe-based coating, particle reinforced martensite coating, and high-hardness amorphous Fe-based coating. The study results are presented from the perspectives of the design, microstructure, and mechanical properties of these novel coating materials.
High Power Diode Laser Cladding of Co-based Alloy Coating under Temperature Field Control

Abstract:Co-based alloy(Stellite 6) coatings were prepared on 42CrMo4 plates by using high power diode laser with the nominal output power of 3.5 kW.Optical microscope and micro-hardness tester were used to characterize the morphology,microstructure and the hardness profile of the coatings.The effects of controlling the temperature field of the molten pool on microstructures and micro-hardness of these coatings were investigated.The results reveal that the dilution rate,morphology,microstructure and property of the Co-based alloy coatings can be adjusted under the closed-loop control of molten pool temperature.On the condition that the powder feed rate of 22.6 g/min,laser beam scanning rate of 1 m/min,and laser power of 1.5 kW,a Co-based alloy coating with nearly non-dilution was obtained by properly employing process parameters based on this adjustment approach.The Co-based alloy consisted of planar grains,cellular grains,fine dendrite grains and equiaxed grains from the interface to the top of the coating.It had good metallurgical bond with the substrate and its micro-hardness was up to HV600.

Abstract:Fe–Co–B–Si–C–Nb amorphous composite coating about 0.6mm in thickness was fabricated by using a one-step laser cladding method. Microstructures and phases were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis. Microhardness and wear resistance tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties of this coating. Near the interface of coating/substrate, the region showed a layered microstructure, which could be generally categorized into three layers: layer I (columnar dendrites phase), layer II (equiaxed dendrites phase) and layer III (amorphous-particle composite phase). The main reason for this layered structure was due to the difference in chemical compositions of the three layers. With regard to mechanical properties, the microhardness and wear resistance of the Fe–Co–B–Si–C–Nb amorphous composite coating also exhibited layered characteristics. The mean value of the microhardness for layer I, layer II and layer III was 729, 680 and 1245HV, respectively. The friction coefficient of the transitional layer III was 0.28 times lower than that of the substrate under the same sliding friction condition.

Abstract:High-density amorphous coating with FeCoCrMoCBY bulk alloy as cladding material was fabricated by laser cladding on the surface of mild steel.The effect of different laser power on formation and microstructure of the coatings was discussed.The microhardness and corrosion resistance of the coating were tested by microhardness tester and electrochemical work station.The results show that the coatings of good formation and typically metallurgical bonding with the substrate is obtained,when laser power are changing from 17.6 W to 20.8 W with other parameter fixed.With the increase of laser power,the dilution rates go up,the tendency of cracks rise and the degree of amorphization decrease in the coating.When laser power is 17.6 W,the coating is mainly amorphous,the dilution rate is less than 24.2％,and the structure of the coating is dense,which includes heat affected zone,bon-ding zone and cladding zone.Moreover,the average microhardness of the coating is 1 330HV,which is about 9 times higher than the substrate.And the coating has more excellent corrosion resistance than 316L stainless steel in the 3.5％NaCl solution.

Abstract:Appropriate laser cladding processing parameters for a Ni-Fe-Cr based alloy coating with good quality were studied using 3.5 kW diode laser.The characterization of the coating was investigated,and the influence of each parameter was analyzed.The mechanical properties and wear resistance of the coating were compared with the corresponding chemical composition wrought and cast materials.The results showed that a coating with aspect ratio about 3,dilution ratio 8%-10%and wetting angle 35o-50°could be formed with the laser power 1200-1500 W,travelling speed 8-10 mm/s,powder feed rate 16-18 g/min and shield gas flow 15 l/min.The tensile strength of the coating reached 953 MPa which was higher than that of wrought material 918 MPa and cast material 830 MPa.The microhardness of multi-layer coating was higher than that of single layer coating.The wear resistance of the coating was at the same level with the wrought and cast materials.

Abstract:The Fe-Cr-Mo-B-C coating was prepared on the 45 steel by laser cladding with different process parameters. The phase, morphology and microstructure of the obtained coatings were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), laser scanning microscope (LSM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. The influence of parameters on the crystallization, porosity, microhardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the coatings was explored. As a result, the increase of laser power or overlap rate will cause more serious crystallization, porosity and even cracks, which can reduce the comprehensive properties of the coatings. The microhardness of the coatings is determined by the amorphous phase as well as the hard phase B6Fe23 and Cr2B. By analyzing the performance of the coating, it is determined that the optimal conditions of the laser cladding is the power of 1400 W with the overlap rate of 30%.

Abstract:Fe-Co-B-Si-Nb coatings were fabricated on the surface of low carbon steel using high power diode laser cladding of [(Fe0.5Co0.5)(0.75)B0.2Si0.05](95.7)Nb-4.3 amorphous powders at three different scanning speeds of 6, 17 and 50 m/s. At each scanning speed, laser power was optimized to obtain low dilution ratio. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometer and electron probe micro analysis were carried out to characterize the microstructure and chemical composition of the cladded coatings. Differential scanning calorimetry was also carried out to investigate the fraction of the amorphous phase. The results showed that dilution ratio and scanning speed were the two main factors for fabricating Fe-Co-B-Si-Nb amorphous coating by high power diode laser cladding. Low dilution ratio was crucial for the formation of amorphous phase. When the dilution ratio was low, the fraction of amorphous phase in the cladded coatings increased upon increasing the scanning speed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The Fe/Ni-based coatings fabricated by high power diode laser (HPDL) cladding (expressed as laser clad layers) were used as the renovated or modified layers formed on a 4Cr5MoSiV1 steel substrate. The laser clad layers with high strength ceramic particles were prepared on the steel by means of an industrial set up so as to improve the mechanical and tribological properties of the metal substrate. The microstructure and phase constituents, as well as microhardness and wear properties of the laser clad layers were analysed in detail. The carbides or ceramic phases were dispersed within grains for Fe/Ni based clad layer. Especially, the two kinds of Ni/Fe based clad layers containing WC particles present excellent properties combined with a high hardness and a good dry friction wear and impact abrasive wear resistance, greatly prolonging the service life of metal components. These laser clad layers were widely used in electric power industry, such as steam turbines, hydroturbine, boiler tube, valve body in power station. In addition, the laser clad layers have been used for the metal component in the coal and mining industries.

Abstract:The Fe-Co-B-Si-Nb alloy coatings were cladded on the mild carbon steel surface by a high power diode laser.The phase aggregate and microstructure were analyzed by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscope(SEM),respectively.The size of coatings was measured by optical microscope,and microhardness was assessed using Vickers microhardness tester.The effect of laser power on coatings was studied.The results show that the coating dilution increases with increasing laser power when the other parameters are fixed.When the laser power was 1 050 W,an amorphous phase occurred in the coating.Granular crystals and a large grey area were observed in the middle of the coating.With increasing laser power,crystalline phases in the coating gradually increased and snow-like crystals were formed in the middle of the coating.The microstructures on the coating-substrate interface were plane crystal and columnar-dendrite crystals,which exhibited obvious extensive growth characteristics.The hardness of the coating decreased with increasing laser power.

Abstract:Fe-based amorphous/nanocrystalline coatings were fabricated with industrial FeCoCrMoCBY alloy plate on the mild steel surface by laser cladding. The formation, microstructure were investigated with optical microscope (OM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicate that few pore and just only some cracks are formed in all of the coatings. With increase of heat input, some crystal phases of a-Fe, Fe3C and Fe23C6 are precipitated gradually in the coating layers, and the microhardness of the coating layers decreases gradually, while the maximum microhardness is up to 1300 Hv near to 5 times high than that of substrate. Though the passive currents of coating layers increase with increase of heat input, all of coating layers exhibit low corrosion current density, passive current density and wide passive region, which means all of coating layers present excellent corrosion resistance, even more superiors than that of 316L stainless steel in NaCl solution.

Abstract:An investigation is reported on crack-free laser clad Fe-based alloy by use of biaxial powder feeding shielded with argon gas. The microstructure and phase structure of the coating were studied, and mechanical properties were analyzed through hardness, tension strength and wear resistance of the coating. Microstructure analysis showed that there was retained austenite with spherical particles distributed therein in the interdendritic and nearby grain boundary regions. The mechanical test results showed that net-like distributed retained austenite in the interdendritic region had certain toughening effect through blunting crack-tip. Under wear condition of high sliding speed and high loading, the wear resistance of the coating with net-like retained austenite was much higher than that of the coating with some discontinuous carbide network or carbide blocks. The results showed that toughening of laser clad Fe-based alloy with high hardness over 850HV could be achieved by modifying interdendritic phases from net-like carbide to net-like austenite with spherical particles.

Abstract:In this paper, high-speed laser cladding technology with a scanning speed of 40 mm/s was used to clad the ductile iron surface with the Fe-based alloy coating. The coatings' microstructure, element distribution, crystallographic structure, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance were investigated by using an optical microscope, SEM, XRD, friction and wear testing machine, super depth-of-field microscope, and electrochemical workstation. The results show that the microstructure of the coating is mainly γ-Fe solid solution and carbide eutectic structure. The phases of the coating are FCC phase (γ-Fe dominated), BCC phase, and carbide. The elemental distribution of the coating cross-section elements is uniform, and no quality obvious defects such as large gas pores and cracks are found. The coating mass loss was 60.0% and 47.1% of the substrate for different friction parameters and the more significant coating oxide build-up phenomenon with increased loading force. The self-corrosion rate of the coating was 0.006 g/m 2 ·h, and the substrate was 0.042 g/m 2 ·h; the maximum impedance value of the coating (1.34×10 4 Ω·cm 2 ) was increased 20 times based on the substrate (619.2 Ω·cm 2 ). In summary, Fe-based coatings with these process parameters can repair failed ductile iron parts and significantly extend their service life.

Abstract:A Fe-based coating with cracks-free,low dilution and good forming was deposited by high-power CO2 laser cladding technique.The microstructure of this coating was observed and analyzed by optic microscope(OM),scanning electron microscope(SEM),transmission electron microscope(TEM) and X-ray diffraction(XRD),and its mechanical properties were tested by means of hardness tests and tensile tests.The results show that the microstructure of this coating consists of uniformly distributed nanostructured bainite and retained austenite.The plates of bainitic ferrite are 50～80 nm thick,and each plate is separated by an even finer film of retained austenite with a width of 10～30 nm.The average hardness of coatings is about 610 HV,the tensile strength and elongation are 1 280 MPa and 6.41 % respectively.The fracture morphology exhibits the characteristics of ductile fracture with dimples.
Processing Optimization and Microstructure of FeSiB Amorphous Coating by Laser Cladding

Abstract:Using the substrate of mild steel with thickness of 2 mm,Fe-Si-B amorphous ribbon with thickness of about 25 μm is cladded on substrate surface by pulse laser.The effects of pulse power P,pulse width W,pulse frequency F,beam diameter φ of the pulse laser on the formation,the dilution rate,microstructure and microhardness of the coatings are investigated.The results show that the coating with well formation,the lowest dilution rate,lower pore density,and chemical bonding with substrate is obtained,when P=18.4 W,T=3.2 ms,F=3.0 Hz,φ=0.3 mm.With the increase of laser power,the crystallization in coating happens easily,and the contents and categories of crystallization phase of α-Fe,Fe2B and Fe3Si are increased,moreover,the thickness of coating increases while the microhardness of coating decreases.The highest microhardness in central coating is about 1400 HV,exceeding extensively that of mild steel with 100 HV.

Abstract:In order to improve the wear resistance of 27SiMn steel substrate, Fe-based alloy coatings were prepared by laser cladding technology in the present study. In comparison to the conventional gravity powder feeding (GF) process, high-speed powder feeding (HF) process was used to prepare Fe-based alloy coating on 27SiMn steel substrate. The effect of diversified energy composition of powder materials on the microstructure and properties of coatings were systematically studied. X-ray diffractometer (XRD), optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to analyze the phase structure and microstructure of Fe-based alloy coatings, and the hardness and tribological properties were measured by the microhardness tester and ball on disc wear tester, respectively. The results show that the microstructure of conventional gravity feeding (GF) coatings was composed of coarse columnar crystals. In comparison, owing to the diversification of energy composition, the microstructure of the high-speed powder feeding (HF) coatings consists of uniform and small grains. The total energy of the HF process was 75.5% of that of the GF process, proving that high-efficiency cladding can be achieved at lower laser energy. The refinement of the microstructure is beneficial to improve the hardness and wear resistance of the coating, and the hardness of the HF coating increased by 9.4% and the wear loss decreased to 80.5%, compared with the GF coating. The wear surface of the HF coating suffered less damage, and the wear mechanism was slightly adhesive wear. In contrast, wear was more serious in the GF coating, and the wear mechanism was transformed into severe adhesive wear.

Abstract:Laser cladding of Fe34Co34B20Si5C3Nb4 on a low carbon steel substrate was conducted using coaxial powder feeding method. Microstructure, phase and microhardness were investigated by scanning electronic microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron probe micro-analysis and microhardness tester. Amorphous coating with NbC particles embedded in the matrix was formed. Differential scanning calorimetry curve showed that the glass transition temperature (T-g) and the onset crystallization temperature (T-x) were 799 K and 850 K, respectively. The supercooled liquid region (Delta T-x = T-x - T-g) was as large as 51 K, which implied the high thermal stability of the supercooled liquid against crystallization. Due to the NbC particles embedded in the amorphous matrix, the mean value of the microhardness of the coating prepared by laser cladding was higher than that of the bulk metallic glass formed by the copper mold casting method. The contribution of NbC particles to the total microhardness was theoretically estimated. The estimated hardness of the composite coating agreed well with the tested value. Abstract:<p>Co-based metallic glasses with ultrahigh strength and high microhardness are regarded as ideal surface-coating materials to significantly improve hardness and wear resistance of substrate materials. In this paper, a Co-based amorphous powder with high glass-forming ability was prepared by gas-atomization technique. Then a large-area Co-based amorphous coating was fabricated from the powder by laser cladding technology. The effects of different laser parameters (i.e., laser scanning speed and operating voltage) on glass formation of the amorphous coating were investigated. Furthermore, the thermal properties, microhardness and wear resistance of the amorphous coating produced with an optimal laser parameter were evaluated. The results indicate that the Co-based amorphous cladding layer exhibits extremely high microhardness of ~14.9 GPa, which can significantly improve the wear resistance of the substrate. A complex wear-failure mechanism of the Co-based coating is clarified as a mixture role of abrasive- & fatigue-wear, oxidation wear and adhesive wear proofed by microstructural and element-distribution analysis of various worn surface.</p>

Abstract:Fe based amorphous alloys have no defects such as grain boundaries and dislocations, with high hardness and high wear resistance. However, due to the limitation of amorphous brittleness and size effect, they have been unable to realize engineering application. Using ultra-high speed laser cladding technology to prepare Fe based amorphous powder into coating can not only give play to its excellent properties, but also avoid the limitations caused by size effect. Therefore, it has broad application prospects and is expected to become a breakthrough in the engineering application of Fe based amorphous alloy. In this paper, we make Fe 52.8 Cr 22.4 Mo 18.3 B 2 Si 1.2 C 2.1 on 27SiMn by laser cladding, in view of the phenomenon that cracks are easy to occur in the high hardness coating, the optimization scheme of prefabricated transition layer is designed, the Fe based amorphous coating is toughened, and its wear resistance is studied. The results show that the toughening effect of Ni as the transition layer is the best, and the occurrence rate of surface micro cracks of the coating can be reduced to 35%. The microhardness of the coating is about 1200HV 0.1 , which is 6 times that of the substrate.

Abstract:High-density coating with FeSiB amorphous ribbons as cladding materials on the surface of mild steel was fabricated by laser cladding. The effect of different pulse widths on formability, microstructure and microhardness of the coatings was analyzed by optical microscope(OM), X-ray diffrac-tometer (XRD) , scanning electron microscope (SEM) and microhardness tester. The results show that with the increase of the pulse width, the coating dilute rate rises; the tendency of crack increases and the crack originates from surface to the interface; the degree of crystallization increases and crystallization phases are alpha-Fe, Fe2B and Fe3Si, fusion zone width increases and the trend of columnar crystals along the epitaxial growth becomes bigger and bigger; the microhardness firstly increases and then decreases. When pulse width is 3. 2ms, the structure of the coating is compact, no hole defects, the interface exhibits a good metallurgical combination and the dilute rate is low about 23. 2%. Average microhardness of the coating reaches 1192HV, which is about 10 times as much as the substrate.
